No consolation either, as Ross Barkley shoots over. A comfortable victory for Manchester United at Goodison Park.

  3. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Great run from Anthony Martial, whose ball into the box doesn't quite fall for substitute Jesse Lingard.

  6. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Jaap Stam, then Ryan Giggs and now the Manchester United fans sign about Cristiano Ronaldo. They've had a happy trip to Goodison Park today. It makes a change after precisely zero goals and three defeats in their last three trips here.

  7. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

This match is petering out to its conclusion. United happy to keep the ball and stroke it around, while Everton have no urgency in getting it back. Six to play.

  8. SUBSTITUTION

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Ander Herrera's impressive afternoon has run its course. He gets a well deserved breather and former Evertonian Marouane Fellaini jogs on.

  9. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Ross Barkley fires a free-kick which skims the top of the net.

  10. CLOSE!

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Almost a fourth for Manchester United. The diminutive Anthony Martial wriggles away like a slippery snake, but his attempt at a cheeky near-post finish is kept out by Tim Howard.

  11. 'Everton have been caught out today'

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Everton can't string much together, no matter how hard they try. They have played better in this second half but in midfield they have been caught out today."

  12. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Jesse Lingard shoots wide from the edge of the box. Saw the lights, they quickly went off though.

  13. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

  14. SUBSTITUTION

Louis van Gaal copies his counterpart. Michael Carrick replaces Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Mr Lamide: This is the first time LvG has been brave with his line up and subs. This is our best away performance under him.

Andrew Wilson: Rooney's goal papers over another poor personal performance. Gives the ball away too much.

  16. SUBSTITUTION

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku picks the ball up and slams it down in disgust after referee Jon Moss judges him to have made a foul.

You can't do that, Romelu. Into the book you go.

  17. CLOSE!

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

    Wayne Rooney again?

NO! The England man races clear again, but this time the finish is not there. The ball gets caught under his feet, it's all a bit messy before poking a left-footed strike which Tim Howard stops.

Rooney never looked quite comfortable there, with the ball on his left side.

  18. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Everton are not letting their heads drop though and are still pushing forward. Seamus Coleman has a shot blocked and Ross Barkley forces David de Gea into a smart save with a swerving effort.

    Dion Dublin

Former Aston Villa striker on Final Score

"Wayne Rooney is the captain of England and Manchester United. He's used to the pressure. He's a player you can rely on, in the hot and the cold."

  21. Post update

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

Just when you thought Everton were about to get back into the game, that happens. It's a big blow for the home side and their chances of getting anything out of this game are about 1%.

Manager Louis van Gaal looks pleased on the bench, applauding his players with vigour.

  22. 'Give United credit'

    Everton 0-3 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Everton were caught on the break, but give United credit. They played the ball though, Rooney ran onto it and we were right behind his shot. Howard came out quickly but Rooney got enough on the ball to put it in.

"After a bright start, Everton are out of this now. They have been punished by United."

  23. GOAL - Everton 0-3 Man Utd

    Wayne Rooney (62 mins)

First away goal for 11 months.

Morgan Schneiderlin pounces on Phil Jagielka's wayward pass and the ball reaches the impressive Ander Herrera, whose ball into the path of Wayne Rooney is perfect.

The England man thunders in on the Everton goal and makes no mistake with his low finish.

    Game over.

    Wayne Rooney scores

  24. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

A set piece is going to be Everton's best chance of getting back into this match. Ross Barkley with a curled free-kick from out wide which David de Gea has to react to and kick away.

    Unorthodox goalkeeping but very effective.

An hour gone, United still lead by two goals.

  25. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Louis van Gaal needs to send on a Land Rover or another 4x4 vehicle to try and stop Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian is just so strong, holding off two United men on the halfway line like they are little kids, almost teasing them saying, 'come on then'.

Still no goals for the home side though.

  26. CLOSE!

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Everton cranking up the pressure and the volume! Aaron Lennon cuts the ball back to Romelu Lukaku, whose placed finish is kept out by the outstretched foot of David de Gea.

Everton denied, can they get on the scoresheet?

  27. Get Involved

Ghazanfar Aslam: I think LvG has now truly understood why it was important to bring Herrera and Schneiderlin back. This is by far the best, most tactically disciplined team he's ever fielded.

  28. YELLOW CARD

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku is a real handful and causes Morcos Rojo to bundle him over on the right side of the penalty area.

Ross Barkley's free-kick is a disappointing one though, failing to clear the first man.

Goal coming for the home side?

  29. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Everton looking much better. Arouna Kone has added some impetus up front, playing a one-two with striker partner Romelu Lukaku before firing a shot which is blocked.

The home fans are beginning to find their voices.

  30. YELLOW CARD

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Bastian Schweinsteiger goes into the book. It's for an accumulation of offences, rather than the one on Ross Barkley just now.

  31. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

It's a lovely delivery into a dangerous area from Ross Barkley, but Chris Smalling can clear at the back post before Romelu Lukaku can come steaming in.

A bright start from the home side as they look to overturn a two goal deficit.

  32. United were 'untroubled in the first half"

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Roberto Martinez, in bringing an extra striker on, has obviously decided he has to do something to try and disturb the United backline, which was untroubled in the first half."

  33. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

One minute in and Everton defender John Stones is brought down deep in the United half by Bastian Schweinsteiger. What was the England international doing up there?

  34. Get Involved

Kevin: LvG got it tactically spot on for this game. Herrera is looking fantastic in that number 10 role.

  35. KICK-OFF

Back under way in the second half at Goodison Park. Can Everton turn this game around?

  36. SUBSTITUTION

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Juan Mata off and England U21 international Jesse Lingard comes on for Manchester United.

Arouna Kone replaces Steven Naismith for Everton.

  37. 'People will continue to conjure up his memory'

    Everton 0-2 Man City

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Howard Kendall will always be held in the highest regard, and people will continue to conjure up his memory for years to come."

  38. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Morgan Schneiderlin is running the show for Manchester United so far. The midfielder had the most touches (53), joint-most passes (44) and 97.7% completion.

To cap it off, the Frenchman had a 97.7% pass completion in the first 45 minutes. How he was missed against Arsenal.

  39. 'The hosts haven't threatened'

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Manchester United started the better and as the half went on they progressed, and could have had a third or even fourth goal.

"The midfield is causing all of Everton's problems, and the hosts haven't threatened David de Gea much in the United goal."

  40. HALF-TIME

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

United comfortable with a two goal lead.

  41. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

One minute of added time to play.

  42. 'Herrera must think this is his birthday'

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"The midfield players of Everton are getting caught out by the pace of Manchester United. That is a huge problem for Roberto Martinez.

"Ander Herrera must think this is his birthday - he was involved in one goal, scored the other and could have had another. He's enjoying so much freedom.

"Everton need to change things at half-time."

  43. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

One area Everton can exploit is the right-hand side of Manchester United's defence. Brendan Galloway is getting lots of space down there.

He earns a corner, from which Ross Barkley forces David De Gea into a reflex save. Everton's best effort of the first half.

  44. CLOSE!

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Nearly a third.

Wayne Rooney is on side and breaks clear. He makes his way into the Everton penalty area before cutting the ball back to Anthony Martial.

    The Frenchman shoots...

...but his goalbound effort is gathered on the line by a sprawling Tim Howard. He should have buried it and finished the match.

  45. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Everton skipper Phil Jagielka looks to take matters into his own hands, lashing a shot over the bar.

  46. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Manchester United comfortable at the moment and seem to be content with their situation.

They're not over committing men forward, so Everton are finding it difficult to break their sturdy defence down.

They'll need a little more guile to pick open that lock. Can Ross Barkley provide the inspiration?

  47. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Everton left-back Brendan Galloway gallops away from Juan Mata, curling in a lovely ball into the box which Chris Smalling intercepts.

A dangerous situation is averted by the away side.

  48. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Everton fans are subdued, while it's the Manchester United fans making all the noise.

On the pitch, Everton are attempting to work an opening, but the visitors are defending well.

  49. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Phil Jones is patched up and returns to the field. How many minutes did you have on your 'Phil Jones to get injured' sweepstake?

James McCarthy just lets Bastian Schweinsteiger know he's there, clipping his ankles. Nothing malicious.

  50. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

That man Romelu Lukaku once again. He's proving to be a bad itch for Manchester United.

The Belgian leaps in a frog-like motion to get above goalkeeper David De Gea, and nods towards goal but the effort is cleared away.

De Gea is left on the deck in a heap. He felt the striker's force there!

  52. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Red shirt, red nose. Not Comic Relief Day just yet but defender Phil Jones is in the wars, ordered off the pitch by the referee with a bloodied nose. United are down to 10 men momentarily.

  53. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Steven Naismith, who scored a hat-trick here earlier this season against Chelsea, is left frustrated as he tried to get his toe on the ball inside the area but Chris Smalling get in first to hook the ball away.

It's an emotional day for the home side and being two goals behind early on has just made it more of a difficult afternoon for them.

  54. YELLOW CARD

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Missed this but in the lead up to the second goal, Everton full-back Seamus Coleman chopped down Anthony Martial for which he was booked.

  55. Post update

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku again causing problems, going down in the box. The crowd and player appeal, but referee Jon Moss gives nothing.

Plenty of time for the home side to get back into this game.

  56. 'What a good goal that was!'

    Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Everton were caught cold again. There was nobody marking Herrera running in from the right. Rojo's first-time ball was pinpoint and the header was down, giving Howard no chance of saving it. What a good goal that was!"

  57. GOAL - Everton 0-2 Man Utd

    Ander Herrera (22 mins)

A quickfire double for Manchester United.

Anthony Martial makes a neat turn to play the ball into the path of Marcos Rojo on the left, who whips a brilliant cross into the box and Ander Herrera nods in from the penalty spot.

    Easy pickings.

    Everton 0-1 Man Utd

    Dion Dublin

Former Aston Villa striker on Final Score

"An easy finish for Morgan Schneiderlin, and really it was the only finish that would have come off from that angle - he slid it in low past the goalkeeper."

  59. Post update

    Everton 0-1 Man Utd

    Can Everton respond to this?

  60. 'A good start for Manchester United'

    Everton 0-1 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Everton looked a little untidy there at the back. Schneiderlin only had to poke it into the goal from just six yards out. He took that with great composure.

"A good start for Manchester United."

    Morgan Schneiderlin
  61. GOAL - Everton 0-1 Man Utd

    Morgan Schneiderlin (19 mins)

    Everton punished.

The Toffees have chances to clear the ball but Steven Naismith can't get any purchase on a header. The ball is kept alive by Marcos Rojo on the edge of the box, before defender Chris Smalling knocks it into the path of Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Frenchman is cool and composed, with the freedom of Liverpool in front of him, taking the ball down before slotting low into the corner his first goal for United.

    Morgan Schneiderlin scores
  62. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Excellent play from Manchester United. The trio of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera flick the ball quickly around them, before the Spaniard's effort is tipped over the bar.

  63. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Everton have been the brighter side early on and aside from Wayne Rooney's wayward effort, have not given Manchester United much of a sniff.

United are still in this game, having not conceded three early goals like their last game.

  64. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

United cannot clear their lines from the resulting corner and Everton can build some pressure. Romelu Lukaku brings down Chris Smalling and Louis van Gaal's men can gather themselves.

The way they were unable to clear the ball for the period of pressure will be of concern to the Dutchman.

  65. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku's free-kick comes off the wall and runs away for a corner. Could have deflected in.

  66. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Ross Barkley has had a good start to the season and has a shot blocked after good work on the edge of the area.

Morgan Schneiderlin is too keen to get the ball and fouls Steven Naismith. A free-kick for Everton in a promising position. Romelu Lukaku is over it...

  67. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku is a tower block of a man and is causing Manchester United central defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all sorts of problems. There's a cry for a penalty shout at Smalling and Lukaku come together, but referee Jon Moss waves the appeals away.

At the other end, Wayne Rooney flashes a shot wide of goal.

  68. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

    Garth Crooks

Former Spurs striker on Final Score

"Jurgen Klopp has been brought in by Liverpool to try and break dominance at the top of the league. There are actually very few managers who can do that, but of course Howard Kendall was one of them."

  69. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

United full-back Matteo Darmian gets forward for the first time and whips in a superb ball across the six-yard box, but neither Anthony Martial nor Wayne Rooney are there to get on the end of it. The pair caught on their heels a little. If one of them had gambled...

  70. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku is working hard up front too and the Everton striker nearly nips in to take the ball at the edge of the area but David De Gea gathers in the nick of time.

  71. 'A tremendous figure'

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

    Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra at Goodison Park

"Howard Kendall really was a Goodison Park hero. People talk about football legends, but Howard was. A tremendous figure, a terrific player and I was never surprised he was a successful manager."

  72. Post update

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

Spaniard Ander Herrera has had to wait for his chance but is involved early on for Manchester United with some neat touches.

Everton are not giving the opponents any time on the ball though, biting at their ankles like a pack of rottweilers.

    Roberto Martinez

"The relationship with the crowd and the high standard he set. He brought belief that anything could be achieved. He put Everton on the highest step in European football in the 80s. For anyone who is representing Everton today, we have to be up at that level. It needs to be a special occasion for Howard.

  93. 'Admired by both sides of Merseyside'

Everton v Man Utd (15:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Howard Kendall presided over a remarkable transformation in Everton's fortunes, taking a club on its knees at the end of 1983 to the finest in Europe only 18 months later after winning the FA Cup in 1984 and the title and European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985.

    Howard Kendall

"He was admired by both Everton and Liverpool fans alike as a man who lived life to the full and the emotions on show at Goodison Park on Saturday will be testimony to his stature."

  94. Remembering Howard Kendall

Rob Drake: I was 13 when I went by train to my first ever Everton game on my own at Derby. Howard scored from 20 yards. Part of a wonderful midfield and team, then a great manager. And finally confident enough to go to Spain to manage. What a sad day.

Steve B, Liverpool fan: If my memory serves me right Everton would have more than likely gone on to more European Cup glory if it wasn't for the ban on English clubs in Europe. Great manager, great team. Very sad day. RIP Howard Kendall.

"It was enjoyable to come into training every single day. The first day of pre-season, he'd get players on side. He was a players' manager, realising you have to be a team both on and off the field. We always mixed socially.

"He always told us to attack and the Gwladys Street End would suck the ball into the goal for us. And it did."

  96. Remembering Howard Kendall

Glyn, Woolton: Absolutely devastated to hear sad news of Howard's passing. Not only our greatest ever manager but a great player who could tackle, pass, score great goals and inspire those around him. Met him a few times in recent years and he was a true gent as well as being a true blue. God bless.

Spud: Howard Kendall is in every good memory I have as an Everton fan as player, manager and bloke. Captain 1970, manager 1985, and watching companion 1995. He will be missed by every football person in the UK.

  99. 'Kendall was my idol'

    Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender on Football Focus

"If you ask Evertonians from the the 1960s they will tell you Howard Kendall was part of the best Everton midfield of all time, with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey.

"He used to play for Preston too, and he was my idol growing up, but that Everton team of the mid 1980s - his team - were outstanding. If English clubs hadn't been banned from playing in Europe because of the Heysel disaster, they could have won the European Cup.

"He was a good man, a social man, a real football man. And he will be very sorely missed. It's come as a real shock."
