    Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham.

Michail Antonio weaves through a couple of challenges before being brought down by a desperate Villa defender. West Ham have a free-kick 40 yards or so from the Villa goal.

Enner Valencia's effort bounces in front of Brad Guzan but the goalkeeper saves.

  2. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

West Ham appeal for a penalty as Alex Song's flick hits Ashley Westwood, but the Hammers' pleas are ignored by Mike Dean.

  3. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

West Ham have numbers in defence and, you'd assume, there's no way through for Villa at this late hour.

  4. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

Aston Villa earn a free-kick in the last 30 seconds of the regulation 90 minutes... A last chance for a last-gasp winner? Maybe. There will be four minutes of added time.

It's a poor free-kick from Leandro Bacuna, however - flying above attackers and defenders and out of play.

  5. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

Under five minutes remaining and Aston Villa are finishing strongly, though they need to start winning games if they are to fight their way from the bottom of the table.

  6. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

We're into the last 10 minutes and Villa look the more likely to score. The hosts playing in the West Ham half, but have yet to truly test Adrian.

  7. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

West Ham spending much of their time in their own half. Can they hold on in these latter stages? Villa retaining possession, though have not created a clear chance.

  8. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

West Ham stretched. James Collins heads Alan Hutton's header off the line... Villa in the ascendancy. West Ham hanging on.

  9. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

Twenty minutes remaining and Villa are threatening. Ashley Westwood with a flick across goal raising pulses without threatening goal.

  10. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

Villa's fans have increased the volume and the hosts are continuing to attack. Rudy Gestede again causing problems inside the box, though Adrian gathers a cross after initially fumbling.

  11. GOAL - Jordan Ayew

    Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham

    Jordan Ayew scores a penalty

Cool as a cucumber. Through the middle, beating the diving Adrian. Thirty minutes remaining.

  12. PENALTY - Aston Villa

Angelo Ogbonna brings down Rudy Gestede inside the box, leaving Mike Dean with little option but to award the penalty.

  14. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Mauro Zárate dangerous from the set-pieces... James Collins heading his free-kick wide. Villa showing plenty of spirit, though.

  15. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Villa peppering the West Ham goal. Ashley Westwood this time aiming from distance, but his shot lacks accuracy.

  16. Premier League latest scores

We've been experiencing some issues this afternoon with our scores updating. So, just to be clear, here is how things stand in the Premier League:

    Latest scores:

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

  17. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Villa attacking with urgency... Jordan Ayew weaving down the left, but there's no way through so he retains possession and Villa build again... Jordan Veretout with a daisy-cutter which Adrian pushes wide... Momentum is with Villa.

  18. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Villa enjoying plenty of possession...Alan Hutton finds Rudy Gestede who heads wide and falls awkwardly as he lands. The forward is hobbling on the sidelines while play continues.

  19. KICK-OFF

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Mike Dean gets the second half started and West Ham attack from the off. The visitors earn a corner, but Brad Guzan firmly punches away Mauro Zárate in-swinger.

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

The players are out for the start of the second half, with West Ham making a substitution - Carl Jenkinson on for James Tomkins, who suffered a gash to the head in the first half.

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Villa enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half, but lacked inspiration in the final third and were undone by a swift West Ham counter-attack in the dying minutes of the half.

Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham possession

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

Conceding in added time is a major blow to a Villa side who showed plenty of promise in that opening half.

  23. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

    Aaron Cresswell scores

Aaron Cresswell given the freedom of the pitch to spring forward and the Hammers left-back, unmarked, has the time to pick his spot from the edge of the area and hit the bottom corner.

  24. GOAL - Aaron Cresswell

    Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

    Aaron Cresswell celebrates

    Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Cheikhou Kouyate with a header... and his effort ricochets off the crossbar! Enner Valencia and Mark Noble were the architects of that chance.

  26. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Adrian trying to play his way out of danger despite Rudy Gestede breathing down his neck. The Hammers goalie just about gets away with it. Minutes remaining of the half.

  27. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

West Ham threatening. Michail Antonio cuts in from the left into the box but balloons his effort high and wide.

  28. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Villa spray the ball around, looking for inspiration... Eventually they cede possession and West Ham probe forward, but Aaron Cresswell wastes an opportunity with a poor cross from the left which Brad Guzan collects.

    Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Carlos Sánchez is bullied by Cheikhou Kouyaté near the halfway line which sparks a West Ham attack which, luckily for the Villa midfielder, comes to nothing.

Sanchez though - who is wearing a face guard - is still on the ground and eventually hobbles off. His game is done. Carles Gil is the man who will replace the Colombia international.

  30. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Much of the play is happening in West Ham's half, but it's clear why the Hammers have not conceded a goal in their last three matches. The visitors are solid and well organised and Villa will need to persevere if they are to nip ahead.

  31. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Villa monopolising possession, but West Ham holding firm. So far. Leandro Bacuna with a hopeful cross into the box which Adrian gathers with little fuss.

  32. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Angelo Ogbonna cuts out a Jordan Ayew low cross, stopping the danger at its source. Aston Villa still in control, though - Leandro Bacuna with a shot from outside the box which draws an acrobatic save from Adrian.

  33. CLOSE!

    Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Villa showing plenty of spirit, which they must if they are to fight their way out of the bottom three. The hosts' defence, though, is wobbly. Mauro Zárate is given the freedom to sprint towards the box and only a fine diving save from Brad Guzan prevents the shot from sneaking into the bottom corner.

  34. CLOSE!

Alan Hutton with the cross this time, from the right, but Rudy Gestede leaps above everyone and his deflected header nearly loops into the top corner. The hosts must make do with another corner - their fourth of the match - instead. Villa's momentum building.

  35. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Leandro Bacuna  gaining acres with a spirited burst down the left, but the defender's heavy touch when approaching the box allows James Collins to sweep up the danger.

  36. CLOSE!

    Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Villa surging forward. Rudy Gestede connects with Jordan Veretout's cross and his header is a fraction wide from the bottom corner. That was the best chance of the match so far.

  37. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Cheikhou Kouyate with a wild cross into the stands which the Villa fans behind goal ironically cheer. It's been a messy opening 17 minutes or so, both teams lacking quality and poise on the ball.

  38. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Jordan Ayew is the liveliest Villa player, skipping down the left and combining with Rudy Gestede, who switches play to the right. Jordan Veretout's cross goes out for a corner, which West Ham successfully defend. Villa enjoying their most promising period.

  39. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

    James Tomkins

There still appears to be blood coming from James Tomkins' head wound so the Hammers defender must depart the field once again.

Meanwhile, Villa have a corner on the right, which is headed away and then hooked out by Michail Antonio, sparking a counter-attack.

Leandro Bacuna stops West Ham's flow, but does so illegally and gets a yellow card for his efforts, while also conceding a free kick in his own half.

  40. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Jordan Ayew gallops down the left flank. Promising. But Villa are lacking confidence and guile. They gift possession away when in a promising position on the left.

West Ham back to 11 men as James Tomkins returns to the field with a bandage around his head.

  41. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Cheikhou Kouyate leaps above everyone inside the box, but heads the corner wide. West Ham dominating these early stages. Villa deprived of the ball.

  42. Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

Worrying signs for Villa's shaky defence. Mauro Zárate curls a corner into the box and Brad Guzan comes off his line to punch away the danger.

A clash of heads between Alan Hutton and James Tomkins and it's the West Ham defender who needs attention on a gash just above the eyebrow. Tomkins momentarily leaves the field so the Hammers are down to 10 men as they prepare to take another corner.

  43. KICK-OFF

    Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham

    Slaven Bilic pre-match

Mike Dean blows his whistle. Villa's fans sing. The match is under way.

  44. Three minutes until kick-off

Aston Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

The players walk out to actual fanfare. Joleon Lescott leads out Villa's team who need to win today if they are to enjoy any sort of revival in the second half of the season.

  45. Christmas cheer?

Aston Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

Perhaps only the optimistic will expect goals this afternoon. West Ham's previous three matches ended in goalless draws, while only three goals have been scored in the past four matches between these two sides.

Still, it's Christmas and Paul McCartney's Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time is playing at Villa Park so there's plenty to cheer about.

  48. MOTD commentator's view

Aston Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Simon Brotherton

    MOTD commentator at Villa Park

"There hasn't been much for Villa fans to cheer about this season, but at least their team looked capable of putting up a bit of a fight in the second half at Newcastle last weekend.

"That's a start and on recent evidence was far from a guarantee. A point wasn't bad but with the ever widening gap to safety, clearly not enough.

"They need a couple of wins at least just to instil some belief and a measure of hope.

"West Ham have no such worries, but haven't won in the league for two months now themselves and, for the first time in their history, have drawn each of the last three games 0-0."

  49. Lawro's prediction

Aston Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson

    BBC Sport football expert

"I'm going for 1-1. I would never normally say before Christmas that a team will be relegated - but I think Aston Villa will be relegated.

"Yes, they came back to draw 1-1 at Newcastle last weekend, but that was Villa playing for 45 minutes and still getting just one point. They haven't got goals in them - it's a real worry.

"Considering all the injuries West Ham have suffered, boss Slaven Bilic has not made a great deal about them. He doesn't moan every week about having players out.

"The Hammers have not got many goals in them but look sound defensively - illustrated by three consecutive 0-0 draws."

  50. Ayew making his mark

Aston Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Jordan Ayew stats graphic

Villa are bottom of the pile and down on their luck, but at least summer signing Jordan Ayew is starting to find form. Solace? Maybe not.

  51. On their way

Ascton Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

Fans are working off the excesses of Christmas by walking to the stadium. Stoic. Inside Villa Park, the players are warming up - lunges, stretches, side-steps, that sort of thing, while the mascots are posing for pictures with various young fans.

  52. Villa 'no easier than Manchester United'

Aston Villa v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

Aston Villa may be propping up the Premier League table and without a win since the opening day of the season, but that doesn't mean Hammers boss Slaven Bilic is taking them lightly.

"I saw their [Villa's] last few games... I have seen the energy, seen their quality and they are fighting for their lives," he says.

"So, make no mistake, I am not expecting anything easier than against Swansea, Stoke or Manchester United. They have some quality players who can harm you."
