Belfast Giants suffered a blow to their Elite League title hopes after this defeat by Coventry Blaze on Friday.
Daryl Lloyd gave the hosts an early lead before Derek Campbell equalised for the English team.
Brad Leeb (2) and Adam Henrich netted to make it 4-1 and Noah Clarke's goal gave the Giants hope before Mike Schutte sealed victory for the Blaze.
The sides meet again at the Odyssey on Saturday night with the Giants still two points behind leaders Nottingham.
