    Celtic v Inter Milan (20:05)

    Nick Owen

    Presenter, BBC Midlands Today

European nights at Celtic Park this season have lacked the sparkling intensity of recent seasons - the Europa League will do that. But this evening feels different. The prospect of facing a genuine European giant - albeit a slightly diminished one - has increased the sense of anticipation about the stadium and it could be reminiscent of a big Champions League night.

Everton come forward through Steven Naismith in pursuit of a fifth. He passes to Luke Garbutt, who then loses possession. That's probably the last attack of the game.

Worth remembering that Young Boys were ridiculously strong at home. They had scored 13 goals and conceded just one in their five previous Europa League matches in Bern this season and have been well beaten tonight.

It promises to be some atmosphere at Celtic Park.

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

That's Romelu Lukaku's last action of the game and he gets a deserved round of applause as he heads off the pitch with three goals to his name.

Christian Atsu, who was player of the tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations, is on in his place. He scored an absolute belter at the Afcon, worth a look if you have not seen it!

  13. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

Steven Naismith is down clutching his leg after overstretching to challenge for possession. The result may be good, but some of these injuries may be a concern for Roberto Martinez.

But Steven Naismith is nails. He runs off his injury and moments later Everton are so close to a fifth. Romelu Lukaku powers away from the home defence and tries to lift the ball over Yvon Mvogo, who makes a great save.

  14. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

Looks like Christian Atsu, fresh from returning from the Africa Cup of Nations where he helped Ghana to the final, is about to come on.

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

Yellow card for Romelu Lukaku. Not sure what for, even he doesn't seem to know what for as he shrugs his shoulders at the referee in disbelief.

Kazim Kazim-Richards (formerly Colin in his days in English football) has bagged an equaliser for Feyenoord in Roma , cancelling out Gervinho's first-half strike to leave the scores locked at 1-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, while Hulk has given Zenit St Petersburg a 1-0 lead at PSV Eindhoven .

A brace from Bas Dost has put Wolfsburg 2-0 up against Sporting Lisbon and a Kenneth Petersen own goal has increased Club Brugge 's lead to 3-0 at Aalborg while Jaba Kankava and Ruslan Rotan have put Dnipro 2-0 up at home to Olympiakos .

Torino still have a 2-1 advantage over Athletic Bilbao while Napoli have not yet extended their 3-0 lead at Trabzonspor in the second half.

  21. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

A fine introduction to the game by Alexander Gerndt as the former Swedish player of the year meets a cross to volley a shot straight at Tim Howard. A little more to the left or right and that would have been 4-2.

  22. CLOSE!

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

Romelu Lukaku should have his fourth! Substitute Luke Garbutt crosses low from the right and the bounce on the artificial pitch catches out the Young Boys defender but also surprises Lukaku, with the ball bouncing off his foot and wide from barely four yards out.

    BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton

Antolin Alcaraz is on for James McCarthy as Robert Martinez makes his second change. Young Boys also make a change as Milan Gajic is replaced by striker Alexander Gerndt.

  25. LINE-UPS

    Celtic v Inter Milan (20:05)

Celtic start with the same XI as the one that began the match against St Johnstone on Saturday. That means European debuts in a Celtic jersey for Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong and Leigh Griffiths keeps his place up front.

From my discussions with an Italian colleague earlier, it would appear the only slight surprise in the Inter Milan line-up is the inclusion of Rodrigo Palacio ahead of Mateo Kovacic.

Celtic XI : Gordon; Matthews, Denayer, van Dijk, Izaguirre; Brown, Bitton; Mackay-Steven, Johansen, Armstrong; Griffiths.

Inter Milan XI : Carrizo; Campagnaro, Ranocchia, Juan Jesus, Santon; Medel, Guarin, Kuzmanovic; Shaqiri; Palacio, Icardi.

  29. LINE-UPS

    Tottenham v Fiorentina (20:05 GMT)

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has left in-form striker Harry Kane on the bench as he hands Roberto Soldado a chance to impress in attack as part of six changes from the side which lost 3-2 at Liverpool last time out.

Ben Davies and Federico Fazio come in for Eric Dier and Danny Rose in defence while Andros Townsend, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho come in for Ryan Mason, Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela in midfield.

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella gives a Europa League debut to Egypt winger Mohamed Salah, who has joined on loan until the end of the season from Chelsea as part of the deal which took Juan Cuadrado to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who is on a season-long loan with the Florence club, is named among the substitutes for the visitors at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham XI : Lloris, Walker, Fazio, Vertonghen, Davies, Bentaleb, Paulinho, Chadli, Eriksen, Townsend, Soldado.

Fiorentina XI : Tatarusanu, Rodriguez, Basanta, Savic, Pizarro, Joaquin, Fernandez, Valero Iglesias, Pasqual, Salah, Gomez

Freddy Howard: Important Everton leave Switzerland so they have an easy second leg - gives them the opportunity to concentrate on vital Premier League matches.

Matt Austin: I think the reason Everton look better tonight is because in the league teams have learned that sitting deep nullifies us. Not so in Europe.

  31. GOAL

BSC Young Boys 1-4 Everton - Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku completes a great night as he scores his third of the game and it is a typical Lukaku strike. He charges away on the attack, gets beyond a defender to leave him one-on-one and he sidefoots home.

A few Young Boys players seem unhappy, though, as it appeared some had stopped as James McCarthy was down injured and needed treatment.

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

Bryan Oviedo limps off and, as expected, on comes Luke Garbutt.

  33. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

It looks like Bryan Oviedo's game is over. He has injured his hamstring having bumped Renato Steffen off the ball to prevent him crossing. Luke Garbutt is instructed to warm up quickly.

  34. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

A chance for Everton as Bryan Oviedo sends a cross into the area, Steve von Bergen tries to head the ball away but only as far as Kevin Mirallas, unmarked on the right side of the area, but he lashes his shot wide.

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

    Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley is booked but it could have been much worse. The Everton midfielder was down on the ground after a challenge and got knocked in the head by the trailing foot of Sekou Sanogo. Barkley gets up and pushes Sanogo and out comes the yellow card and the referee screams a warning at Barkley.

  36. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

Tim Howard's first action of the second half is to help a speculative cross-shot over the bar. It looked like it was going over, but he couldn't be too sure. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.

  37. Team News

    Liverpool v Besiktas (20:05 GMT)

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge makes his European debut for the Reds having missed the whole of their Champions League campaign through injury.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers makes one change from the side which beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup with Jordon Ibe in for the suspended Lazar Markovic. Raheem Sterling is back on the bench following a recent foot injury.

Besiktas coach Slaven Bilic includes Demba Ba in his starting line-up after the striker shook off a slight knock. It will be the first time Ba has faced Liverpool since scoring for Chelsea last year in a win which damaged the Reds' title hopes.

Liverpool XI : Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Allen, Henderson, Moreno, Ibe, Coutinho, Lallana, Sturridge.

Besiktas XI : Gonen, Kurtulus, Franco, Gulum, Motta, Hutchinson, Kavlak, Tore, Sosa, Sahan, Ba.

Just caught a replay of Sekou Sanogo's effort that hit the post. It was far too fast to spot in real time but it was actually great defending on the line by James McCarthy. BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

Everton are playing some great football going forward but their defence is a little suspect. They fail to defend a free-kick properly and Sekou Sanogo picks up a loose ball, no-one closes him down, and he drives an effort through a crowd of players and onto the post. A let-off for the Toffees.

  51. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton

The hosts have a pop from distance, Milan Gajic fizzing in a low effort from well over 30 yards and it needs Tim Howard to get down and push the ball behind for a corner.

  52. GOAL

BSC Young Boys 1-3 Everton - Romelu Lukaku

    Lukako celebrates

Everton are rampant and add a third with another lovely move. This time Bryan Oviedo backheels the ball into the path of Gareth Barry, whose cross deflects to Romelu Lukaku and he taps in. Three away goals for the Toffees.

  53. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-2 Everton

'Oooooohs' from the home crowd as Guillaume Hoarau glances a header wide of the post. That was not far off at all.

    BSC Young Boys 1-2 Everton

The Europa League is pointless? This game is putting forward a solid counter argument with play quickly swinging from one end to the other. Both sets of players are getting stuck in too, as Steven Naismith highlights when he goes in heavy on Florent Hadergionaj. Yellow card.

David Spencer: Fantastic game of football this. If the pitch is having anything to do with it, then we need more artificial pitches in England.

    BSC Young Boys 1-2 Everton

Double blow for the hosts as Everton grab a swift second! It is a lovely move too as Steven Naismith crosses across the face of goal and Seamus Coleman pokes in at the far post. Replays show Naismith had come in from an offside position in the build-up to that goal, though.

  60. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-1 Everton

Jan Lecjaks floats a ball into the area as the hosts push forward, it is aimed at Guillaume Hoarau but the ball is too close to Tim Howard who claims comfortably.

  61. GOAL

BSC Young Boys 1-1 Everton - Romelu Lukaku

Great response by Everton! They've been trying to find the head of Romelu Lukaku with a few crosses and it eventually pays off as Gareth Barry swings the ball in, Lukaku rises and nods beyond Yvon Mvogo.

  62. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-0 Everton

Everton have a free-kick, some 30 yards from goal. It looks too far to trouble Yvon Mvogo but Ross Barkley has a go, hiting the wall and the ball deflects behind.

Andy McNamara:This is the best we have played for a while and we are one down. We will score.

  64. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-0 Everton

There are definitely more goals in this game as Everton again come forward, this time Romelu Lukaku pokes the ball through the defence for Ross Barkley, who tries to cut it back to James McCarthy but Yvon Mvogo is off his line to grab the ball.

    BSC Young Boys 1-0 Everton

Much better! Two chances in quick succession for Everton as Romelu Lukaku uses his strength to evade a couple of challenges on the edge of the area, he then hits a shot low and hard towards the corner but Yvon Mvogo palms it away before then holding Ross Barkley's fierce drive seconds later.

  66. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 1-0 Everton

The home fans have found their voice after that goal. Everton try to respond as a ball from defence is pumped forward, but Kevin Mirallas is offside.

  67. GOAL

BSC Young Boys 1-0 Everton - Guillaume Hoarau

That's why their home record is so impressive - first chance, first goal for the hosts. Raphael Nuzzolo tees up Guillaume Hoarau on the edge of the area and, with no defenders closing him down, he curls a shot into the far corner.

  68. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 0-0 Everton

Bryan Oviedo is being given lots of space on that left side, and seems keen to cross early. He sends the ball in again from out wide, picking out Romelu Lukaku, but the striker had just strayed offside.

    BSC Young Boys 0-0 Everton

The corner comes to nothing but Everton are quickly back on the attack as Bryan Oviedo attempts a cross, but it almost ends up being a freak goal as the ball smashes the outside of the post.

  70. Post update

    BSC Young Boys 0-0 Everton

Under the lights, and on the artificial pitch, this looks like a massive game of five-a-side.

The ball definitely bounces a little differently on this surface than it does on grass but Everton have adapted well to it and have the first chance as Romelu Lukaku shoulders a cross towards goal, but Yvon Mvogo pushes it behind for a corner.

  71. KICK-OFF

    Demba Ba
Image caption: Demba Ba in action for Chelsea against Liverpool

The visit of Besiktas tonight also means the first return of striker Demba Ba to Anfield since scoring for Chelsea last year in a win which damaged the Reds' title hopes.

Ba's goal at Anfield in April arrived when he pounced on a Steven Gerrard mistake to score the first in Chelsea's 2-0 win in the Reds' penultimate home game of the season. He has 13 league goals and is joint-top scorer in Turkish football this season.

"It won't stimulate any bad memories for me," said Rodgers, when asked what facing Ba would mean. "We just see him as a threat that we will pay respect to but nothing more than that."

    Brendan Rodgers
    Image caption: Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool, of course, have been parachuted into the Europa League after exiting at the group stage of the Champions League.

The Reds picked up just five points but have improved a lot since then, heading into tonight's game against Beskitas on the back of six wins from their last 10 Premier League games, and boss Brendan Rodgers reckons Liverpool could have won the Champions League had they reached the last-16.

"You just never know with the Champions League because sometimes it's not the best teams that win it," he said. "I felt if we were maybe the team we had (last year) or were further down the road with this team then we'd have had a chance with the Champions League, that's the reality."

    Stade de Suisse's artificial pitch

Will playing on an artificial pitch affect Everton?

Roberto Martinez has been preparing for the Stade de Suisse surface by training for a week on Rugby League side Widnes Vikings' AstroTurf surface, and has also given Harry Redknapp a buzz for some advice. Redknapp was in charge of Tottenham when they played on the pitch five years ago.

"We have done our preparation right" says Martinez. "We have been working on that sort of surface and I feel we are ready. It is not an excuse or a reason for us not to be able to compete in the game."

And there's already talk on Merseyside of another derby, if both Everton and Liverpool and Everton can get through. We'll all be writing more Steven Gerrard pieces. They have won their last seven European home games since losing to Liverpool in September 2012, while they have scored 13 goals and conceded just one in their five Europa League matches in Bern this season.

Young Boys's Switzerland international right-back Scott Sutter was born and raised in England, moving to Switzerland in 2002. He apparently supports Tottenham too.

  92. Team news

BSC Young Boys v Everton (18:00 GMT)

Everton midfielder James McCarthy makes only his second start of 2015 as manager Roberto Martinez looks to nurse him back to full fitness after long-term hamstring trouble. He replaces Mo Besic, while Kevin Mirallas comes in for the cup-tied Aaron Lennon.

BSC Young Boys , second in the Swiss Super League and on a run of eight wins in nine matches, are unchanged from the side who beat Grasshoppers 4-2 last Friday. France international striker Guillaume Hoarau, who spent four years with Paris St-Germain, scored twice in that win to take his goal total for the season to 11. Centre-back Steve von Bergen played for Switzerland at last summer's World Cup.

BSC Young Boys XI : Mvogo; Hadergjonaj, Vilotic, Von Bergen, Lecjaks; Steffen, Sanogo; Steffen, Kubo, Nuzzolo; Hoarau.

Everton XI: Howard; Coleman, Jagielka, Stones, Oviedo; McCarthy, Barry; Mirallas, Barkley, Naismith; Lukaku.

Speaking of Everton's poor league form, that brings me nicely on to a feature you may have seen on our website today.

BBC Sport has studied 10 seasons since the Europa League introduced group stages to find exactly what impact a campaign has on league performance. We crunched every season-on-season position change and analysed each league result which followed a Europa League fixture and the stats make for interesting reading.

There are plenty more stats and information in the feature, definitely worth a read.

Lovely weather in Bern, Switzerland ahead of Young Boys versus Everton.

Is the Europa League a good thing for the Toffees? Roberto Martinez has talked about taking the competition seriously since their very first game and they qualified with ease for the knock-out stage, finishing top of their group.

Has it come at a cost, though? They have won just one of their last 11 games and are just five points above the relegation zone in the Premier League. Imagine, they could feasibly win the tournament and secure Champions League football for next season, but also get relegated to the Championship.

Real Madrid one week, Rotherham the next. Amazing scenes.

    What to watch out for

    Europa League draw

So here are the fixtures in full tonight.

Our main interest is in Young Boys v Everton (18:00 GMT); Liverpool v Beskitas (20:05), Tottenham v Fiorentina (20:05) and Celtic v Inter Milan (20:05), and we'll be providing a dedicated live on Celtic's game from 19:30.

I think we can all agree that Guingamp v Dynamo Kiev is the pick of the bunch up there though...

  97. Post update

    Europa League trophy

Yep, the Europa League is back!

OK, it may not have the grandeur of its bigger brother the Champions League, but this is the knockout stages of the competition and that alone brings with it its own element of excitement.

Gone are the seemingly endless amounts of group-stage games against the likes of Apollon Limassol and Astra Giurgiu and now it is a two-legged shootout as we whittle down the 32 remaining teams.

Add to that the fact that Champions League football is the prize for winning the whole thing this year and I reckon we could be in for some pretty good Europa League action over the next few months. Honestly.

  98. It's back

February. The days are getting warmer, the nights are getting lighter and football fixtures seems to be coming thick and fast. It is also the return of the Europa League.

Three Premier League teams are in the knockout stages - Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton - but with domestic matters heading into the business end of the season, tonight could be the night we discover where each club's priorities lie.

Will it be more European glory?

    Liverpool win the UEFA Cup

A first top four finish since 2012?

    Or simply Premier League survival?

Over to south Wales, where our colleagues at BBC Wales Sport are keeping us abreast of what Garry Monk is telling the media.

"We probably haven't been as consistent with our standards as we'd like," says the Swans boss, whose team have won only one of their last six mathes (though it was a pretty impressive win - 1-0 at Southampton).

Monk welcomes Gylfi Sigurdsson back from suspension to face Man United: "He's been an important player for us this season," adds the boss.
