We're off shortly, but don't go too far. I'll be back in a couple of hours for live text commentary of Brazil v Venezuela in the Copa America. A big game for both sides.

  6. Manager reaction

    Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BT Sport: "It needed that to get the points on the board but we played better against Portugal. We held our nerve and showed resilience. We told the players it might take 70 minutes and it took longer than that. We deserved the win because of the control we had over it.

"We looked a bit leggy and the pitch was slow so that meant the ball was sticky but we needed to shift the ball more quickly to unsettle them. Reuben gave us an injection of pace from midfield, he and Jesse had a great impact.

    "It's in our hands now."

  7. Get Involved

I agree, Khaled. Very, very impressed with young Reuben.

  8. Player reaction

    Patrik Carlgren

Sweden striker John Guidetti, speaking to BT Sport: "It feels like we did all that running for nothing. If you make mistakes at this level, you get punished. We did great for 85 minutes but we lost focus and with England's quality it was boom, game over. For 85 minutes, everything was perfect. We could have nicked it but our gameplan was that one point was good enough. We have overcome some crazy things with this team so we never give up."

    Was it a volley?

Richard Fidler: Of course it is a volley - how else would you describe it? And don't anyone say half-volley, because that's totally different.

  12. Player reaction

    Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

    Jesse Lingard

England goalscorer Jesse Lingard, speaking to BT Sport: "The lads worked hard today, we knew we needed a win. We had the team spirit and heart to win the game and we showed we can grind games out. It came straight into my mind to shoot and luckily it went in. The goal killed them and then we saw the game out."

"Just forget the pretty football, just get the result. It does not mask that England played so much better against Portugal and tonight against a very average Swedish side, they were poor.

"England have a way of playing which is fine but when chasing the game, they have too many touches in the wrong areas - they need to get the ball in wider areas quicker so they can make things happen. I would say they are working too hard on retaining possession."

  17. How it stands

Those group tables look a lot better. Italy and Portugal play later this evening, in about 50 minutes' time.

BBC Radio 5 live in the Czech Republic

"First thing first, they have got the all important three points but they have got away with it a bit.

"It was a goal of class but it was one of few classy moments England produced. England never really got to grips with what they had to do, but they managed to win and Wednesday, when they play agains, is another day."

  19. Post update

    Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

It wasn't pretty though, was it? Quick question for those watching the game on television - was Jesse Lingard's goal a volley? The jury is out in the BBC Sport office. Some think because the ball bounced before it got to him it wasn't. Others, like me, think the chest-down made it a volley. Answers on a postcard.

  29. GOAL

    Sweden U21 0-1 England U21 - Jesse Lingard

    Jesse Lingard

England finally have lift-off. A corner, won when Redmond's shot was turned round the post, is cleared but only as far as Jesse Lingard who drives a powerful shot into the back of the net from the edge of the area. Relief.

One of the few players to escape any criticism tonight must surely be Carl Jenkinson. Again the full-back gets forward and puts in a decent cross but there's nobody in the box to do anything about it. Generally, the Arsenal's man delivery has been decent.

Christian Day: There needs to be a post Mortem in to this u21 campaign just as soon as we get knocked out at the group stages. One paced, one dimensional and desperately crying out for the class we left at home because they are "too good" for the u21's.

Harry Kane bursts into life, linking play with Jesse Lingard and then laying the ball off to Carl Jenkinson who fires into the side netting from six yards out. The problem is... Consequently, Chalobah and Hughes are both dropping back to take the ball from the centre-backs and that opens the pitch up."

Sweden are letting England have the ball early on, just sitting back and admiring the passing of their opposition. England coach Gareth Southgate: "We are always focused on winning every match, we feel we have the set-up to do that and control the game. The last couple of days have been really good preparation for us.

"Sweden are quite direct and good at picking up second balls, they are like an old style English team, and they clearly have good heart.

"We know that if we win the game we can be top of the group ahead of the match between Italy and Portugal. There is not much motivation needed - we know we need to win this game. We feel controlling the central area of the field is central to that."

During the course of him slagging off England, FC Copenhagen left-back Ludwig Augustinsson, who has won two senior caps for his country, told the media in his homeland: "Some players go for such sick amounts of money in England. We'll see how good they are."

He arrived from England last night and is expected to stay for the match against Italy on Wednesday. FA chairman Greg Dyke (above) and Hodgson's assistant coach Ray Lewington have also been out here in the Czech Republic. 137. In a much better place

    Sweden U21 v England U21 (17:00 BST)

    Jack Butland

Goalkeeper Jack Butland reckons England are far better placed than two years ago to progress to the semi-finals and beyond.

The Under-21s have not won at the finals for six years and last time out returned home from Israel without so much as a point, having lost to Italy, Norway and the hosts.

"This is different because we put in a performance," the captain said of the Portugal loss. "In the first group game two years ago, that wasn't the case. We should have got something from the Portugal game. We didn't deserve to beat Italy.

"We are not ashamed to have lost like that. It hurts, of course it does, but we didn't lose in an embarrassing way. We were in the game for 90 minutes. We could have quite easily got something."

"Lads, lads... have you seen that newspaper cutting on the wall?"

    "What's a newspaper?"

While I bemoan the slow, steady death of news in print let me tell you the real reason for this entry - England pinned an article up in their team digs because a Sweden player labelled them "overrated".

Norwich winger Nathan Redmond said: "We came down for lunch and we saw it posted up. The lads were having a look as we walked in. It was a good topic for discussion at the dinner table."

And drive for all of 30 seconds, around the corner to bring them to the stadium. Madness."

"I thought England played quite well against Portugal - I've seen all eight sides in this competition and Portugal are by far and away the best team.

"I've seen Sweden and Italy - England look much better than both of those teams. To be honest, Sweden and Italy look to be at the level of England's qualifying opponents - and not at the level of England or Portugal.

"While England are defeated and that causes them a problem, I don't think they have too many things to work on or have to change too much in order to try and get themselves out of this group."

  143. The story so far

    Sweden U21 v England U21 (17:00 BST)

    England U21s

England were rather unlucky to lose in their first game. They were beaten 1-0 by a more than decent Portugal team, who somehow managed to keep a clean sheet despite the young Lions having 19 pops at goals.

Sweden won their opener, against Italy, so it's going to be no stroll in the park for Southgate's lot.

There are, though, plenty of England fans here too on the streets outside the stadium. Should be a fantastic atmosphere.

    Harry Kane

Tonight it's the turn of Gareth Southgate's Under-21s to show the Continent what they can do. Are we right to think Harry Kane and the gang are some of the best prospects in Europe?

Win tonight and glory is still a distinct possibility. Lose and they're more than likely to be heading home with their wings clipped.

    Bring on Sweden.

  148. All hail the summer

    Sunset

    The summer's great, isn't it?

Long, drawn-out nights, barbecues with friends, drinks after work and, better than anything else, there's invariably tournament football.

And this summer could be extra special.

The men's England team are unbeaten in qualifying since Roy Hodgson first discovered aviators - or something like that - while the women's team are plotting a course to World Cup glory.

The cricketers are suddenly good at the one-day stuff and are looking in good shape to get stuck into the Aussies.

All it needs now is the Under-21 footballers to start winning in the Czech Republic and it could be a golden summer.
