  2. Post update

But going for a six to win the game off the last ball of the 49th over, Carlos Brathwaite was caught by Trent Boult on the boundary.

An agonising, stunning, stupendous end to a mad, brilliant, enthralling game.

  3. Post update

Carlos Brathwaite had other ideas, mashing boundary after boundary and plundering 25 off one Matt Henry over to take his side to the cusp of an unlikely win.

Oh and along the way he also brought up his first ever ODI century, having previously had a top score of 50.

    Jeremy Coney

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

If you say how well Williamson has done as a captain, when there were seven overs left, he had two overs each left from Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson, and one from the fifth bowler.

But he left it so that the last three overs had to be bowled by Henry and the fifth bowler. That was a decision that could have gone better.

  12. Winning moment

An astonishing end to an astonishing match.

Leon Lewis: The last two days have shown how important it is to bat first and get a score in tournament cricket. Make your opponents chase. Pressure cricket. Three cracking games.

Brett Hunt: India and NZ both severely tested and both came through in the end, just a worry England didn’t manage to do it and have ultimately lost two games already!

Steve Starrs: How can Fazeer Mohammed claim New Zealand held their nerve? Amateurish bowling allowed Brathwaite to pummel them all over the ground. Inches away from defeat. Unlucky Carlos Brathwaite.

    Sir Curtly Ambrose

Former West Indies bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Kane Williamson is a wonderful cricketer. People mention the likes of Virat Kohli, David Warner, Steve Smith and Joe Root - but for me, Williamson is right up there with them when you look at the talent he possesses.

He carries a lot of weight in this New Zealand team - no one man can win for a team, but with the responsibility he has as captain, New Zealand can always count on him.

    Jeremy Coney

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

Kane Williamson is someone who is very difficult to keep at the non-striker's end - he seems to have a way of scoring twos so he always gets back on strike, and not at a huge risk either. He's also got a very cool, relaxed, calm head - he sees his way through problems.

The last game at Edgbaston was not a fluent or polished innings. But he's a wonderful player, we've known that for a while in New Zealand, and he's also having to captain.

  16. Post update

    Sensational.

    But not quite enough.

  17. Post update

West Indies captain Jason Holder: "A tough game at the end. I'm proud of the guys, especially Carlos Brathwaite. Chris Gayle had a good knock to set the tone for us and was supported by Hetty [Shimron Hetmyer].

"Getting so close I guess it does make it tougher to take but when you look throughout the entire game, there were one or two areas where we fell down.

"Credit to the guys for the way we fought. I can't fault the effort but we have got to seize one or two moments better.

"We lost wickets a crucial stages. Hetty got out at a crucial time and we were always having to rebuild from there.

"All we can do is win all three of our last three games. We've got pride to play for and want to finish the tournament on a high."

    Kevin Howells

    BBC Test Match Special

I didn't realise it at the time, but that first over of the day, with 10 runs and two wickets and an all-run four, set the tone for the rest of the day. Chaos.

Jim, Staffordshire: Best CWC game ever. Carlos Brathwaite - what an innings! Well done both teams - thanks for the entertainment!

Adam in Norfolk: Am I the only one who thinks that was stupid? Why throw it all away, what a superb knock but why not just get the strike back!

Adam (a different one): Matt Henry can now join Ben Stokes in having nightmares about Brathwaite.
