  1. Goodbye

    Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal will enjoy a cold beer tonight as United move up to second in the league after a brilliant comeback. It looks like being a Manchester battle for the title this year.

Have a read of Tom Rostance's report of the game.

  2. Title challenge for United?

    Southampton 2-3 Man Utd

At the start of the season, manager Louis van Gaal said his Manchester United side can't challenge for the title, but does this win change thing?

"We shall always strive for it but you can't expect a team in transition already to win a title. But when we are close. we shall grab it," he said.

Louis van Gaal and Wayne Rooney
  3. What's next for the two sides?

The League Cup returns this week with third round action. Southampton travels to MK Dons, while Manchester United host Ipswich. Both games are on Wednesday 23 September and a chance to pick up some silverware for both Dutch managers.

    Southampton 2-3 Man Utd

Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal on BBC Sport: "It was very important after the PSV Eindhoven game. I have to make a lot of compliments to my players.

"Anthony Martial is already special because we paid a lot of money for him. A lot of people are thinking he is a gerat star but he is a boy of 19. In three matches he has shown a lot.

"I am very happy with him but we and he have to keep our feet on the ground.

"That is why we were difficult in the transfer window. I have always said we wanted to keep David De Gea."

  9. 'Mistakes cost us'

    Southampton 2-3 Man Utd

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman on Sky Sports: “The first 30 minutes we played perfectly, we had good organisation and they had difficulties breaking us. We lost it a bit 10 minutes before half time. In the second half, if you make that kind of mistake it is impossible.

"We lost belief. The reaction after 3-2 was good and we had enough chances but David De Gea made some good saves. We didn’t lose by Manchester United, we lost by ourselves.

“From Jose Fonte’s header it was a great save. From Victor Wanyama too but we know David De Gea is a good goalkeeper.

“We can play good football when we have control. It is all about belief. Making mistakes is a part of football but we have to continue. There have been a lot of changes in the game but we are still strong.”

"Southampton will be kicking themselves. I don't think they have asked enough questions of Manchester United. They showed near the end how suspect Manchester United can be but allowed them to dictate for long periods.

United have to thank goalkeeper David De Gea who kept them in the game with some crucial save. That reported £200,000 a week contract is worth every penny at the moment.

As is the initial £36m fee paid for Anthony Martial. Two well-taken goals by the Frenchman today.

Probably the most exciting moment of a goalless first half came when Daniel Sturridge saw a stinging left-footed shot palmed away by John Ruddy in the Norwich goal. In truth it was a comfortable save.

Christian Benteke and Sturridge, making his first appearance for Liverpool since undergoing hip surgery in May, haven't shown much sign of forming a scintillating partnership. So far.

Dusan Tadic pulling the strings for Southampton and the home side are in the mood.

James Ward-Prowse with a first time outside-of-the-foot effort from the edge of the area but straight into the bread basket of David De Gea. Taken comfortably like a slip fielder.

Nothing from Wayne Rooney so far, apart from a foul on a Southampton man. He has a word with referee Mark Clattenburg.

Rooney's last Premier League goal was back in April - while his last league goal away from home was at Arsenal last November!

Anthony Martial with his first sniff at goal, spinning at the edge of the Southampton area, but his shot is wild and into the stands. He had more time there and could have taken the ball on.

Shocking defending and United get away with one. Superb play from big man Graziano Pelle to turn Daley Blind on the edge of the area, before getting a low shot away that strikes the bottom of the post.

Southampton can get at United here, their defence is looking very shaky early on in this game.

    Graziano Pelle (12 mins)

    It was coming!

Great move from Southampton as Sadio Mane and James Ward-Prowse exchange passes. The Englishman then finds his team-mate in the box, who shoots but David De Gea makes a brilliant reflex save.

The ball falls kindly forGraziano Pelleeight yards out, bang in front of goal and the Italian makes no mistake. St Mary's erupts, but where was the United defence?

First effort on goal. Smart build up from the home side as Graziano Pelle outmuscles Daley Blind to get the ball.

It eventually reaches Serbian Dusan Tadic, who drags side shot wide of goal.

Big Pelle getting the better of little Blind early on. A sign of things to come?

Juan Mata with a long punt forward towards Anthony Martial, but the Frenchman is never going to win that against the tall, strong Dutchman Virgil van Dijk.

No chances yet for either side. United playing their possession game.

Steady start from United, but neither Wayne Rooney nor Anthony Martial have been able to get on the ball yet.

Sadio Mane, with an extravagant haircut, makes his first foray forward for the home side which comes to nothing.

I wouldn't be able to pull that one off, shaved round the sides with a blond strip through the middle. My mum wouldn't let me into the house.

Southampton right-back for the day Maya Yoshida and United full-back Marcos Rojo will be happy to be in their positions today as a wide shadow from the stadium roofing is providing shade for them in the sun.

Morgan Schneiderlin on the ball for the away side, but no boos from the crowd which is good to see.

"Wayne Rooney wanted to play earlier but we didn't take the risk and Anthony Martial plays like a striker and is always a threat for the defence."
