Hosted annually, the European Cross Country Championships bring the best runners from across the continent together to race in six categories – men’s and women’s seniors, under-23 and junior.

This is the 26th edition of the competition since it was first held in Alnwick in 1994 – this year, the races will take place in Lisbon, and the event will be heading to Dublin for 2020.

This year’s course, in the Bela Vista Park, will run to 8225m for the senior women and 10225m for the senior men, with shorter courses being contested in the junior categories.

In recent years, the Turkish competitors have dominated, taking home the last four men’s and last two women’s senior golds - Kaan Kigen Ozbilen and Yasemin Can are the reigning champions. The last British winner was Gemma Steel, who took gold in Samokov, Bulgaria in 2014.

  4. How to get into cross country

    BBC Sport

    Dewi Griffiths

Cross-country running is a discipline that sees athletes race outdoors on grass or woodland courses. It usually takes place in the winter, outside of the track-and-field season.

There is no set distance but races would usually fall into the long-distance category of running. Stamina and endurance are very important, but you also need to be ready to get muddy! While predominantly an individual sport, there is often a team element to races.

You can find local opportunities in cross country and other forms of athletics in England,Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
