  1. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

That's all from us this evening.

You can read the match report over here and catch up on the Champions League draw over here.

Until next time, be seeing you.

  2. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

So Southampton head out of the Europa League.

Some people have been saying it's a blessing in disguise, but Ronald Koeman sounded like the kind of guy who was looking forward to the prospect of a European adventure this season.

Not the trophy maybe, but some small glory at least.

Instead it's back to the Premier League. Norwich at home on Sunday, at 13:30 BST.

  4. Manager reaction

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

More from Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "I think we started well and created good chances in the first 15 minutes but we made a mistake for their goal, Jay Rodriguez made a mistake when he can't afford to make a mistake.

"But I think the final result is not the result that we saw on the pitch."

  5. Manager reaction

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, speaking to BT Sport: " Unlucky. In both games we were the better team, we had the most chances. We scored a goal at home that was disallowed and tonight we need a penalty for a handball from the free-kick.

"Maybe it was the best performance until now, from our team. We worked very hard but sometimes you need good decisions. We didn't have that. In my opinion that makes the result.

"Sadio Mane wasn't 100% and it will be a long season. I didn't take that risk to put him in. We need him for more games."

  7. Speaking of Odd results...

By the way you can check out all of the other Europa League play-off second legs scores over here.

The stand-out result of the night? Borussia Dortmund beating Odd of Norway 7-2 to win 11-5 on aggregate.

The Germans were 3-0 down in the first leg after about 20 minutes -  think you'll agree, that's quite the comeback.

  9. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

For my money, that was a seriously odd performance.

Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic on the bench and they launch it up to Graziano Pelle all evening long?

Southampton's European adventure is over for another year. Surely not for another 13 years?

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

And that is that. Ronald Koeman gathers his crutches and trudges off down the line.

    His team are out.

  11. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

But Midtjylland give it away, Southampton can launch yet another one up for Graziano Pelle.

Again hand ball though. Seconds left.

  12. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Rilwan Hassan breaks forward and shoots on goal - when the corner flag is surely the thing to do?

Graziano Pelle handles bringing one down, brilliantly, but it's a foul.

    This should be it now.

  13. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Oriol Romeu lines up Matt Targett for a shot - scuffed and deflected.

A brilliant cross from Dusan Tadic almost reaches Graziano Pelle but Midtjylland clear again!

  14. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Maya Yoshida then Matt Targett launch the ball forward - neither can breach the Midtjylland back line.

    Three minutes to go...

  15. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

I'm wrong! Four minutes to play in stoppage time.

  16. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

How long will the ref add on?

Not long I reckon. Scrappy, very scrappy now, from Southampton. They can't get it forward.

  17. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

James Ward-Prowse launches a free-kick from the halfway line with all but one Southampton player lining the box.

But it's weak and Midtjylland end up clearing - even threatening to break through for a second.

Shane Long then flashes on on target - so easy to stop but it's the first save in a long time from Johan Dahlin.

  18. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Martin Pusic launches himself to the ground, with Matt Targett's hand in vaguely close proximity.

Obviously never a pen but Pusic was never going to reach the cross either - he opted to gamble on the tumble.

    Southampton have to gamble now.

  19. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

This is fizzing out now, you can feel the tie slipping towards the kind of five minutes that teams who are very good at home are very good at seeing out.

You get the feeling Midtjylland have been here before.

  20. CLOSE!

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

    It should be goodnight Southampton.

Brilliant hold-up play from Martin Pasic, a one-two with Daniel Royer and the ball ends up flying just over the top right corner. Inches.

The Southampton response? Juanmi is on for Saints, with Steven Davis off.

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Austria forward Martin Pusic is on for Petter Andersson, for Midtjylland. Andersson's looked dangerous.

Ten minutes left for Southampton to find a goal.

  22. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Let's not forget Sadio Mane is on the bench tonight as well.

Throw him on! Or has interest from Manchester United turned his head? Ronald Koeman has got one change still up his sleeve.

Saving it for extra time would be very optimistic.

  23. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Will Shane Long's pace swing it in the last 15? Not if Southampton continue to pump the ball up to the big man it won't...

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

A change up top and Shane Long is on for Jay Rodriguez - he's still feeling his way back from that terrible injury.

  25. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

This time Graziano Pelle does rise highest to reach the cross but for some reason looks to head it down to Jay Rodriguez instead!

Why not go for goal there?! He was on the edge of the six-yard box! Better stuff from Saints though...

  26. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Twenty minutes and counting then. One goal and we're headed for extra-time and pens.

Steven Davis looks for Graziano Pelle on the cross, headed clear, Matt Targett does the same, headed clear.

Brilliant defending from the home side. Pelle's no slouch in the air but he's been dominated this second half.

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Rilwan Hassan is pretty much through on goal but here's Matt Targett with a crunching challenge to take him out.

Targett knew exactly what he was doing here - he would have been the last man had it not been for the fact that Cuco Martina is absolutely rapid.

Jamie Quainton : Getting a bit tiring watching us just play into Pelle all the time. Hoping Saints will put long and mane on for more creativity.

Joel Ejike Oblates : Saints went from a team of good home grown players to mediocre classed team. They're playing tonight's game without a bearing.

Tim Sparv cuts down Jay Rodriguez just as he's reaching full stride and is booked.

It was like a cheetah taking out a gazelle.

Rilwan Hassan is on for Pione Sisto - the winger must be spend.

  30. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

More whistles and jeers from the home side now - they think Cuco Martina has passed the ball back to the 'keeper but the replay shows it's a horrific piece of ball control.

Martina's then turned inside and out by Pione Sisto but the cross is wayward - there were real options the box as well. 2-0 and Saints are out of this.

  31. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Oriol Romeu is a lucky boy indeed. Jakob Poulsen is felled on the edge of the box (or was it inside?) but the referee plays on - much to the frustration of the home fans.

Graziano Pelle pops up again but this time in his own box, to head clear from a free-kick.

Not much momentum about their play at all here, Southampton. Midtjylland are slowing things up and Ronald Koeman's side have got a lot of work to do.

  32. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Another James Ward-Prowse shot from distance is blocked. At least it wasn't floated into the mixer?

It could well be the driving rain, but Ronald Koeman really is looking sour down on the touchline.

Half an hour to save their European campaign.

  33. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent: "We're not asking enough questions of this team. Taking off the third centre-half would have been my decision when we went 1-0 down.

"With Tadic on Koeman has gone with a four and two up the front and he has made an impact straight away."

  34. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Dusan Tadic is straight into it as well, he nicks the ball deep in the Midtjylland half, cuts inside and drives one towards goal.

It's wide and getting wider though. But what an entrance that would have been!

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Now this is bold. Here comes Dusan Tadic on for Steven Caulker. Are Ronald Koeman's side going back to 4-2-3-1?

Either way, Southampton need Tadic to show his best here. We've seen him change games in the past.

  36. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Pione Sisto looks a tidy player. Here he is bringing the ball down perfectly and jinking off away from Oriol Romeu and into space.

Meanwhile, the Koeman brothers are looking pretty grim on the bench.

Changes already? There's activity down there...

  37. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Hands on hips, what is Graziano Pelle thinking?

The ball is offered up to him again - deep from Cuco Martina - but there's too many men around him, he's crowded out. Again.

Really don't get why Southampton are playing like this. Surely they've strengths elsewhere? Like passing the ball?

  39. CLOSE!

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Hang on Morten Rasmussen, you can't have Duncan on your back if you're going to miss a header like that.

Brilliant delivery from the free-kick but Rasmussen's header is less Duncan Ferguson and more tame and wide. A let off for Southampton though - he should have done much better with that.

  40. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

It's still all about Graziano Pelle for Southampton. They look for him with another long ball but the ref blows up - either a foul because the Italian handled it or because he climbed all over his marker.

  41. KICK-OFF

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

  43. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

    Jay Rodriguez

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent: "The manager has got decisions to make. I don' think he can continue to play five at the back. Maybe he could put Rodrigiez on the left and Tadic on the right. He's also got Long and Mane. He has attacking options and I think he has to make those decisions quickly."

  44. The Duncan question

    Get involved using #bbcfootball

Larstoftlarsen:  Rasmussen's nickname was given by his former youth coach who believed his heading ability resembled that of Duncan Ferguson.

So that is why striker Morten Rasmussen has got Duncan on his back!

  45. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent :"Southampton are going to have to show some composure. They are going to have to keep encouraging each other and make sure they don't get frustrated. You have to give Midtjylland credit. They are well organised and they are playing to their strengths."

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

It's Midtyjlland who finish the first 45 the stronger - Pione Sisto's little flick almost plays in Morten Rasmussen - do we really call him Duncan - but Saints recover to clear.

All to do for Ronald Koeman's men from here.

  47. Post update

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Just the two extra minutes added on as Maya Yoshida and Matt Targett fizzle out down the left wing.

Midtyjlland break but there's Jose Fonte again, he's everywhere at the back.

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

This is officially the best time to score if you want to change a game but Southampton are hanging on here as Jose Fonte flicks a dangerous Pione Sisto cross out behind for a corner.

Jakob Poulsen takes an absolute age with it and is booked for time-wasting. Add it on ref!

Finally it comes in and Daniel Royer balloons over in comic fashion.

  49. Post update

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Just over five to go before half-time and Midtyjlland almost double their lead - their best chance apart from the goal but Pione Sisto curls one over from the left of goal.

Where did all that space come from?

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

What can I tell you Dave? As far I can see Graziano Pelle's been pretty much the only outlet.

Another Southampton corner is defended well, blocked by Petter Anderson's face at the front post as Jay Rodriguez connects.

Hang on, here's a yellow card for the striker - I can only say it must be for the way he tugged at Anderson's shirt, telling the midfielder to get up after he'd hit the deck.

  51. Post update

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent:  "I hope Saints don't start that long ball and start to panic and just try and hit Pelle. You've got to mix your game up. I will find it interesting to see how long Koeman stays with three centre-backs while it remains 1-0."

  52. Post update

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Morten Rasmussen is right in his element now he's got his goal.

Superbly channelling former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson as he holds the ball up on the halfway line, wins the foul, the time for his team to breathe with Southampton pressing hard.

I assume that is the Duncan connection anyway. Childhood hero?

Saints need a goal before half-time - they should have had two, you could argue.

  53. Post update

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent:  "As a coach, when you're back in your last third you don''t want to give anything away away from home. Jay Rodriguez won the ball and did well. He just had to make sure he plays the ball forward but he gets robbed and that's really cost us."

  54. Post update

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

What's the response gonna be from Ronald Koeman and co now then?

As it stands they're on their way out of Europe, at the second hurdle, in the pouring rain.

How do you turn this one around?

  55. GOAL - Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

    Morten Rasmussen

    Morten Duncan Rasmussen celebrates

    Call me Duncan.

That's what he's got written on his shirt anyway. Former Celtic striker Morten Rasmussen slides into space in the box before finishing low and calm past Maarten Stekelenburg.

Saints gave the ball away at left-back, where Jay Rodriguez was covering, and have been punished for it.

Are we going 1-1 and penalties? Or are Saints on their way out?

  56. Post update

    Midtyjlland 0-0 Southampton

It's all about Graziano Pelle's chest at the moment.

Every time Saints get the ball it's neat and tidy, patient play to work an opening to hit Pelle.

This time the slap-down is intercepted though.

  57. CLOSE!

    Midtyjlland 0-0 Southampton

Massive chance wasted. The best so far.

Here's another Graziano Pelle slap-down and this time it's Steven Davis tacking on in the box. He's in a great position but the shot is straight at Johan Dahlin.

It falls to Jay Rodriguez, who fires into the side netting but the flag was up anyway.

  58. Post update

    Midtyjlland 0-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent : "Martina has started well again tonight. He has got forward well.

"It's good to see Southampton's full-backs are pushing right up. They have got to do that because that's where the width is going to come from."

  59. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

The rain has properly started now. The kind that ruins a week's camping holiday in half an hour.

James Ward-Prowse finds space but can only trickle a shot straight at the 'keeper, from outside the box.

  60. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Here's a bit more initiative from the Danes - massive pressure high up the pitch forces Matt Targett into a mistake but Saints somehow still escape with the ball.

They work a half chance for Jay Rodriguez, who skews a volley way over, leaning back.

  61. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

How are Midtjylland feeling about all this anyway? Do they sit back and hold an away-goal lead?

So far it's Saints who've shown more initiative and adventure, as you'd expect.

But that's really not saying much. One for the purists?

  62. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

There's not a lot of noise around the ground so far tonight, that's for sure.

You can hear the ball stop dead as it slaps on to Graziano Pelle's thigh.

  63. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent : "Saints were very unfortunate not to score. It was a good header from Fonte.

"Rodriguez then did well for the chance to Ward-Prowse. Pelle and Rodriguez are going to be a handful up front.

"Saints have two good chances and really should be leading."

  64. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Now when Midtjylland press forward for the first time since their two long throws Southampton sit right back.

'Go on and have a shot from range,' they say. Midtjylland oblige, twice, and neither's any good. Oriol Romeu is there putting the pressure on in front of what's now a back five.

  65. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Are Southampton going to regret not taking one of those early chances?

Looks like there's plenty more to come from them - Saints are having all of the ball so far.

  66. CLOSE!

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Close again from Saints! James Ward-Prowse sees a shot blocked after a fast counter - two very good opportunities in the matter of minutes.

It was a lovely cross-field pass from Graziano Pelle to find Jay Rodriguez - and his cut-back found Ward-Prowse.

They're looking up for this, Southampton. But should Rodriguez have shot? A Marco van Basten-esque volley into the far corner?

  67. CLOSE!

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Ronald Koeman's set his side out with wing-backs tonight by the looks of it.

Jay Rodriguez has their first foray forward and wins a corner - Jose Fonte throws himself at the ball and it's headed off the line!

  68. Post update

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

One match away from the Europa League group stage then.

Saints need to score, or else they're out. A 1-1 draw, and it's extra-time, maybe pens.

The home side have gone all route one already - two long throws straight into the Saints box.

  69. KICK-OFF

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

  72. 'Crucial period for Saints'

    Midtjylland v Southampton (19:45 BST)

    Adam Blackmore

    BBC Radio Solent sports editor

"The start of a crucial period on and off the pitch for Southampton begins with an awkward second leg clash with the Danish champions FC Midtjylland.

"Ronald Koeman's side know they need to score to have any chance of progressing into the group stages, and that clarity may help them as they look to impose themselves on inferior opponents.

"But putting a good 90 minutes together is something Saints have failed to do in their six matches so far in August, and they cannot afford to be careless in possession like they have been so far this month.

"If they play with a high tempo and find the authority they possessed last season, they should still go through. If not, the pressure will mount ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match with Norwich and the transfer deadline."

  73. Team news

    Midtjylland v Southampton (19:45 BST)

    Here's the team news:

Midfielder Victor Wanyama, linked with a move away from St Mary's, did not travel because of a stomach infection.

Forward Sadio Mane, a target for Manchester United, starts on the bench after picking up a knock in last Sunday's goalless draw with Watford.

Southampton : Stekelenburg, Martina, Fonte, Caulker, Yoshida, Targett, Romeu, S. Davis, Ward-Prowse, Pelle, Rodriguez.

Subs: K. Davis, Cedric, Long, Mane, Tadic, Reed, Juanmi.

Midtjylland XI:  Dahlin, Bach Bak, Hansen, Sviatchenko, Lauridsen, Sparv, Sisto, Andersson, Poulsen, Royer, Rasmussen.

Subs: Andersen, Romer, Olsson, Onuachu, Pusic, Hassan, Banggaard.

  74. 'We don't want to stop in August'

Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem were brushed aside (5-0 on aggregate) in the Europa League third qualifying round, but tonight's opposition - the Danish champions - proved they are no pushovers in the first leg at St Mary's last week.

At 1-1, this is what you might call delicately balanced.

It's not what Ronald Koeman's calling it though.

"If we play on our level, doing less mistakes in possession, if we press and play more direct, I’m totally confident we can reach the European group stage," the Dutchman said.

"It’s really European football if you reach the group stage because you have European football until December. We don’t want that to stop in August. We know what we have to do.”

Split pic showing Southampton in 2003

Kevin Phillips, Graeme Le Saux, Fabrice Fernandes, James Beattie, Rory Delap.

Stellar names, all, but what else do they have in common?

They played as Southampton were dumped out of the old Uefa Cup at the first hurdle by Romanian club Steaua Bucharest back in October 2003.

Saints fans had to wait another 13 years to see their side in Europe again, and now Danish champions FC Midtjylland stand between their team and the Europa League proper.

Can Ronald Koeman's side do it?
