  1. Farewell

I'm not sure that we are going to get any more reaction from Galle to be honest.

Let's call it a day - see you back here at 4am tomorrow?

We will have a podcast with reaction from Aggers and Michael Vaughan for your commute home, but in the meantime check out the full report here.

    Hats off Sir...

League umpire: Oh look! 91 overs in the day, perhaps everyone else should try to do that

Dave: What a turnaround! From 103/5 and a sadly all too familiar top-order collapse to 321/8 What a debut by Ben Foakes with top knocks from Buttler & Curran with a fine cameo from Rashid. Great opportunity now to end such a wretched away run in Tests…

  4. 'I didn't expect to play'

More from Ben Foakes: "I didn't expect to play at all. When Rooty told me yesterday I was pretty surprised, I'd had a month off cricket.

"I think I'll sleep OK, I'll pass out. It's hit me hard today."

  5. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on The Cricket Social

If you look at today, the pitch is good, the bounce is true. You've got to look at the mentality of how the batting unit are delivering on a consistent basis.

  6. Post update

The Cricket Social is finished for the day but it'll be back from 07:00 GMT tomorrow to follow events on day two in Galle.

  7. 'A fantastic day'

    Ben Foakes

England debutant Ben Foakes on Sky Sports: "It was a whirlwind. I always dreamt of my debut, I had a lot of emotions this morning but to get out there and get off the mark eased things. It was a fantastic day.

"It looked tough this morning, it spun a lot. I was trying to grind and make it hard for them to get me out. I had to nudge and nurdle which is my game and then it got easier to score as the day wore on.

"I haven't got the array of shots of some of these guys, I try and play a simple game. It was a good day for us. The fourth innings on that pitch could be tough so this could be a good score."

  8. Foakes stays in

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on The Cricket Social

From what I've seen today, Ben Foakes stays in the side. Who gets left out of the team? I don't know.

Could Jonny Bairstow open the batting? He could do but whether you would want him to is another question.

  9. Stats of the day

    Andy Zaltzman

    The Cricket Social statistician

No England wicket keeper has ever made a century in a Test match in Asia. In their last 50 first Test innings, they have been four wickets down for fewer than 100 runs on 21 occasions.

  10. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain on The Cricket Social

Of all the teams in the world, you would want to watch England. There is every chance they will be 100-4 and recover, every time they play.

Ben Foakes will be very proud of how he coped with the situation. The team were desperate when he walked out to bat. He deserves 13 runs tomorrow for his hundred.

He has played with calmness and control. He did it beautifully.

  11. Post update

    Isabelle Westbury

Former Middlesex captain on The Cricket Social

England have a very good middle order and a lot of questions about the top order. There are no answers from today. It's a stellar cast lower down the list.

  12. 'You would want to score 400'

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC cricket correspondent in Galle

It has been an intriguing day's cricket I must say. Ben Foakes has played so well, shown application and a straightforward manner which you need to bat in a Test match.

As he walked over the ropes at the end of the day who was there to slap him on the back?Jonny Bairstow.

Is it a good score? No, not yet. You would look to score 400. But England are hanging on by fingernails at the moment.

    Adam Green: That’s Galle, Foakes.

  14. Alternative slogans

    #bbccricket or text 81111

Sir Viv Richards is asked on The Cricket Social what slogan the great West Indies' team of the 1970s and 1980s would have had:

  15. BreakingEnd of day one

    Eng 321-8

England would have taken that before lunch when they were five down. For sure.

  16. Eng 321-8

    Foakes 87, Leach 14

Jack Leach gets a bad ball and puts it away! Well, almost. It runs out of gas and doesn't reach the fence. But Suranga Lakmal has a brain fade, picking the ball up with his foot over the rope and that is four more.

Leach chops the final ball of the day to the fence as well! Well played that man.

  17. Eng 313-8

Jack Leach paddles another one through the slip cordon and they run two. Ben Foakes has confidence in his humber 10!

  18. Post update

This is the most runs England have scored in a single day's play in Sri Lanka.

  19. Eng 311-8

    Foakes 87, Leach 4

Edged! Jack Leach does edge one, it goes between first and second slip and Leach runs three.

We will have an extra over...
