  1. Post update

Thanks for joining us tonight - the next football on our website is tomorrow's coverage of Aston Villa and Southampton in the Premier League.

It might well have more quality than today's game if we're being honest.

So until then, check out our Milan match report and come back to our European football index tomorrow for reaction from Roberto Mancini.

  2. Post update

    Marseille players celebrate

Over in France, Marseille have just returned to the top of the Ligue 1 table. They came from behind to beat Bordeaux 3-1 to overtake Paris St-Germain.

Logan, Basingstoke: If you told someone these two teams used to be greats of Italian football they'd find it hard to believe you.

  5. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

And how about the match stats, you might also wonder. Fairly close - Inter had slightly more possession and shots on target. Milan had more shots in total, and corners too.

  6. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

What does that do the table, you might ask. AC Milan are up one place to seventh, while Inter remain ninth.

    Serie A table
  7. FULL-TIME

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

A point a piece is probably fair enough. It was entertaining at times but, as predicted, quality was not the name of the game - except for the two goals.

  8. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

Andrea Poli is almost an AC Milan hero, the ball lands to him 12 yards out and it's deflected wide. Just.

It was an agonising wait to see which side of the post that ball flew past.

  9. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

Keisuke Honda takes the ball forward but fails to create a chance. Inter break and Diego Lopez comes out to the edge of his box to claim it and almost slides outside the area with the ball in his hands. A close escape there.

Rian Hoskins: Wonder if Torres will be at AC Milan for the two year loan if he coninuingly fails to perform? A shame as he used to be great

I'd be surprised if he is still there in a year's time.

  11. INJURY TIME

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

A slight hold up for a Fredy Guarin injury but we're back under way now. Four minutes of stoppage time.

  12. SUBSTITUTION

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

Dani Osvaldo - on loan at Inter Milan from Southampton - replaces Mauro Icardi up front.

Final roll of the dice from Roberto Mancini?

  13. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

AC Milan get a controversial corner as Adil Rami looked to have run the ball out of play before winning the set-piece. Keisuke Honda's corner is terribly however and fails to beat the first man, who must have been about 10 yards away.

  14. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

AC Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy has a chance at goal but Inter defender Juan Jesus does enough to block his shot.

Milan midfielder Michael Essien has cramp but he's fine to continue.

  15. HITS THE WOODWORK

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

This time it's Inter Milan who hit the crossbar, Mauro Icardi's first-time volley from Fredy Guarin's cross was brilliant but it's just too high.

Ten minutes to go, both sides will fancy their chances of a winner. But can either side risk losing?

  16. Post update

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

AC Milan substitute Keisuke Honda cuts in from the right and fires in a decent shot although it's straight at Inter keeper Samir Handanovic.

He's done more in his three or four minutes on the pitch than Fernando Torres did in over 70.

  17. HITS THE WOODWORK

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

Stephan El Shaarawy should make it 2-1 to AC Milan, he's played through by a fantastic Giacomo Bonaventura ball but he hits the crossbar from the edge of the box. He had more time - he should have got it right. Huge let-off for Inter.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONS

    AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan

Another poor day for Fernando Torres comes to an end - he is replaced by Keisuke Honda. That's one goal in 10 Serie A games now for the Chelsea loanee.

Roberto Mancini makes his first change since returning to Inter Milan boss - Hernanes comes on for Joel Obi in midfield.

  19. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

Dan Washbourne: Oh Fernando. You used to be glorious. Why did you let Chelsea ruin you so?

  20. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

Rabin: This game is more like North London derby, only difference, we would never share the same ground.

  21. GOAL

AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan - Joel Obi

    Joel Obi
    Joel Obi

It's been a game short on general quality but when the goals have come, they've been very good. The ball comes to Inter Milan midfielder Joel Obi, who guides a shot perfectly into the corner from the edge of the area. A fine finish.

And not a bad celebration either.

  22. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

    Fernando Torres

If I've not mentioned Fernando Torres much, it's because he's done very little, a few misplaced passes aside.

  23. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan have a few chances to shoot but fail to take any of them, then the ball is poorly cleared by Adil Rami, straight to Mauro Icardi, whose shot is miles off target.

  24. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

It's almost 2-0 to AC Milan as Giacomo Bonaventura has a sniff at goal, his shot from an angle is deflected just wide - the corner comes to nothing.

Inter Milan counter and Philippe Mexes gets the ball out for a corner under pressure from Rodrigo Palacio.

  25. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan come out on the front foot, they win a corner but AC Milan keeper Diego Lopez claims it.

  26. KICK-OFF

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

    Second half is under way.

  27. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

AC Milan players are back out, Fernando Torres appears to be praying.

And here Inter's players come - no changes from either side at the break.

  28. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

    Roberto Mancini
    Roberto Mancini

Will Roberto Mancini make any changes at the break? Not loads of proven striking quality on the bench - Dani Osvaldo and teenager Federico Bonazzoli are his main options up front.

    Milan derby stats
  30. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan have a corner approaching injury time. But it goes out for a throw-in on the other side. Shocking. One minute of stoppage time.

  31. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

It's been a decent game so far, but perhaps more Aston Villa v West Brom than Barcelona v Real Madrid.

Inter Milan coming forward now but fail to get the ball into the box. There's not been much between the teams so far, bar one fantastic goal obviously.

  34. YELLOW CARD

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan midfielder Joel Obi is the second player booked - for steaming into Adil Rami. What odds a red card at San Siro at some stage tonight?

  35. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

    Rodrigo Palacio

Is there a more hateful haircut in world football than Rodrigo Palacio's?

  36. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

Dodo is back on the pitch now and clears a cross with his head.

However, Fredy Guarin is now limping for Inter after that Philippe Mexes foul.

  37. YELLOW CARD

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

    Philippe Mexes

AC Milan have a corner now, Dodo is still off the pitch. They whip the ball into the box but it's hit too hard and Milan go back to the halfway line before coming forward again slowly.

Inter Milan break however, their first touch of the ball in a while, and Philippe Mexes is booked for fouling Fredy Guarin.

  38. Post update

    AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan defender Dodo had come back on but he's now off receiving treatment again, trying to stop the blood. Inter will have to decide whether to stick or twist with him soon.

  39. GOAL

AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan - Jeremy Menez

    Jeremy Menez
    Jeremy Menez

Well whatever Pipo Inzaghi told his team to do, it's worked - and in style.

Stephan El Shaarawy cross is met by Jeremy Menez, who steers the ball home with a fantastic, first-time, side-footed volley from 12 yards.

    Woof.

  40. Post update

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

AC Milan defender Mattia De Sciglio decides to outdo his team-mate and has a shot that is even worse. It's from an angle and it's high and wide.

Has Pipo Inzaghi sent his team out with the instructions, just get your shots away no matter what?

  41. Post update

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

AC Milan's Jeremy Menez lines up a kick and it's three points. Oh wait, this is football and not the rugby autumn internationals. His free-kick is horribly over the crossbar.

Inter Milan still slightly on top of possession so far.

  42. Post update

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan defender Dodo is down on the ground with a lot of blood pouring from his face, looks like his nose. He was caught by Sulley Muntari's arm but the high-speed collision looked accidental.

Luckily he's able to walk off the pitch with the medical staff so fingers crossed no serious damage done.

Rob in Maidstone: I used to love watching Italian football in the late 90s with my brothers on a small TV crowded on a single bed on a Sunday afternoon before a roast dinner. The picture never used to be that great though being on Channel 4 at the time.

  44. Post update

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

Second major chance of the game and it's Inter Milan again. Fredy Guarin lines one up from 25 yards, it's got plenty of power but it's straight at Diego Lopez, who gathers it at the second attempt.

  45. Text us on 81111

Dan: This AC Milan side is like a weird collection of young talent and European football's outcasts.

  46. WHAT A CHANCE!

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

    Sulley Muntari
    Mauro Icardi shot is saved

Inter Milan should be ahead. Sulley Muntari gives the ball straight to Mauro Icardi in the centre circle, the Argentine goes on a run and should make it 1-0 but Diego Lopez comes out to smother his shot.

Unbelievably bad play from Muntari there. What was he thinking?

  47. Post update

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

Both clubs have started positively, trying to get forward when they can.

AC Milan have a corner now, but they go short and the chance comes to nothing.

Early indications give me hope of seeing a few goals.

  48. Text us on 81111

Where would these clubs finish in England?

Ross in London: To be brutally honest at the moment how can we slate off the Italian league when the Premier League isn't much better, one good side running away with the league in each league and none doing that great in Europe either. The Prem will be like Serie A in a few years, so the Milans would probably be top six if in the Prem. Premier League is massively overrated at the moment.

Bert: I remember growing up as a football mad kid being mesmerised by the AC Milan sides of the late 80s, early 90s. Seeing them now and how far they've fallen from grace is heartbreaking.

  49. FREE-KICK APPEAL

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan should have a free-kick just outside the box within 40 seconds as Philippe Mexes tugs Rodrigo Palacio down to the ground. Referee Marco Guida is not interested - but that's the wrong call.

  50. KICK-OFF

    AC Milan 0-0 Inter Milan

We are under way at the San Siro - which of course is the home of both sides.

The 213th meeting between these rivals.

Where would these sides finish in the Premier League? Have your say on Facebook.

Michael McDougall: Italian football is dead, no-one wants to play there anymore hence why they only have Juventus and Roma with a team of decent players. The others have a few but nothing like it used to be. Everyone wants to play for Bayern Munich, PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid or the top four English teams - Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Giuliano Oggioni: If they can only reach only eight and ninth in Serie A - a far weaker league than the Premier League - surely top 10 would be optimistic? Below mid-table.

    Marcel Desailly

More from Paul Ince's interview with BBC Radio 5 live.

"In my first Milan derby I was up against Marcel Desailly - a fantastic midfield player. They asked us to do a photo shoot - we had to go face to face and growl at each other, they were going to put it on the billboards in Milan.

"Desailly refused to do it with me - I couldn't understand why. He did it on his own, I did it on my own - standing there growling to myself and he's doing exactly the same.

"On the Friday night before the Sunday, a big massive billboard goes up with me and Desailly growling at each other.

"The game kicks off on the Sunday and first couple of minutes, ball in the middle, 50-50 tackle and I put Desailly on his bum. He looks up at me like he was going to knock me out and I said 'listen, that's for not turning up at the photo shoot the other day'. He laughed."

Matthew R-J: AC Milan almost have the perfect Football Manager 2010 team.

  59. How does Serie A stand?

AC Milan are 14 points off leaders Juventus, with Inter a further point off.

Juventus are already three points clear of second-placed Roma, who are themselves six points above Napoli, who occupy the final Champions League place.

AC Milan v Inter Milan (19:45 GMT)

    Roberto Mancini

New Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini has confirmed something we all suspected in the build-up to this game.

"I don't have a magical wand," he said.

He also said more things to be fair: "I never thought of returning. Only through hard work will we be able to return to win.

"I have been away for six years coaching abroad, in the Premier League and in Turkey, so I will need a bit of time.

"Inter is a top club and I'm happy to return even though when you go back to a place where you have done a good job, you have everything to lose."

"To start with AC Milan is not going to be easy. We have a quality team that has room for improvement but we need to do so quickly."

    Paul Ince and Roy Hodgson

Even Paul Ince, who played for Inter Milan between 1995 and 1997, agrees this game isn't what it was.

He told BBC Radio 5 live on Friday night: "It's like Manchester United v Arsenal compared to 10 years ago - it's not as big now because of the players in it.

"The rivalry is so unique. The fans are so passionate - AC Milan are known as the aristocrats and Inter Milan have been known as the paupers.

"We used to kick off at eight o'clock on a Sunday and it was always delayed for 10 or 15 minutes because there was so much smoke inside the stadium from fireworks and crackers. I couldn't see my midfield partner.

"Those days were fantastic - players like Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta."

  66. Join the debate at #bbceurofooty

Shane Long (not the Southampton striker): Regardless of the strength of the sides, Milan v Inter is the biggest derby in football. Same city, stadium and great histories.

  67. Post update

However Inzaghi has not done much of a job of improving their fortunes since replacing Clarence Seedorf in the summer.

Milan finished eighth last season - the same position they occupy right now.

Inter, who are one place below their rivals, sacked Walter Mazzarri before the international break, and brought Mancini back. They finished fifth last season.

  68. Post update

Of course Inter aren't the only club with a former Italy striker in charge.

AC Milan v Inter Milan (19:45 GMT)

AC Milan make three tweaks from the side held 2-2 at Sampdoria.

Fernando Torres, Sulley Muntari and Cristian Zapata come in for Daniele Bonera, Nigel de Jong and Keisuke Honda.

Inter Milan make two changes from the team that drew 2-2 with Verona last time out. Joel Obi and Fredy Guarin come in for Nemanja Vidic, who drops to the bench, and Gary Medel.

AC Milan: Diego Lopez; Rami, Zapata, Mexes, De Sciglio, Bonaventura, Essien, Muntari, El Shaarawy, Menez, Torres.
