  5. Post update

Atletico Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen on penalties

Atletico were far from their best today - neither side could have felt they definitely deserved to go through - or out. But the Spanish champions join Monaco in the last eight.

  6. Post update

Atletico Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen on penalties

    Stefan Kiessling

Stefan Kiessling, who missed the key penalty, is in tears. He is being consoled by Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak. I'm sure that won't be of too much comfort.

  7. Post update

Atletico Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen on penalties

    Atletico Madrid celebrate

Atletico go through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League but Bayer Leverkusen's players look devastated.

  8. MISSED PENALTY

Atletico Madrid 3-2 Bayer Leverkusen - Stefan Kiessling

But they miss! Another strike goes sailing over the crossbar and Atletico Madrid, finalists last year, live to fight another day.

  9. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 3-2 Bayer Leverkusen - Fernando Torres

    Fernando Torres celebrates

Class from Torres - the club legend picks out the die netting. Keeper had no chance.

    Leverkusen must score...

  10. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen - Gonzalo Castro

All square again! No-nonsense strike into the bottom left corner.

  11. MISSED PENALTY

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen - Koke

And now Koke misses. Powerful low drive but the keeper dives the right way and fists it away.

  12. MISSED PENALTY

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen - Omer Toprak

The calmest run up you've ever seen... and the least calm strike you've ever seen. Blazed high and wide. Shocker.

  13. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen - Mario Suarez

That's three in a row into the top-right corner. Calm and confident, top class.

  14. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen - Simon Rolfes

Was that a replay? A complete copy of the previous kick and it's all square.

  15. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen - Antoine Griezmann

That's the way to do it. Antoine Griezmann fires it high into the top right corner.

  16. MISSED PENALTY

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen - Hakan Calhanoglu

    And again!

Straight down the middle, keeper doesn't move. Still all square.

  17. MISSED PENALTY

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen - Raul Garcia

Oh no! Leans back and blazes it over the bar. Advantage Leverkusen.

Atletico Madrid to take the first kick.

  19. Post update

  21. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

What do we think? I'm predicting Atletico to win.

  22. FULL-TIME

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Rarely has a game been more destined for penalties. And penalties we shall have.

  23. INJURY TIME

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    One minute to go.

  24. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Cramp for Bayer Leverkusen defender Wendell. We might as well just go to pens now, nobody is going to score in the closing seconds.

  25. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

The moment Atletico keeper Jan Oblak came on midway through the first half a colleague called penalties and said the Slovenian would be the hero. Will he be right?

  26. FIVE TO GO

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Five minutes for a hero. If Bayer Leverkusen were to score, Atletico would need two.

Atletico, who reached last season's final, have another chance but Fernando Torres's glancing header is at keeper Bernd Leno.

  27. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Koke has assisted more goals than anyone else in this tournament and he tries for number five as he drops a free-kick onto the head of Fernando Torres, but the Atletico Madrid striker's effort is over the bar.

  28. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Arda Turan

Free-kick to Atletico Madrid in a decent position here as Arda Turan finds Antoine Griezmann who nutmegs Kyriakos Papadopoulos. The Greek fouls Griezmann and goes into the book.

  29. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes almost scores the winner, he has an effort from 25 yards which goes just wide. From the angle I saw it I thought it was going in.

  30. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres goes in the book for lumping the ball away in frustration after they are denied a corner by referee Nicola Rizzoli. To be fair, it did look like a corner.

  31. TEN TO GO

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen have a rare break forward but Gonzalo Castro's dribble comes to nothing and moments later the same player puts in a cross - again to no-one. A wasted opportunity, well two of them.

  33. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

This is one of Atletico Madrid's best openings as Arda Turan cuts the ball in from the right to Raul Garcia, whose venomous shot is saved well by Bernd Leno. This is more like it lads.

  34. KICK-OFF

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Here we go again.

  35. HALF-TIME

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Fifteen minutes from penalties. This is definitely going to penalties.

  36. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Offside flag goes up against Fernando Torres, who looked to have timed his run well. One minute of stoppage time.

  37. SUBSTITUTION

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen make their final change and it's not one a live text commentator wants to see. Defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos comes on for midfielder Lars Bender, who limps off.

  38. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling is booked for moaning to the referee. Three minutes to the break; 18 to penalties.

  39. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Tense is still the word. Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia tackles Stefan Kiessling and has a shot from 30 yards but it's skewed horribly high and wide.

  40. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia is elbowed in the face by Simon Rolfes, who avoids punishment. Garcia, the half-time substitute, is bleeding from his cheek.

Not sure how much intent was there but I've seen players sent off for less.

  41. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Fernando Torres

I'm sure it's anything but for both sets of fans but, as a neutral, this game has been quite boring really considering the importance.

Stefan Kiessling drags a shot for Bayer Leverkusen which is easily saved by keeper Jan Oblak.

This game has penalties written all over it.

  42. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender is limping again after another tackle in what has been a feisty game.

  43. Elsewhere in Europe

Arsenal went out on away goals by the way, winning 2-0 on the night in Monaco but just falling short. Classic Gunners. There is a live text on that match here.

  44. KICK-OFF

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid get extra time going. A reminder away goals are still are a decider in the additional 30 minutes.

  45. Story of the 90 minutes

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Stats

It's been a game higher on tension (and crunching tackles) than excitement.

  46. FULL-TIME

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Extra time it is to decide who goes through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

  47. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico win a corner and their expectant fans are making a lot of noise as Koke crosses it in, however Mario Suarez misses the target under pressure from Lars Bender, who appeared to hurt himself in the tackle.

  48. INJURY TIME

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Both teams have four minutes to score - or else they'll have another 30 minutes to try.

  49. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Three of Bayer Leverkusen's four defenders have been booked now as Wendell slides Fernando Torres from behind after the former Chelsea striker beats the offside trap.

Next goal wins now definitely. Atleti boss Diego Simeone is animated on the touchline, you won't be surprised to know.

  50. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Fernando Torres chases a ball down the left but a Bayer Leverkusen defender comes across to clear the ball for a throw-in, which is basically launched straight into keeper Bernd Leno's hands.

  52. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

That's all three changes for Atletico Madrid now, having brought on keeper Jan Oblak in the first half and midfielder Raul Garcia at half-time.

Bayer Leverkusen have one more change to make.

  53. SUBSTITUTION

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Fernando Torres

Desperate times call for Fernando Torres and Atletico Madrid bring on their returned legend for Mario Mandzukic, who hasn't played overly well tonight.

  54. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid totally on top now and Bernd Leno has to produce a good save down low to deny Arda Turan, who shot after Antoine Griezmann's pullback.

    It's all Atleti now.

  55. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Antoine Griezmann has a chance to score from eight yards out for Atletico but Bayer Leverkusen substitute Simon Rolfes gets himself in the way to block it. Feels like a next goal wins scenario now.

  56. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

This game is getting a bit heated now as Bayer Leverkusen's Hakan Calhanoglu - who scored their first-leg goal - is booked for fouling Jesus Gamez.

It's getting tense at the Vicente Calderon.

  57. SUBSTITUTION

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen bring on Simon Rolfes for Son Heung-min - a defensive minded midfielder for an attacking one.

  58. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Antoine Griezmann has been lively for Atletico Madrid tonight and he pings in a cross from the left which Arda Turan can turn it from six yards out but he tries to flick the ball to Mario Suarez and it's cleared. A waste.

Moments later Suarez is booked for a foul on Hakan Calhanoglu.

  59. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Stefan Kiessling is involved again as he's upended by Jesus Gamez on the halfway line. A yellow card pops out for the Atletico Madrid defender.

  60. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Raul Garcia

Stefan Kiessling's first touch is to deny Atletico Madrid a likely goal. Koke whips in a free-kick which the German gets his head onto with Raul Garcia ready to turn it home from eight yards out.

An added bonus is that the officials don't spot the header so give a goal-kick.

  61. SUBSTITUTION

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen make their first change and it's a striking switch. Stefan Kiessling comes on for Josip Drmic.

  62. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico's Antoine Griezmann takes a long ball in his stride down the left wing and crosses it to Arda Turan, who attempts a first-time sidefooted volley from 18 yards but it's off target.

  63. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

We have a drop ball as Emir Spahic and Mario Mandzukic clash heads causing a break in play. A Bayer Leverkusen player kicks the ball out for a throw-in.

Nowhere near enough contested drop balls these days.

Spahic and Mandzukic are OK by the way.

  64. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

That is a second Bayer Leverkusen defender on the cliched disciplinary tightrope as Omer Toprak is booked for a foul on Turkey team-mate Arda Turan.

He and Spahic are one card away from a red.

  66. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

We are 28 minutes from extra time. The way it's going that is the most likely outcome, neither side look like they are on the verge of a breakthrough.

  67. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico have not conceded a goal in a second half of a Champions League home game since September 2013 against Zenit St Petersburg

The last time they progressed through a European knockout tie after losing the first leg was against another German side, Schalke.

  68. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico having a sequence of corners here, with keeper Bernd Leno punching clear the latest one. Neither team are risking too much here - next goal will be crucial.

Leverkusen break and Karim Bellarabi has a go from 35 yards but it's easily saved by Jan Oblak, who conceded three goals to Olympiakos in his only other Champions League outing this season.

  69. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Not much happening on the pitch at the moment, most of the excitement is on the Atletico bench where it looks like they're about to bring on a player, only for him to suddenly sit back down and put on his bib again.

  70. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Ruds: (Re half-time entry) Waving an imaginary yellow isn't ridiculous - it's unsportsmanlike behaviour and therefore a yellow card. Just as bad as diving.

In my mind it's no worse than appealing for a free-kick or penalty, which people do all the time.

  71. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann - who has some of the brightest bleached hair I've seen - takes Raul Garcia's pass in his stride but Gonzalo Castro does enough to take the ball of the Atletico Madrid forward.

  72. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Fernando Torres warms up, Mario Mandzukic was OK to carry on following his injury in stoppage time but will he last the 90 minutes?

  73. KICK-OFF

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Second half is under way.

  74. SUBSTITUTION

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid handed a first start to 33-year-old midfielder Cani tonight. He lasted 45 minutes, with Raul Garcia - the man he replaced - coming on for him at half-time.

  75. Post update

Sounds like a player swapped shirts at half-time in tonight's other game.

Football really specialises in ridiculous things to get worked up about, doesn't it? My favourite is people getting annoyed by players wearing gloves if they're cold. Or waving an imaginary yellow card.

  76. Story of the first half

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

    Match stats

Before this game, Bayer Leverkusen had conceded the most fouls in the Champions League this season (132) whilst Atletico had suffered the most (122). Both teams definitely sticking to form tonight.

  77. HALF-TIME

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

A decent first half for Atletico Madrid to level this tie, although Bayer Leverkusen will still fancy their chances. One goal from them and Atletico would need two to progress.

  78. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Mario Mandzukic hobbles back onto the pitch, so desperate is he for Fernando Torres not to come on (maybe).

  79. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic is injured after a collision with a Bayer Leverkusen defender there. I think they'll give him half-time in a bid to recover or else we could see Fernando Torres after the break.

Four minutes of stoppage time by the way.

  80. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid defender Miranda keeps his side level in this tie. Bayer Leverkusen's Son Heung-min slips in Wendell down the left and he pulls it across to Hakan Calhanoglu, who tries to pull the trigger but is denied by the Brazilian and sub keeper Jan Oblak is happy to see the ball drop to him.

  81. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen ending the first half on the attack but Atletico Madrid's defence are holding firm.

  82. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Bayer Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi is down injured after a tough but fair tackle from Koke. Physios are on now. He limps off the pitch but is fit to continue.

  83. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

It was far from certain Mario Suarez would start tonight - he didn't at the weekend - but he's been Atletico's best player so far.

  84. Elsewhere in Europe

Drama in Monaco? In the night's other Champions League match, Olivier Giroud gives Arsenal a 1-0 lead against Monaco, meaning the Gunners now trail 3-2 on aggregate. They still need to score twice to progress - and they have around 55 minutes to do it.

You can follow live coverage of that game here.

  85. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez has another shot from 25 yards, this one is deflected too but it's wide for a corner rather than past Bernd Leno.

The corner comes in and Miranda and Jose Maria Gimenez head each other and the ball and it goes out for a goal-kick.

  86. Text us on 81111

    Antoine Griezmann

Andy, in Armagh: Griezmann and Mandzukic have been in great form for Atletico Madrid this season. The club has an uncanny knack of bringing in world-class attacking talent on the cheap, selling them onto the more established 'bigger' clubs for huge sums of money, then going on to find and replace them with more world-class talent. Think of their track record with Torres, Aguero, Forlan, Falcao, Costa etc.

  87. Post update

Emir Spahic concedes a free-kick for clonking Mario Mandzukic from behind with his elbow. The Bayer Leverkusen defender is nearing a red card here...

  88. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

As things stand we would go to extra time (and maybe penalties). If either club score now, that's off the menu.

  89. Post update

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid should now be leading the tie, Arda Turan slips in Mario Mandzukic but he waits to shoot and Bayer Leverkusen's Wendell nips in to tackle him. Wasteful by the summer signing.

  90. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1)

Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez is booked for chopping down Hakan Calhanoglu. Referee Nicola Rizzoli plays the advantage, which comes to nothing and comes back to book the Atleti player.

  91. GOAL

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 1-1) - Mario Suarez

We're all level. The free-kick is whipped in, half cleared by Bayer Leverkusen and there's a bit of tennis on the edge of the box. The ball lands to Mario Suarez, who has a go from 20 yards. It's heading straight for keeper Bernd Leno, but what's this? Defender Omer Toprak gets a touch, which takes it past his own keeper.

    Atletico score
  92. YELLOW CARD

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 0-1)

One player on the pitch will miss the next match if he's booked - Bayer Leverkusen defender Emir Spahic. No prizes for guessing who picks up the first yellow card of the day for a foul on Cani.

Substitute keeper Jan Oblak is warming up. And the 22-year-old Slovenian, who joined the club in the summer, comes on as Miguel Angel Moya limps off with a freak injury.

Oblak has yet to play for Atleti in the league, mainly featuring in the Copa del Rey this season.

  95. Post update

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 0-1)

Son Heung-min is in with a chance here for Bayer Leverkusen as the ball is played centrally to him but his first touch is poor and it dribbles back to keeper Miguel Angel Moya.

The keeper looks injured after throwing himself on the ball...

  96. Post update

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 0-1)

Bayer Leverkusen have a corner, which comes in and Son Heung-min fires towards goal only for Atletico striker Mario Mandzukic to clear.

The Spanish champions are in real trouble if they concede again - they'd need three.

Atletico Madrid win a free-kick as Omer Toprak clatters Mario Mandzukic from behind - looks like a final warning from the ref for the defender.

Koke takes the set-piece from 40 yards but it's straight into the hands of keeper Bernd Leno.

  99. Post update

  100. Post update

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 0-1)

As I say that, Bayer Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi has the first chance of the game, going for a dribble and having his 20-yard shot deflected wide for a corner.

The corner is headed clear and ends up back with Leverkusen's goalkeeper.

  101. Post update

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 0-1)

If Bayer Leverkusen score once tonight, Atletico will need three. So they face the dilemma of whether to hold onto the result that would take them through or put the tie almost beyond doubt.

They've not gone forward too much in the opening nine minutes, I have to say.

  102. Post update

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Agg 0-1)

    Arda Turan

No real pattern to this game so far. A corner to Atletico Madrid following a Bayer Leverkusen error. A huge roar from the Vicente Calderon crowd.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez is one of the five players to come in from the Espanyol stalemate at the weekend.

"It's a very important match and we have to give our all," he said. "They are the ones with the advantage.

"What we have to do is go out to win and score the first goal. Our aim is to qualify. And we know that we have to bring all we've got. It will be a nice match, we have to give our best version.

"The fans will be the 12th player. Despite that, the ball is what really counts and tomorrow we'll have to do the best we can."

Jose: I'm hoping a French team wins the Champions League this season. A Spanish team would just be too boring.

  114. 'Bayer is a very vertical team'

Atletico Madrid v Bayer Leverkusen (19:45 GMT)

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is ready for a lot of Jack Charlton-style football from the opposition tonight.

"Bayer is a very vertical team, which has little possession of the ball, is very direct in its plays and those are its best virtues as a team. It has great speed with the three players at the front and has a lot of forward game. We'll have to counter these situations which were hard for us to solve in the first time in Germany."

He has also called for "a Calderon that is always cheering us on to make us try harder to achieve a lot of things we have. I hope and wish there's not a silent moment at the Stadium".

After Atletico Madrid's heroics last season - if they'd won the Champions League it would have been a contender for the greatest club season ever - this season has been more difficult.

They are nine points off top in La Liga and in a battle with Valencia and Sevilla for two Champions League spots.

Was last season their one shot for major silverware? Or do you fancy them to challenge for this year's European Cup again?

Spanish football writer Andy West on Twitter

"Arda Turan, Koke and Cani: now there's a sexy midfield. And people think Atletico are all about aggression? Ooooozing quality.

"Really looking forward to the game. Expect a fast start from Atletico - they try to overwhelm opposition in the first few minutes of big home games."

    Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres, who is on the bench, is back to his goalshy self after a good start for Atletico where he scored twice against Real Madrid in a cup derby.

He has failed to score in nine La Liga games (to add to his one goal in 10 Serie A games for AC Milan), scoring three in four in the Copa del Rey. He didn't score in the first leg of this tie either.

    Bayer Leverkusen

Three weeks ago, Bayer Leverkusen won the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Hakan Calhanoglu scoring the only goal in Germany.

"We can live with this result," Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt understated after the game.

But opposite number Diego Simeone did not seem too concerned. "It could have been a worse result. But I am confident for the return leg. The outcome puts us in a good position."

Cast your mind back 296 days and Atletico Madrid - newly crowned Spanish champions - were 90 seconds away from becoming the king of Europe.

Sergio Ramos instead sent it to extra-time, which Real Madrid won 4-1.

Now they are in a battle to qualify for the Champions League rather than retain their title - and tonight they could be heading out of the Champions League.
