  1. Goodnight

    Poland celebrate qualification

In the end it was celebrations for Poland and commiserations for the Republic of Ireland at the conclusion of Group D.

They will get a second stab at it. And we have one more evening to go - join us on Monday for England's final game. See you there!

    Robbie Brady of Ireland
  2. Manager reaction

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill, speaking to Sky Sports: “Before we played Germany if you had offered me third I would have taken it. But that win gave us the confidence to come and play here. We didn't make it but we are still fighting strongly. Whoever we play in the two games in the play-offs, we will have as good a chance as they will have.

“We had to go for it in the second half, I actually thought we might have got a second goal, and that would have taken us through. Right until the end we were there but we were perhaps lacking that cohesiveness we had against Germany.

"You can’t go through 10 games, and including the play-offs will be 12 games, without losing a few players on the way. John O’Shea could have been a bit more careful [in picking up a second yellow card] but that’s the way it is. Who knows? We might lose some more through injures at club level."

On Shane Long, who came off with an injury: “I still have to get the news though from the doctors but he’s in a bit of pain at the moment."

  4. Manager reaction

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill, speaking to Sky Sports: "We’re obviously disappointed. We knew it was going to be a difficult game. To come here with the same energy as we showed against Germany, that was always going to be difficult with such a short turnaround, and away from home.

"We made life difficult for ourselves at times and we weren't quite able to do it. Despite putting a lot of pressure on them it wasn't to be. But we are still in there, we can still make it.

"I thought Richard [Keogh] might have scored his chance, we knew that in the last 15 minutes we would get a decent opportunity to score a goal, and that was it. We didn't take it, it’s gone, but we live to fight another day."

    Martin O'Neill
  5. 'It's a great job to have.'

    Gibraltar 0-6 Scotland

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan: "I'm so proud to be the Scotland manager; it's a great, great job to have. There's disappointments along the way, that's for sure. But I've got to say it's been a fantastic experience.

"I'm still enjoying the evening; the players' performance; the fans' performance and I'm going to enjoy that for a bit before I start thinking about me."

That is a joint record with Northern Ireland legend David Healy during qualifiers for Euro 2008.

    Other notable scorers:

12: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Netherlands (Euro 2012); Davor Suker, Croatia (Euro 1996)

  10. 'We let ourselves down'

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman: "We are all disappointed after doing brilliantly against Germany. We let ourselves down. We had the confidence and expected to win.

"We have a big month now in November and we have to get going again. For periods of the group we would have snatched your hand off for a play-off place."

  11. FULL-TIME

    Gibraltar 0-6 Scotland

    Chris McLaughlin

    BBC Sport Scotland

"The full time whistle brings the game and Scotland's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign to an end. Tonight's win was certainly convincing but realistically it does little to ease the pain inflicted by Poland at Hampden on Thursday. To be fair, the players promised a performance and they delivered.

"They now trudge across the pitch to applaud the supporters. Disappointment doesn't always bring disconnect though and the fans rise as one to show their appreciation for a squad that allowed them to believe for long spells of this campaign.

"The kilts and passports go back in the cupboard for now but they'll be dusted down late next year and once again we will allow ourselves to believe that maybe, just maybe this one will be different. Who needs France? It's all about Russia."

"Tonight they just couldn't reproduce the big performance against Germany."

"That was the big chance, the one for Richard Keogh. He just didn't get the power on it. Martin O'Neill's changes did bring Ireland into the game towards the end of the match but I think probably Poland deserved to win.

"It's been a big campaign from Ireland, but now they've got to refocus for the play-offs."

  19. Play-off picture

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

It's a place in the play-offs for the seventh time in the last 11 major tournaments. Can the nearly men make it through? They have a second chance in November.

Poland deserved the win, just about, and in the end the one class player on the pitch proved the difference.

  20. Germany top Group D

    Germany 2-1 Georgia

    Germany celebrate

It's all over in Leipzig and Germany have done just enough to get the win and top the group. Don't they always do just enough?

They had a bit of a wobble when Georgia equalised, but Max Kruse came off the bench to nab the winner.

  22. YELLOW CARD

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Robert Lewandowski is close to bundling in a third as Ireland have to push men forwards now. A corner, a free-kick, anything will do for the men in green but instead it's Poland on the attack.

Lewandowski is then tripped by Jon Walters and he is booked. Walters will miss the first leg of the play-offs. IF...

Unfortunately not, Thomas. Hungary are currently the best third-placed team, but Ukraine can leapfrog them if they beat Spain tomorrow.

And for the real hardcore permutation fans among you, it's also possible for Turkey to do it, but only if they beat Iceland and Kazakhstan climb off bottom and above Latvia. Still with us?

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

    Kevin Kilbane

BBC Radio 5 live at the National Stadium, Warsaw

"What a chance. It's a huge chance for Richard Keogh. He just didn't get any power on it did he?

"With Wes Hoolahan on the pitch, it's settling Ireland down. When he gets on the ball he takes three or four touches and just calms the play. He's been excellent since coming on."

  40. GREAT SAVE!

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Was that the chance?! Aiden McGeady beats his man on the right, stands up a cross and centre-half Richard Keogh is there with the header. Put it in the corner and you can pack your bags for France! But he puts it down the middle and Lukasz Fabianski keeps it out.

  41. Post update

  42. SUBSTITUTION

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Did I tell you that Wes Hoolahan is on for James McClean? He is. The Norwich playmaker could add that touch of class up there. Poland have added an extra centre-back, he's a giant too as Lukasz Szukala trots on.

  43. Post update

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Robbie Keane for the header! No! Great ball in, it looks like a free header but Kamil Glik is there to flick it away.

This could be a torturous final 15 minutes for fans of both nations...

  44. Late show

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

John O'Shea celebrates his late goal against Germany

    You're not wrong Kevin.

The Irish have scored three key late goals in the group so far:

    Georgia (a) McGeady 90

    Germany (a) O'Shea 90+4

    Poland (h) Long 90+1

  45. Post update

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

    Kevin Kilbane

BBC Radio 5 live at the National Stadium, Warsaw

"What a touch it was from Robert Lewandowski but that's brilliant from Seamus Coleman - he recognised John O'Shea had been caught out.

"Ireland have got a history of scoring late in games during this qualification campaign. They just have to stay in the match."

    Robert Lewandowski
  46. CLOSE!

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

What a tackle! Robert Lewandowski with a touch of real class, world class really, as he flicks a pass into his path with his heel and undoes the Irish defence. Or so it seems, as as he is about to pull the trigger Seamus Coleman makes up the yards to pull off an amazing challenge.

Grzegorz Krychowiak is then left free from the corner and heads wide!

  50. Post update

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Will Ireland get one big chance in the final 20 minutes? And can they take it? Automatic qualification may well depend on those two key questions. Jeff Hendrick drives into the penalty area but he gives away a soft free-kick.

  51. Post update

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

    Kevin Kilbane

BBC Radio 5 live at the National Stadium, Warsaw

"What a save from Darren Randolph, he came right out and smothered with his chest.

"Since the substitutions Ireland have come into the game a little bit more now. James McClean is spreading the play out wide and you feel that's where they can really benefit."

  52. Germany creaking

    Germany 1-1 Georgia

Germany's defence has gone to pieces since Georgia's equaliser, and Tornike Okriashvili has a golden chance to put them in front.

The ball in from the right is just behind him but he manages to dig out a shot towards goal, which Manuel Neuer has to stretch to tip over the bar.

If Germany did fall behind a draw could be good enough for Poland and the Republic of Ireland.

    Georgia celebrate their equaliser
  53. GREAT SAVE!

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

A huge save! Poland had been rather under the cosh for 10 minutes or so but they break out with real quality. They slice through and find Kamil Grosicki into the area, one-on-one, but Darren Randolph spreads himself to make a key save.

Bad news for the visitors as Shane Long goes down in pain after a tackle from Kamil Glik. Long looks in trouble...

  64. That wasn't in the script

    Germany 1-1 Georgia

Georgia equalise, and it's a fantastic left foot volley from the edge of the box by captain Jaba Kankava.

He was the man who gave the penalty away, but he's more than made amends with a stunning strike.

A Georgia win would mean that a draw in Warsaw would put Germany into the play-offs...

  65. Post update

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Germany's goal has no impact on what the Republic of Ireland need to do though. A 2-2 draw would still put the Irish through and Glenn Whelan at least makes Lukasz Fabianski work with a drive from 25 yards.

  66. Germany take the lead

    Germany 1-0 Georgia

Germany finally hit the front - but it took a penalty to break the deadlock.

Mesut Ozil tricked his way into the box and was tripped.

After goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili was booked for trying to put Thomas Muller off, the German stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way and rolled in the spot kick.

That puts Germany back on top of the group.

    #bbcfootball

peutlantMarmot: Watching in San Diego, struggling to understand why a 2-2 draw works for the Irish, but not 1-1?

An excellent question and you are not alone my friend.

Uefa uses head-to-head records to decide who finishes higher when teams are level on points.

Republic of Ireland and Poland drew 1-1 in Dublin, so a 2-2 draw in Warsaw would put the Irish through on 'away' goals, as it were.

If it were to finish 1-1, Poland would go through because the next criteria used to separate sides is goal difference in the group as a whole. The Poles are on +23 as it stands, while Ireland are on +12.

    Clear enough?

  78. What do the Republic need?

    Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

    Ireland players look dejected

"It's down to nervousness, Ireland not clearing their lines. It's a really good downward header from Robert Lewandowski, but you can't allow a player of his calibre so much space in the box. Darren Randolph had no chance."

  86. GOAL - Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland

    Robert Lewandowski (42 mins)

What a header! That is phenomenal work from Robert Lewandowski!

Krzysztof Maczynski crosses in from the right after a neat passing move, Lewandowski has a few yards of space and exploits it brilliantly, he heads in from 13 yards out with so much power, it's brilliant.

A head like a traction engine!

Poland going through, top of the group as it stands...

Tattz: By my calculations (and Joachim Low's), Ireland only need to complete about another 89 long balls before they will score.

    Poland 1-1 Republic of Ireland

It's a night for cool heads all right. Perhaps Killer can get down there nearer the touchline in the second half.

James McClean, a man whose head I imagine is permanently set to 'hot', gives away a silly free-kick and now Ireland have some defending to do. But the free-kick is awful. Right into Glenn Whelan's side.

"When Ireland are in possession they're struggling to use it and Poland are building momentum. They're just panicking a bit at the moment. But both defences have looked nervous."

  92. BreakingKrul out for the season

    Newcastle United

Some breaking, and bad news for any Newcastle fans reading. GoalkeeperTim Krulhas been ruled out for the rest of the season with a cruciate knee injury sustained while playing for the Netherlands yesterday.

    A horrible blow.

Poland now do get down the sides of the Republic of Ireland and when a cross comes in it's panic stations in that penalty area.

Ireland just about get it away but it's rather more luck than judgement .A few slices here, a missed kick there. Where's Richard Dunne when the Irish need him?

  94. Elsewhere in Group D

    Germany 0-0 Georgia

It's been all Germany so far, and then out of nothing Georgia create the best chance of the game. Tornike Okriashvili has a great chance to open the scoring, but is denied by a fine save to his left-hand side by Manuel Neuer. Might be a few German nerves now....

They need a point to secure qualification.

    Poland 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Poland having a good spell of possession now but (touch wood) they are not slicing through the Irish ranks like they managed on a few occasions in the opening 15 minutes.

I'll keep repeating this, for my own sanity if nothing else, but a 1-1 draw will see Poland through.

"The Republic of Ireland are trying to force the issue a bit too much at the moment, they're looking to get the ball up to Shane Long too quickly.

"Poland like to play on the counter attack, so Martin O'Neill's side have got to be a bit more organised."

    Steady on!

We get a nice rendition of 'you only sing when you're winning' from the home fans - or the Polish version anyway. If anyone knows the lyrics let us know.

The Republic are well drilled but they are a bit limited in their approach. They haven't got the wide men into the game at all yet.

Poland look a real threat, they whip in a great cross which just about evades Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern man also has a half-hearted shout for a penalty after a tussle with John O'Shea.

"But the Republic of Ireland were undone too easily - again."

  103. DISALLOWED GOAL

    Poland 1-1 Republic of Ireland

I can't keep up! Poland have the ball in the net after some drastic defending from Ireland, the men in white cut through all too easily and only some last-ditch sliding in keeps the ball out. The ball does run to Pawel Olkowski and he fires in, but the offside flag was raised. Someone give us a breather!

  106. PENALTY TO IRELAND

    Poland 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Wow! Instant response! Shane Long goes up for a header right on the edge of the area and a defender is pinged for a high foot! His foot was at head-height but that is still soft. Stunned silence around the stadium...
