Desperate times, desperate measures.

With time ticking down and in dire need of a goal, England sub off goalkeeper Geogre Pinner and bring on outfield player Brendan Creed as a rush keeper.

He wears a light blue shirt and has 'goalkeeper privileges'. Not quite sure what they are, but they don't include the privilege of padding when some Aussie wallops it at his groin.

Australia may be winning but they only have eight field players out there against 11 from England.

'Devastated' Haslam brothers

Men's 3m synchro springboard

Nick Hope

BBC Sport on the Gold Coast

They did their duty and smiled for the camera but the Haslam brothers Ross and Jack admit they’re “devastated” to have missed out on a Commonwealth medal.

The pair were in contention for much of the synchronised 3m springboard final but a few slight slips saw them finish fifth.

It’s still a highly impressive result for the pair who are making their major event debut together.

“Right now it’s hard to take,” Ross - who was fourth in the individual 3m event tells me.

Jack adds; “we’ve learnt so much from this experience and although it really hurts right now I know we can do better and come back stronger in the future.”

You can see why the Kookaburras captain Mark Knowles got the flagbearer gig at the opening ceremony for the host nation.

The 34-year-old has basically given a monologue through the match, constantly instructing his team and pulling people into position.

The end of the third quarter doesn't stop him with the umpires both coming in for a spray about something or other.

Australia have eight shots at goal to England's two by the way. It's been a rearguard action from the visitors.

England to play Australia in final

Australia will be in confident mood for tomorrow's final after thrashing their rivals New Zealand 109-50.

'Horrendous results' - McIntosh

Scotland's five-time Commonwealth Games medallist Jennifer McIntosh has described her results on the Gold Coast as 'horrendous' after she finished without a medal.

Jennifer's younger sister, Seonaid, has taken two bronze medals at the Games - the third member of her family to win a Commonwealth Games medal. Their mother, Shirley, has four including gold in Victoria in 1994.

On Instagram Jennifer posted:

"Well. That's my last Commonwealth Games over, and as far as results go it was pretty horrendous (can't fault the consistency though... 9th, 8th and 8th). Yesterday was possibly the most emotionally draining day of my life and to have to come back this morning and compete was probably the toughest thing I'll ever do. But you know what. I loved every minute of it. It's been a privilege to compete for Team Scotland and I am so grateful to all my support team for everything. Just sorry I could reward your hard work with a medal."

Normally when you see someone here decked head to toe in colours it’s because they are supporting a relative or friend. Alyssa though keeps it simple when asked who she is here to support: “Just Australia.”

She’s been drawn into the Games and has tickets to boxing, squash, hockey and the marathon. From what I’ve seen in this region, it’s fair to say this event has been embraced.

Frazer Clarke has made it into the super-heavyweight showpiece final on Saturday to guarantee at least silver for England.

Daley and Goodfellow win 10m diving synchro gold

'Dive of the competition' - Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow produce spectacular dive

Tom Daley, who won his fourth Commonwealth gold in 10m synchro earlier on, says a hip injury has kept him out of the individual competition but he is happy to hand an opportunity to a young team mate.

He told BBC Sport: "There's a lot of amazing talent coming through British Diving at the moment. I'm not going to be competing in the individual because of my hip but Noah Williams will take my place and it will be an amazing experience for him because it's an event where we get to send so many more divers and these young kids coming through are doing so well.

"I am the granddad of the team now. It's my third Commonwealths, I've been to three Olympics. Knowing what you've achieved and you've done in the past really does help when you're struggling with injury. I'm just about holding up with my hip but I'll be able to manage it. I have to be smart with my training to carry on between now and Tokyo."

Can England boomerang back into this one

Remember, Great Britain came back from three down at half-time to draw against Australia in the London 2012 pool stage.

Jack Laugher’s injury problems are well documented but Chris Mears has endured his own personal issues since the pair won gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Mears told me ahead of the Games that he has struggled with mental health problems.

“It’s been really difficult because for months I was thinking - what if that’s it, what if I’ve had the best moment of my life (Olympic gold) and I’m never going to experience that kind of enjoyment again,” he told me.

“It’s taken a lot of time and a lot of work with the psychologists to realise that it’s OK, there’s still more out there to do and achieve.”
