    Olivier Giroud

    Thanks for your company.

Plenty more action this week, as well as all the latest grunts and groans from the transfer rumour machine.

You now where to come for the latest.

    Bye for now.

  2. Match stats

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

    Match stats

34% is the lowest possession stat is the lowest Liverpool have recorded in the Premier League under Brendan Rodgers.

That is far from their worst result though.

  3. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

More from Arsene Wenger on BBC Sport : "We scored a regular goal that was disallowed, I don't believe I can do something about it. At the end of the day the referee cancelled out a regular goal. Like it or don't like it, it is a fact.

"We had chances bit we couldn't finish them off. When you play at home and don't win, people always find problems.

"It is not the result or the complete performance but we came back in the second half.

"If you are not first, you play catch up, there are 19 times who play catch up."

  4. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

    Arsene Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on Sky Sports: "Liverpool had some chances in the first half and nothing in the second. We had chances in both halves and were unlucky because we scored a regular goal that was ruled out and that was very difficult to understand.

"We were insecure at the back because we had a new defence but second half we were more stable.

"We played quite well in the first half, we had chances, enough chances to win the game. Liverpool cannot complain with the decision, not on Monday, not today.

"You have to give credit to Liverpool, they worked very hard defensively. We want to score goals, we had a lot of possession but if you cannot finish and a team plays deep, we struggled to score. This is the second time at home and we are not used to that.

"We know we can score goals but we need to play what we do better in the final third."

Next up for Arsenal is a visit to Newcastle on Saturday lunchtime.

Liverpool entertain West Ham at 15:00 BST on the same day.

  7. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

More from Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on BBC Sport:  "I thought we were very good. First half Petr Cech was the man of the match.

"Second half we were always a threat going forward. The players worked ever so hard."

  8. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

    Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on Sky Sports: ""I thought we were outstanding, we showed everything. You heard Petr Cech getting a round of appluase for the saves he made.

"Overall we kept a good clean sheet but disappointed we didn't win. It is about keeping really well organised.

"Both goalkeepers made good saves. A really good clean sheet against a top team.

"We saw how our team is growing. Nothing to add on any transfers."

  9. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers has just appeared in front of the cameras and, as you might expect, he is accentuating the positives.

A "real focus", "strong", an "attacking threat".

He is asked if Mario Balotelli has finalised a loan back to AC Milan. He keeps a poker face as he stonewalls the question, but he looks like a man relieved that he won't have to answer questions about the man much longer.

  10. Player reaction

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

    Petr Cech

Arsenal keeper Petr Cech speaking to Sky Sports: "When you start with your first game at a new club and everything goes wrong you have to go back to work and bounce back.

"This was one of those game where I was in the right place at the right time. It is hard to believe after all the chances in the game that it finished 0-0.

"With Christian Benteke's effort, Gabriel tried to intercept the ball and I have to wait and get there fast after the shot.

"The positive thing out of this game is the number of chances we created in the second half. We made plenty of errors in the first half."

    That might be that...

  19. CLOSE!

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Javier Moreno, fresh off the bench, storms forwards. It's three on two. Give it!

Greedy. The Spaniard goes it alone and is robbed by an under-staffed Arsenal defence.

  20. Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

The Liverpool fans start a chorus of You'll Never Walk Alone.

They believe that their team might have done enough for a point. They might be right. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain's pass to Nacho Monreal is hopelessly over-hit.

    Five to go.

  28. SUBSTITUTION

  29. GREAT SAVE!

  31. Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho's twinkle toes take him jinking into the penalty area, before he puts a size nine through the back of the ball. It is straight at Petr Cech, but that was a warning to Arsenal that Liverpool still have the talent to snatch something out of nothing.

  32. YELLOW CARD

    Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Joe Gomez has his name taken after tugging Aaron Ramsey's shirt. He had been done up like a kipper by the Welshman's backheel and was caught the wrong side.

A good tactical yellow to take from Liverpool's point of view.

    Aaron Ramsey and Joe Gomez
  33. Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool earn a corner as Francis Coquelin turns a Philippe Coutinho cross behind.

Plenty of height with the likes of Benteke, Can and Skrtel up to compete for it, but Arsenal clear.

Another minute chewed up and spat out by the visitors though.

Simon Mignolet is across well to pluck it out of the air.

  39. Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

"Arsenal at last spending some time on the ball and some of the frantic air of their play from the first half has disappeared - at least for now.

Alexis Sanchez! Has to be! Isn't.

Simon Mignolet chats to the referee

A few spoiling tactics from Liverpool as goalkeeper Simon Mignolet 'mis-controls' the ball returned to him for a goal-kick by a ball-boy.

Michael Oliver warns him, but keeps yellow under wraps.

  53. Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

More promising signs for Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez is at the centre of it all.

His cut-back is pinpoint, Philippe Coutinho's shot is firm, but it thuds off the underside of the bar and away past a beaten Petr Cech.

Benteke wasted a good opening moments before stubbing a shot wide after good work from Emre Can.

Arsene Wenger rarely does out-right rage, but simmering grudges and resentment? That's far more his style.

Asked about Liverpool's Raheem Sterling moving to Manchester City in the summer, the Frenchman - who has complained about "financial doping" in the past and seen Kolo Toure, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy make similar moves - was not about to express outrage on the Reds' behalf.

"They refused to sell us Luis Suarez, so I cannot feel too much sympathy. Liverpool are in a position that they can make their own decisions," he said.

    Mesut Ozil

Was there ever as 'Arsenal' a player as Mesut Ozil?

That is what the critics were asking this time last year. A gossamer touch, a showy jink, but too often too little end product. Especially in the biggest games.

The German international has looked the part this season though. He misplaced just one of his 55 passes in the Gunners' win over Crystal Palace last time out.

Judging from Brendan Rodgers' pre-match press conference last week, Liverpool's focus will be on keeping a third successive clean sheet of the season and avoiding a repeat of April's 4-1 wipeout in north London.

Anything more will be a bonus.

"We know that we've got that ability to scrap and fight as well as play good football," he said.

"If you assess Arsenal's last 10 games they've lost at home, the teams that have won have averaged four shots on target, with 43% possession.

"It tells you that you can go there and you don't need to dominate the ball, but you can dominate the space."

    This does not sound pretty.

Arsenal make two changes from the team which beat Crystal Palace as defenders Gabriel and Calum Chambers come in for centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Mertesacker is ill and Koscielny has a back injury.

Arsenal XI: Cech, Bellerín, Gabriel, Chambers, Monreal, Coquelin, Cazorla, Ramsey, Ozil, Sanchez, Giroud

Liverpool give playmaker Roberto Firmino his first start as part of three changes. Midfielders Emre Can and Lucas Leiva also start as Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana, who are injured, miss out along with the benched Jordan Ibe.

Liverppol XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Gomez, Milner, Can, Lucas, Firmino, Coutinho, Benteke

    Martin Skrtel scores for Liverpool

So will there be some aerial wobbles in the Arsenal defence?

Petr Cech's rush from goal precipitated their slide to opening-day defeat to West Ham, while Calum Chambers and Gabriel in front of him are a second-choice pairing.

Christian Benteke, all six foot three inches of him, might fancy his chances of ruffling some feathers.

And he won't be the only one. Martin Skrtel has scored three goals in his last two Premier League games against Arsenal.

Big encouragement for Liverpool as the Arsenal team-sheet lands minus first-choice central defensive partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. The German is unwell while Koscielny has a back problem - leaving Callum Chambers and Gabriel to deal with the threat of Christian Benteke.

Lucas may well be on his way out at Liverpool but not just yet. He replaces Jordan Henderson, who has a foot injury, while £29m buy from Hoffenheim Roberto Firmino gets the chance to show what he can do on his first full Premier League start.

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Arsenal's meeting with Liverpool at The Emirates tonight will tell us much more about two teams with designs - at the very least on the top four in the Premier League.

"Liverpool have not been entirely convincing and yet have recorded two wins and two clean sheets against Stoke City and Bournemouth while Arsenal bounced back from a shock home defeat to West Ham United in their opening game with victory at Crystal Palace.

"There will be a psychological blow delivered by the victors according to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who will hope for better fortune than the 4-1 thrashing handed out here by Arsenal last season."

If Arsenal lose tonight, their pre-season talk of a genuine title bid will have to be set against a six-point deficit to Manchester City.

Victory would put Liverpool six points ahead of the Gunners, five ahead of Chelsea and two ahead of Manchester United in the chase for Champions League spots.

Early days, but this is a chance for Arsene Wenger and Brendan Rodgers to lay some leather on one of their main rivals.
