    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Danny Wilson, former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

  6. Player reaction

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis, speaking to Sky Sports: "There's definitely a sense of disappointment. It's a bit of a missed opportunity but it's still a good point. Overall it was a good performance by us but we're just disappointed we couldn't win the game."

  7. Elsewhere in Europe

    Faroe Islands versus Greece

A famous win for Faroe Islands as they complete the double over Greece in this qualification group. They won 2-1 to overtake Finland into fourth place in Group F. They are within five points of the play-off place now...

Germany hammered Gibraltar 7-0 in Group D and in I, Denmark beat Serbia 2-0.

  8. Next?

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Northern Ireland have three months to recharge their batteries before the final push. Next up? The Faroe Islands away on 4 September. It could be harder than some people think judging by their result tonight.

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Lafferty asks what it all means...

So, what does this result do to the Group F table with four games remaining?

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

A small pocket of Romania fans making all the noise in the closing moments.

  13. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Michael O'Neill has not given up. The ball runs out of play near the Northern Ireland dug out and the home manager goes out of his way to make sure he gets to it first and throw it to a green shirt. One last chance for the hosts?

  14. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Three minutes of added time.

  15. Elsewhere in Europe

Nervy end in the Faroe Islands as Sokratis Papastathopoulos pulls one back for Greece with an 84th-minute header. That's 2-1 now.

Meanwhile, Germany now lead Gibraltar 7-0 with Max Kruse scoring his second.

And Jakob Poulsen has put Denmark 2-0 up against Serbia.

  16. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

It's all Northern Ireland in the closing stages.

Oliver Norwood fires a free-kick towards the net but Ciprian Tatarusanu tips it over at the last moment. Two minutes of normal time remaining.

Anyone in green fancy becoming a hero?

  17. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Lafferty missed a good chance

    No, no, no.

Kyle Lafferty. This is your moment. Your moment to put your name up in lights.

He's totally unmarked eight yards out when the ball lands at his feet. Surely a goal? He snatches at it and the relieved Romania keeper saves comfortably in the end.

  18. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Northern Ireland are going for it. Great ball out wide by Stuart Dallas finds Oliver Norwood who whips in a delicious cross but Kyle Laffery cannot make proper contact. The ball falls to Chris Baird 12 yards out but it's straight at the keeper.

  19. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Jonny Evans coming off is a major blow for Northern Ireland. He has been outstaying. Craig Cathcart is a great defender but the quality of Evans gives you confidence at the back."

  20. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Ten minutes of normal time remaining. Late drama, anyone?

  21. SUBSTITUTION

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Jonny Evans has gone off injured

There's something happening on the sidelines. A steward is down receiving treatment after an incident. Hopefully it is nothing serious. Jamie Ward is replaced Corry Evans while Jonny Evans hobbles off to be replaced by Craig Cathcart.

  22. Elsewhere in Europe

The Faroe Islands look like they will complete the double over 2004 European champions Greece. Teenager Brandur Olsen has made it 2-0 as the Nordic minnows look set to move up to fourth in Northern Ireland's group - above Finland.

While we're chatting about those rocky islands, have a read of our feature about the foreign players who play their club football in the Faroes.

  23. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

The Green and White Army is in full cry. They are trying to rally their side. Romania have started running down the clock. Jonny Evans is clearly in discomfort. A change coming up?

  24. Elsewhere in Europe

    Bellarabi scores for Germany

Germany are now 6-0 up against Gibraltar. Karim Bellarabi made it four before Andre Schurrle got his second and third of the night. They were frustrated in the first half but are totally dominant now.

  25. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Twenty minutes remaining. Northern Ireland have lost their way. Their next match is the Faroe Islands away so a draw against the group leaders will not be a disaster.

  26. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"There is a bit more space for players and both team a showing more adventure, the full-backs are getting forward and the teams can sense they can get a result and not just a 0-0."

  27. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Slip by Gareth McAuley and Gabriel Torje is storming towards the goal. Surely this is the breakthrough? Jonny Evans, using all his experience, keeps a cool head and manages to deflect the midfielder's shot just wide. The hosts breathe a huge sight of relief.

  28. SUBSTITUTION

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Chipciuin has been taken off

First change of the match...and it's the visitors who want to mix things up. Midfielder Alexandru Chipciu is off and on comes striker Bogdan Stancu.

  29. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Maxim tumbles for Romania

Shocking! Alexandru Maxim tries to con the referee into a penalty after going down theatrically inside the area but the Spanish official is having none of it. Jonny Evans and Oliver Norwood are furious. They want the Romanian booked but he escapes with a lecture.

  30. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

How costly will that prove? A delicious cross is played into the Romania box and up goes Kyle Lafferty. It's a great chance for Northern Ireland's danger man, six yards out, but he gets his angles all wrong and heads horribly over. Groans from the home crowd.

  31. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Laszlo Sepsi

The late evening sun is playing havoc. Passes are going astray. Romania are being restricted to long range efforts but they're finding the going tough as the wind whips up.

  32. Elsewhere in Europe

Any hope that Gibraltar had against Germany is surely gone now as Mesut Ozil squares for Max Kruse to tap home into an empty net early in the second half. That's 2-0. And you fancy there'll be a few more goals now...

    And yep, there's Ilkay Gundogan - 3-0.

  33. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"More adventure being shown. The Northern Ireland players are getting forward, putting pressure on the Romanian defence and that could lead to goals. The Romanian midfielders are nowhere near tight enough."

  34. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Green shirts snapping at Romanian heels, tackles flying in...blood and thunder stuff at Windsor Park.

  35. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Another super strike by Stuart Dallas whistles narrowly wide. The 24-year-old Brentford player is a relative newcomer to the international stage but he looks decent. Northern Ireland have the momentum.

  36. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Michael O'Neill

No changes by Michael O'Neill at the interval. But how long will he leave it? One thing going for Northern Ireland in this half - they're got the wind in their favour.

  37. KICK-OFF

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Huge 45 minutes coming up for Northern Ireland. Back under way in Belfast.

  38. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Northern Ireland started the day with a four-point cushion over Hungary in the race for automatic qualification to Euro 2016. Right now, their lead is down to two points in the 'as it stands' table after Hungary defeated Finland earlier.

Mohamed Arabi: Germany are playing against best goalkeeper in the world.

John Dykes: Jordan Perez had saved a penalty and made two or three top top saves in the first half!

Cam Baxter: From Euro 2004 winners to Faroe Islands fodder, Greece everyone.

  40. Elsewhere in Europe

    Gibraltar

Phenomenal performance from Jordan Perez in the first half of Gibraltar v Germany to keep the minnows in the game.

The 28-year-old domestic-based goalkeeper saved a penalty from Bastian Schweinsteiger and pulled off some brilliant saves towards the end of the first half.

Andre Schurrle has scored the only goal in the Algarve so far.

Faroe Islands lead Greece 1-0 at the break, as do Denmark against Serbia. The Danes could have doubled their lead but Daniel Agger missed a penalty.

  41. "A set piece might win it"

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"You have to be very cautious against teams at this level. The Romanians are very talented and technical players who can catch you on the counter.

"Northern Ireland have been cautious all qualifying and that is unlikely to change unless they lose a goal. A set piece might be the difference today. They are in the game and playing against a quality team."

  42. HALF-TIME

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

This game has come alive in the closing stages of the half. Chances at both ends but it's tight and tense between Group F's top two teams.

  43. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    So close!

Northern Ireland are hammering on the door. A corner is whipped into the Romania area and Jonny Evans directs a powerful header towards a net.

It's heading for the top corner before Ciprian Tatarusanu sticks out a hand to deflect it over the bar.

One minute of added time at the end of the first half.

  44. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Lafferty

Great response from Northern Ireland. No surprise their most dangerous threat is Kyle Lafferty, the former Burnley striker seeing another attempt deflected behind for a corner.

But what's this? The referee awards a goal kick. He must be the only person inside Windsor Park who didn't see that come off a yellow shirt.

Moments later Stuart Dallas hammers the ball against the woodwork but it wouldn't have counted as the referee spotted a handball.

  45. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Gabriel Torje has been Romania's biggest threat. He runs the ball and commits defenders. Torje has shown really good adventure so far."

  46. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

A spell of Romania pressure in the closing stages of the half. The Group F leaders are playing some decent one touch stuff.

Matt Rhodes: Come on Faroe Islands!

  48. Elsewhere in Europe

Faroe Islands stunned Greece with a 1-0 win when they played in November... and they're doing it again!

Hallur Hansson, once of Aberdeen, has put them ahead. If it stays like that it would take them above Finland into fourth spot in Northern Ireland's group.

  49. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Action from NI versus Romania

An awful long way to go in this one but already there is a feeling one goal might settle this. There will be one heck of a party in Belfast later if it goes in the opposition net.

  50. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Great chance for Steaua Bucharest midfielder Alexandru Chipciu as the home defence is caught napping. But it's a tame finish and Michael McGovern, who has been solid on his competitive debut, gathers comfortably.

  51. Elsewhere in Europe

    Gibraltar 0-1 Germany

The dream is over in the Algarve. Gibraltar held on for 27 minutes but Andre Schurrle has given world champions Germany the lead after a defensive error.

Moments later Bristol Rovers' Jake Gosling almost equalises but his effort from close range is straight at Roman Weidenfeller.

  52. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Shocking challenge by Mihai Pintilii on Conor McLaughlin. The Romania midfielder actually comes off worse but that does not stop the referee from showing him a yellow card when he eventually climbs to his feet. This game has been peppered with some meaty challenges from both sets of players.

  53. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"When a ball just drifted into the back of the Romanian defence, one player really runs it down and puts pressure on the opposition. The determination is there to be seen. That is why they have been so effective as a team."

  54. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Few chances so far. But Northern Ireland's commitment cannot be faulted.

  55. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Northern Ireland fans

Terrific atmosphere. Northern Ireland fans are putting the new stand at Windsor Park to the ultimate test. Hundreds of green shirts are doing a West Brom-style 'Boing Boing' while urging their team forward.

  56. Elsewhere in Europe

In Group I, Denmark lead Serbia 1-0 through Yussuf Poulsen. Denmark are in second, five points behind Portugal, while Serbia only have one point after a three-point deduction for trouble earlier in the campaign.

  57. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Gareth McAuley made a lunging tackle at Gabriel Torje in the box who stayed on his feet. That was a very dangerous tackle to commit. He was fortunate to get away with that one."

  58. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Anxious scenes in the home dug out as Gabriel Torje is allowed to run unchallenged into the Northern Ireland penalty area. But the midfielder takes one too many touches and is forced to pass to a team-mate who blazes horribly over.

  59. Elsewhere in Europe

    Gibraltar 0-0 Germany

    Germany miss

Scenes in the Algarve, temporary home of Gibraltar. The minnows, who have let in 27 goals in five qualifiers so far, concede a penalty to world champions Germany.

Bastian Schweinsteiger steps up but keeper Jordan Perez, who had a trial with Wycombe earlier this year, guesses right to keep it out.

  60. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Lafferty had a chance for Northern Ireland

Chance for unmarked Kyle Lafferty as the ball lands at his feet 25 yards out but he snatches at the shot and it's an easy save.

  61. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

It might by a huge match for Northern Ireland but no sign of nerves from the Green and White Army. A corner by Oliver Norwood finds Chris Brunt but the West Brom man's goal-bound volley strikes a yellow shirt.

  62. David versus Goliath

    Gibraltar 0-0 Germany

    Adam Priestley

You remember in the early rounds of the FA Cup, where you get tales of teachers and builders taking on the professionals? Well it is like that with Gibraltar versus Germany tonight.

Adam Priestley, a teacher at a school in West Yorkshire, starts as the lone striker against the world champions. He had to get permission for time off school to play as well.

Nick Bruzon: It's not just about Northern Ireland tonight. Could Gibraltar cause THE upset at home to Germany?

Northern Ireland fans making a din

There's only 10,000 inside Windsor Park because of rebuilding work but those fortunate to get hold of a ticket are making a real din. The noise levels rise further as the hosts win a corner.

  65. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

A mistake by Laszlo Sepsi and Kyle Lafferty is rampaging forward. The Norwich striker sprints into the Romania area and he is about the pull the trigger... when he clips himself and tumbles to the ground. Northern Ireland will hope that's not a sign of things to come.

  66. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"A little bit of a cagey start from both teams. There is a lot of traffic in the middle of the park and neither side are committing men forward too much."

  67. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

The sun's out but it's a blustery night in Belfast. It's not helping the hosts. They've yet to settle and it's the yellow-shirted visitors who are threatening an early breakthrough.

  68. Post update

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Early free-kick to Romania 35 yards out and number 13 Claudio Keseru is going to have a crack. Up he steps... and it whistles narrowly wide of Michael McGovern's post.

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Danny Wilson

Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

"Michael O'Neill should get a lot of credit for this. He has given the team belief. They are not blessed with big names as a lot of them are from the lower leagues. They have done brilliantly so far in qualifying and this is their most important game for many years."

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie: "Northern Ireland are full of confidence at the moment and in a position that we could not have envisaged. It would not be the be all or end all if the result did not go our way against Romania. If they don't qualify, it will be something they regret for the rest of their lives."

  74. Lucky 13?

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Romania forward Claudiu Keseru

The number 13 is unlucky for many but Romania forward Claudiu Keseru is hoping it proves lucky for his country in Belfast. "We play on 13 June, we have 13 points and my lucky shirt number is 13. Go Romania," he announced on his Facebook page.

  75. From Chasing Cars to chasing footballs

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Gary Lightbody

He's made a fortune from the single "Chasing Cars" but Snow Patrol lead singer Gary Lightbody was chasing footballs this week after fulfilling a boyhood dream by training with the Northern Ireland squad.

"I got to play at Windsor Park with a Northern Ireland top on and the kick a ball about with the lads," Lightbody told BBC Sport. "It's something I have dreamed about since I was a boy.

"I still have a dream of playing for Northern Ireland. But people don't need to worry...there's no chance I'm going to get a game! The Romania game is my birthday night out. I'm 39 on Monday."

After training, Lightbody played impromptu gig for the team. Now that's a pretty cool way of preparing for a big match.

Watch the full interview with Gary Lighbody on the BBC Sport website.

  76. "McGovern has done well"

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie on keeper Michael McGovern: "It is going to be difficult. When you are making your competitive debut, there is a lot of scrutiny, especially as a goalkeeper. Michael McGovern has done well in his three friendlies but was the obvious choice when Roy Carroll was not going to be fit. The back four are very settled and protect him well."

  77. "We've got to keep momentum going"

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Michael O'Neill

What an incredible turnaround by Michael O'Neill. Under his watch, Northern Ireland plummeted to 129th in Fifa's rankings in September 2012. Now they are within reach of their first major tournament since the 1986 Mexico World Cup.

O'Neill, however, is keen to play down tonight's game.

"I don't see this game as being any more significant than the game against Finland in March," he said. "We got off to a good start in the campaign and we've kept that momentum going."

  78. Post update

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

BBC Sport's Joel Taggart: Only previous time Northern Ireland played Romania in a competitive game in Belfast the match was played in front of a new stand and NI won 3-2.

  79. Windsor Park's new look

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Windsor Park

Work has been going on round the clock to get Windsor Park ready after the West Stand was demolished when cracks were spotted following the Euro qualifier win over Finland in March.

All 10,000 available tickets have been sold with nearly 4,000 seats put into the new East Stand and the South stand over the past few weeks.

  80. Post update

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Northern Ireland v Romania

Former Hull City and Northern Ireland winger Stuart Elliott: Let's be sure to stand up for the Ulster men tonight. Wishing the boys all the best.

Former Newcastle and Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie: Hopefully another memorable night ahead.

  81. Stat attack

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

Here's a statistic to warm Northern Ireland hearts ahead of what promises to be a nail-biting 90 minutes in Belfast.

The last time they qualified for a major tournament - the 1986 World Cup - they defeated Romania twice on the way to Mexico.

Norman Whiteside and Martin O'Neill were among the scorers in a 3-2 win in Belfast before Jimmy Quinn netted the only goal in Bucharest.

  82. Spurs defender starts for Romania

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Northern Ireland v Romania

Romania are 12th in Fifa's rankings - 32 places above Northern Ireland.

While Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon has been ruled out with a knee injury, Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches does start. The 25-year-old, who cost £8.5m from Steaua Bucharest in August 2013, saw his season at Spurs curtailed by a red card at Stoke on 9 May.

  83. Big night for McGovern

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Michael McGovern

What a huge night for 30-year-old goalkeeper Michael McGovern.

Roy Carroll has played every minute of Michael O'Neill's 15 competitive fixtures as Northern Ireland boss.

But the 37-year-old former Manchester United player has been ruled out due to abdominal pain leaving Hamilton keeper McGovern to start his first competitive game for his country.

This was supposed to be the most tedious qualification process international football has ever cooked up: 53 European nations reduced to 24 finalists. But there is a welcome sense of anticipation in the air with Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and the Republic of Ireland all in with a chance of making it to Euro 2016.

  85. Elsewhere in Group F

    Finland 0-1 Hungary

    Table

Belfast isn't the only city hosting a crucial Group F match today. The full-time whistle has just been blown between Finland and Hungary and there was a big goal in the latter stages - which isn't great news for Northern Ireland.

Hungary nicked a 1-0 win thanks to a rasping half-volley from Zoltan Stieber (who was once on the books of Aston Villa).

And that means they are now just a point behind Michael O'Neill's side. That won't help the pre-match nerves inside the home dressing room at Windsor Park....

  87. Five star Lafferty

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Kyle Lafferty

He ended last season in Turkey on loan at Rizespor after falling out of favour at Norwich City, but Kyle Lafferty cannot stop scoring for Northern Ireland.

The former Burnley and Rangers striker has scored five of his country's eight goals in qualifying, including two against Finland on 29 March.

  88. Lafferty's wedding headache

Northern Ireland v Romania (19:45 BST)

    Kyle Lafferty

Kyle Lafferty had no idea Northern Ireland would be knocking on the door of Euro 2016 when he set a date for his wedding to fiancee Vanessa Chung.

The 27-year-old striker, who has been in terrific goalscoring form for his country during the first half of the qualifying campaign, had earmarked a June 2016 date for their big day.

But with Northern Ireland on course to qualify for next summer's tournament, which starts on 10 June, Lafferty has been forced into a rethink.

"To be thinking the wedding can't be on this day because we could be in France with my country playing in the finals is a good feeling," he told Sky Sports. "My fiancee has been absolutely fantastic. She doesn't want me to have any regrets."

  89. Looking to go top

Northern Ireland fan puts up a banner at Windsor Park

Northern Ireland start second in the Group F table but victory in Belfast will see them leapfrog leaders Romania with four games to play.

With the top two teams qualifying automatically, no wonder Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty is on the brink of rescheduling his wedding which is due to take place smack bang in the middle of Euro 2016.

There is, of course, still a long way to go but even if Northern Ireland finish third in the table they will enter the play-offs. However, the best third-placed team (with results against the sixth-placed team discarded) directly qualify to the finals.
