  1. Goodnight

    Fancy an Italian on Monday?

And that will do us. Those closing 20 minutes were draining and brilliant to watch. I hope you enjoyed what we brought you and please join us for more European football action tomorrow as we run a live text on Roma v Juventus.

We will go live at around 19:15 GMT so bring your best tweets and Italian phrase book.

If it's half as good as that last match, I'll take it.

I'll leave you with this. Eric Bailly sporting a bandage but Cristiano Ronaldo frustrated. Sums up spirited Villarreal and Madrid's frustration at breathing life into the title race...

  3. Tale of an exhilarating draw

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

As many as 34 shots in this one as Real are frustrated. A reminder Atletico Madrid drew 0-0 earlier at Sevilla in an ill-tempered game which saw 11 bookings.

    Real Madrid v Villarreal
  4. Elsewhere in Europe

    PSG miss chance

    Kamil Glik celebrates

All over at Stade Louis II where Paris St-Germain have missed the chance to take top spot in France. They have created more chances than Monaco tonight but with Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, did not have the firepower to get the job done. Lyon will stay top by a single point.

In Italy, Torino have beaten third-placed Napoli 1-0 to move up to eighth with Kamil Glik (pictured) scoring. Good news for Lazio who won earlier and in fourth are now just two points behind Rafael Benitez's side.

  5. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Many column inches will be written about Real Madrid 'dropping' points but Villarreal should not be a footnote here.

They were superbly well organised, their goalkeeper turned up big time and though Eric Bailly conceded a penalty, he was athletic and robust at the heart of defence. You can fully see why they are sixth in La Liga and still in the Europa League.

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

This could well be happening several hundred miles east of Madrid right now.

    Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi

Roll on 22 March when Real Madrid go to Barcelona. Lionel Messi and co. are now just two points behind their rivals and so need rely on no favours. Win all their games and they will be champions.

  7. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Real Madrid corner at the death. This is it. The game in the balance. Marcelo, left-footed to deliver from a short Headed away. It's like a yellow wall. Enthralling stuff.

    That's it...the whistle goes.

  8. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

    Cristiano Ronaldo looks dejected

The super-athlete - Cristiano Ronaldo - leaps like salmon at the back post. Head it across goal, they are lining up...he doesn't and it's over the bar. Barcelona fans, you have 60 seconds left. Pray.

  9. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Toni Kroos is in the box, he teases his man, creates a yard, crosses, deflected and again superbly saved. Asenjo palms it around the post.

Dear me. This is edge of the seat stuff.

  10. Post update

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

The home fans appeal everything. Moi Gomez chests down near the area for this brave Villarreal side..."handball" is the shout (albeit in Spanish). Not a chance.

    Three minutes added.

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Javier Hernandez is in, he's got behind Eric Bailly and is there a pull on the shoulder? No.

The on loan Manchester United striker was travelling at pace and it wouldn't have taken much of a touch. A huge call. Huge. I think he got it right but at the death in the Bernabeu, strong refereeing to say the least.

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

What would defeat do to Real Madrid's confidence? They are on thin ice suddenly as Luciano Vietto gets a glancing header on goal forcing Iker Casillas to fling himself to his left and save. This is intense.

  13. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Real Madrid press. Neat passing but then some variation as Marcelo goes long. Out comes Asenjo in the away goal to collect but he goal...Jese can win it...he puts a tame effort wide.

Eric Bailly was covering to clear off the line but was not needed as from an angle, the substitute could not find the target. What a chance.

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Asier Illarramendi on for Isco. Javier Hernandez on for Karim Benzema.

Every sub used by both managers. Real Madrid have 10 minutes or their La Liga lead will be down to two points. Remember, they must go to Barcelona on 22 March so if the gap is down to a couple of points, a Barca win would put them in charge.

  15. Anyone for a squid bap?

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

If you make a trip to Madrid to see the Bernabeu, Vicente Calderon and maybe even some other lesser cultural entities, you will inevitably need some fuel for your exertions.

    Bocadillo de calamares

In most Madrid bars, you can order a Bocadillo de Calamares, which is not quite the exact Spanish for 'squid bap' ('squid barm' if you are from the north of England) but close enough.

They turn these things out on almost a factory-line basis. Worth the trip alone...

barbuwa kalla: CR7 is in love with the net and that goal make it 30 goal in 3 consecutive season a sort of record. Unbelievable.

Sulaimon Adeleka: I said it last week that Real Madrid will win the La Liga and retain the Champions League and I still stand by it.

Kofi Tawiah Quansah™: I can see the players dressed in black and blue or it yellow and white?

We all know 'that' dress is white and gold Kofi.

  17. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Villarreal top scorer Luciano Vietto is clear...he closes in on Madrid's goal but slips at the crucial moment.

What a chance. He profited from a long ball and gets wrong side of Pepe but the Bernabeu turf brings him down. I did say it was glistening. Longer studs needed.

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Joel Campbell has a swing with his left foot but Iker Casillas is already running to get the ball from a ball boy while it's in mid-air.

Real Madrid look desperate to get three points here and Dani Carvajal is too keen to win possession, tackling his man from behind. Booking.

  19. Eyes on a top-four prize

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

    Luciano Vietto

A run of just two defeats in 14 matches has helped Villarreal into sixth position where a push for a Champions League qualification spot is a realistic prospect.

Argentine forward Luciano Vietto is the man underpinning some of that fine form with 11 league goals this season.

The 21-year-old joined the Yellow Submarine from his Racing Club in his homeland at the start of the season.

He is now on the field. Beware.

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

    Cristiano Ronaldo

"What a save. Spectacular," says a colleague and boy is he right.

No guesses needed for the pair involved. Ronaldo and Asenjo. A glancing header as Ronaldo attacks the near post is in but for a stunning one-handed stop. Asenjo takes flight to get to that. Superb. His left arm was strong to even take the power of the header.

  21. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking right at Eric Bailly and Sergio Asenjo when they close their eyes tonight.

He pushes the ball past and then wrestles Bailly as they duel. The Madrid man gets the better of the muscle war and closes in on Asenjo's goal but the shot is saved by the goalkeeper's legs.

Asenjo dives on the spillage and panic over. A tussle and a half. Just like this last 20 minutes will be.

  22. What and where is Villarreal?

    Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

Now we all know who Villarreal are. Champions League semi-finalists in 2006. La Liga runners-up in 2008. A former home for Manuel Pellegrini, Giuseppe Rossi and Marcos Senna.

But where is this place? It's actually on Spain's east coast and just a short car journey north of Valencia.

    Map of Spain

Only around 50,000 people live in the small city and it's trade is built on the production of ceramic tiles. It is home to four companies listed in Spain's top 500 businesses and all of them are in the ceramic tile trade.

Probably a good few discounts there if you're doing up the bathroom...

  23. GOAL

Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal - Gerard Moreno

    Luciano Vietto

Iker Casillas dives to his left but the ball nestles in the corner. A crisp finish from 18 yards. The Villarreal striker has been impressive and he collects a cross, sets substitute Luciano Vietto who plays a return pass and bang. Get in there.

From the edge of the box it slides off the glistening Bernabeu surface and Gerard Moreno races away to celebrate. The city of Barcelona is doing the same (unless you're and Espanyol fan).

  24. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal

Ronaldo does not try to beat the wall and goes goalkeeper's side. It's a central position so he has a full view of what he's shooting at and Asenjo in the away goal can see the ball clearly. A showdown then...fizzed over.

Again it's not a bad effort but Gareth Bale will surely be screaming to take the next one?

  25. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal

Jaume Costa ghosts in at the back stick to volley left-footed at goal but he cannot hit the target and his effort from around 12 yards goes wide of Iker Casillas's near post.

A spirited response from the visitors who are about to make changes but now face a free-kick on the edge of their own area. Marcelo was hacked down and this has Ronaldo written all over it...

  26. In a league of his own?

    Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal

    Cristiano Ronaldo
  27. The goal machine

    Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal

Leicester City, Aston Villa, Burnley, Queens Park Rangers, Hull, West Brom. What do they all have in common?

None of them have scored as many goals this season as Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 30 in the league.

  28. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal

    Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates

No mistake. Did you really expect one?

In a way the nature of that penalty is a shame. It would have been nice to see Real have to probe to get the crucial breakthrough but now they can relax and do their stuff.

Ronaldo is in again but Asenjo bravely throws himself at the striker's feet to block.

  29. GOAL

Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal - Cristiano Ronaldo (pen)

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Sergio Asenjo in the Villarreal goal dives right but Ronald just lifts the ball the other way. An angry celebration, Ronaldo frowns as if he had a point to prove.

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Real Madrid have a spot-kick. Cristiano Ronaldo is hugged and wrestled to the ground in the area by Eric Bailly.

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Ronaldo. Step-over, onto his right peg, a low drive across goal and palmed into the six-yard box by Sergio Asenjo.

A good save but somewhat fortunate there were no white shirts following up. It only takes one mistake and Real can hurt you. Sergio Marcos was robbed in midfield by Karim Benzema and that single error was nearly the key to the opener.

  32. KICK-OFF

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

No changes. All white v all yellow. Pitch like a snooker table. The high stands of the Bernabeu are jam-packed. Give it 25 minutes and if the score is the same, the galleries will be making their frustration known.

  33. No goals anywhere...

Not a goal in any of the three big games tonight, all of them are at half-time.

Real, Paris St-Germain v Monaco and Torino v Napoli are yet to trouble the scoreboard.

Ezequiel Lavezzi has gone close twice for PSG, missing the target first from central in the box and then from wide, while Edinson Cavani has had an opening but could only force a save.

  34. He just can't stop...

    Germany's in-form man...

    Bas Dost of Wolfsburg

Real Madrid could do with this man - Bas Dost. He may well have the name of an old war ship, but this guy carries some serious weaponry in recent weeks.

He continued his incredible run of form by making it 14 goals in his last nine appearances to help his side defeat Werder Bremen in an eight-goal thriller. You can read all about it here.

  36. Tale of the half

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Intriguing. Open. Madrid with the ball. Villarreal packing a punch too.

    Real Madrid v Villarreal

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

    Real Madrid v Villarreal

This is a Villarreal side much changed from midweek. Only three players in this XI would normally make their line-up and top scorer Luciano Vietto is still to come off the bench.

A great 45 for them all things considered then and they had the bets chance which Dani Carvajal had to head off the line.

Are they going to do Barcelona a big favour here?

  38. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Two minutes of added time because of Eric Bailly's treatment earlier.

Madrid free-kick. A full 35 yards from goal. Here comes Cristiano Ronaldo. the Jonny Wilkinson run up. Claps of expectancy in the stadium. He stands, mouth wide open like a gold fish...BANG...over the bar.

That ball was travelling and not too far away but always just too high.

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Gareth Bale has spent much of the half on the right wing and as he cannot wrap that diamond of a left peg around a cross, he chips one with his right. It floats onto the bar with the keeper scrambling.

Close. A complete fluke for Bale. Well almost.

  40. Post update

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

With every second, every poor pass, every break in play, Barcelona fans grow a little taller here. This result would be huge for them.

Just five minutes until the break. You get the feeling that if Villarreal make it to the interval with the score level they will grow in confidence. Yes they are under pressure but the door is hardly being blown down just yet.

    Marcelino's side look comfortable...

  41. Eyes on Raul record

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo's goal in Real Madrid's win at Elche last weekend made him the club's third-highest scorer of all time.

    Raul and Cristiano Ronaldo

The Fifa World Player of the Year now has 290 goals for the famous club, 33 behind all-time leading marksman Raul. Ronaldo is however the only man among the club's top scorers to average more than a goal a game.

    Real Madrid top scorers
  42. Post update

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

    Eric Bailly

Real Madrid possession. Villarreal have their full-backs tucked in, their wingers tucked in, it's practically a back eight. Does the job though.

It looks like Eric Bailly is OK to continue.

  43. Ouch

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

It looks like Villarreal defender Eric Bailly is in trouble here. He seems to be bleeding from the side of his face. It is not clear how it happened but on comes the stretcher and he needs treatment off the field.

His side are temporarily down to 10. Not ideal against these white assassins.

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has been quiet so he cracks out the step overs. One, two, three, four, they come like gun shots. Fast and threatening. He feeds Marcelo who forces a corner and Raphaël Varane heads just wide.

  45. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

    Gareth Bale heads towards goal

Marcelo advances from left-back to attack Mario Gaspar and he works crossing space to deliver a ball which deflects dangerously across goal. In comes the corner...more pressure...BALE...just wide.

He rose well but glanced it with too much angle.

  46. Latest in France and Italy

    PSG's big chance

Edinson Cavani has a shot on goal

No goals at Paris St-Germain, who can go top in France with a win over Monaco. That game kicked off at the same time as this one - 20:00 GMT.

In Italy, Napoli are still at stalemate at Torino as half-time nears.

  47. Post update

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

The game has started to fall into a pattern and it is not one Villarreal will relish. They have been forced back in the last 10 minutes and Toni Kroos is again in a position to cross, but he overhits the delivery.

After a stellar start by the visitors, things are beginning to turn and Madrid have the look of an organised side with talent aplenty where it matters.

  48. Real banish derby day

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Much was made of Real Madrid's 4-0 humiliation at the hands of local rivals Atletico earlier this month. The result made Tiago pull this face...

    Tiago celebrates

While Real fans probably have nightmare over such a torrid day, their side have responded with two league wins, a Champions League win and three clean sheets in those games.

In all, Carlo Ancelotti's side have lost just twice in 21 league outings.

  49. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

A clear handball from Moi Gomez hands Real a free-kick near the corner flag so Toni Kroos acts as conductor to the orchestra waiting in the box. He raises one arm, that's a signal, back-post delivery is headed over by Pepe.

Pepe is one man I cannot envisage in an orchestra.

  50. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Gareth Bale...right side of the area...onto his left foot...delivers across the corridor of uncertainty...a tap-in surely? Superb defending from Chechu Dorado to hack away under serious pressure.

Bale has been more prominent in the last few minutes.

  51. Post update

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Stop the press. Isco just gave the ball away. The little Spaniard tried to play a pass with disguise, looking one way and passing another, but it was intercepted.

He plays at his own pace and it is lovely to see a player so relaxed with the ball.

Gareth Bale has been quiet so far and he seems to take extra touches when he receives a long ball from Isco in a bid to settle in perhaps. The former Tottenham man forces a corner does he? No. Goal kick.

  52. Villarreal boss wants to impose

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Marcelino's side have three straight wins - two of which arrived in the Europa League. They have not beaten Real since 2009 and have never won at the Bernabeu.

Villarreal manager Marcelino: "We will aim to play a great game, to be extremely competitive and be bold when we have the ball to hurt the opposition.

"It's not easy to win in the Bernabeu. Whenever a smaller team goes there it's imperative that the opposition doesn't have a good day at the office."

Backing up his words so far...

  53. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

BIG CHANCE for Villarreal. You don't get many of these at this ground and both Gerard Moreno and Moi Gomez will wake in the middle of the night if these misses prove costly.

Moreno manages to get in the way of a shot and makes a chance for himself with a good first touch but Iker Casillas is out quick to smother. The rebound has to go

Gomez smashes at goal and it's headed off the line as home players scampered to deny him. Dani Carvajal in the right place at the right time.

  54. Post update

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Arsenal fans may have one eye on Joel Campbell as a future source of goals. He is of course on loan at Villarreal and forces a foul 25 yards out with a driving run. The 22-year-old can shift.

The free-kick by Giovani dos Santos is into the wall.

  55. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

    Lucas Silva has possession

Lucas Silva gets the nod in midfield again for Real Madrid tonight over Asier Illarramendi. The Brazilian is much-hyped and goes in search of his first goal for the club with a shot from 20 yards. Scuffed. Bounces wide.

  56. Isco in the papers

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Isco would have felt 10 feet tall when he read the papers this morning...

    AS front page

His manager Carlo Ancelotti has been stressing the midfielder's importance to the team. He has made them tick nicely in recent weeks and pulls down a high ball to feed Ronaldo here but the Portuguese shoots wide from long range.

  57. CLOSE!

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Lovely stuff from Villarreal. Neat and tidy up the right flank they create space and have runners. Giovani dos Santos is picked out and shoots from an angle at the side netting. The flag is up as one of his team-mates had strayed offside but they opened Real Madrid up like a can of beans there.

The Yellow Submarine follow up by forcing a corner. Good stuff but here come Real...

  58. Post update

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

A visible 4-4-2 from Villarreal. A club who rarely change their style no matter who they face. It's a tight block they operate with though when Madrid have the ball. A sprayed pass looks to get Dani Carvajal down the right but he cannot bring it under his spell...goal kick.

  59. Hands in the air if you make goals

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo has 13 La Liga assists this season, Lionel Messi 10, but who do you think comes in third?

Real Madrid's Isco? No. Luis Suarez? No. Gareth Bale surely? No.

Meet Villarreal"s Denis Cheryshev. He has created nine of his sides' 38 goals but cannot play today as he is on loan from Real Madrid.

    Denis Cheryshev
  60. KICK-OFF

    Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

On paper this one should be easy on the eye. In truth, a bull fight would be more easy on the eye than what was just served up in our last game...

  61. Post update

Real Madrid v Villarreal (20:00 GMT)

Real Madrid's basketball team have won a trophy and they are parading it before kick-off. "Campeone, campeone..." rings out around the Bernabeu and these giant basketball players are loving it.

    Nearly time for the off...

  62. Team news

Real Madrid v Villarreal (20:00 GMT)

Carlo Ancelotti goes with an unchanged Real Madrid side for the third game running.

Luciano Vietto, Villarreal's top scorer is only named on the bench as they make changes from the Europa League win over Borussia Munchengladbach on Thursday.

Real Madrid XI: Casillas, Carvajal, Pepe, Varane, Marcelo, Bale, Kroos, Silva, Isco, Benzema, Ronaldo

Villarreal XI: Asenjo, Mario, Bailly, Dorado, Costa, Pina, Sergio Marcos, Moi Gomez, Campbell, Gerard, Gio.

  63. No need to rotate

Real Madrid v Villarreal (20:00 GMT)

    And so to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was quizzed on whether he would rotate his side for the visit of Villarreal in his weekly news conference.

    Carlo Ancelotti

"Coaches who don't rotate, like me, are criticised as are those who do. I don't know what I can do to avoid being criticised," he said.

"We have reached the most important stage of the season with the squad in good physical and mental shape,"

The former AC Milan boss played down the need to rotate players and warned Villarreal are a team with "a lot of quality", adding they are "a top La Liga side".

Los Blancos have a full week to rest after this encounter with a trip to Athletic Bilbao scheduled for next Saturday.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

And with that whistle, Sevilla surely end the title hopes of Atletico Madrid.

Ill-disciplined throughout. Few chances but ultimately significant in the title race.

Valencia will be happy. This draw means they have a seven point cushion on Sevilla. Fourth place looks comfortable for them.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

In keeping with the game. We have another yellow card. Ever Banega has probably been the best player on the pitch but he cannot escape the card.

    Just 60 seconds remain.

  66. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

There will be three minutes of added time.

Atletico Madrid - the champions - will be six points behind Real Madrid with this draw and their rivals will have a game in hand which we will cover next.

Surely curtains for Atletico this season? Focus on the Champions League.

  67. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Mario Suarez, with the weaving run of Luis Suarez, he finds room 20 yards out to shoot but it's low and too central, an easy save for Sergio Rico.

The big midfielder was like a slalom skier there.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

The referee has given his arm a workout tonight. In and out of his pocket he goes. This time Atletico defender Miranda is carded for an elbow. Pass me the many bookings is that?

  69. Only Freddie -Kan-do it

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Frederic Kanoute

    Closing in on 11...

  70. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Fernando Torres heads

Fernando Torres pounces on a slip by Grzegorz Krychowiak and he is away, running clear from halfway. The substitute does not have the pace so holds the ball up and then takes the defender on again...shooting chance...great chance...narrowing angle...pulled wide.

His name was in lights there.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Stephane M'Bia in the book. The list grows. Too feisty in his aerial challenge with Mario Mandzukic.

In truth, from an offensive perspective this has been tame from Diego Simeone's side. With their fading title hopes on the line, surely they have to offer more?

Mandzukic is under a cross but the Seville goalkeeper will collect that before the striker can even jump.

  72. Some Seville need-to-knows

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

This image, clearly not taken on a smart phone, is that of Christopher Columbus.

    Christopher Columbus

The explorer is buried at Seville's main cathedral. That may sound straight forward but less than 10 years ago, a group of academics contested whether he actually was and performed DNA tests on his son's remains, which are also at rest in the city.

It turns out it is Columbus buried there after all. He had close ties with the city and its port.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

And off comes Carlos Bacca. Surely not bad news for Atletico fans? Kevin Gameiro comes on. He was Sevilla's top scorer last season.

  74. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Carlos Bacca

There is menace in both of these sides. And when I say menace, I don't mean the type which rips an opponent open with dazzling flair. I mean the type of menace which loves a tackle, loves a scrap and lives for a battle.

The midfield area is awash with bodies but as Sevilla get the better of exchanges, Carlos Bacca finds the chance to run at the away defence. He is thwarted by goalkeeper Moya at feet and it's a corner.

No way was Bacca going to get there before the keeper as his touch was heavy but that's the first we've seen of Sevilla's top scorer in this half.

  75. Super Mario in any competition

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Super Mario

Mario Mandzukic has been banging them in for Atletico this season and his record stands at better than a goal every two games in each of the competitions in which he has played...

    Mario Mandzukic goals

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Reyes with a reverse pass and Vitolo is in, great chance for a pull back but across comes Mario Suarez to thump the ball for a corner. I think Mario Mandzukic is coming on.

Three up top for Atletico or is Griezmann making way? He is.

  77. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Raul Garcia nips into a 50-50, wins it back for Atletico. Ball tossed forward, lost. Cross into the box from Sevilla, hacked away. Throw in.

Jose Antonio Reyes shoots on the swivel...wide.

This is bitty, disjointed and where the moment of telling magic will come from is hard to guess. Possession turns over fast in this one.

  78. Go for it...

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    ATletico Madrid celebrate
  79. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Torres to Griezmann, back to Torres...this break has momentum, he shoots and it is held low down by Sergio Rico. He had much to do from 20 yards but more intent from the away side now.

Torres has looked vibrant since coming on and Griezmann looks better with and out-and-out striker alongside him.

  80. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Fernando Navarro dribbles a shot at goal for Sevilla from 25 yards. That is practically a pass back.

This game needs some more quality in the final third. Jose Antonio Reyes is about to enter the fray.

  81. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres, we didn't know you still had pace like that.

The former Liverpool striker skips down the left touchline and blows away chasing defenders. It's a la Gareth Bale in last year's Copa del Rey final. Will he go it alone? No. A pull-back for Antoine Griezmann and it is a fraction behind the blonde-headed forward who cannot guide it at goal.

Superb by Torres. Unlucky not to yield more.

  82. Searching for a League goal

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres has managed three goals in the cup since returning to Atletico but...

    Fernando Torres

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Here comes Fernando Torres for Arda Turan. The Atletico midfielder trudges off. He does not look thrilled but it's hard to tell through such a thick beard.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Alejandro Arribas nods Ever Banega's delivery from the free-kick won by Vidal and it is just kept out by Miguel Angel Moya.

He has to hold on tight on the goal line with players waiting for an easy rebound.

That is as close as anyone has come.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid resemble Stoke City at their best in defending the heart of their penalty area as Ever Banega bids to wriggle shooting space. He is swarmed like Bees around honey.

And guess what, we have seven yellow cards now. They are arriving quicker than touches of the ball in this second period. Mario Suarez this time for an elbow on the man consistently fouled, Aleix Vidal.

    Fernando Torres warming up.

  86. Is he a 'special one'?

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid fans will never forget the final day of the 2013-14 season, when their side ended an 18-year wait for a league title by holding Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Just how did Diego Simeone do it? His job since joining on 23 December 2011 must rank alongside the great impacts made by any manager of any side throughout the ages.

He has guided his side to the Europa League in his first season in charge, the Copa del Rey a year later, with the title and runners-up spot in the Champions League arriving last season.

    Diego Simeone

Atletico collected 90 points in 2013-14, making it the most successful domestic season in their history.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Aleix Vidal

Copy and paste but change name. Jesus Gamez is booked for a foul on Aleix Vidal near the touchline. We have five cautions.

Antoine Griezmann is booked. Again it's Vidal on the end of it. The French attacker slid the ball but followed through and caught the home full-back on the knee. We have six cautions.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

It tells you much about this game that every bursting run in midfield is contested with a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge.

Gabi on the burst like a a sprinter out of the blocks here and he tries to break Sevilla's midfield line but is brought down by Grzegorz Krychowiak who berates the official.

Dead ball comes to nothing again.

  89. Goals slipped but still challenging

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Sevilla may be fifth in La Liga but they have lost four of their last six league games.

    Sevilla celebrate

The Europa League holders kept up the defence of their European honour on Thursday by seeing off Borussia Monchengladbach 4-2 on aggregate.

But they have leaked goals domestically, conceding 30 in all in the league this season, comfortably more than any side in the top six.

  90. KICK-OFF

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

We are back underway. Nothing in it. Atletico Madrid know all about unlikely league titles and have to keep believing. Sevilla could still get back into the Champions League.

    What have you got fellas?

  91. French showpiece to come

    Can PSG top Ligue 1?

French football journalist and friend of BBC Radio 5 live Julien Laurens is not really selling Paris St-Germain v Monaco...

    Julien Laurens twitter

They play at 20:00 GMT and PSG can go top of Ligue 1. Regardless of the players out, we here are very much in and will bring you updates alongside our live coverage of Real Madrid v Villarreal.

  92. Inter's stuttering form continuing

    Italia Sunday

Mohamed Salah clearly wasn't watching Chelsea win the League Cup today. He has bagged for Fiorentina and they are seven minutes away from beating Inter Milan.

  93. Dutch top two battle

    Elsewhere in Europe...

The title race is still alive in the Netherlands. Just.

Ajax, second, have beaten PSV Eindhoven, first, 3-1 today.

The gap at the top is still 11 points and PSV are surely on their way to a first title since 2008.

  94. Cavani and Cazorla in, Turan to Liverpool

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid lost Diego Costa from their title-winning group in the summer and with los RojiBlancos still very much under the watchful eye of scouts all over Europe, more of their talent is being linked with a move away.

The Sunday Express says midfielder Arda Turan could be on his way to Liverpool, with Diego Simeone lining up Arsenal's Santi Cazorla as a replacement.

But the Daily Star reports Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is their main target and funds will have to be raised to complete his capture.

Do you think he will be this happy to move to Madrid?

    Edinson Cavani

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Neither goal breached. Neither overly threatened (this chin-up aside).

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Early on in a season a draw at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan would probably be seen as a good point. Here, that would not be enough for Atletico as they have to surely win consistently now if they are to retain their title.

The final 20 minutes will be exciting here. Lots on the line.

  96. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann is flagged offside. That's one offside for each side in this opening half. He looks Atletico's brightest spark as you would probably expect. Fernando Torres and Mario Mandzukic on the bench remember. There is firepower there if they need it later but has Diego Simeone been too cautious?

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Coke shoots at goal

Sevilla right-back Coke has a 'have it' moment. The ball drops to him 20 yards out and he puts the laces through it. That ball is in orbit. Nasa will see it before any of the home ball boys. High, wide, over and gone.

Gabi is booked. Another foul in the centre of the pitch.

  98. Ouch!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Is Gabi going in the book here? He is late on Ever Banega. Referee walks over with intent but does nothing about it. Just a free-kick.

Half time is approaching and while intense, this has not really offered a clear-cut chance. There is discipline on both sides in terms of tracking runners, covering space and generally doing the ugly side of the game. We need something pretty though...

    Raul Garcia is fouled

As Rayo Vallecano's Alberto Bueno scored four goals in 16 minutes in their win over Levante on Saturday, while Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cracked out the Batman and Robin masks to celebrate a goal in their victory, we have a novel talking point for you today.

How would you celebrate if you netted four goals in a game?

    Riley Impey: Hug the goalpost.

That would be a great example for the next generation Riley.

Similoluwa Akinbode: I would somersault eight times like the Nigerian player Obafemi Martins.

Rather you than any of us Similoluwa.

  100. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Football looks easy from a distance and nothing is better than seeing a player - in the thick of frenzied action - spot a pass and execute it perfectly. Antoine Griezmann does just that to release Arda Turan.

The Turkish international, shin pads roughly as low as his ankles like always, can only force a corner and it's an easy take for the keeper. Lovely stuff from Griezmann and this is settling down now. More fluid.

  101. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

A slick drag back in the area from Carlos Bacca flummoxes his marker and creates space but he is falling as he shoots and that will beat the cross bar. He has been lively. Looks more likely than anyone.

  102. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Unai Emery

Unai Emery - the Sevilla boss - stands on the touchline. He has clearly used a tub of gel as always and sometimes it's as if it seeps into his pores. Some sort of potion must be stimulating his animated manner week-in-week-out.

He looks nervous as Gabi delivers a free-kick but Raul Garcia at the back post cannot get his 10th goal of the season. His header is too high. Get the comb out Unai. Panic over...

  103. Tiki-Taka, counter-attack, Cholismo

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

    Diego Simeone

We have all heard of 'Tiki-Taka' - the brand name if you will of Barcelona's coveted style of play. Counter-attacking style is a feature of many sides, but what about 'Cholismo'?

Are you as confused as me? Diego Simeone, nicknamed 'El Cholo', is said to have instilled his own 'Cholismo' brand in Atletico Madrid.

It sounds like some sort of fancy sausage or foreign cheese, but in fact in his world, it's an ethos where not one player is seen as a star in the team and instead, the emphasis is on hard work by each and every member of a squad to create a stronger collective.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Home fans in good voice now. A flury of potential fouls - none of which are given - has got the blood boiling but again Banega is the picture of calm as he lifts his head to pick out Vicente Iborra's run into the box. The leggy midfielder is there before the goalkeeper but finds the foot of the post with a prodded volley.

Home fans bang up for this. Atletico will probably take the sting out. They can be sponge like and soak up their surroundings when they want to be.

  105. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Scurry runs. The players in this one are fizzing around almost mischievously. No pattern to the game...they won't allow it.

    Sevilla v Atletico Madrid

Ever Banega plays a volleyed pass. It's simple but draws an appreciative sigh from the home fans as not enough composed play is on offer so far. Vitolo profits and runs at the Atletico back four. He's hacked down as the rhythm is broken again but no free-kick given.

  106. La Liga on Sunday

    Valencia win, Moyes defeat

Pablo Piatti was at the double for Valencia in the day's early kick-off, much to the frustration of Real Sociedad and their manager David Moyes.

The Scot saw his side lose 2-0 at the Mestalla and he has yet to win a league game away from home since taking charge.

    Pablo Piatti

Valencia solidify their standing in fourth and are level on points with Atletico having played a game more.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao won 1-0 at Eibar.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Down you go. Do not pass go.

Superb work rate by Antoine Griezmann wins the ball back high up the pitch. Raul Garcia compliments it with some fancy footwork and he is rugby tackled by Alejandro Arribas. In the book you go son.

    ENgland v Ireland

Great area. Just 20 yards from goal, Griezmann left-footed...over. He is capable of far more in those positions.

  108. GREAT SAVE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Moya has to throw himself to his left to prevent an own goal as a deflected pass nearly gets diverted past him.

A good honest start from Sevilla. Lots of intent and Atletico are soaking it up. They love it though. The ultimate boxer on the ropes capable of flooring an opponent just when you think they are about to cave in.

  109. CLOSE!

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

The first shot in anger comes from Colombian Carlos Bacca. Who would have thought he would have more goals in La Liga this term than his expensive compatriot James Rodriguez at Real Madrid?

Bacca has a ping from 25 yards. It's a low one but Miguel Angel Moya saves easily

  110. Hot-shots on show

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Sevilla's Carlos Bacca and Atletico's Antoine Griezmann have 14 goals each in the league this season.

    Carlos Bacca and Atoine Griezmann

Only Cristiano Ronaldo on 29, Lionel Messi with 27 and Neymar on 17, have more.

  111. Post update

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Carlos Bacca has been a handful for Sevilla all season and has the goals to prove it. He's being a nuisance for Gabi - who is occupying the right side of Atletico's three central midfielders.

Gabi's foul near the edge of the box gives Sevilla a free-kick in a good area but Ever Banega cannot get the ball through bodies and the chance evaporates.

Jad Haddad: Take off my shirt.

    Sevilla 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Vitolo bursts into the area and performs what looks like a swan dive which as you'd expect gets the home crowd off their seats. Juan Fran is the offender in their eyes but he just stood his ground.

Vitolo tangled up with him but nothing doing and rightly so.

A warm embrace between Diego Simeone and Unai Emery on the touchline. Very much an evening feel to this one as the sun begins to fade.

  116. As it stands...

So here is exactly how it stands before a busy day of action at the top of La Liga...

    La Liga

  117. Players on the grass..

Sevilla v Atletico Madrid (18:00 GMT)

Players on the pitch at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and the home fans are singing passionately.

This caldron of noise is the type of venue where the big sides know they will be put under examination, pushed around, given a hard time and will generally have to produce if they are to leave with three points.

Atletico have to leave with three. Anything less would surely end their title defence?

  118. Simeone's warning

Sevilla v Atletico Madrid (18:00 GMT)

    Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone: "We are going to play against a team that is doing very well, which has been working for two years with a continuity and a balance that makes it very competitive. It's an important match because of where the League is at."

Simeone will be thrilled to have playmaker Koke back among his ranks and on the bench. The 23-year-old has not played due to injury in three weeks and has made eight assists in the league this season.

  119. Goals flowing in Germany

    Bas Dost on target again

Meanwhile in Germany, the brilliantly named Bas Dost is at it again for Wolfsburg. The side second in the Bundesliga are 5-3 up after an hour at Werder Bremen.

    Opta Franz

If they hold on the gap to Bayern Munich will be down to eight points.

Earlier, Borussia Munchengladbach beat Paderborn 2-0.

  120. Sunday Italia

    Wins for Europe chasers

    Samuel Eto'o

Lazio and Sampdoria bolstered their hopes of European football next season with wins in Serie A early on Sunday.

Stefano Poli's side won 3-0 away at Sassuolo and stay fourth, two points behind Napoli who play Torino later.

Samp meanwhile came from behind and Stefano Okaka Chuka bagged a winner nine minutes from time to see off Atalanta 2-1, a result which prompted striker Samuel Eto'o to give his shirt to fans. He wears the number 99.

There was a big win for second-bottom Cesena over Udinese to keep them within four points of safety.

  121. Costly mistakes hamper Atleti

Sevilla v Atletico Madrid (18:00 GMT)

Atletico suffered defeat at Celta Vigo two weeks ago today, a loss which has left them with a mountain to climb if they are to reel in Real Madrid in this title race.

    Guilherme Siqueira

A 3-0 win against Almeria last week at least returned Diego Simeone's side to league form, though they were beaten again in the Champions League in midweek as Bayer Leverkusen secured a 1-0 lead to take to the Vicente Calderon on 17 March.

Sevilla v Atletico Madrid (18:00 GMT)

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone appears to pay Sevilla some respect with what looks likely to be a 4-3-2-1 formation. Both Mario Mandzukic and Fernando Torres are left on the bench with Antoine Griezmann leading the line solo.

Sevilla had Europa League commitments on Thursday but keep their front six unchanged. There is movement in the back four though as Coke, Fernando Navarro and Alejandro Arribas come in.

Sevilla XI: Sergio Rico, Coke, Arribas, Kolo, F. Navarro, Iborra, Krychowiak, A. Vidal, Banega, Vitolo, Bacca.

Atletico Madrid XI: Moya; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Gamez, Gabi, Tiago, Mario, Raul Garcia, Arda, Griezmann.

  124. Sizzle, sizzle...

Sevilla v Atletico Madrid (18:00 GMT)

Seville is often referred to as the 'frying pan of Spain' as to put it mildly, it gets hot there.

Fairly straight forward in theory then but between now and the season finale on 23 May, inevitable twists and turns await.

With four teams in La Liga's top six facing off against one another today, now seems as good a time as any for the definitive drama to take place.

Barcelona made straight-forward work of Granada on Saturday. They will wake from their siesta today to see if their title rivals have it as easy...
