Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty on BBC One: "I think we were overawed.

"That was not the team that has got us here, we have lacked a lot of that today and have come away with no points.

"We knew it would be tough, but I think the whole performance was not a Northern Ireland performance and on Thursday we will go and put it right.

"We can change the fight and determination. We didn’t turn up today, Michael will talk to us and we will take notice and we will have a more determined and heartful performance on Thursday."

Poland stop the rot

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

A quite remarkable stat coming now.

That was Poland's first EVER win in a European Championship.

It's their third successive tournament but they've finished bottom on both previous occasions, including at Euro 2008, which they co-hosted.

James Stevenson: Lack of quality in final third is going to cost Northern Ireland. Showed grit, defended well, but Poland better all round.

Jmac: I don't want to critical of M O'Neil but we had been playing so well with 352 I think going back to 541 was too negative alas.

'We were feeding on scraps'

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland defender Chris Brunt, who is injured on the sidelines, has been speaking on BBC One.

"We didn't create an awful lot. We looked more dangerous when Conor Washington came on with two up top. We were feeding on scraps.

"It's warm here and it was taking its toll on the players. But I don't think application or effort was ever going to be in doubt.

"The lads and Michael will be disappointed with how we did with the ball tonight.

"There's a lot more hanging on next game. We need to go out and get the win. But our preparations won't change. We'll take time to recover and reflect."

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley on BBC Radio 5 live: "We are disappointed with the result. We set up to get a clean sheet and nick something then they scored and we had to come out.

"I thought we were better then and moved the ball a bit better. Maybe in the second game we will be a bit more positive because we have nothing to lose.

"We have got to win the game and play on the front foot and I think maybe we let them dictate possession too much because we have been doing that in qualifying.

"We are just disappointed for the supporters really."

'We need to be braver'

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland skipper Steven Davis on BBC One: "It's a disappointing evening. We have to braver on the ball but it's a real learning curve for us. We always knew it would be difficult but we weren't good enough."

It's getting hot in here

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

For fans of heat maps...

Plenty of action in Poland's attacking half (left), less so in Northern Ireland's (right). Valiant effort from Michael O'Neill's side but you can hardly say that Poland didn't deserve the win.

Highlights: Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

I don't know about you, but I enjoyed that one.

If you missed any of the action, here's the highlights.

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Gerry Taggart

Former Northern Ireland captain in Nice

"Poland have deserved to win the match.

"The tactics board is going to have to be rewritten in the Northern Ireland dressing room.

"Poland controlled the game, created best chances and Northern Ireland didn't create enough or have enough possession of the ball.

"Hats off to Poland but we have got two more games to try and salvage something to get through to the next round of this competition."

FULL-TIME

The referee blows for full-time.

It just wasn't to be for Northern Ireland tonight, and their 12-match unbeaten run comes to an end.

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

We're into three minutes of injury time. Can Northern Ireland find something?

A ball comes flying into the Poland box and as keeper Wojciech Szczesny flies forward to catch it, he comes steaming into Lukasz Piszczek.

The Polish pair go bang, crash and wallop into each other.

It takes them 30 seconds before they both walk off a bit gingerly, and Szczesny pats his team-mate on the head to say sorry.

Someone shout MINE in future.

Are you sure, Kyle?

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

If this had gone in, it would have been one of THE great moments.

If.

Gerry Taggart

Former Northern Ireland captain in Nice

"Again, Oli Norwood, famed for his delivery has not delivered."

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland earn a free-kick from wide on the left again.

What can Oliver Norwood do here? Urrrrm...not a lot.

The Reading man misses every team mate as he skims the ball over and it goes straight out.

Gerry Taggart

Former Northern Ireland captain in Nice

"That was an absolute bullet.

"Luckily enough for Northern Ireland it was just wide and we live to fight another three minutes or so."

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Grzegorz Krychowiak smashes an absolute thunderbolt from 30 yards out but it goes just wide.

That was close to a second for Poland.

"What a clever free-kick. He's inches away from making a vital touch. There's a little bit of nervousness about Poland in the closing stages,"

CLOSE!

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Oh, that was so close from Steven Davis. The Northern Ireland captain is inches away from connecting onto the end of a low free-kick, but he can't quite get to it as he slides in.

The Polish fans are having a right old party in the right-hand side of the stadium.

A huge cheer as Michal Pazdan clears cleanly from an on-rushing Kyle Lafferty.

Paul Cole: I can't see NI scoring a goal in the entire tournament at this rate. No attacking force whatsoever. How did they qualify?

Jeff Hitchings: Reckon NIR will have one decent opportunity before the end.

Shot-a-lot v shot shy

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

That Kyle Lafferty effort was Northern Ireland's first shot of the game, if you discount an earlier blocked effort by Gareth McAuley. Poland (left) have chalked up 16 shots in the same time.

Washington goes close

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Conor Washington provided Northern Ireland's best moment of the game so far a few minutes ago. Almost, almost.

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Kamil Grosicki, who's just come on, fires a powerful shot towards goal and it just nicks the toe of Jonny Evans and goes out for a corner.

The ball bounces about in dangerous territory for Northern Ireland.

Arkadiusz Milik pokes goalwards, but it's saved by the keeper. I think Milik stole the ball from his team-mate Robert Lewandowski in the process.

Strikers, eh?

Holding on, just

Almost curtains for Northern Ireland. Here's that chance from Jakub Błaszczykowski.

SUBSTITUTION

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

A couple of changes as the game draws to a close.

Northern Ireland bring on Jamie Ward for Chris Baird.

Tomasz Jodlowiec is on for Poland, in place of Krzysztof Maczynski and Jakub Blaszczykowski is replaced by Kamil Grosicki.

Woah, woah, woah. Kyle Lafferty's attempting a bicycle kick!

The Northern Ireland striker controls slowly on his chest, from just outside the box, and goes for the showboat.

It's not a bad effort! But it does go over.

Record breaker

Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland

At 22 years and 104 days, Arkadiusz Milik is the youngest ever scorer for Poland at a European Championship.

What were you doing at the same age?

I was working in caravan insurance. Heady days.

Sense we'll see a lot of Kapustka in the coming years. Deliciously talented 19 year old.

Remember: The literal translation of Kapustka is "little cabbage".

Gerry Taggart

Former Northern Ireland captain in Nice

"That was a fantastic bit of play from Washington. His second or third touch was just too far out of his feet and you have to give Szczesny a bit of credit."

Jakub Blaszczykowski, who has been productive for Poland, cuts the ball across the Northern Ireland box but no-one picks it up.

And then another yellow card is shown - this time it's Craig Cathcart for a rather heavy challenge on Robert Lewandowski.

Stuart Dallas sends a long ball in and it's headed behind.

Northern Ireland have a corner! Northern Ireland have a corner! This is not a drill!

The corner is sent in...but it comes to nothing. Wojciech Szczesny punches it away. A let down.

"Northern Ireland have got to come up with a Plan B pretty soon if they are going to get back into the game."

Good build-up to the goal, Jonny Evans (5) intercepted Lukasz Piszczek's pass but Poland picked it up quickly and now they have the lead which they perhaps deserved.
