Which players proved you wrong and how did they do it?

Saviour Essien: I have watched Victor Valdes many times at Barcelona and everyone, including me, always said Barcelona could always win without Valdez. But what he is doing at Middlesbrough makes me think he was joking at Barcelona and that he's 24 now.

Jimmy Bradburn: Charlie Austin, he's been fantastic for Southampton.

    Horse Racing

    Cornelius Lysaght

    BBC horse racing correspondent

Top novice hurdler Altior, trained by Nicky Henderson and the mount of jockey Noel Fehily, made his hotly-anticipated steeplechasing debut at Kempton (1-25) a successful one with a near foot-perfect round to beat his sole rival by 63 lengths no less.

Henderson nominated the Henry VIII Novices Chase at Sandown on December 3 as the likely next target for the six-year-old who's already favourite for the Arkle Trophy at jump racing's Cheltenham Festival in March.

  5. Southgate completes England job interview

    Football

    Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate's three-hour interview for the England manager's job on a permanent basis is understood to have gone smoothly.

The 46-year-old, who has just concluded a four-game stint as interim manager following Sam Allardyce's departure, is the only candidate.

The England Under-21 coach was interviewed by a five-person panel but no announcement is expected until any appointment is ratified at a full FA board meeting at the end of the month.

The panel comprised FA chairman Greg Clarke, chief executive Martin Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth, League Managers' Association chairman Howard Wilkinson and former England defender Graeme Le Saux.

"The FA has to be seen to be going through the process," ex-FA chief executive Mark Palios told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme. "Maybe it is a process to iron out some things they expect of an England manager, so it is more of a briefing for Southgate than an interview.

  9. Berahino still unavailable for West Brom

Premier League team news: West Brom v Burnley (20:00 GMT)

West Brom will continue to be without striker Saido Berahino, who has not played since September and will return to a conditioning camp in France as he continues to regain full fitness. Salomon Rondon has recovered from a hamstring injury, but Nacer Chadli may miss out after minor knee surgery.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has no fresh injury concerns. Defender Stephen Ward remains doubtful with the hamstring problem which kept him out of the win over Crystal Palace.

There will be live commentary of the match on BBC Radio 5 live.

  10. Batshuayi scores twice for Chelsea 'development' side

    Football

We mentioned earlier that a number of Chelsea first-team players were featuring in their club's development game at home against Southampton today.

Well, the experience has counted as the Chelsea side, which included John Terry, Cesc Fabregas, Michy Batshuayi, Kurt Zouma and Marco van Ginkel, came from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

Batshuayi scored twice with Van Ginkel grabbing a late winner. The Chelsea first-team have named the same starting line-up for five successive Premier League games, hence the reason why the big names were given some game time.

  11. Bieber visits Barcelona players, as Messi returns

    Football

    Lionel Messi and Justin Bieber

Lionel Messi should be available for Barcelona's Champions League meeting with Celtic on Wednesday, having returned to training after sickness.

Messi trained today after illness and was joined by pop star Justin Bieber as Barcelona prepare for the game where a victory would take them into the last 16.

Striker Luis Suarez, who was suspended for the 0-0 draw against Malaga on Saturday, is available for a return to the visitors' starting line-up.

Messi, 29, had been forced to pull out of Barca's matchday squad just hours before kick-off. The Spanish champions' stalemate means that Luis Enrique's side fell four points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

Which players proved you wrong and how did they do it?

Dave Ridge: Steve McMahon. Liverpool to Manchester City for £900,000. I thought "here we go, another crock offloaded from our dear scouse chums!" Absolute class.

Nick Ives: Olivier Giroud, still comes on and bangs a goal in 😉

Jon Hancock: Harry Arter. Five years ago, a red card waiting to happen, with an unnerving ability to choose the wrong option. Now a hugely impressive and influential player - the heartbeat of the Bournemouth side.
