Louis van Gaal will enjoy a cold beer tonight as United move up to second in the league after a brilliant comeback. It looks like being a Manchester battle for the title this year.

At the start of the season, manager Louis van Gaal said his Manchester United side can't challenge for the title, but does this win change thing?

"We shall always strive for it but you can't expect a team in transition already to win a title. But when we are close. we shall grab it," he said.

The League Cup returns this week with third round action. Southampton travels to MK Dons, while Manchester United host Ipswich. Both games are on Wednesday 23 September and a chance to pick up some silverware for both Dutch managers.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman on Sky Sports: “The first 30 minutes we played perfectly, we had good organisation and they had difficulties breaking us. We lost it a bit 10 minutes before half time. In the second half, if you make that kind of mistake it is impossible. 

"We lost belief. The reaction after 3-2 was good and we had enough chances but David De Gea made some good saves. We didn’t lose by Manchester United, we lost by ourselves.

“From Jose Fonte’s header it was a great save. From Victor Wanyama too but we know David De Gea is a good goalkeeper.

“We can play good football when we have control. It is all about belief. Making mistakes is a part of football but we have to continue. There have been a lot of changes in the game but we are still strong.”

We know in the Premier League it is never finished and have to be careful until the end. We were in control and it happened against Swansea and PSV. We need to learn quickly again. The manager reminded us this week that if we are leading and in control, then we have to keep our shape. It was strange to go into the away dressing room at the start but I had to stay focused.

The Japanese defender, without looking, tries to give a backpass to Maarten Stekelenburg, but fails to see Anthony Martial gambling.

Remember what I said earlier about the little Frenchman being cool, calm and collected in front of goal? He was just that once again, waiting for the Dutch stopper to go down, before rolling into the corner.

Quite a stat.

Anthony Martial has become the third player to score on his first two Premier League appearances for Man United, after Louis Saha in 2004 and Federico Macheda in 2009.

Will Martial last longer than Macheda? He's trying to get the better of Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk at the moment. A little and large combination.

Meanwhile at Anfield, it's a stalemate. And not the exciting kind. 

Probably the most exciting moment of a goalless first half came when Daniel Sturridge saw a stinging left-footed shot palmed away by John Ruddy in the Norwich goal. In truth it was a comfortable save.

Christian Benteke and Sturridge, making his first appearance for Liverpool since undergoing hip surgery in May, haven't shown much sign of forming a scintillating partnership. So far.

HALF-TIME

All square at half time. A very watchable match.

Matt Targett back on, no lasting damage. Those Southampton players were looking bright early on, but haven't been able to do much in the last 10 minutes of this half.

Anthony Martial starting to cause a few problems now, using his pace to get on the end of a ball from Juan Mata. Left-back Matt Targett was caught in the face there from the Frenchman, so there is a break in play while he recovers.

A lot of passes involved in that United equaliser, some poor defending from Southampton as well, and a neat finish from Anthony Martial (number nine).

Nicely poised this game now, the goal has knocked the stuffing out of Southampton and they are just dropping a little bit deeper in order to get through to half time.

United will be much the happier side if it stays like this until the interval.

A new Red Devils hero has arrived. You can see why people make the Thierry Henry comparisons, he's got ice running through his veins inside the penalty area. So cool, calm and collected.

To be honest, United didn't deserve that, but that's four goals from their last four shots on target. Clinical stuff.

It's that lad again! Southampton make a hash of clearing the ball and it eventually played to Juan Mata through on goal, but he's tackled.

The ball rolls nicely for Anthony Martial, who turns Virgil van Dijk inside out, before calmly finishing.

Where's the money gone?

"Liverpool are rushing Daniel Sturridge back and Manchester United with Anthony Martial are force-feeling a 19-year-old into a really pressured situation after spending goodness knows how much money.

"They are spending a lot of money and where's it all gone. They have spent all that money and are still chasing players and it should be all done."

Again, Wayne Rooney gets a pass wrong and United have to retreat before starting a move again. The visitors have not tested Maarten Stekelenburg yet. The Dutchman has had an easy afternoon so far.

PENALTY APPEAL

Just looking at a replay from the last incident, Marcos Rojo seems to barge Dusan Tadic inside the area, but the referee waved away claims for a penalty.

It could have been given.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama go into each other while sliding for a 50-50 ball. No fuss from either player, both just get up and carried on.

Striker Graziano Pelle is giving Daley Blind a torrid time, this time nicking the ball to feed Sadio Mane, who can't find Dusan Tadic with a pull back.

This Southampton side haven't conceded in their last three games so you have to take every opportunity that comes your way.
