  1. Post update

While the people of Milan and the Rhone Valley dissect tonight's action long into the night, it is time for us to say farewell.

But don't worry, we will be back soon. Tuesday, in fact, when we have a Champions League bonanza as Barcelona host Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich entertain Porto. Join us then!

  2. Post update

    Lyon 2-2 St Etienne

    Andy Brassell

    European football expert

"Phew. What a derby. 2-2, so Lyon go back to top on goal diff (having played one more than PSG) but point poor reward for huge performance."

    Lyon 2-2 St Etienne

    French Ligue 1

All over in France's big match too. Lyon had 10 men for over an hour against neighbours St Etienne, but battled back to earn a point and move back to the top of Ligue 1.

Lyon led the Rhone Valley derby through Clinton N'Jie, before Lindsay Rose's sending-off for a deliberate handball allowed St Etienne to switch the match in their favour.

However, Christophe Jallet equalised shortly after the restart as Lyon leapfrogged reigning champions Paris St-Germain on goal difference.

  4. Around the Italian grounds

    Italian Serie A

Away from Milan, it has been a busy old day in the Italian top-flight. Third-placed Roma missed the chance to move back above capital rivals Lazio, when they could only muster a 1-1 home draw against fourth-bottom Atalanta.

    Sassuolo 1-1 Torino

    Chievo 1-1 Udinese

    Empoli 2-2 Parma

    Palermo 2-1 Genoa

    Roma 1-1 Atalanta

    Cagliari 0-3 Napoli

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

So what does this draw mean for the Serie A table? Very little. Milan stay in ninth position, while Inter are one place and one point behind them. Both sides need a big finish if they fancy a crack at Europa League football next season.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

This Derby del Madonnina won't go down as one of the finest, that's for sure. But there are still plenty of talking points for the people of Milan. Each side had a goal chalked off - rightly in my eyes but probably not in the eyes of the respective supporters...

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

All over! Rival Inter and Milan fans can face each other in the office tomorrow without losing too much face....

  9. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Inter work the ball into the Milan box as the Rossoneri defenders scamper back. However, the final ball is poor and it is meat and drink for away keeper Diego Lopez.

  10. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Another wasted set-piece. Inter clear at the near post as Milan look to be short in numbers at the back....

  11. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan fling the ball forward - if they nick a winner now there could be a riot from the Inter fans. Corner....

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Inter top scorer Mauro Icardi is allowed far too much room inside the Milan box, doing a few keepy-ups before fizzing a low shot across the face of goal. Four minutes of stoppage time for someone to nab a dramatic winner...

  13. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan enjoy a spell of possession in the Inter half, before the hosts nick back the ball and spring forward through Rodrigo Palacio. The ball breaks to Xherdan Shaquiri - known as the 'Alpine Messi' back in his native Switzerland (seriously) - but the Inter substitute cannot keep his rising shot down.

  14. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi was the kind of striker who would do nothing for 87 minutes, then pop up to convert a goal. Usually from inside the six-yard box. He barks out the orders from the touchline as his side are forced to defend again.

  15. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan's attacking intent has been limited in this second half. But they almost nick an unlikely lead on the break as substitute Mattia Destro sends a low shot scurrying towards the bottom corner. But it is comfortable for Inter keeper Samir Handanovic to gather.

Five minutes for someone, anyone, to become the toast of Milan. Can they do it?

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Ouch! Inter midfielder Hernanes crunches into a flying tackle on the halfway line - and sees yellow for his effort.

  17. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Time for another substitution - the fourth official is almost as busy as Milan keeper Diego Lopez. Italy forward Alessandro Cerci trots on in place of Andrea Poli for the Rossoneri.

  18. CLOSE!

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Still the Inter chances keep coming. Home full-back Danilo D'Ambrosio is the next to try his luck, launching a dipping shot towards the Milan goal. Away keeper Diego Lopez acrobatically flings himself towards his crossbar and is thankful to find out that the ball whistles over the roof of his goal.

  19. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

How are Inter not ahead? Milan keeper Diego Lopez makes a couple of smart stops in quick succession, palming out a high cross before blocking the follow up from the Nerazzurri. Not sure he knew much about that second save though!

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

And that Milan change prompts Inter boss Roberto Mancini to respond. Enter Xherdan Shaqiri - the Swiss winger comes on for Mateo Kovacic as Inter look to nab a winner. They have little under 15 minutes to do so.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

In the middle of that chaos, Milan decide to make an attacking switch. Italy forward Mattia Destro replaces Suso for the Rossoneri.

  22. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Absolute mayhem. Inter are going nuts about that decision. Right, here's a replay. Offside? No way near. A foul in the build-up? Appears so. Referee Luca Banti spots a tug by Inter forward Rodrigo Palacio on the shirt of Milan defender Luca Antonelli and awards the free-kick. What a spot! Great refereeing.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

The San Siro erupts as Milan defender Philippe Mexes comically hacks an attempted clearance into his own net, Hang on, it is not going to count. Why has the referee given this? The Nerazzurri fans - and boss Roberto Mancini - are baffled...

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Now it is Milan's time to make a change. However, this one is forced upon Rossoneri boss Pippo Inzaghi. Centre-back Alex is injured and is replaced by Gabriel Palletta.

  25. CLOSE!

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Another half chance for the home side. Gary Medel's penetrative pass sets up the Inter attack, with Rodrigo Palacio drilling in a low cross from the right towards the front post. Strike partner Mauro Icardi busts a gut to meet the ball, only to see Milan keeper Diego Lopez beat him to it.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Inter boss Roberto Mancini decides it is time to roll the tactical dice. He sacrifices 18-year-old midfielder Assane Gnoukouri - who has enjoyed a quietly effective debut - for Nigerian Joel Obi. Inter well on top - can they make the breakthrough soon?

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

    Luca Antonelli

Handball? Inter think so. The home players and fans are screaming for a spot-kick as Milan defender Luca Antonelli blocks - using his hand according to Inter - Hernanes's shot. Antonelli's hand was certainly outstretched. We have seen those given. That incident has livened up the locals...

  28. Post update

    Lyon 2-2 St Etienne

    French Ligue 1

Goals galore in the Rhone-Valley derby! Ten-men Lyon haul themselves back level as Christophe Jallet converts for the title-chasers.

  29. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

A goal is coming soon - I can feel it! And it nearly arrives when Rodrigo Palacio - who has been involved in the thick of the action in recent minutes - sees his goalbound shot blocked on the line by Milan defender Antonelli. Rossoneri keeper Diego Lopez flaps at a high cross to present that chance to the Argentine.

  30. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Still Inter dominate as Rodrigo Palacio chases down a loose ball and forces Milan skipper Ignazio Abate into conceding a corner. The set-piece, however, comes to nothing.

  31. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

The game has opened up a little, but clearcut chances are still less frequent than a rural bus service. Inter forward Mauro Icardi peels off the Milan defence in the left channel, but his lofted cross is too strong for Rodrigo Palacio to meet.

  32. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Rodrigo Palacio has been encouraged by that disallowed goal though, picking up the ball in his own half before tearing towards the back-pedalling Milan defence. However, Luca Antonelli breaks out from the line to stop the Argentine in his tracks. Great challenge.

  33. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Inter, like Milan in the first half, have the ball in the opposing net. And like Milan defender Philippe Mexes earlier, Inter forward Rodrigo Palacio turns to see the linesman's flag wafting in the cool Milan night air.

Team-mate Mauro Icardi is the guilty party, springing clear of the Milan defence too quickly before squaring to the Argentine. Offside.

  34. Post update

    Lyon 1-2 St Etienne

    French Ligue 1

    St Etienne

It's all change in France where St Etienne have now taken the lead at Lyon, whose title hopes may be about to take a hit.

The home side is down to 10 men and trail just before half-time with substitute Romain Hamouma rounding the goalkeeper to slot home his third goal of the season.

Michael Glasper: The Milan derby. Like two former brilliant heavyweight boxers, now long past their best, wheeled out for one last payday.

  36. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan, unlike the first half, start strongly as Giacomo Bonaventura drills a low shot just past Inter's right-hand post. Decent effort but it doesn't really have home keeper Samir Handanovic worried.

  37. KICK-OFF

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan's turn to start the second half - and that's what they do. Game on.

  38. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Inter re-emerge first out of the San Siro tunnel, with the Milan boys sauntering out at their leisure a few moments later. Ready for humdinger of a second half? It is going to happen people. Hopefully....

  39. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

We catch a glimpse of Inter legend Javier Zanetti, who is sat in the San Siro stands sharing a joke with former Nerazzurri owner Massimo Moratti. They seem to be happy anyway, despite a less than thrilling first half.

  43. Post update

    Lyon 1-0 St Etienne

    French Ligue 1

While we wait for a goal in Milan, two have already arrived over in France. Lyon looked to be heading back to the top of Ligue 1 after going 1-0 up against St Etienne in the Rhone Valley derby.

Cameroon international Clinton Njie bagged the opening goal, rifling in a low right-footed shot midway through the first half.

But that has already been cancelled out by St Etienne's ex-Leeds United winger Max Gradel. The Ivorian levels from the penalty spot after Lyon defender Lindsay Rose is adjudged to have handled a goal-bound shot with his arm - and is also shown a red card for his troubles.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Referee Luca Banti has seen enough - he toots his whistle to signal the end of the first half at the San Siro. Chances have been at a premium in the Milan derby, let's hope for more goalmouth action after the break...

  45. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Thankfully Poli appears to be OK, clambering to his feet with the help of the Milan medical staff. One minute of added time...

  46. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

We're only moments away from the half-time break, but the players have an early enforced break as Milan's Andrea Poli requires treatment. Poli falls heavily on his shoulder after competing for a high ball with Inter's Mateo Kovacic.

  47. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan keeper Diego Lopez has had enough of these turgid exchanges it seems. The Spaniard decides to liven up the Milan derby by attempting to take on Inter forward Rodrigo Palacio inside his own penalty area. The crowd holds its collective breath, Lopez keeps his nerve, and just about escapes his opponent to clear. Hairy stuff.

  48. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

All gone a bit scrappy in the San Siro. Neither side has created a golden chance to be honest. Where is a Ronaldo or Andriy Shevchenko when you need them?

  49. Post update

    Lyon 0-0 St Etienne

    French Ligue 1

Still goalless across the French Alps where second-placed Lyon entertain fifth-placed St Etienne in the Rhone-Valley derby. A home win will send Lyon above reigning champions Paris St-Germain to the top of Ligue 1.

Yusuf: The Milan derby used to be up there with the El Clasico! Real shame to see these sides struggling around mid table now.

KirrubanKrishnarajah: Sad to see the decline of the Milan derby, from being a star-studded tie with the world's best, to now being a mid-table clash.

  51. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan have shaded the possession stats in the last five minutes or so, however they are lacking a quality final ball to threaten the Nerazzurri. Two hopeful punts run harmlessly through to Inter keeper Samir Handanovic.

  52. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan have been boosted since that disallowed goal, pinging the ball around with more confidence and finding an extra spring in their step as they press Inter. Suso chases down Mateo Kovacic on the left flank, dispossessing the Croatian to the displeasure of the home fans.

We asked for your top five-a-side line-ups from a combined Milan side and Colin from Linlithgow reckons this one would take some beating: Toldo, Zanetti, Pirlo, Seedorf, Ronaldo.

Kiran doesn't appear to have picked any keepers?! Maybe Maldini and Lucio will play 'rush goalie'...

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan bundle the ball into the Inter net. But, wait! The linesman on the far side is holding his flag up. Milan defender Alex is the guilty party, adjudged to be offside before he heads back at the far post to Philippe Mexes, who pokes in from close range.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Here's a sight that Cardiff fans will remember very well - Gary Medel having a yellow card waved in his face by the referee. The now-Inter Milan midfielder hacks down a Milan opponent and concedes a free-kick in a dangerous position...

Oh dear. Inter midfielder Hernanes blazes that free-kick way over the Milan bar.

  57. Post update

Another half-chance for Inter, another important Philippe Mexes block. The Frenchman is throwing himself in front of everything at the moment! The Milan centre-half is perfectly positioned to cut out a low pull-back from the right byeline.

  59. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Milan enjoy a brief spell of possession around the halfway line, but then hand the ball back to Inter who press again. Home full-back Danilo D'Ambrosio crosses from the right, only to find the forehead of Milan defender Philippe Mexes.

  60. CLOSE!

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Now Milan are level in the' shots on target' stats. Spanish attacker Suso, who infamously had a less-than-glorious spell at Liverpool, thumps towards the Inter goal from a tight angle, forcing home keeper Samir Handanovic to beat clear.

  61. Post update

Inter have enjoyed a whopping 72% of possession in the opening 17 minutes, but only have a number one in the shots on target column. One more than Milan though...

  63. Post update

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Still all Inter Milan as Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic is the latest to go close for the home side. Milan respond with an attack of their own, but no-one is stood in the Inter six-yard box to convert a left-wing cross.

    French Ligue 1

Italy is not the only European country hosting a derby tonight. Over in France it's also derby night with Lyon taking on Rhone-Alpes rivals St Etienne.

And apart from the small matter of local pride, there's actually something riding on this with Lyon knowing a point would take them back above Paris-St Germain at the top of Ligue 1.

Fifth-placed St Etienne, who have travelled just the 30 miles, are looking for points to secure a place in next season's Europa League.

That match has just kicked off and we'll bring you any goal updates when we get them.

    Inter Milan 0-0 AC Milan

Ooof! The Inter Milan fans almost erupt in celebration as Hernanes spanks a 25-yard thunderbolt towards the top right corner of the Milan goal. But ageing Spanish keeper Diego Lopez defies his advancing years to leap across and tip the Brazilian midfielder's left-foot effort over the bar.

AC Milan are down in ninth place in the Serie A table. Inter Milan - who are nominally named as the 'home' side at their shared San Siro stadium tonight - are one spot further back.

So, whereas these fixtures used to centre around title battles, the 162nd Derby della Madonnina is only really about bragging rights.

Nobody wants to go into the office and face their work mates having been beaten by their closest rivals. Nobody wants to go to the local butchers and be ridiculed by the opponent-supporting, cleaver-wielding bloke behind the counter.

Nobody wants to be the boss who loses a derby. "The derby is always a big match," says Inter manager Roberto Mancini.

    Milan derby

It is time for a bit of honesty. The Milan derby is not quite what it is once was. There I've said it (although I'd imagine you all know that too).

Long gone are Ronaldo, Weah and Maldini - with the likes of Davide Santon, Guy Medel and Philippe Mexes instead donning the Nerazzurri and Rossoneri shirts. Not quite the same is it?

But don't let that put you off! Yes, the quality on the pitch has dropped. But try telling the Milanese people that this match doesn't matter....
