When it swings and seams we know this England team are as good as any but when it's flat and there is not a huge amount of movement I thought that afternoon session sent the message back - let's not get too excited about this Test team because they have won a couple of games in conditions we know they play well on - they still have areas they can do things a little bit better.

I looked at England in that middle session when there wasn't a great deal of action on the ball, there wasn't much swing or seam and we know that's their problem. When there is no swing and seam the England team don't look like they are going to get a huge amount of wickets because they don't have extreme pace or a huge amount of mystery.

So this match is intriguingly poised.
India are 307-6 after being asked to bat first which they'd probably take but it could have been better for the tourists.
Kohli and Rahane will be annoyed they didn't go on to make a match-defining score.

England tomorrow could go bang, bang, bang and get them out for 340 and you think that's about par. I'm looking forward to Pant, I've seen him in the IPL and he'll just come out and play. Ashwin is a good batsman, he has been possibly the second best batsman for them so it is not going to be easy to get them out. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the England batsmen play when the opposition has a good score on the board.

India will be vibrant, they know they are just ahead. When you bowl first you have to bowl the opposition out on day one to justify the decision.

Adil Rashid on TMS: "It was nice to get a few overs under my belt. I thought the bowlers toiled well, it wasn't easy on that pitch so we'll be OK with the position we're in."
On his wicket of Virat Kohli:"It was one of those balls in that driving area and he nicked it. I wouldn't say it was part of the plan, I was just trying to mix it up and fortunately he nicked it."
On Ben Stokes' return:"He is the same as normal, massive, massive player for us."

I saw an India team enjoying the battle. It did seam, I thought England bowled a bit too short, they got cut and pulled. I thought Broad was the pick of the bowlers, he could easily have got four of five. If England are honest they will think they haven't quite pitched it up enough.

It has been really good Test cricket. When you see a team dominate like England did at Lord's you get a bit bored but today has been a proper contest. I think Joe Root is in the dressing room thinking he should have batted.

You've got to give India huge credit. Dhawan came out and played with positivity. Rahane played with the positivity without being reckless. It was the mindset change. They were thinking 'can I score? no, OK I'll leave it'.

India batsman Ajinkya Rahane who scored 81, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it is a good score on this wicket. When me and Virat (Kohli) were batting we were looking to put pressure on the opponent. In the end it is a good score.
"320-4 would have been really good. Intent was important. Our openers played really well. We were thinking get a good start then middle order can capitalise.
"Tomorrow we have to bat well and then bowl in the right areas."
