  2. Post update

Jos Buttler, speaking to Sky Sports after his maiden Test century: "Yeah amazing feeling to finally get there, a hundred in any game is incredible. Fantastic feeling.

"A few months ago I was thinking that Test match cricket would never happen and never scoring a hundred would have been something that would have eaten away at me."

In the end last pair Adil Rashid and Jimmy Anderson had to bat out the final five overs to take the match into a final day.

India pushed for the final wicket. Anderson in particular stood firm against some hostility.

But in the end Anderson and Rashid managed it. The crowd appreciated the efforts at the end. India will have to come back tomorrow to seal their victory...

I hope England move Pope down one or two places and allow him to play the way he does. Even at six going out dashing you are not going to survive for long and the way Buttler and Stokes played today they could easily move up.

  6. Post update

With Buttler and Stokes at the crease there was always the slightest chance they could do something remarkable.

But when India took the new ball they blew away those hopes.

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, who was batting with a broken finger, in consecutive balls...

Seán: Might be in vain, but it really is nice to see likes of Rashid, Stokes and obviously Buttler showing a bit of self respect and digging in. Changes the narrative a bit going into the next one

  8. Post update

Eventually Jos Buttler fought through to his maiden Test century.

It has been a long wait for him in the longer format and he looked relieved to get there...

I hope Pope was watching Buttler today. The England team all like to play their strokes but when they play at their best they all give themselves a chance. It's not being negative, you just don't have to go to high risk shots in Test cricket.

  10. Post update

After lunch Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes restored some pride for England. They batted throughout the afternoon, calmly accumulating runs and digging in trying to save the Test for their team.

In total they batted for 346 balls, scoring 169 runs.

Jennings is a concern, there will be calls to replace him but you got rid of Stoneman and Malan, that's like the 80s and 90s. Give him the last two games to prove himself at this level and if he doesn't get a big score you have to say he's had a decent chance.

  12. Post update

At lunch the words on everyone's lips were 'same old England'.

Their top four all were dismissed cheaply. There were some pretty horrible shots.

Keaton Jennings went in the first over and that set the tone...

Joe Root pushed at one and Ollie Pope followed and we thought 'here we go again' but Buttler and Stokes played the Test match way with great patience and skill when the ball was doing plenty. As they batted more and more time I thought it was a partnership which I hope the team was studying. I'm pleased they have got into tomorrow.

  14. Post update

At 62-4 this did not look likely. It looked like England would fall in a heap and be all out just after lunch.

But Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes showed what all England fans wanted to see.

England will still lose this game but they showed some fight.

A really good day's play, we had that initial start where England lost those four quick wickets, then that wonderful partnership and then four quick wickets again. We all know what the result is but we are back for one wicket on the last day.

  17. Close of play - Eng 310-9

Joe Root applauds Anderson and Rashid for their rearguard in this losing cause. It's a bit ridiculous but we're all going to have to return tomorrow even though it might only last one delivery.

This final pair will have to score 211 runs for England to win tomorrow in 90 overs.

    India need one wicket.

We haven't had news of how much it costs to come in tomorrow...I don't think it will be a fortune.

  19. Close of play - Eng 311-9

We're coming back tomorrow! Start those rain dances, England fans.
