Ibrahimovic to join Manchester United

The imminent arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks to be perfect for Manchester United.

Their history is littered with temperamental big-name players; George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo to name but three.

The big question is whether Zlatan, at 34, can adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League.

Delve into the past of this contradictory forward and it seems he is at his best when questions are at their fiercest.

But, as every stockbroker will tell you, past performance is no guarantee of what will happen in the future.

Murray on court

Wimbledon

Amid all the Zlatan excitement I forgot to say that British number one Andy Murray is in action in his second round match.

The 2013 winner has just gone 4-3 up in the first set against Yen-Hsun Lu.

Portugal will assess midfielders Raphael Guerreiro and Andre Gomes, who are nursing minor muscle problems.

I think most people will be thinking "if Cristiano Ronaldo is on form, Portugal will win".

But I have been to two Poland games and have been very impressed. Their star striker and captain Robert Lewandowski is yet to score but he runs the channels, drops deep, is a target man and a link man - he does absolutely everything.

They do not just rely on him, though, unlike Portugal who need one player - Ronaldo - to be at the top of his game to have a chance.

Lawro's prediction: 2-0 to Poland

'Past results count for nothing'

Wales v Belgium (Fri, 20:00 BST)

Wales

Wales were in the same qualifying group as Belgium, earning a goalless draw in Brussels and winning 1-0 in Cardiff. That, Chris Coleman insists, will have no bearing.

"Whatever we know about Belgium, the games we've had in the past, they count for nothing," he said. "There are no second chances, it won't matter if we won last time or drew, it's all on the night and that's exciting."

While these are glorious, heady days for Welsh football, Chris Coleman appreciates that there were bleaker moments in the not too distant past.

The reasons for that change in fortune are varied, but one is the composition of the squad. "You need leaders, more than one," Coleman said. "We've got a great dressing room, a good blend.

"We had some tough times, some dark days and some huge disappointments and that's how I judge people. Not on a sun, shiny day but in the dark days."

Wales news conference

Wales v Belgium (Fri, 20:00 BST)

Friday's encounter is one of the biggest in the history of Welsh football, but will the burden of that prevent the players and manager Chris Coleman from savouring the occasion?

"We'll enjoy it when we perform and that is what the team has done this tournament," the manager said. "This is a huge test and a big challenge. It's a great position for us to be in but we have to go and do all the things that have got us there in the first place."

The headline news from the Welsh camp is that captain Ashley Williams is fit to play despite suffering a nasty shoulder injury in the last-16 win over Northern Ireland.

Williams said: "It was hurting a lot at the end of the game but credit to medical staff because it's in good shape and I'm sure it'll be fine."

Coach Chris Coleman is confident his captain will be 100% for the team's quarter-final. "There's always worry about shoulder injuries but he's done all the sessions this week so that's positive," he added.

Claude Puel
Southampton

Erik Bielderman, the chief football writer for French newspaper L'Equipe, has followed Claude Puel's career. He says Puel is a "quiet guy" with the media and will "not give great headlines", but "speaks his mind" in the dressing room.

Bielderman said: "He loves entertaining football but he is also realistic. His team will never be unbalanced but they will play to win games.

"This guy is suitable. Southampton is the perfect connection with Claude because he is an academy coach. He loves the academy player."

Anyone think there's more than a hint of Alan Pardew about Puel?
