  1. What next?

Tonight is the first time that Manchester United and City have both been beaten on the same Champions League night.

They will have to bounce back quickly - United face Wolfsburg at home in their next Champions League game on 30 September, while City travel to take on Borussia Monchengladbach.

  2. Post update

    Support for Shaw

  3. Post update

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

More from Louis van Gaal:  "It is the same game as against Swansea. We dominate the game, create chances but we are not finishing."

  4. Van Gaal on Shaw

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "Luke Shaw is in hospital, he will be transferred with us, maybe, otherwise a day later and shall be operated in Manchester probably. It is awful."

  5. 'A very bad tackle'

    Shaw injury

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "It is awful. The boy is in his second season and he has been playing fantastic. And now this happens.

"He had the oxygen mask on and was crying in the dressing room. You must judge for yourself. If I say it was a penalty and a red card then I am a bad loser.

"It was a very bad tackle."

  6. Shaw set for operation

    Shaw injury

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of the right leg and will be transferred to Manchester to be operated on, the club have announced.

We are still waiting to hear from Louis van Gaal.

Phil, Bristol:  Gutted. Hard to know where City went wrong. Juve defended very well, and Buffon pulled off a couple of blinders. But Sterling should have scored twice.

Tony, Manchester:  Disappointing result but people are forgetting we were playing the Italian Champions and last seasons finalists. Long way to go.

Gavriel Seiter:  Unlucky tonight. On the bright side my United fan friends can't make fun of me tomorrow. No shame in losing to Juve.

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

We are waiting on full confirmation on the extent of Luke Shaw's injury but we will let you know as soon as we have it.

    Luke Shaw
  11. Sympathy for Shaw

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"The injury to Luke Shaw was difficult for me to watch, and I can sit happily and watch Korean horror movies.

"It actually hurt to watch because I've been through it a couple of times myself. I know the horror of thinking about whether it's going to be right again, whether you're ever going to get back.

"With modern hospital treatments I am sure he will, but it was a horrible, horrible moment in what looked like being a key season for him."

  12. Juve end their wait

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

  13. Kompany injury

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

Confirmation that Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany was withdrawn with a calf injury tonight.

More on that when we have it.

Martin, Bristol:  Let's all just jump on the 'Premier League isn't good enough' bandwagon! I feel it's the right reaction to judge a league based on the results, not performances, of two English teams in Europe! Imagine losing to last year's finalists and to some questionable decisions despite complete domination away in Europe's premier competition... Shocking!

  15. 'We've got a lot to learn'

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

Quote Message: I didn’t see it [the Luke Shaw injury] but a few of the players witnessed it, it was very sad and we are trying to find out how he is. We missed that cutting edge in the final third. In the first half they scored from their only chance and they punished us on the break. It’s a very disappointing night. We’ve got a lot to learn.
    Chris Smalling
  16. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

Is that the difference at this level? Juventus scored two goals from almost nothing while Wilfried Bony and Raheem Sterling wasted some great chances for Manchester City.

  17. 'We played better than Juventus'

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "It's disappointing, I don't think we deserved to lose. We had better chances and played better than Juventus. It was a typical Champions League game, both teams didn't create many chances but we had more possession. It was not a tactical problem, Juventus just scored two beautiful goals."

  18. Juve's defence stand out

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Paul Pogba really caught the eye, Juan Cuadrado worked hard, but it was the Juventus defenders who really caught they eye. They played so well."

Pete Roach:  The only good thing for both of the Manchester clubs tonight is that the other lost.

Jon:  Terrible night for United. Moreno should've been off, ref poor. Mata, Fellaini useless. Must take chances, created enough.

Bhavin Shah:  More upset about Shaw than the defeat - didn't deserve the draw considering their keeper didn't make a 2nd half save.

  21. Power outage

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

    Conor McNamara

BBC Radio 5 live at the Philips Stadion

"The Dutch journalists were celebrating so vociferously that one of them kicked my power point out of the wall and I was put off air.

"The PSV players are doing a lap of honour round the pitch. It's a a famous night for them but a costly one for Manchester United with the injury to Luke Shaw as well."

  22. 'They were lucky'

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

Manchester City's Yaya Toure, speaking to BT Sport: "I think the Italian team defended well and I think they were lucky today. We just have to be strong and try to bounce back in the next game. We missed a lot of chances today. We have to learn from it and try to do better."

    Yaya Toure
  23. Elsewhere in Europe

It's full time in Tuesday's Champions League games. The rampant Cristiano Ronaldo has bagged a hat-trick in a 4-0 win for  Real Madrid over Shakhtar Donetsk, while fellow Group A rivals Paris St-Germain opened their campaign with a victory over Malmo.

Wolfsburg have beaten CSKA Moscow courtesy of a Julian Draxler goal, while Atletico Madrid won 2-0 in Galatasaray.

Borussia Monchengladbach were back in Europe's top competition after a 37-year absence but lost 3-0 to Sevilla and Champions League debutants Astana were beaten 2-0 by Benfica.

  24. Post update

Double woe for Manchester tonight then.

Both sides can take positives from their displays but the overall feeling is one of disappointment and ultimately frustration.

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

BIG celebrations in Eindhoven as PSV come from behind to take victory in Group B.

Luke Shaw's suspected broken leg will throw more cloud over this game as far as Manchester United are concerned. They were on top for large spells but were just not clinical in front of goal.

  26. Post update

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

Caution to the wind time as Manchester Unietd flood black shirts forward. PSV smell a third on the break and are almost in on goal but Daley Blind just about hacks it away.

  29. Same old story?

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Fernandinho looks dejected

What it is about City and the Champions League? They came up against a top side tonight, bossed the game for long stretches but came undone when it mattered.

  30. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"We keep talking about how much Juventus love defending, but at no point in this game has Wilfried Bony looked threatening.

"The one clear opening he had he ballooned high and wide."

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

City lose their opening game in the Champions League again.

A huge reaction from Juventus. They know this is a big moment in terms of Group D.

Memphis Depay is ever lively, and his low cross from the right evades a clutch of players, including substitute Marouane Fellaini, and runs on through.

    Five minutes left in Eindhoven.

  35. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

"It's a familiar, familiar feeling around Etihad Stadium - Manchester City finding life tough in the Champions League even when they are dominant domestically. There is just an unease around the team and supporters when it comes to this tournament. It still feels like Manchester City need to convince themselves that they belong here."

  36. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Juventus are very comfortable in this situation, defending deep. They are where they want to be now. That was almost something brilliant from Yaya Toure - how many times have we seen him do that?

"It's what Manchester City need right now."

  37. Post update

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

Maxime Lestienne has been a danger down PSV's left and after he blasts over former Newcastle man Luuk de Jong wastes a glorious chance to wrap this one up.

In on goal, onside, hammers way over the top...

    Maxime Lestienne

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

Quality early hit from Yaya Toure, no backlift, plenty of dip and power but once again Gigi Buffon is equal to it, a full-length dive and turn away.

  39. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

Nicolas Otamendi was rolled slightly for that Alvaro Morata goal but it was by no means a mistake. A brilliantly taken goal from a striker who had been feeding off scraps all night.

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Juventus will go to three at the back now, with two wing-backs. And that is one of the hardest back fives you will face in world football.

"It's also worth noting, after Vincent Kompany came off, who came on to replace him? Nicolas Otamendi. And who got rolled for the Alvaro Morata goal? Nicolas Otamendi."

  42. SUBSTITUTION - Aguero on

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Ronaldo hat-trick

Can nothing stop Cristiano Ronaldo? The man has just completed his hat-trick against Shakhtar Donetsk by heading in after a Marcelo shot was parried by keeper Andriy Pyatov. That's eight goals in two games for Ronaldo.

    Not too bad.

  46. Elsewhere in Europe

    Benfica celebrate

Astana are the first team from Kazakhstan to take part in the Champions League but they have gone two down against Benfica after goals from Nicolas Gaitan and Konstantinos Mitroglou.

An Edinson Cavani header has doubled Paris-St Germain's lead against Malmo, while Sevilla are also 2-0 up against Borussia Monchengladbach after an Ever Banega penalty.

  47. Post update

    Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Is this another sob story for Manchester City in the Champions League? Yet again?

"It's an absolutely brilliant finish, and what a beautiful turn by Alvaro Morata. Joe Hart couldn't do anything about that."

  48. GOAL - Man City 1-2 Juventus

    Alvaro Morata (81 mins)

Another fine goal from last year's finalists as Alvaro Morata scores a belting drive! On his left foot he hits it early, it's going wide until the last second and curls just enough to kiss the inside of the post and go in.

    A superb goal.

    Morata celebrates

    Man City 1-1 Juventus

Paulo Dybala is on for Juventus, replacing goalscorer Mario Mandzukic. Into the last 10 minutes now as Jesus Navas warms up.

  50. Plenty of huff and puff

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

Vincent Kompany took his place on the bench as per a normal substitution, so perhaps the big man isn't injured after all? That is good news - but also a big call for Manuel Pellegrini.

  54. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Vincent Kompany has been caught square once or twice but it has to be an injury. Why else would you take him off? Surley Manuel Pellegrini's not annoyed about the goal they conceded?

"I still think it's unlikely we'll see Sergio Aguero come on too but right now you have to think about it. Wilfried Bony has had enough of an effect in this game."

  55. SUBSTITUTION - Kompany off

    Man City 1-1 Juventus

    This must be an injury?

Vincent Kompany trudges off as a marvellously bearded Nicolas Otamendi comes on for his debut.

    Vincent Kompany
  56. Post update

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial have linked up really nicely at times tonight and the Dutchman is nearly in again against his old club. Last man clears his lines though.

Still 22 minutes of normal time left in Eindhoven, where the second half kicked off late.

  57. Post update

    Man City 1-1 Juventus

    Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"Mario Mandzukic is onside, his run is perfectly timed and it's a brilliant pass from Paul Pogba. What a ball. He put it on a plate for him.

"Mandzukic had been really quiet up until now. Against the run of play for the second half, Juventus equalise."

    Mario Mandzukic

    Man City 1-1 Juventus

That sets us up nicely for the final 20 minutes. City switch one record signing with another as Kevin De Bruyne replaces Raheem Sterling. Sterling should have scored at least once tonight.

  59. GOAL - Man City 1-1 Juventus

    Mario Mandzukic (70 mins)

    Mario Mandzukic scores

    What. A. Cross!

  61. CLOSE!

    PSV 2-1 Man Utd

Manchester United will wonder just how they trail in Eindhoven. Bastian Schweinsteiger unlocks the PSV defence with a lovely floated pass over the top, Juan Mata is onside but takes his eye off it as he assesses his options in the middle and the ball skips away under his studs. Take that down and it's goal time.

  62. Post update

It is very surprising that Vincent Kompany wasn't penalised before that goal. City fans won't care. A win here would make a great start to their campaign.

    Narsingh celebrates

PSV lead! An excellently-taken goal too. Andres Guardado starts it with a ball down the left for Maxime Lestienne to chase, he whips in a terrific cross on the run, Marcos Rojo gets under the ball and Luciano Narsingh stoops to head powerfully into the net.

Not turning into a great night for United.

BBC Radio 5 live at the Etihad Stadium

"I'm not one to hold grudges but I can remember Juventus playing at Celtic Park a few years ago and they got away with the most terrible fouling, time after time, after time.

"There will be a few wry smiles from Celtic fans about that Manchester City goal. The good chances are building up for the home side."

    Man City 1-0 Juventus

    Kompany challenges for the ball
  69. CLOSE!

    PSV 1-1 Man Utd

Memphis Depay looking the business in Eindhoven, this time playing a nice one-two with Anthony Martial, but his firmly struck shot is saved easily by goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.

    Man City 1-0 Juventus

Raheem Sterling is denied again! But again, he should have scored. A £49m forward has to put these away.

Wonderful play from Wilfried Bony to step over the ball and allow David Silva away, he tees up Raheem Sterling on the left and again his shot is tame and easy for Gigi Buffon to claw away. Buffon is then up quickly to save Silva's follow-up too.

  71. Elsewhere in Europe

    Kevin Gameiro

Borussia Monchengladbach have made their return to Europe's top competition after a 37 year absence but they have gone behind against Sevilla after a Kevin Gameiro penalty following Yann Sommer's foul on Vitolo.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid's night looks to have got a little easier. Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Taras Stepanenko was sent off for picking up two bookings before Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty puts the Spaniards 2-0 up after a controversial decision by the referee. He gave the spot-kick after a Ronaldo shot appeared to hit Darijo Srna on the back rather than his arm.

That's Ronaldo's 78th Champions League goal and puts him one ahead of Lionel Messi.

    Benzema celebrates
  72. GOAL - Man City 1-0 Juventus

    Giorgio Chiellini (OG 58 mins)

Manchester City lead! And they have a double dose of fortune.

David Silva's corner from the left is headed into his own net by Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini, with Vincent Kompany towering above him.

Kompany had his arms all over the Italian centre-back. Nine times out of 10 that's a foul.

"A goalless draw isn't a result that would totally devastate Manchester City but they really will want to win their home games. It's certainly the correct score so far. It's been like a game of chess.

"I think Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to get his players in at half-time to make them understand how important a victory would be in helping them get out of the group. City have to attack more."

Against the run of play, PSV get back into it! Hector Moreno - the man whose challenge ended Luke Shaw's night - heads in a corner via the head of Daley Blind.

    Scrappy, but PSV won't care.

    Just call him Franz!

Chris 'Mike' Smalling sets off on a crazy run after picking Maxime Lestienne's pocket on halfway. On he goes, and still, and still! Beats the last man with a little turn, drills in the left-footed shot and Jeroen Zoet beats it clear.

What a goal that would have been!

"Memphis Depay showed lovely movement in the penalty area, such quick feet to nip in between two defenders. It's a brilliant goal, and he did celebrate it - against the club he left just months ago."

    Memphis Depay (41 mins)

This boy can play! In the Champions League anyway!

Another brilliant European goal from Memphis Depay. Daley Blind plays it into him on the left of the penalty area, he has so much to do but does it superbly. He glides in between two challenges with ease, gets the ball onto his left foot and slots into the corner.

A wonderful goal against his former employers.

"I'm going to try and be kind to Wilfried Bony but I really can't be.

"That is dreadful. Absolutely dreadful. He's not just missed that, it was a good six yards wide. Awful. He must be trying too hard, with Sergio Aguero looking on from the bench."

  109. CLOSE!

Wilfried Bony's Manchester City career in microcosm. A great touch  takes him past the Juventus defence, it's a great chance, just need some composure - he blasts the shot high and wide.
