  2. Post update

As we mentioned at 14:57, the EFL will trial the new "ABBA penalty shoot-out" format, which has prompted these texts from our readers...

SMS Message: They are called ABBA penalties because the Winner Takes it all from Adam Coventry

  3. 'I feel I have missed out!'

Phillips is talking about the extortionate transfer fees with Mark Clement...

"I never thought I would see these ridiculous transfer fees like Neymar potentially going to £200m to PSG? Derby County bid £15m for me when I was at Sunderland so I never thought we would be talking about a £200m transfer fee.

"I wish I was still playing because I feel I have missed out!"

  4. Post update

There is beard chat going on with Derby County's assistant coach Kevin Phillips on the Match of the Day Facebook page at the moment....

  5. Grealish update

    Jack Grealish

Steve Bruce on Jack Grealish: "Now Jack's got an awful injury. We wish him a speedy recovery. He's still in hospital as we speak. The well-being of Jack is the most important thing at the moment. He is in a stable condition."

The Villa midfielder was taken to hospital after injuring his hip and ribs in a pre-season friendly against Watford.

The England Under-21 international fell awkwardly during the first half of Saturday's goalless draw against the Hornets at Villa Park.

Villa are expected to be without Grealish for up to three months following the injury.

  6. 'I hate pre-season!'

More from Steve Bruce: "You know the individuals; I know the individuals. I hated pre-season as a player. I hate it even worse as a manager. You can win all your games, first game of the season, you get thumped, and all that optimism goes down the tube. It'll be a difficult game."

    Steve Bruce:
  7. 'I would give my past four promotions to take this one'

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has been speaking to Sky Sports...

"As long as you have a squad capable, then you have a fair crack at winning the title. But we need a bit of luck and already have a fair few serious injuries.

"This club Aston Villa demands promotion. You can try to dampen the expectations from the fans but it is there and you can't deny it.

"I would give my past four promotions to take this one because of the huge expectations. last year we didn't match the expectations.

  8. EFL to trial 'ABBA' penalty shootout format

The "ABBA" format for penalty shootouts will be used in all English Football League competitions in 2017-18.

After an initial spot-kick, teams each take pairs of kicks in an attempt to reduce the pressure on the side taking the second kick in a shootout.

The system has already been used on a trial basis in some international tournaments by Uefa during the summer.

It will be implemented in all ties in the Carabao Cup, Checkatrade Trophy and EFL play-offs.

You can read the full story here.

Bill Ash: Can someone tell John Terry that we haven't had 45,000 fans inside Villa Park in a long time..?

But will the signing of Terry help put bums on seats?

  11. 'The village team that reached the English Football League'

Forest Green Rovers are the new kids on the Football League block - and it's been a long road to promotion.

After 19 consecutive seasons in the National League, they beat Tranmere 3-1 at Wembley to win promotion to the EFL.

They had support from Vivienne Westwood, every player follows a vegan diet and they're planning a new 5,000 wooden eco-stadium.

Here's the story behind Forest Green Rovers' extraordinary rise.

  13. Post update

And on the subject of John Terry, The Sun are reporting that Villa have had to put the sale of replica shirts on hold - because they're too popular!

The club shop has reportedly run out of the letter 'R' as they struggle to keep up with the demand for Terry shirts.

The full story is over here.

    .
  14. 'The club sells itself'

More from John Terry on why he joined Aston Villa: "The manager, with his experience he can bring and offer to the group, it's impeccable, really. The club sells itself. I've been on the receiving end of the supporters a few time. They're a passionate bunch.

"When you walk trough the door in the dressing room, the pre-season camp - the players have the same ambitions. It'll be tough but everyone in our group is up for it and committed to this season. "

  15. Fixture list ahoy

It might feel like the season has just ended but no. It's been two-and-a-bit months since the last league game, and that, frankly, is far too long.

So things begin again on Friday, when Nottingham Forest play Championship new boys Millwall, and relegated Sunderland host Derby County.

Everyone else, from the Championship to League Two, get going on the Saturday. We've got the full fixture list over here.
