  2. Strictly star Peacock looks forward to 'excellent occasion'

    Two-time Paralympic champion and Strictly Come Dancing star Jonnie Peacock is another big-name athlete using the Great North City Games as a warm-up for Doha – where he’ll be defending his 100m IPC T44 title.

    He’ll take to Stockton’s streets at 13:20 and told the games’ official website that he’s looking forward to the event.

    “They’re always brilliant events and as athletes we all love that the spectators can get so close to the action. It adds a different dimension to track and field sports.

    “I’m really excited to be competing… it’s sure to be an excellent occasion.”

  3. KJT getting geared up for Qatar

    Katarina Johnson-Thompson

    Commonwealth heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson is one of the biggest names to feature at the Great North City Games – she’ll be taking part in the long jump and a 150m sprint event on a specially-constructed street course in the heart of Stockton-on-Tees.

    It’s all part of her preparations for the World Championships which begin in Doha on 27 September.

    Johnson-Thompson recently spoke to the BBC about the sacrifices she’s making to get herself ready for the biggest athletics event of the year – and her lifelong friendship with Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer.
