And that is that from us for the evening. Still to come is Brazil's opening match in the Copa America though - see you shortly for that one!

    Good night.

  2. Optimistic?

    Former England captain Gary Lineker

speaking on BBC Radio 5 live

"You have got to remember England are in a very easy qualifying group. But I'm optimistic about the future because there are a lot of young players coming through. I think gradually you'll see improvements, you'll see us come competitive again over the next five or 10 years. Next year might be a bit too soon because we have been a little bit in the dark for a while.

    England

"Anytime we have played anyone good we have been found wanting. But the signs are encouraging. The signs are good down the line."

  3. Post update

The teams are coming out of the tunnel around the rest of Europe.

    Here's tonight's late fixtures:

    Sweden v Montenegro

    Lithuania v Switzerland

    Belarus v Spain

    Slovakia v Macedonia

  4. 'Wilshere should play further forward'

    Slovenia 2-3 England

    Former England captain Gary Lineker

speaking on BBC Radio 5 live

"Jack Wilshere scored two breathtaking goals. I'm sure he hit the same square of the net on both occasions.

"There's never been any question marks in my mind about his talent. The only question has been his fitness. I like him going forward because he goes past players easily. The problem for Roy Hodgson is we don't seem to produce natural holding midfielders.

"Wilshere has shown he can play comfortably anywhere in midfield, but in an ideal world I'd like to see him play further forward."

  5. 'Wayne has been consistently excellent'

    Former England captain Gary Lineker

speaking on BBC Radio 5 live

"I'm pleased to be joined by Wayne Rooney on 48 goals. It seemed during a five-minute spell it might not happen when when struck two over the bar, but Wayne's been a consistently excellent player.

    Wayne ROoney
Image caption: Wayne Rooney and Gary Lineker have now both scored 48 goals for England

"I'm sure he will go on and surpass the great Sir Bobby Charlton. He's still only 29 and he's a formidable talent and he has a fabulous goalscoring record - especially in qualifiers."

Roger Curlett: Our 6th win against poor opponents - we shouldn't get carried away. When we play the big boys our mediocrity shines out.

Belete: Good in the middle and front, but very bad at the back. You can't leak goals like that if you want to win a major tournament!

Farah: People are extremely unfair. Rooney missed chances, all players do. But he kept going and scored the winner. Give him a break!

  7. Post update

    Slovenia 2-3 England

Who'd be an England manager he? In the space of 90 minutes he goes from clueless to genius and back again.

His squad, his team, for next summer's finals will take up a lot of column inches in the next 12 months.

Where does Jack Wilshere play? Who plays at the back? Does Harry Kane fit in? Daniel Sturridge? Danny Welbeck?

  8. Bad day for Fab

    Elsewhere in Europe

    Russia manager Fabio Capello

No wonder Fabio Capello looks a little animated. His Russia side lost 1-0 at home to Austria and now face a real battle to qualify automatically for Euro 2016.

Austria top Group G with 16 points from six games, with Sweden second on nine points from five games. Russia have eight points from six.

Russia's next game? Sweden at home on 5 September. Huge match...

  9. 'Not just any old goal!'

    Slovenia 2-3 England

England boss Roy Hodgson: "Not just any old goal from Jack Wilshere, they weren't exactly tap-ins! Both were fantastic and Jack took over the midfield in the second half. That was good to see.

    Jack Wilshere

"Jordan Henderson did very well at right-back, we were thinking that we would be limiting our options if we replaced Phil Jones with another defender. It was harsh on Nathaniel Clyne, he doesn't deserve that, but it was the best way to get Adam Lallana on.

"Luckily both moves worked out well, we dominated the game totally for long periods."

Lee: Hodgson criticism doesn't equal Hobson hate! He's winning matches in qualifying and against lower ranked teams but generally with poor performances. The bigger teams brush us aside. We have quality players and plenty of talent coming through but we need a top manager to realise these players' potential.

Steve in Kent: We'll cruise qualifying, and do nothing in France, just like always. A better team would have punished us.

Neil in Spain: The football has he same parallels as the English cricket team. Other teams have evolved and moved on, whereas England have been unable or unwilling to. The cricket team have started the revolution, football next?

  12. All but there

    Slovenia 2-3 England

    Group E

Next for England? Bottom of the table San Marino away on 5 September. England have almost booked their place at Euro 2016. Switzerland will move above Slovenia into second spot in Group C if they win away to Lithuania later (19:45 BST).

England midfielder Jack Wilshere: "It's obviously nice to get my first goals for England, they have been a long time coming. I probably wouldn't have had a shot for the second one if I hadn't already scored, but after I'd scored one I had more confidence.

"I have said that I need to score more goals, it is something I need to add to my game. Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes have done that for England."

I'm not sure if they have any genuine household names but they have two quality keepers in Samir Handanovic of Inter and Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, two midfielders from Fiorentina and Kevin Kampl who plays for Dortmund, while up front veteran Milivoje Novakovic has scored 29 international goals and will be a threat.

That England team selection has not gone down too well on social media - but then again no team selection ever has.

Phil Jones must bring something to the table at right-back. Extra height? He also has a habit of making superb faces when he concedes a goal.

Kevin D'Souza: Clyne not right-back?! A proper right-back compared to Jones who is... I have no idea what. Hodgson 'performance doesn't matter' Poor attitude.

Jack Cooper: Phil Jones ahead of Clyne at right back? Dear God Roy, what are you doing?

Christian Doak: Phil Jones ahead of Nathaniel Clyne? Raheem Sterling ahead of Theo Walcott? Nope, me neither

The consensus is that England have had two exciting games in the last 20 years.

When they beat Netherlands 4-1 in Euro 96, and when they beat Germany 5-1 in 2001.

Surely it's time for that to change?

BBC Sport chief football writer in Ljubljana

"Andros Townsend has become a trusted figure with Roy Hodgson's England set-up and he is back to face Slovenia - with Liverpool's unsettled Raheem Sterling also included.

"There is great expectation surrounding this game here in Ljubljana - but not a lot of optimism if the words of the locals are any measure."

We asked: What is the best England performance you can recall and when was the last time you were genuinely excited by the Three Lions?

Alex Tuck: Our 3-2 win against Sweden in the group stages of Euro 2012 was as exciting as it gets. Welbeck's backheel was the highlight.

Danny Cunningham: Best recent results for me were home win and away draw against Brazil in 2013. Shame it didn't help for the World Cup!

Richard Southworth: Strangely, the best quality football I remember England playing was when we lost to Italy and Uruguay at the World Cup!

Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne is on the bench for England so Roy Hodgson must just prefer Phil Jones there.

    Nope. Me neither...

  181. Waste of an afternoon?

    Slovenia v England (17:00 BST)

Yep, It was downright dismal in Dublin last week as England drew 0-0 with Republic of Ireland.

TV pundit Paul Scholes described it as "a waste of an afternoon" and, judging by reaction on social media, most people agreed with the former Manchester United midfielder.

The two teams managed just four shots on target between them in the end-of-season snoozefest at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

    Roy Hodgson

None of that today right Roy? Roy?

"These things do happen. Did I enjoy the game? No. Did I think we played well? No. Did the players? No."

Good. Glad we're all on the same page here.

"But it's one of 1,300 games for me and one of 600 for Wayne Rooney. We will benefit from that game. We probably needed it, a lot more than I realised perhaps."

    England
Image caption: I tried to find a photo of a chance from the game but none exist

It was, well, it was rubbish wasn't it? Utter drivel.

One of the worst 90 minutes of football I can recall seeing. And I have seen a lot of stuff in the lower reaches of the fourth division. I've seen Billy Turley play a season in goal. I've seen Ali Gibb play right-back. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.

But I've still rarely seen a worse game than Republic of Ireland 0-0 England...

Martin O'Donnell: Best England performance against Holland, Euro 96. What a game, out passed and out played the pass masters.

Benjamin Sorvel: The last time I was genuinely off my seat watching England was against Italy in the Euros on penalties.

  184. Unbeatables?

    Slovenia v England (17:00 BST)

Finishing the season unbeaten would be a "great achievement" for England after last year's disappointing World Cup exit, says captain Wayne Rooney.

Roy Hodgson's side have won seven and drawn two in 2014-15.

"It will be great for us after the World Cup," said Rooney, 29. "Now we need to finish off with a win."

"A season unbeaten has got to be worth something," added Hodgson.
