  1. Farewell

Right, so after that incredibly frustrating day, we'll try again for the second ODI between England and Pakistan in Southampton on Saturday.

Play starts at 11:00 BST so join us from about 10:30 for live (and hopefully full) coverage.

Stephan Shemilt has quilled a brief match report of this no result here.

And we'll see you on Saturday. Cheers!

  2. Post update

Here are the highlights - slender though they may be - from today's play.

At least we had time for Jofra Archer to impress again...

Nineteen overs of cricket was all we could manage in the end.

Jofra Archer has lovely figures of 4-2-6-1, while Liam Plunkett was also in the wickets with 1-27 from his four overs.

  4. BreakingMatch abandoned

And that, I'm sorry to say, is that.

I think it was the outfield that was causing concern - it looked soggy out there and, with the World Cup a few weeks away, any injuries on a damp outfield would be a nightmare.

The umpires are going up to the Pakistan dressing room and they're shaking their heads...

    Handshakes all around...

One member of the TMS has succumbed to the frailities of his memory. The specs now have to be hung from his neck.

Push your heel into the ground.

Classic techniques from the umpiring team to test the dampness of the outfield.

    Here comes the blotter.

    *Sigh*

  8. Post update

No news yet. Here's Jofra Archer being very good at bowling very fast...

Most of the white tarpaulin is off the field now. The umpires are having a chat.

News from that chat when we get it...

Chances of play have gone from 'unlikely' to 'probable'.

  11. Post update

Do you remember cricket? I do, vaguely. Hopefully it returns today.

  12. It's not raining...maybe?

Apparently the rain has stopped again and they've resumed removing the covers.

The weather really needs to have a word with itself.

    ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Further inspection at 18:40. Boos from the stands when that announcement comes over the PA.

  15. Pitch inspection at 18:40 BST

News from the pitch inspection - there will be another pitch inspection at 18:40 BST, with a view to resuming play at 19:00.

That would mean more than the minimum required 20-over per side match.

The covers still need to come off and it's looking a bit gloomy over the Oval, I'm sorry to say.

Adil Rashid is sparring with Liam Plunkett on the dressing room balcony.

Bit of a height disadvantage for the leg-spinner. Can't see it going the distance.

  17. Post update

The umpires are coming out for their pitch inspection now.

  18. Post update

This needs to be under way again by 19:45 BST for us to be able to fit in a 20-over match.

That would mean Pakistan coming back out to bat for one over and England chasing a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern adjusted target.

If we get that in, great. But that scenario would be gutting for Pakistan and would favour England.

  19. Post update

Oh dearie me. The outer covers are back on. It's not raining but there is clearly concern it may start showering again.
