  1. Post update

Some well-trained by the numbers answers there by Harry Kane.

On that insightful note, it is time to bring our Europa League coverage to an end. Thanks for your company, your comments and your sandwich-related puns (how did we get to that stage?).

    See you next time.

  2. Player reaction

    Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a game of two halves. We dominated in the first and in the second they came out and made it tough.

"Anderlecht are a great team but it was great from Mousa to pull the finish out of the bag and get us the three points.

"It's a very tight group, everyone is beating everyone else, and there is still a lot to do. Qarabag away will be tough and Monaco at home to finish. Hopefully we can win the next one and get the job done."

  3. Manager reaction

    Rubin Kazan 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, on match winner Jordon Ibe: "He is a very good lad, a very skilled player and a really big talent – he is fast, strong, good at dribbling.

“He has a lot to learn, but has a really good base. He feels good at the moment and we could see it tonight. Like everyone, he has to work hard – he is very young and has a long way to go. He has to learn and if he is prepared to listen, everything will be good.”

  4. Elsewhere in Europe

    Aritz Aduriz

Athletic Bilbao were big winners at home to Partizan Belgrade, dispatching the Serbs 5-1 as Aritz Aduriz scored his 100th goal for the club.

Schalke missed out on the chance to secure a place in the knockout stage, held to a 1-1 draw in Sparta Prague.

And Albanian champions Skenderbeu secured their first ever victory in European competition proper, beating Sporting Lisbon no less, 3-0.

  5. Post update

A good night for Premier League teams then as Tottenham and Liverpool both secure wins that put them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage.

Spurs travel to Qarabag in their next game, before hosting Monaco in their final group-stage fixture.

If they beat bottom side Qarabag on 26 November and Monaco defeat Anderlect, Mauricio Pochettino's side will qualify for the knockout stages with a game to spare.

Meanwhile, Liverpool - second in Group B - are next at home to Bordeaux knowing a win will see them progress.

  6. Post update

    Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

"A real hard-fought win for Tottenham. Anderlecht started well and Spurs weathered that, Harry Kane scored a sensational goal and credit to Mauricio Pochettino's side - they came back after conceding the equaliser, too.

"Mousa Dembele's spectacular finish was a fitting goal to win a great game."

  7. FULL-TIME

    Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht

Eric Dier waves to fans at the end of the match

All over and Mousa Dembele's stunning strike seals victory. Tottenham go top of Group J with seven points, one point ahead of Monaco and three ahead of third-place Anderlecht.

  8. Post update

    Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht

Anderlecht coach Besnik Hasi is marching up and down his technical area, shouting at the ground in frustration. This was an opportunity lost for the visitors, who were the better side for much of the game.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane continues to run down the clock in the corner.

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

    Mousa Dembele scores

"What a goal! And there's me saying that's Mousa Dembele's wrong foot. A half-volley with his right foot flies into the top corner. Pick that one out."

  11. Post update

    Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht

Three minutes of added time is shown on the fourth official's board. Three minutes for Tottenham to hold on for an important win. They are on course to go top of Group J as Harry Kane takes the ball into the corner.

  12. GOAL - Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht

    Mousa Dembele

    Mousa Dembele celebrates

Out of nothing, Tottenham lead again! It is a fine goal by Mousa Dembele, who is in a rich run of goalscoring form at the moment.

Substitute Son Heung-min, moments after playing a superb cross-field ball, tees up Dembele on the edge of the area and he launches an unstoppable drive into the back of the net for his third goal in as many games.

  13. Post update

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

Harry Kane sees a shot blocked and Tottenham have a corner. Erik Lamela takes it, but Guillaume Gillet heads clear.

While we've been talking puns, I wonder what Tim Sherwood would have made of Gillet if he was still in the Spurs dugout tonight.

  14. Post update

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

Mousa Dembele shoots from distance, but it is low and weak and no bother for Silvio Proto in the Anderlecht goal.

  15. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

Anderlecht bring on more fresh legs as Ibrahima Conte comes on for Fabrice N'Sakala.

Seven minutes left, Tottenham could really do with a win with two tricky final games coming up, but they are the side doing all the defending at the moment.

  16. Post update

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

Imoh Ezekiel once again causes Tottenham problems, this time springing the offside trap as he chases a ball into the box. Fortunately for Spurs, Toby Alderweireld gets back in time to deflect the forward's shot behind.

Tottenham need to stick two players on Ezekiel, heck three players. If the visitors are to get another goal tonight, you can be sure he will play a big part in it.

    Group J
  17. Post update

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

"Spurs had a 10-minute spell at the beginning of the second half when they were by far the better side. They didn't score though, and will they rue that now?

"They're going to have to work really hard to win this game from here. And that's not ideal before playing Arsenal on Sunday."

  18. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

Final change for Tottenham as 18-year-old midfielder Joshua Onomah comes on for Dele Alli.

  19. Post update

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

Anderlecht are on the front foot now as the lively Imoh Ezekiel gets inside the area before crossing across the face of goal and Jan Vertonghen hacks the ball away, with Stefano Okaka lurking.

  20. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

    Mousa Dembele gives instructions

This should be an entertaining final 15 minutes or so with both sides going for victory now.

Mauricio Pochettino makes his second change of the game as Mousa Dembele replaces Ryan Mason.

  21. Post update

    Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

    Imoh Ezekiel celebrates

"A diagonal pass drifted beyond the Spurs defence, and Imon Ezekiel didn't make the best of contacts on the ball but it squirmed over the line. Anderlecht are back in this tie."

  22. GOAL - Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht

    Imoh Ezekiel

    Imoh Ezekiel celebrates

What an impact! Imoh Ezekiel, with pretty much his first touch, equalises.

Steven Defour sends the ball into the area and Ezekiel makes a brilliant run to cut through the Tottenham defence and poke home.

  23. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Anderlecht make their first change of the game, the hugely impressive 18-year-old Youri Telemans replaced by Imoh Ezekiel.

AndLazioare 2-0 up at Rosenborg - they're six points clear of third in Group G but not through just yet.

  26. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Erik Lamela, new boots on, brings the ball under control with one touch, rolls it away from a marker with his second before launching a shot just wide of the target.

  27. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

"We were right behind that one - a dipping left-foot volley from Ben Davies - what an effort! Anderlecht saved by the width of the crossbar. Silvio Proto the goalkeeper was beaten."

  28. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Ben Davies smacks a dipping effort against the crossbar as Tottenham come forward again. The hosts have control of this game, but could do with a second just to be certain of taking the three points.

  29. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

"Shooooooot," shout the home fans as Erik Lamela squares a pass to Dele Alli, unmarked on the edge of the area, Alli obliges, and his effort is deflected behind for a corner, which Lamela takes and Anderlecht clear.

  30. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

    Son Heung-Min

A welcome sight for Tottenham fans as Son Heung-min, who has been out for a month with a foot injury, comes on, replacing Christian Eriksen.

Huge cheers from the home fans as Son jogs onto the pitch.

  31. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

    Poor from Erik Lamela.

One-on-one on the edge of the box, he tries to shift the ball on to his left foot but falls when the challenge comes in, too easily in my book and the referee's as well as he waves play on.

Lamela then scampers over to the edge of the pitch for a change of boots.

  32. Post update

  33. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

From that corner Anderlecht break forward quickly, with their attack ending with Olivier Deschacht flashing an effort over the bar.

It was never going to trouble Hugo Lloris, but a reminder that Anderlecht are dangerous on the counter.

  36. Post update

    Totttenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Good exchange between Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela sees Tottenham win a corner. Eriksen takes it and Eric Dier almost gets his head on the end of it, but the visitors do just enough to clear.

  37. KICK-OFF

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Away we go then for another 45 minutes of Europa League goodness. No changes for either side as Anderlecht get the second half under way.

Athletic Bilbao are cruising at home to Partizan Belgrade, Benat Etxebarria making it 3-1 before the break.

Albanian side Skenderbeu are well on course for their first victory in European competition proper - they lead 10-man Sporting Lisbon 2-0.

And Schalke have come back from a goal down at Sparta Prague for 1-1 at half-time. Victory would send the Germans into the knockout stage.

  41. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

"Tottenham didn't want that half-time whistle to come. The game's been relentless. Anderlecht played their part in the first 15 minutes but Spurs worked their way into the game and the goal came at a crucial time.

"It was a sensational finish by Harry Kane."

  42. HALF-TIME

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

So far so good for Tottenham as they lead at the break. Deservedly so too, having grown into the game.

    .
  43. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Tottenham are definitely finishing this half as the side on top, with Anderlecht a shadow of the side they were before Harry Kane's goal.

One minute of added time, and Spurs look on target take a 1-0 lead into the break.

  45. YELLOW CARD

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

First yellow of the game as Fabrice N'Sakala  fouls Dele Alli and Tottenham have a free-kick midway inside the Anderlecht half.

Erik Lamela takes it and although the visitors clear, Spurs pick up the ball again through Ali, whose cross is headed at goal by Harry Kane but it lacks power and Silvio Proto holds.

  46. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

Excellent ball by Eric Dier from midway inside the Anderlecht half finds Harry Kane inside the area. Kane has his back to goal and seeing that he has three players around him, tries to hoodwink his markers with a backheel for Erik Lamela. Instead, he stands on the ball and it dribbles to an Anderlecht player.

  47. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

As things stand Tottenham are top of Group J with seven points, with Monaco second on six.

The goal certainly seems to have knocked Anderlecht back a bit. Their fast and direct football is MIA at the moment. Can Tottenham take advantage and grab another?

  48. Post update

    Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

    Tottenham players celebrate

"A month ago, Harry Kane would have taken an extra touch, but not now. Boom! Bottom corner.

"Tottenham caught Anderlecht out with a quickly taken free-kick - and the Belgians actually had a player off the pitch wanting to come back on after treatment."

  49. GOAL - Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht

    Harry Kane

    Harry Kane scores

Tottenham, with their first real chance on goal, take the lead and it is a fine finish by Harry Kane.

The visitors are momentarily down to 10 men as Stefano Okaka is off the pitch after receiving treatment and Spurs take full advantage, Christian Eriksen rolling the ball to Kane, who fires home on the turn.

  50. Elsewhere in Europe

There's a bit of a shock brewing in Albania, where Skenderbeu have gone 2-0 up on Sporting Lisbon, who have had their goalkeeper sent off.  Victory would be Skenderbeu's first in European competition proper.

And Schalke have clipped back Sparta Prague's early lead from the penalty spot, reclaiming the Group K top spot in the process.

    Schalek
  51. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

Stefano Okaka is real handful. He receives a pass from Frank Acheampong and, with his back to goal, brushes off Jan Vertonghen but sees his shot charged down by Ryan Mason.

Twenty five minutes in and Vertonghen is drenched in sweat. The Spurs defence is being given a real workout.

  52. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

Better from Tottenham as Erik Lamela breezes through the Anderlecht defence and into the middle of the area, but flicks a effort with the outside of his boot wide.

  53. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

    Harry Kan

Tottenham are yet to really get going and are giving away a few too many niggly fouls, but there's a better moment when a corner is played short by Erik Lamela to Harry Kane, who wriggles through two defenders but his shot is charged down before Kieran Trippier shoots well over.

"We just had a glimpse of Youri Tielemans' potential, too. That is why he is so highly thought of. Hugo Lloris probably had it covered though."

  56. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

Another chance for the visitors as Youri Tielemans plays a one-two with Stefano Okaka before the former's low drive fizzes just wide of the post.

Anderlecht look very good at the moment, fast and direct, and are giving Tottenham plenty to think about.

  57. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

    Bradley Allen

Former QPR striker on BBC Radio London

    Stefano Okaka runs with possession

"From the way Anderlecht have started you can see they realise the state of the group - victory for them would put them in such a great position.

"But if they go too far on the attack and play becomes open, that will work more in Spurs' favour."

  58. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

Jan Vertonghen nips in to win possession out wide and does well to squeeze in a cross that Harry Kane touches on inside the area, but he can't find a fellow Tottenham player as Anderlecht clear.

A better moment from Spurs, who have had a fair bit of defending to do in these early stages.

  59. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

Tottenham have Harry Kane operating as the sole striker tonight, with Dele Alli operating just behind in the number 10 role.

Eric Dier, who was today called up to the senior England squad for the first time, is playing deep in midfield alongside Ryan Mason.

  60. Post update

Tottenham respond immediately as Kieran Trippier whips in a teasing cross from the right aimed at Harry Kane, but Serigne Mbodji is there to thump the ball behind for a corner.

    Good start to this game.

  63. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Anderlecht

Anderlecht are straight on the attack through Stefano Okaka, who shows good strength to get forward and into the area but Jan Vertonghen gets an important tackle in. It looks like Okaka is going to be a real handful for the Spurs defence.

It is goals, goals and goals at Napoli, where the home side now lead Midtjylland of Denmark 4-0, Christian Maggio with the latest. Victory will send the Italians through to the knockout stage.

Borussia Dortmund are 2-0 up at home to Qabala and can also go through tonight if fellow Group C side Krasnodar win as well. So far it's looking good for Jurgen Klopp's former club.

And in the other game in Liverpool's group, Sion and Bordeaux are locked in at 0-0.

  92. Post update

    Rubin Kazan 0-1 Liverpool

A rare sight in this game as Rubin Kazan race towards the Liverpool area, a cross comes in but Mamadou Sakho is there to head away.

Moments later, Liverpool attack again as a corner comes through to Emre Can and his shot through a crowd is straight at the keeper.

  93. SUBSTITUTION

    Rubin Kazan 0-1 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp makes his first change of the game, replacing James Milner with another midfielder in the shape of Adam Lallana.

  94. CLOSE!

    Rubin Kazan 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool are bossing this now as Dejan Lovren sees an effort well saved by Sergei Ryzhikov.

Jordon Ibe curls a corner into the middle of the area and Lovren stoops to direct a header on target, but too close to the Rubin Kazan keeper.

  95. Post update

    Rubin Kazan 0-1 Liverpool

As it stands, Liverpool remain second in Group B but have six points, three more than Bordeaux who are the Reds' next opponents. Win that game, and Liverpool are through to the knockout stage.

Meanwhile, confidence is flowing through the Liverpool players now as James Milner's powerful effort is tipped over.

  96. GOAL - Rubin Kazan 0-1 Liverpool

    Jordon Ibe

    Jordon Ibe scores

The breakthrough! And it is a lovely finish. Jordon Ibe receives the ball midway inside the Rubin Kazan half and he sets off on his way towards the area before shooting low into the far corner. That's his first goal for Liverpool, and a fine one it is too.

    Jordon Ibe celebrates
  97. Post update

    Rubin Kazan 0-0 Liverpool

Some smart passing on the edge of the area ends with Joe Allen almost put through on goal, but a well-timed last-ditch challenge denies the midfielder the chance to get a shot off on goal.

  98. CLOSE!

    Rubin Kazan 0-0 Liverpool

Early chance for Liverpool as a cross from wide travels through to the unmarked Alberto Moreno and his shot is deflected behind for a corner. Moreno takes it but frankly its rubbish - high and beyond his team-mates - and the opportunity is wasted.

  99. KICK-OFF

    Rubin Kazan 0-0 Liverpool

Midfielder Magomed Ozdoev jogs on for Carlos Eduardo for the hosts as the second half gets under way.

  100. Post update

    Rubin Kazan 0-0 Liverpool

No shots on target for either side in the first half. Liverpool, who had 76%, had 12 attempts on goal, but Jurgen Klopp will be wanting his players to trouble the goalkeeper more in the second half.

  101. Elsewhere in Europe

Borussia Dortmund doubled their lead over Qabala just before the break, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang adding to Marco Reus' earlier strike.

If scores stay the same, Jurgen Klopp's former club will be heading into the last 32, as fellow Group C side Krasnodar are also winning.

Napoli are surely set for the knockout stage too - they lead Midtjylland 3-0 now and a win sends them through.

And in the other game in Liverpool's group Sion and Bordeaux are still level at 0-0.

Three changes for Tottenham as Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies and Ryan Mason come into the side. Andros Townsend, as expected, misses out after clashing with Spurs fitness coach Nathan Gardiner.

Townsend was an unused substitute in Monday's win over Aston Villa and was pictured pushing and arguing with Gardiner on the pitch after the game.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Alli, Dier, Lamela, Mason, Eriksen, Kane. Subs: Vorm, Fazio, Wimmer, Carroll, Dembele, Onomah, Son

    Emre Can tries to score

So close for Liverpool as goalkeeper Sergei Ryzhikov does superbly to react to a poor defensive header from his own player, Solomon Kverkvelia, before clawing the ball away to safety.

Ryzhikov did really well. He had little time to react to what was a bullet header from Kverkvelia, who was trying to head away a cross.

Emre Can lets fly from distance, the sting from his effort taken out by a Rubin Kazan defender and the ball bobbles slowly to the home keeper, who just gets there ahead of the alert Roberto Firmino.

Marco Reus is on target for Borussia Dortmund - they've just taken the lead at home to Qabala of Azerbaijan.

Jurgen Klopp's former club can secure progress to the knockout stages if both they and fellow Group C side Krasnodar win tonight.

Meanwhile, Napoli are cruising 2-0 at home to Midtjylland and it's still 0-0 in the other game in Liverpool's group, between Sion and Bordeaux.

    Christian Benteke looks dejected

There's about 60 Rubin Kazan defenders in their own area, but still Christian Benteke manages to get to a ball.

His first touch sees him flick the ball high into the air and he then shapes up to volley it, only for Joe Allen to distract him as the midfielder runs in to try and claim. Chance gone and Benteke is furious with his team-mate.

    Rubin Kazan 0-0 Liverpool

Rubin Kazan feature players in their side with the squad numbers 61, 77, 88 and 99. Sad times.

That is just about the only observation I can give about them at the moment. They have been very defensive, barely getting into the Liverpool half and look more like the away team.

  114. Elsewhere in Europe

In the other match in Liverpool's group, Sion are drawing 0-0 with Bordeaux. A win for the home side would see them go through to the next round.

Meanwhile in Group D, Napoli are already 2-0 up over FC Midtjylland of Denmark - victory would secure the Italians' place in the knockout stages.

And earlier today, Qarabag and Monaco shared a 1-1 draw in the other game in Tottenham's group.

Liverpool, as an attacking unit, look impressive. When they get forward there are always three players in support of Christian Benteke.

Liverpool are firmly on top, dominating the possession stats with 69% but while they have had a couple of chances they've been nothing to really threaten Sergi Ryzhikov in the Rubin goal.

Jurgen Klopp's efforts to make his first signing as Liverpool boss were scuppered today, by Championship side Huddersfield.

Klopp was apparently keen to make David Wagner, his right-hand man at Borussia Dortmund and best man at his wedding, his assistant at Liverpool.

However, Wagner has instead opted to dip his toes in managerial waters, instead becoming head coach at the Terriers.

That's not him pictured above, by the way. That's Wagner from the X Factor, included solely so that I can make some sort of reference to him bringing the X Factor to Huddersfield.

A win in Kazan, coupled with Bordeaux's failure to beat Sion, would mean victory at home to Bordeaux later this month would seal Liverpool's place in the knockout stage with a game to spare.

A draw tonight though, would probably be a more realistic result for the Reds, with Rubin having not lost at home to an English side in three matches, beating Wigan, Chelsea and Tottenham by one-goal margins.

BBC sports editor Dan Roan this week sat down with Cristiano Ronaldo, who was in a modest mood.

"I don't need to say 'I'm in the history of football, I'm a legend'. The numbers say everything," he says.

Asked about comparisons with Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi, Ronaldo said: "It's opinions, I respect the opinions. Maybe in your opinion Messi is better than me, but in my mind I am better than him. So it's simple."

    Boots

A fascinating Europa League story developing with Braga, who are due to kick off against Marseille at 18:00, apparently having had all their football boots stolen.

With each player's boots having different sponsors, they cannot go out and by a load of new ones and be seen wearing boots made by rival sponsors, so have to get the same ones, otherwise they wouldn't be able to play.

Braga, one of three teams to have maximum points so far, must fulfil the fixture or face disqualification from the competition or a fine.

Both line-ups for the game have been announced, so it would look like it is going ahead. We wait and see...

    Jurgen Klopp

Right then, back to my opening entry and, more specifically, the bit about Jurgen Klopp not liking the phrase "heavy-metal football".

Prior to a Champions League game against Arsenal in 2013, Klopp referred to the football played by Arsene Wenger's side as being like "a silent song", adding that he liked "heavy metal" more.

It is a quote, like many he has said, that has followed Klopp around, and when asked about it ahead of today's Europa League game, he said: "The problem with my life is that I've said too much s**t in the past and no-one forgets it."

Sorry Jurgen, we love your Kloppisms, so much so that I'm going to liberally sprinkle a few of them on this page in the build up to this evening's game.

    Fireworks

Forget Bonfire Night - it is raining anyway - Thursday night is all about one thing, and one thing only - the Europa League.

OK, it's a competition that is probably not everyone's cup of tea but with a place in next season's Champions League the ultimate prize, many clubs are taking it that bit more seriously these days - including Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp has taken his strongest available side on the 3,300km trip east to face Rubin Kazan as he looks to record Liverpool's first win in the competition that would strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

In fact, the team is in, so let's see who makes Klopp's first XI...

  148. Klopp keen to change the record

    Jurgen Klopp

Five games, three draws and two wins - the latest a 3-1 win at Chelsea. It is fair to say that is so far so good for Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

The football is improving, youngsters are getting the chance to shine and not every game is ending 1-1. Klopp is starting to stamp his style on the club.

Whatever you do, though, don't refer to that style as "heavy-metal football". Klopp doesn't like that.

Regardless, the Reds will need to hit the right note tonight...
