Diego Costa has certainly generated some controversy this evening...

Myles Harrison: Why does Jose go on about the penalty when Costa shouldn't have even been on the pitch? Selective vision.

Josh Andain: Love him or hate him, Costa just doesn't care, he's a fighter.

  4. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Stamford Bridge is eerily quiet now as the players begin to emerge from the dressing room and head for home. This famous old stage has seen a truly epic battle this evening.

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

So who will Chelsea be playing in the final? Tottenham or Sheffield United? The Premier League side go into tomorrow night's second leg in the Steel City with a 1-0 lead from the first meeting.

Chelsea did what they so often do tonight - they got the job done. Clinical. But how much will extra time affect them ahead of Saturday's Premier League title tussle with Manchester City?

  9. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

    Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to BBC Sport: "I thought we had a number of opportunities - Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho. If you assess it over two legs their goalkeeper has won them the tie. He is a world-class keeper.

"I thought tactically our pressing was very, very good. We created chances and gave them problems. Through to half time I don't think they had a shot on target. They are a top-class team and very competitive. This competition has allowed us to regain our identity. Now we have to move on.

"We gave the ball away cheaply for their goal and our line could have been better.

"We were better in every aspect of our game but we just couldn't get the big goals. Sometimes you have a barrier in your way and tonight and last week it was Courtois.

"We are very determined to get back in the Champions League places so we have to stay focused."

  10. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought they were outstanding. Over the course of two legs we were the better team. We had good opportunities to score but didn't score. I feel nothing but pride really because the players gave everything.

"It was difficult when they scored because the players had worked so hard, pressed the game, we changed the shape to get an opportunity to score but I think the legs had started to go a bit in that period."

Exclusive: Can take a loss when we put effort in and try our best, that's all us as supporters ask for. Reality is, you'll win some and lose some.

James Campbell: It's not progress. It's a choke. Liverpool have the same problem. Build-up with no end product. Balotelli has sunk to new lows.

  12. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports after being asked if Diego Costa had stamped on two different Liverpool players: "I don't want to speak about decisions and decisions. If I have to speak to something I have to speak to something I know. When a player stops a counter-attack with a handball it's a yellow card, when a player kicks a player in the box it is a penalty. Speak about Costa and the penalty he had, let Costa play his football."

  13. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on whether the Blues should have been awarded a penalty when Martin Skrtel tripped Diego Costa: "If I speak, people will say Mourinho again. If I speak the FA will try to punish me like they always do, or try. I think it's better for you to do it. But it's so clear that even winning the game I have to ask myself why. But the most important thing is that we won, the group is happy and the supporters were absolutely wonderful. The final at Wembley always means a lot. Wembley has history and the fans they want to go, they pushed us."

  14. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: "This is a new Liverpool team and a very difficult opponent. So I'm even happier because we beat a very good team over two legs.

"The difference was the goal that should have happened before in the 90 minutes. In the second half we had a lot of football.

"Also, my Ramires is back, that's the second best news of the day. The first to be in the final but to have our Ramires back after weeks of work and sacrifice."

  15. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Saidmadrid: Liverpool got some pride back and proved they can compete with Chelsea. Signing Ballotelli wasn't the brightest idea though.

Anase Ogbewele: Chelsea's game plan played out perfectly. A little too many risks taken but job done. Bring on City.

  20. Player reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very hard game. We are very happy we are going to Wembley and waiting for tomorrow's game. This is a game where you show the real character of the team and we are very happy.

"I'm happy with my goal but I think this game is a real example of how the team has to play and the team wins the game."

When? When will the late surge come. Liverpool had to score anyway to take the match beyond ET. If they score now we can all start to think about penalties.

Thibaut Courtois misjudges a high ball and Mario Balotelli picks up on it but he wastes a good opportunity to strike an angled ball into the back of the net, with the keeper off his line.

  42. Post update

Steven Gerrard put the ball into the box, but the referee ends up blowing for a foul. Meanwhile, Thibaut Courtois and Martin Skrtel exchange views. I don't think either was asking the other for restaurant recommendations.

  43. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

    Emre Can

Emre Can drives forward with purpose down the right and is brought down by Oscar. Booking for the Chelsea man and a free-kick to the right of the area for Liverpool. In much the same area that Chelsea scored from.

BBC Radio 5 live Danny Mills at Stamford Bridge

    Diego Costa

"You have to say Gerrard puts a head towards him. We've seen players sent off for that on many an occasion. Costa's horrible, he's annoying - niggly fouls, leaves his foot in at times. But if he's on your team you love him."

  52. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Finally a spark of life from Mario Balotelli who drives in a cross but Raheem Sterling drags his subsequent shot wide.

  53. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

    Steven Gerrard

He's at it again. This time Diego Costa tangles with Steven Gerrard and the two square up to each other. A booking apiece for the ugly spat. Costa's had more fights than Floyd Mayweather this year.

After it all calms down it looks as though a rather composed Costa is almost smirking at Gerrard. Knows what he is doing.

  56. CLOSE!

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

Got to score. Raheem Sterling takes Branislav Ivanovic down the line and puts in a cross but Jordan Henderson heads wide from close range. Big, big miss.

  57. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

"Liverpool have done so much right but they paid the price for all sorts of sloppiness there - from Lucas's cheap concession of the free-kick to poor marking as Branislav Ivanovic scored. They needed to score anyway, if manager Brendan Rodgers wants to look at that with his glass half full."

  62. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

BBC Radio 5 live Danny Mills at Stamford Bridge

"I think Balotelli was stood next to Ivanovic and just left him. It's a lapse in concentration - sometimes you bring centre forwards back, they get sucked towards the ball and don't concentrate on the job in hand. But why was Balotelli in the middle of the goal picking up? You've got to have Can or Skrtel in there."

  63. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Agg: 2-1)

A massive blow for Liverpool, but does it change too much? They still need to score. If they do so without further reply, we're heading for penalties.

Andy in Sheffield: Let's clear up this extra time business once and for all. The reason away goals only count at the end of extra time is to balance out the fact that the team playing at home in the second leg has 30 extra minutes on their home soil, which is an advantage over the team playing at home in the first leg which has only 90 minutes at home.

A brief flare-up follows, with Jose Mourinho and Martin Skrtel exchanging words at close proximity. Steven Gerrard comes in to restore order.

    Hazard and Henderson

Brendan will be a wee bit pleased with Liverpool's pressing so far, as Eden Hazard is pushed back into his own half by the midfield terriers that are Lazar Markovic and Jordan Henderson.

Philippe Coutinho shows some lovely skills in the final third as Liverpool flicker into attacking life again but Alberto Moreno's low cross into the box is not up to scratch. Both sides showing plenty of intent.

    Lucas

"This is the problem I have with penalties. By the letter of the law, it's not a penalty, because his arm is in a natural position, but Lucas Leiva is trying to stop the shot going goalwards and he does so with his hand. I think they should simplify the rules and make sure that in future that's a penalty."

I've just seen replays of that Lucas tackle (5 mins) and the ball clearly strikes the Brazilian on the hand in the penalty area after he slides in. The Reds might have got away with one there.
