    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Right, that's Jurgen Klopp's first game as Liverpool manager done and dusted. Both teams worked hard and, ultimately, cancelled each other out. A draw was probably a fair result.

  2. 'Klopp's approach today has been spot on'

    Garth Crooks

Former Spurs striker on Final Score

"Klopp's approach today has been spot on. He is charismatic, effervescent and an innovator, but today he displayed calm and caution. Nothing flash, just getting the job done. Liverpool are going home and can build on this."

  3. 'Klopp has been brought in to break dominance'

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

    Garth Crooks

Former Spurs striker on Final Score

"Klopp has been brought in by Liverpool to try and break dominance at the top of the league. There are actually very few managers who can do that, but of course Howard Kendall was one of them."

"Tottenham probably edged it. Liverpool were excellent in the first 20 minutes but since then Spurs have been the better the side and they would have deserved a win - just about.

"I'm sure Jurgen Klopp will be more than delighted with a clean sheet away to Tottenham in his first game."

This is a chance, then, but the Reds waste it. Alberto Moreno drills his shot straight at the wall.

  7. INJURY TIME

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

There will be three minutes of added time at White Hart Lane. Is there a goal in this game? Maybe - Liverpool have a free-kick right on the edge of the box after Dele Alli fouls James Milner.

  8. CLOSE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Just as I was about to say this game is petering out, Emre Can lets fly with a snap-shot from the edge of the area. It fizzes a fraction wide. to the frustration of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

  13. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

There have not been many clear chances in this second half but Spurs have just created one, with Christian Eriksen teeing up Harry Kane on the edge of the area. Again Reds keeper Simon Mignolet is there, springing to his left to push the ball away.

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Spurs have been under a bit of pressure but Harry Kane has just helped them win their first corner of the second half.

It is cleared easily as far as Kyle Walker, whose shot from distance clears the bar by, erm, quite a distance. If that was me, I'd be blaming that knock he just picked up...

Liverpool's James Milner does well to nip in and win possession by the half-way line but Tottenham's Moussa Dembele does even better to get back and nick the ball back from Divock Origi on the edge of the area. More evidence of the impressive work-rate from both teams, but it is not going to bring us a goal.

We pass the hour mark with this game still goalless. I don't think we are at the stage where either team would settle for a point, but they are both keeping things pretty tight at the moment.

  29. YELLOW CARD

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Some lovely intricate stuff from Liverpool on the edge of their own area just now but this game has been more about blood and thunder, and the challenges continue to fly in. Erik Lamela is the latest player to go in Craig Pawson's book, after lunging in on Alberto Moreno.

  30. Post update

A couple of shots from distance - first a daisy-cutter from Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho, and then a palm-stinger from Kyle Walker at the other end. It was still a routine stop for Simon Mignolet though.

  31. Post update

Shades of Sunday League here: Liverpool are on the attack but Adam Lallana was not expecting a throw from Alberto Moreno to come in his direction near the left-hand corner flag and can do little more than let it bounce off him. When it goes out of play he lets Moreno know exactly know what he thinks... and he wasn't happy.

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight games and it is looking like a big ask for them to manage one today. Spurs are stepping up the pressure and keeping them pinned back in their own half. Jurgen Klopp would approve, but he won't be enjoying watching it.

  33. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Another sniff for Spurs as Christian Eriksen bends a free-kick in from out on the left. Toby Alderweireld tries to get on the end of it but it bounces through to Simon Mignolet.

  34. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

After a quick break while James Milner gets treatment for an injury, some sloppy stuff from Liverpool in defence as Emre Can gives the ball away on the edge of his own area.

Christian Eriksen picks it up and Spurs have men over, but his lifted pass is not precise enough to pick any of them out.

  35. KICK-OFF

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Spurs get the second half started. No changes from either manager at the break.

  36. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Tottenham came back into the game in the last 20 minutes of the first half - as well as those chances, they were seeing more of the ball before the interval, as shown by the graphic below.

I wonder what Jurgen Klopp had to say about it at half-time?

    balance ht
  37. HALF-TIME

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at White Hart Lane

Good first half. Jurgen Klopp will be pleased at how Liverpool have clearly tried to implement his "gegenpressing" (high pressing basically) style but might be a little less satidfied at a lack of high quality. He has also been unimpressed with how Liverpool have been setting up to defend corners - a few of the coaching staff left over from the Brendan Rodgers era have been getting it in the ear over that.

  38. 'I can't wait for the second half to start'

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

    Danny Murphy

Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"A thoroughly enjoyable first half - there wasn't a moment to breathe. There was commitment and tenacity, and both managers will be reasonably happy because both sides enjoyed good spells.

"I can't wait for the second half to start."

  39. HALF-TIME

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

A clap of the hands from Jurgen Klopp as he departs down the tunnel. I expect he will give Simon Mignolet a slap on the back for his saves in the first half when he gets back to the Liverpool dressing room.

  40. INJURY TIME

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

There will be two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half. Plenty of positives for Jurgen Klopp to begin with, and his Liverpool side have gone closest to scoring, but Spurs will feel they should be in front based on the number of chances created.

  41. 'Tottenham are a very good footballing side'

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

    Danny Murphy

Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"The intensity Liverpool started with is very hard to keep going. Tottenham are a very good footballing side themselves, and it was only a matter of time until they got themselves back into the game.

"I'm amazed we haven't seen a goal yet..."

  42. Post update

Another Spurs chance. Dele Alli fires in a low cross from the right and Harry Kane is at the near post but so, crucially, is Martin Skrtel for Liverpool.

Five minutes to go until half-time, and more evidence of the size of the job on Jurgen Klopp's hands. Clinton N'Jie makes the most of a mix-up between Martin Skrtel and Nathaniel Clyne and darts towards the edge of the area before smashing in a shot that fizzes just over the bar.

  46. 'I expected to see the net ripple'

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

    Danny Murphy

Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"Great chances for Spurs, but brilliant defending from Sakho to block the follow-up attempt. Talk about putting your body on the line.

"I expected to see the net ripple once the ball fell to Dele Alli. He perhaps needed a bit more guile, to place it rather than opting to put his laces through it."

  47. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

They started slowly but Spurs are looking more dangerous at the moment, and Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet has just made another very good stop.

Nathaniel Clyne's tackle only diverts the ball into Harry Kane's path but his low shot is kept out by Mignolet's legs. Dele Alli is first to the rebound but Mamadou Sakho throws himself in the way of his shot and Jurgen Klopp breathes again - his team got away with one there.

  48. YELLOW CARD

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

James Milner is having a decent battle with Danny Rose down the Liverpool right but he has caught the Spurs left-back one too many times for referee Craig Pawson. Milner becomes the first player to go into his book.

  49. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

The closest we have come to a Liverpool goal so far was from a James Milner corner... and they threaten again by the same route here - this time Martin Skrtel gets on the end of it at the far post but his header is hacked clear by Harry Kane.

  50. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

More signs that Spurs are coming to life as Christian Eriksen almost threads a ball through to Harry Kane. Eriksen put just a little bit too much on his pass - down to one spoonful too many of porridge this morning, perhaps?

Liverpool are not sitting back though - I don't think that is the done thing under Klopp is it? - and Divock Origi is almost set free at the other end, with the Belgian only denied by a swift interception by sweeper-keeper Hugo Lloris.

"What a save by Simon Mignolet, absolutely brilliant finger-tip stop.It came from a give-away in midfield by Adam Lallana though. If you encourage your players to play out from the back you have to accept that sometimes there will be mistakes."

  52. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

I was going to say Liverpool were looking the same, but a stray pass by Adam Lallana almost changed all that. Harry Kane pounced and then fed Clinton N'Jie, running into the right-hand side of the area, and only a superb reflex save by Simon Mignolet saved Lallana's blushes.

Tottenham striker Clinton Njie shoots towards goal
  53. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

It is possible Mauricio Pochettino's mood might improve as this game goes on - Liverpool's latest attempts to break forward have all been snuffed out pretty easily.

Tottenham have only conceded seven goals in their first eight league games, so this is not a defence which is easily breached.

  54. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at White Hart Lane

Jurgen Klopp is clearly very pleased with a lot of what he is seeing from his new Liverpool side - it is not difficult to work out how Herr Klopp is feeling. His body language tells you all you need to know.

He is happy with how Liverpool are taking on board his insistence on harrassing Spurs at every turn. The question is can they maintain it for 90 minutes?

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, in contrast, is a picture of frustration. They cannot get a foothold in this game.

The graphic below gives you an idea how rarely Spurs have got in the final third of the pitch in the first 20 minutes or so. The visitors are shading possession but it is fair to say that both sides are competing for possession very keenly in the centre of midfield, which is extremely congested.

Tottenham are yet to get inside the Liverpool area or have a shot at goal, although Clinton N'Jie just brought Simon Mignolet rushing out of his box to beat Christian Eriksen to a through-ball. Spurs then won a free-kick by the left-hand corner flag, but it was easily cleared.

On his first week in charge: "It was a little bit of a strange situation; normally you won’t change a manager with 12 points. But yeah, there is enough confidence, it is not a very easy situation, but when we are together we only work. We only had three exercises together, but for the moment it’s enough. We want to be active, to show we are ready to change a little bit. We still have to work a little longer together but we have to take the shape we are in today, it’s not a problem."

On Daniel Sturridge’s injury:"It was only a little contact with Jordon Ibe in training and there is a little bit of swelling so we don’t want to risk it. There is no problem, we have a striker, and we can change it."

  81. 'A very positive start to the season for Spurs'

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

    Danny Murphy

Ex-Liverpool midfielder at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

"Moussa Dembele is back in the midfield thanks to injuries, and he will have a point to overripe. And it'll be exciting to see Dele Alli in the flesh, after his exploits with England.

"I hope too that Erik Lamela will start gaining confidence from being regularly in the team.

"But if Harry Kane gets an injury, there isn't really anyone to come in who's anything like the same quality, But overall it has been a very positive start to the season for Spurs, and this will b a very tough afternoon for Liverpool."

  83. "A miracle-worker is needed"

    Tottenham v LIverpool (12:45 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Tony Evans, the football editor of The Times

"A miracle-worker is needed for that squad. There are patches all across it that needs strengthening, and there have been recruitment problems at that club for such a long time.

"Under Rodgers I'm not sure there was anyone at Liverpool who could spot a good player - let's hope Klopp can."

  84. "Liverpool's problems are at the back"

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

    Danny Murphy

Ex-Liverpool midfielder at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

"Liverpool's creative players could thrive under Klopp. His Dortmund side were attacking, had flair and scored goals.

"What is fascinating for me is what formation he will use - he could leave the team as it has been, playing three at the back with two wide midfielders.

"This Liverpool squad is full of flair, but the problems are at the back. The keeper is not good enough and the defenders are too erratic. It's a cruial area he will need to address, not the Reds' quality in the final third."

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at White Hart Lane

Having watched his Liverpool players warm up from the centre-circle, Jurgen Klopp has now turned his back on them and is studying the Spurs warm-up just as intently.

  86. Liverpool team news

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

Here it is then, Jurgen Klopp's much-anticipated first line-up as Liverpool boss, and it contains one big surprise.

We knew Danny Ings and Christian Benteke were injured, but fellow striker Daniel Sturridge also fails to make the Reds squad after tweaking his knee in a collision in training yesterday, which is why Divock Origi leads their attack at White Hart Lane.

Adam Lallana also comes into the team for his first league start since mid-August. There are three teenagers on the bench.

Starting XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Lucas, Milner, Lallana, Coutinho, Origi

Subs: Bogdan, Toure, Allen, Ibe, Sinclair, Teixeira, Randall

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson

    Former Liverpool defender

Speaking of predictions, this is what Lawro thinks will happen today...

"Spurs are the better team at the moment and will think they have a good chance of ruining Klopp's party. I see it being a draw, but the really interesting thing for me is how Klopp will set his team up."

  89. Howard Kendall dies

Some sad news concerning a legendary Merseyside manager today, with the death of former Everton boss Howard Kendall at the age of 69.

Kendall was Toffees manager when they won two league titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup-Winners Cup in the 1980s, dominating English football along with Liverpool in what was known as the "Merseyside Monopoly".

The tributes have been pouring in for Kendall from across the world of football and you can read them here.

  90. A winning start for Klopp?

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

Not many of his predecessors as Reds boss have managed it...

  91. In-form Spurs

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

And while Klopp is the name on everyone's lips today, it is Pochettino who has taken his team to near the top of the Premier League form table.

Spurs smashed Manchester City 4-1 in their last home game, and have not been beaten in the league since the opening day of the season, when they were a bit unlucky to lose 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford through Kyle Walker's own-goal.

Harry Kane is scoring again too. Add it all up and it safe to say a very tough test awaits Klopp as he kicks off his Reds reign.

  92. Because Tottenham will be...

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

Hang on a minute, though, because Liverpool are not the only team in action in north London today with a manager who gets his team playing a high-tempo, high-pressing style...

    Mauricio Pochettino

Yep Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino also believes that the best time to win the ball back is just after you have lost it, although he says his approach is not quite the same.

"It is a different style of pressing," he said. "If you analyse Dortmund, it's not similar to how we played at Southampton. Our pressing was to the opposing goalkeeper, whereas Dortmund played with a medium block."

  93. Here comes the 'normal one'

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

Yes, after all the hype and amid huge levels of excitement in the red-half of Merseyside and football hipsters everywhere, a 48-year-old self-proclaimed 'normal' guy from Stuttgart, Germany, will bring his brand of 'gegenpressing' (also known as heavy metal) football to the Premier League for the first time this afternoon when his side step out at White Hart Lane.

    Are you ready?

  94. A new era

    Tottenham v Liverpool (12:45 BST)

Now then, I am guessing some of you are reading this because you have heard that Liverpool have got a new manager, and that he is about to take charge of his first game.

Some of you may even have tracked his plane when he flew to Merseyside to accept the job, but I assume you all know who he is... ?
