Belfast Giants on verge of Elite League title

Chris Higgins scored two goals for the Belfast Giants

The Belfast Giants are on the verge of securing the Elite League crown after Saturday's 3-1 victory over Nottingham.

Paul Adey's men could actually seal the title on Sunday - if they beat Nottingham again and both Sheffield and Dundee lose.

However, the more likely scenario is that the Giants will get the chance to win the title on their own ice when they face Coventry on Friday night.

Chris Higgins (2) and Evan Cheverie got Belfast's goals against Nottingham.

Cheverie opened the scoring inside two minutes with Higgins making it 2-0 on 8.49.

David Clarke pulled one back for the Panthers while Higgins netted the only goal of the third period.

The Braehead Clan, second in the table, lost 6-4 to Fife Flyers and now trail the Giants by 20 points.
