  1. Post update

That is it from me though.

Don't forget you can follow all the reaction to Arsenal's 3-1 home loss to Monaco here. You get the feeling Arsene Wenger could be in for a difficult few days.

Anyway, thanks for your company, see you again soon.

  2. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    Possession

I'm not sure anyone expected Bayer to dominate possession quite like that. The positives for Atletico are they are still very much in the game but they will be wanting to watch Fernando Torres' disallowed goal again. How anyone could see if the ball had gone out is beyond me.

  3. Champions League ducks

Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid (19:45 GMT)

    Cham,pions League

Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid have both gone close to winning Europe's elite club competition. Bayer lost the 2002 final to Real Madrid, while Atletico lost the 1974 final to Bayern, as well as last season's devastating loss to Real.

They have a long way to go to catch up with some of Europe's leading lights but it is Bayer who have taken a step nearer the ultimate dream this evening.

  4. FULL-TIME

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Advantage Bayer Leverkusen but you get the sense we are set for a real humdinger of a second leg in a few weeks time. These two sides are not the best friends after that 90 minutes.

  5. Goal

Arsenal 1-3 Monaco - Yannick Carrasco (91 mins)

Disaster for Arsenal as Yannick Carrasco restores Monaco's two-goal advantage. Live text here.

  6. Goal

    Arsenal 1-2 Monaco - Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain (91 mins)

Drama at Arsenal as Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain curls a pearler into the top corner. Hope for the Gunners. Follow the match here.

  7. YELLOW CARD

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

And now things erupt. Fernando Torres goes down under the challenge of Emir Spahic but it is Gonzalo Castro booked for his reaction. The Bayer midfielder is booked but as he receives his talking to, the rest of the players start having a bit of a melee. Torres also sees yellow.

  8. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    Tiago

Bayer Leverkusen have been absolutely superb in this first leg. They more than deserve this advantage and still they push...

  9. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Nervy times for Bernd Leno. The home goalkeeper has been faultless but he blots his copybook as he flaps at a long throw, under the challenge of Diego Godin. but is given a very generous free kick. More for Mr Simeone to feel aggrieved about.

  10. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico boss Diego Simeone has been slowly coming to the boil on the sidelines. With every Bayer foul that is made and every decision that goes against, he is going redder and redder. He is not a happy man.

  11. RED CARD FOR ATLETICO

Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid - Tiago

    Tiago

The night gets worse for Atletico as Tiago receives his second caution of the game for a heavy challenge on Karim Bellarabi. That tackle was largely due to frustration at the disallowed goal minutes earlier.

  12. DISALLOWED GOAL

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    Diego Simeone

Fernando Torres heads the ball into an empty net from yards out but the goal is disallowed and it is a brave, brave call from the official behind the goal. A corner from the left is flicked past his own goalkeeper by Wendell but the ball is adjudged to be out.

  13. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Bayer Leverkusen's dominance can be seen in the amount of passes both sides have made. The Germans have made 389 to Atletico's 244. Just as I write that, the ball drops to Fernando Torres inside the penalty area but he his shot is easy for Bernd Leno.

  14. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Hakan Calhanoglu might be getting a little carried away after his opener. He tries his luck from 40 yards and, despite hitting the target, it is easy for goalkeeper Miguel Moya.

Torres has been a spectator so far.

  15. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    Bayer Leverkusen

    Are things about to change?

  16. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Here comes Fernando Torres. The striker replaces midfielder Arda Turan as Diego Simeone goes for it. In true ABBA style an SOS Fernando.

  17. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico suffered 14 fouls in the first-half against Bayer, more than in the a first-half of any other game this season. It seems the Spaniards are being beaten at their own game.

  18. GOAL

Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atletico Madrid - Hakan Calhanoglu

    Bayer Leverkusen

A sensational strike from Hakan Calhanoglu gives Bayer a deserved lead. It looks as though the chance is gone as Karim Bellerabi dallies on the ball in the penalty area after a driving run. But, just when the chance appears gone, he back heels into the path of Calhanoglu, who unleashes a bullet into the top corner from an angle.

  19. Goal

Arsenal 0-2 Monaco - Dimitar Berbatov (53 mins)

It is turning into a horror show for Arsenal as former Tottenham man Dimitar Berbatov rifles Monaco into a 2-0 lead. Follow the live text of the match here.

  20. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid now haven't conceded a goal for 517 minutes, the longest current run in the competition. Kostas Mitroglou was the last player to score against the Colchoneros, on 16 September.

  21. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Bayer Leverkusen

All sorts of shenanigans going on inside the penalty area as Gabi prepares to send a free kick from the right into the penalty area for Atletico. Referee Pavel Kralovec shouts at everyone, no one listens, the cross comes in and Bernd Leno gathers. All a fuss about nothing.

  22. KICK-OFF

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Here we go again at the BayArena. How important could a goal for either side prove?

  23. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Stats

A look at Mario Mandzukic's touch graphic above shows how tough Atletico are finding things. The Spaniards' top scorer in the Champions League has had just two touches inside the penalty area.

  24. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    First half
  25. HALF-TIME

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Diego Simeone

Must do better will be the message from Atletico boss Diego Simeone. Bayer Leverkusen will be disappointed they have not capitalised on their dominance though.

  26. GREAT SAVE!

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico can't believe they aren't ahead. From the resulting corner, Tiago launches himself into an acrobatic volley but his low strike is brilliantly turned away by the full-length Bernd Leno. You won't see many saves better than that.

  27. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

A rare attack by Atletico sees Mario Mandzukic's 18-yard volley deflected out for a corner.

  28. PENALTY APPEAL

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Not a chance. Wendell goes down with a few pirouettes inside the penalty area but Juanfran clearly gets the ball for Atletico.

  29. SUBSTITUTION

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer's physical approach is certainly taking its toll on Atletico as Diego Simeone is forced into his second change before half time. This time, Saul Niguez lumbers off - having not recovered from the earlier knee to his back - and is replaced by Raul Garcia on the left of midfield.

  30. Goal

Arsenal 0-1 Monaco - Geoffrey Kondogbia

A shock could be in the making at the Emirates as Monaco take the lead through Geoffrey Kondogbia. Danny Welbeck loses possession and the visitors attack with speed, Joao Moutinho squaring a ball to the unmarked Kondogbia, who shoots from more than 25 yards and his effort flies into the back of the net via a slight deflection off Per Mertesacker.

Follow live text of that game here.

  31. CLOSE!

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Left back Guilherme Siqueira can't shake off an early knock ansd is replaced by fellow left back Jesus Gamez.

The change doesn't seem to do the visitors any harm as they are inches from taking the lead just seconds later. Arda Turan lobs the ball over goalkeeper Bernd Leno at the stretch but the stopper recovers just in time to finger tip the ball away from Antoine Griezmann's head.

  32. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

It's not often a Diego Simeone team gets out muscled but that is just what Bayer Leverkusen are doing to Atletico so far. Kyriakos Papadopoulos goes too far though as he is booked for a very meaty challenge. This game could get tasty.

  33. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    stats

Most of the action so far is at Bayer Leverkusen's end. Atletico just can't get hold off the ball.

  34. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Bayer Leverkusen

Atletico are all over the shop at the moment but a lot of that is down to Bayer's high pressing game. This time Karim Bellarabi whips in a cross from the right and Miguel Moya just about palms the ball away from Josip Drmic's head. All Bayer so far.

  35. Text us on 81111

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Kieran from Kent: Is Andy from Armagh having a laugh? How exactly did Atletico find Griezmann and Mandzukic? One was at Sociedad since youth football and Mandzukic was at a club called Bayern Munich prior to Atletico, he may have heard of them.

  36. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Leverkusen

A stunning strike from Emir Spahic deserves better. The hosts' defender unleashes an absolute thunderbolt past goalkeeper Miguel Moya from 25 yards but it cannons off the bar to safety. Strike.

  37. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Saul Niguez is in the wars for Atletico as he gets a boot in the back. The stretcher bearers are primed but, are waved away, as he limps towards the sideline. Treatment will continue.

  38. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Diego Simeone

A look of concentration on Diego Simeone's face as he watches intently from the sidelines. Even when he doesn't mean to, he looks scary... You wouldn't mess would you?

Another corner for Atletico and it again comes to nothing despite a bit of a scramble.

  39. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Not very is the answer going by that. They take it short and the chance is wasted.

  40. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

A sloppy start by Atletico but persistence by Arda Turan near the corner flag has earned them a corner. We know how dangerous they can be from here...

  41. OFF THE LINE

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Wendell

Bayer are taking the game to Atletico early on and they are so very nearly ahead. A corner is swung in from the right, goalkeeper Miguel Moya flaps and misses, and home defender Wendell shoots towards goal from 20 yards. The ball, which is driven into the ground, is diverted goal wards by Emir Spahic but Mario Mandzukic is well placed to hack clear off the line.

  42. Text us on 81111

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Andy in Armagh: Griezmann and Mandzukic have been in great form for Atletico this season. The club has an uncanny knack of unearthing world-class attacking talent, selling them onto the big clubs for huge sums of money, then find more world-class talent. Think of Torres, Aguero, Forlan, Falcao, Costa etc...

  43. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann is flagged offside as he heads over just yards from goal. Replays show he is yards on and he should do better. Atletico will be dangerous from set pieces - they always are.

  44. Post update

    Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Atletico Madrid

A lightening quick break from the hosts as Hakan Calhanoglu breaks with pace through Atletico's midfield. The ball is worked to Lars Bender on the edge of the penalty area but his weak shots dribbles wide.

  50. Post update

Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid (19:45 GMT)

    Bayer Leverkusen

If a two-legged tie against Atletico wasn't daunting enough, the stats don't help Leverkusen's cause.

Bayer have lost their last seven games in the Champions League knockout stages, they haven't progressed further than the last 16 since they were finalists in 2002 and have been eliminated in the last 16 the last three times they made it to the knockout stages.

When you consider they have failed to score in the last 197 minutes in the Champions League - the longest current drought among the 16 teams left in this season's tournament - it does look an uphill task.

    Here come the teams...

  51. Post update

Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid (19:45 GMT)

Domestically, neither side are pulling up trees this season.

Atletico are third in La Liga, seven points behind leaders Real, while Bayer are sixth in the Bundesliga, some 22 points behind champions Bayern Munich.

It doesn't look as though either of them are going to win any silverware in the league this campaign...

Bayer Leverkusen XI: Leno, Hilbert, Spahic, Papadopoulos, Wendell, Bender, Castro, Calhanoglu, Son, Bellarabi, Drmic

Atletico Madrid XI: Moya, Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Siqueira, Tiago, Gabi, Arda, Saul, Griezmann, Mandzukic.

  55. Post update

Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid (19:45 GMT)

    Fixtures

Good evening and welcome to live text commentary of an intriguing last-16 first leg tie between Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen in the BayArena.

Neither side are exactly regulars in the latter stages of the Champions League and both will see this tie as the ideal opportunity to reach the quarter final.

For once though, Simeone's underdogs are probably the favourites.

  56. One-season wonders?

Atletico Madrid were undoubtedly the headliners across the European Leagues last season as they broke the duopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid to win La Liga, before reaching the Champions League final for just the second time.

They looked to be heading for a historic double until Sergio Ramos's injury-time header took the final into extra time and, from there, all hopes were extinguished as Real won out 4-1.

One-season wonders? Try telling manager Diego Simeone that.

  57. So, so close...

    Sergio Ramos

A measly two minutes. One hundred and 20 seconds. One Sergio Ramos header.

That was all that stood between glory and failure for Atletico Madrid as hearts were broken against their bitterest rivals in last season's Champions League final in Lisbon.

Now, they are back and looking to put wrongs right. They can't go all the way again. Can they?
