So it is advantage Atletico heading into next week but Bayern Munich are from out of this tie.

Whatever happens, it promises to be a fascinating encounter.

That's it from us but I'll be back for a bit of Europa League action tomorrow, with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at Villarreal. It should be a good 'un. See you later.

  2. 'The tie is still open'

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, speaking to BT Sport: "The first half was very close to what we wanted. In the second half they were better and got in behind but we felt comfortable, we defended well.

"You always want to score goals, they can come at any chance. It was a great piece of individual skill with lots of creativity, he (Saul Niguez) is developing well which is great for us.

"I think it's still an open tie, they will be playing at home next week with their fans behind them but we have the chance to get an away goal. It'll be a close game like today, we’ll see who makes the most of their chances."

Jack Dagger: Atletico remind me of Mourinho's Inter - great work ethic and impossible to beat! They too kept out Peps tiki-taka in the semi-finals.

  5. Post update

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola: "Their goal is a brilliant goal, but it’s our mistake. We kept standing off. I’m not happy with how we played.

"It was a good game overall, but we started badly. The goal was a consequence of our slow play."

  6. A few stats...

    • Saul has scored nine goals in all competitions this season, more than any other Atletico midfielder.

  8. 'Our game is our game'

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann: "Saul scored a ‘golasso’. We're very happy with a win. In the second half, we saw that Bayern are a great team. It was better for us when we came back to 4-4-2. It may be not so nice to see from the stand or in TV but our game is our game: defend strongly."

  9. 'A really beautiful goal'

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis, speaking to BT Sport: "We are really happy but we know nothing is done yet. This tie is totally open. I could say it's 50-50 because we know they are strong at home, where their pitch is really fast. We have to be humble and give everything we have to reach that final, which is our dream.

"When we scored we felt we had to protect the lead, the team went a bit back, they had some chances but we feel comfortable defending that way.

"He (Saul Niguez) is in a brilliant moment. He is a good guy, he's young but with his feet on the ground, today he had no fear, he went one-on-one with everyone. I think it was a really beautiful goal, one of the best in this Champions League."

Chris Green, Huddersfield: Atletico may have used that miraculous home record to good measure again tonight, but Bayern have their own remarkable record in home games, so watch out Atletico!

  11. 'Better after the break'

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's David Alaba: "We did very well in the second half. We created a lot of chances, but in the end it wasn't enough."

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer: "We showed more aggression and courage in the second half. We were missing that in the first."

  12. 'We are never afraid'

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, speaking to BT Sport: "We played to win. To score a goal and not concede. In the end we finished well, 1-0, but we know there will be a tough (second) game. We need to be 100% with the head already. Now we have La Liga on Saturday and on Tuesday against them (Bayern),.

"It was very important to score that goal, Saul did a great job. Bayern are an amazing team with amazing players, but all our players showed we can stop them and I hope that in the next game we will do it again. We respect them but we never have fear."

Could Atletico Madrid exact revenge on Bayern Munich for that European cup final defeat back in 1974? They've certainly taken a big step towards doing that.

If they score in the return leg, I wouldn't fancy Bayern's chances of scoring three goals against Atletico's defence.

That defence, by the way, has kept 33 clean sheets this season. Thirty three. That's ridiculous.

  17. 'Doing our thing'

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres: "It was a fantastic night and I’m happy for all Atleticos. We’ve got the lead we wanted.

"We kept fighting, that's what we do. Bayern have a level few teams have but we kept on doing our thing."

    Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

It sets things up for a fascinating encounter at Allianz Arena next Tuesday. Bayern, like Atletico, have been strong defensively at home. They haven't conceded in any of their previous four games, scoring seven goals along the way.
