  1. Until next time...

    FT: Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Thanks for joining me today - our next live text commentary from the Football League is next Saturday, when Burnley host Birmingham City (12:30 BST).

In the meantime, there's the little matter of some Premier League action to follow this afternoon, and you can also read the match report from today's goalless draw at Deepdale.

  2. FT: Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing told Sky Sports: "I know its going to be tough finding room and you're going to get kicked, which is to be expected.

"We didn't play great at times but a point is well deserved.

"If we weren't challenging then there was no point in me moving. We're still trying to get players in, so hopefully we'll improve."

  3. FT: Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Preston midfielder John Welsh told Sky Sports: "We know how good Stewart Downing is so I just wanted to keep him in my view as much as I can.

"I think we take each game as it comes this season. We're here to compete, not to make the numbers up."

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Joe Garner

Well it's nice to avoid defeat on the opening day, isn't it?

Preston had the better of the few chances through Bailey Wright and Will Keane, while Grant Leadbitter and Daniel Ayala had the best of Middlesbrough's efforts.

A point apiece to start the season.

  5. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Albert Adomah hobbles off for Middlesbrough and play is stopped for about a minute.

Preston sportingly give the ball back and we've probably got a bit of extra time to be added on here.

  6. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Preston with the ball, but with little movement in front they're hitting it long to Joe Garner and Jordan Hugill.

So far, that approach is not creating much.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Joe Garner has his head in his hands.

A quality cross from Greg Cunningham finds the Preston striker coming in at the back post but he is unable to get any power or direction on the header.

Four minutes to be added on.

  8. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A rare opportunity sees Stewart Downing run with the ball again. His outside-of-the-boot cross falls to Albert Adomah, but two Preston defenders launch their bodies at him to block his shot.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Preston v Middlesbrough

Adam Forshaw comes on to replace Boro captain Grant Leadbitter. Preston fans give him a chorus of boos for his involvement in a tussle earlier.

  10. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

For a second it looks as if it will open up in the box for Preston midfielder Daniel Johnson, but as he attempts to turn the ball is hacked away.

Greg Cunningham's ball in afterwards drifts over everyone.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Will Keane's Preston debut is over as Middlesbrough-born Jordan Hugill is on for him. Keane had an effort cleared off the line in the first half, one of the few clear cut chances today.

  12. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Stewart Downing

Stewart Downing finally has a bit of space to work with - he turns smartly on the edge of the area, but an effort with his weaker right foot goes over.

A "he's one of our own" chant comes out from the Boro fans.

  13. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Preston are just struggling to keep the ball at the minute.

A tiring Joe Garner is unable to chase the channel balls with as much verve, and Middlesbrough are keeping a lot of the ball.

  14. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Dangerous free-kick from Middlesbrough from the left but as Grant Leadbitter whips it in, Cristhian Stuani's first involvement in the game is to be flagged offside.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Aitor Karanka

Middlesborugh boss Aitor Karanka, who signed a new four-year contract in the week, makes his second change.

It's another debutant with striker Kike withdrawn and new signing Cristhian Stuani on. Marnick Vermijl then jogs off for Preston with Chris Humphrey coming on.

  16. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

It all boils over for a second.

Preston's Will Keane is the first to fly into a challenge, followed by Greg Cunningham. That incenses Middlesbrough skipper Grant Leadbitter who begins grabbing one or two white shirts.

It all calms down pretty quickly, with a Preston free-kick awarded at the end of it.

  17. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

It must be said, centre-back Dael Fry has looked very composed on his first senior appearance for Middlesbrough at the age of 17, especially having to deal with Joe Garner.

George Friend's break down the left comes to nothing as Boro begin to enjoy more of the ball.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

John Welsh mistimed a sliding tackle trying to break up that Middlesbrough attack and is cautioned for his attempt.

  19. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A lovely ball by Middlesbrough substitute Diego Fabbrini to find Albert Adomah in the area, he rounds the keeper but across comes a Preston defender to clear.

The first real chance that's been created in a while.

  20. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Simon Grayson

Preston fans begin to go their repertoire of songs to try to inspire their team, in what has been a flat second half all round so far.

Boss Simon Grayson has attacking options on the bench in Chris Humphrey and Jordan Hugill, will he turn to them?

  21. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Diego Fabbrini looks to have taken up a central role behind Kike for Boro, the position that Stewart Downing started the game in.

Downing appears to be drifting out further left at the moment in a bid to find some space to influence this game.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Adam Reach is the man to make way for on-loan Watford midfielder Diego Fabbrini, who makes his first Middlesbrough appearance.

  23. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough show signs of the team that impressed for so much of last season, spraying some neat passes around.

No final product though, and midfielder Diego Fabbrini - a summer loan signing from Watford - looks set to come on in a moment.

  24. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Dimitrios Konstantopoulos

As a long ball is sent over the top by Preston, Dimi Konstantopoulos races to the edge of his area quickly.

Simon Grayson's side are going to have to be a lot better than that to beat one of the best keepers in this division.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Kike is unhappy with a few challenges and decisions that have not gone his side's way. He explains these thoughts to the referee a bit too keenly and is the first Middlesbrough player in the notebook.

  26. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Much better few minutes this for the visitors as from the resultant corner, Daniel Ayala towers up but is unable to direct his header on target.

  27. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Finally we've seen Albert Adomah stretch his legs.

A break down the right from the Boro winger, he finds Kike with his cross but he is beaten to the ball by a defender. Corner.

  28. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough win a free-kick wide out on the right, but Stewart Downing's inswinging delivery is easily gathered by Jordan Pickford. Boro are still yet to have a shot on target.

  29. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Pressure straight away from the hosts as they break down the right but the low cross is hacked away.

Tom Clarke's header forward nearly then falls into the path of the advancing Will Keane but Dimi Konstantopoulos is quickly off his line.

  30. KICK-OFF

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

The sun is breaking out over Deepdale and Preston get the second half under way. No changes for either team.

  31. The player's view

    HT: Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Preston striker Jermaine Beckford, who is missing today with a knock, told Sky Sports: "We can take a lot of positives from that.

"We put them under pressure in the right places and I think the manager will be happy with what he has seen so far."

  32. Football, football, football

    HT: Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Arsenal matchday programme

After the outcome of this game, you can stick with BBC Sport for all of the coverage of the Premier League action from this afternoon.

Three games over there for you to enjoy later.

  33. The best of the rest

    HT: Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Kit Symons

Been away and missed the opening Saturday in the 2015-16 Football League season? Or were you too focused on your team and missed the other scores?

Don't worry, we at BBC Sport have you covered.

Here are the five stories you may missed from the action yesterday.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A half which Preston have just about edged in terms of possession and chances.

Bailey Wright's header and Will Keane's shot, which was cleared off the line, were the pick of their efforts.

Middlesbrough were patchy when they had the ball, but captain Grant Leadbitter will feel he could have given them the lead when he found himself free in the area but fired wide.

    All to play for.

  35. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Joe Garner

Middlesbrough free-kick and you can guess who has given it away?

The referee is now having a word with Joe Garner, who you imagine is approaching a final warning, after his latest aerial challenge.

  36. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Joe Garner is determined to take on the Middlesbrough defenders any way they come at him. He wins a free-kick this time from 17-year-old debutant Dael Fry, by just being more determined to get in front of the ball.

  37. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Nervy moments for the Preston defence as goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender Tom Clarke nearly get themselves into trouble.

Up the other end, after challenging for the ball, Joe Garner somehow takes out two Boro defenders as he lands.

  38. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Preston v Middlesbrough

Continued pressure at the moment from the home side, with a number of deep crosses coming in.

They have not perhaps created too much, but Preston are certainly the more dominant team at the moment at Deepdale.

  39. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A cross from the left is just too far in front of Preston striker Will Keane to make a clean contact on the ball.

Daniel Johnson collets and sets up Marnick Vermijl, but the full-back horribly miscues his shot into a pile of bodies.

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Tom Clarke

After those flurry of chances, Preston spend the next couple of minutes just keeping possession.

A short pass back to Tom Clarke forces him into a full-on challenge with George Friend, but Clarke is booked for his involvement.

  41. CLOSE!

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A frantic minute and almost a goal for Preston, as a free-kick falls to Will Keane, whose drilled shot is cleared off the line by George Friend.

Moments later, Boro keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos spills a cross and it falls to Joe Garner, but he hits in straight back at Boro's number one.

  42. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Stewart Downing doing some defensive work high up the pitch and Middlesbrough work the ball wide to the right.

The cross is a poor one and not going to trouble 'the wall' of Preston's back five. Or white walkers... you're welcome, Game of Thrones fans.

  43. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Perhaps trying to get his team going, Joe Garner then tussles with Daniel Ayala in the air.

A few pleasantries are exchanged and the referee tells them to both get on with it.

  44. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Joe Garner

Is Preston's danger man the one who will be able to find the breakthrough?

There is a real lack of pace in the game at the moment, but Joe Garner is a player who is capable of something special out of nothing.

  45. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Simon Grayson

It's fair to say these two have been spending some time on their shape in pre-season.

Not much joy for the attackers from both teams at the moment, who are struggling to find space.

Preston boss Simon Grayson, a former defender, will be quite content.

  46. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A superb run by Boro left-back George Friend gets him from inside his own half to the edge of the Preston penalty area.

His final pass is poor though and North End eventually clear the danger.

  47. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

A succession of long balls are launched upfield by Preston, but the visitors' defence is more than equal to it.

  48. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

John Welsh is following Stewart Downing around like his shadow at the moment and launches a well-timed tackle to stop the Middlesbrough man getting the ball.

Downing is yet to really get into this game.

  49. CLOSE!

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Grant Leadbitter knows he should have scored for Middlesbrough.

A lovely one-two gets him inside the area, he sells the defender a dummy and then from 10 yards out he smashes the ball wide.

  50. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Gary Parkinson

Worth noting that before that Bailey Wright chance, both sets of supporters took part in a moment's applause for Gary Parkinson, who is at Deepdale watching the game today.

Parkinson, who played for both clubs, suffers from locked-in syndrome and is still held in high regard by fans at Preston and Boro.

  51. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

First opening of the game and it's a glorious chance.

Paul Gallagher's corner is met by Bailey Wright, but the defender is unable to direct his free header towards goal.

  52. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

As soon as Middlesbrough get the ball, Preston get themselves into a back five with wing-backs Greg Cunningham and Marnick Vermijl slotting into their defensive duties.

  53. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Paul Gallagher's free-kick is launched towards to Preston's big boys from the back but none of them are able to get a touch on the ball.

  54. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Dael Fry making his mark on his first professional start, but his stray right boot catches Joe Garner in the face. Preston free-kick 20 yards out...

  55. Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Good early pressing from Middlesbrough, pushing on when Preston have the ball.

Aitor Karanka's side had the best defence in the Championship last season, conceding just 37 goals.

  56. KICK-OFF

    Preston 0-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough get us going at Deepdale, with Stewart Downing involved in the kick-off.

  57. In the tunnel

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

Tom Clarke and Grant Leadbitter are in the tunnel about to lead out their teams at Deepdale.

It's a grey day in Lancashire, but there is raucous noise inside the ground for the first bit of Championship football there in four years.

  58. Bogey team Boro

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

Although Preston did beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in 1987, you have to go back 43 years since the Lilywhites beat Boro in the league.

They have only met six times in league meetings in that period, though.

  59. Listen live on BBC local radio

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

Unfortunately, we are unable to stream Football League commentaries on the BBC Sport website because of a rights issue.

However, if you're able to receive BBC Radio Lancashire and BBC Tees on your radio, both stations will have full match commentary from Deepdale this lunchtime.

They're among 38 BBC local radio stations which will be providing about 2,500 football commentaries during the 2015-16 season.

  60. Teenager Fry makes Boro debut

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

Middlesbrough legend Bernie Slaven gives his backing to 17-year-old Dael Fry, who makes his senior debut at centre-back for Boro this lunchtime.

  61. BreakingTeam news - Middlesbrough

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

    Middlesbrough team

Do you believe in second debuts? I don't. You have your debut and then it is done with for me. But if you are into that kind of thing, hometown hero Stewart Downing makes his 'second debut' after returning to the club from West Ham.

At centre-back, 17-year-old England Under-18 international Dael Fry makes his first senior appearance, while on-loan Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas starts at right-back.

  62. Beckford missing for Preston

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

Good news for Preston fans - their play-off final hat-trick hero shouldn't be out for too long.

As for today, Will Keane gets the nod up front alongside Joe Garner.

  63. BreakingTeam news - Preston

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

    Preston North End team

Simon Grayson is without the man who scored a hat-trick at Wembley, Jermaine Beckford, who is not even on the bench, so hands Manchester United loanee Will Keane his debut.

A fellow Old Trafford academy graduate, Marnick Vermijl, also makes his first start after joining on loan from Sheffield Wednesday with left-back Greg Cunningham and keeper Jordan Pickford making up the new boys beginning their Lilywhites' careers.

  64. Good morning

    Preston v Middlesbrough (12:00 BST)

After 26 goals across the 11 games so far this weekend in the Championship, we bring you the final game from the second tier on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 season.

Newly promoted Preston impressively took apart Swindon at Wembley in the League One play-off final to get back to this level for the first time since 2011.

The very next day, Middlesbrough missed out out on a place in the top flight when Norwich beat them in the play-off final.

Who can make the perfect start today?
