Champions Hockey League: Cardiff Devils drawn against Vaxjo Lakers once again

Cardiff Devils kept up the pressure on the Vaxjo Lakers goal
Cardiff Devils won two of their six group games, one in overtime, in last year's Champions Hockey League

Cardiff Devils have been drawn against Red Bull Salzburg, SC Bern and Vaxjo Lakers in the Champions Hockey League.

The draw, held at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, pits the Devils against last year's runners-up Vaxjo and quarter-finalists Bern.

Despite finishing bottom of their group last year, the Devils did record a memorable 5-1 victory over the Lakers.

Devils, who won three domestic titles this season, will compete in Group G with the top two teams progressing.

Cardiff Devils head coach Andrew Lord said he was expecting another tough group and the draw did not disappoint.

However, Lord said the Elite League champions - who also won the Play-Off and Erhardt Conference titles - are eager to test themselves against Europe's best teams.

The Welsh side impressed on their maiden campaign last year, picking up two wins from their six games but missing out on the knock-out stage.

"We feel very fortunate to be representing the Elite League in this competition and we're looking forward to it again," said Lord.

In preparation for their Champions Hockey League campaign, the Devils will play pre-season games against Nottingham Panthers on 11 and 12 August home and away, then face Slovakian top tier side HK Poprad on 18 and August, with both of those games in Cardiff.

The opening fixtures will take place on the weekend of 30-31 August, with further rounds on 1-2, 6-7 and 8-9 September, then 9-10 and 16-17 October.

Which of their Group G opponents the Devils will face and where will be decided in due course.

Champions Hockey League Group G: Vaxjo Lakers (SWE), SC Bern (SUI), Red Bull Salzburg (AUT), Cardiff Devils (GBR).
