  1. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

    Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"At 1-0 up at half time you have to manage the game which Liverpool failed to do. We have seen it so many times over the course of season, the left-back Moreno is good at getting forward but he cannot defend.

"There were no referee decisions that went against Liverpool in the second half. They can't blame the result on that. They had one stonewall penalty in the first half but when you go in 1-0 up at half-time in a cup final what is first thing anyone says in the dressing room? You make sure you don't concede in the first 10 or 20 minutes. What did Liverpool do? They conceded in first 17 seconds."

  2. CHAMPAGNE MOMENT

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Sevilla's players, coaching team, the laundry staff, the tea lady...they're all up on the podium at St-Jakob Park to collect the Europa League. That hefty silver cup, fixed onto a yellow marble plinth, is handed over to Sevilla skipper Coke who needs the help of a team-mate or two to hoist it towards the Swiss sky. Not surprising really - it weighs a whopping 15kg!

  3. We didn't do it - Milner

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Liverpool captain James Milner: "We never started in the second half and it is devastating. We didn't show near our ability and that is the biggest disappointment.

"We were ready, we made sure we said the right things at half-time. We gave a sloppy goal away and never got back into the game.

"The lineman's flag went up for the third goal but the referee gave it the other way. It is nothing to do with the referee, it is about us. We didn't do it on the night that mattered.

"We didn't think about the Champions League, it was about winning this trophy. We didn't manage to get over the line. It is a double blow not to be in Europe next season. We go into two finals and lost both, next time we need to finish the job.

"We have showed our character in the competition but today we could not do that."

  4. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Liverpool, led by a miserable-looking Jurgen Klopp, go up the St-Jakob Park steps to collect their losing medals. On the pitch, Sevilla's players are jumping up and down, singing away in a celebratory huddle.

  5. 'Never turned up in second half'

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

    Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"Liverpool had the better of the first half and it was a great goal by Daniel Sturridge. But they never started the second half and if anything got worse. They didn't even have a bright spell after the interval - not even five minutes."

  6. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

"We didn't do ourselves justice," says Liverpool captain James Milner. Gracious interview from the Leeds-born midfielder after such a dismal night. I'd have told the TV guys where to go...

    More quotes from Milner shortly.

  7. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

We knew it was win or bust for Liverpool. Unfortunately for them it is bust. No Europa League trophy, no Champions League football next season. In fact, no European football at all for Jurgen Klopp's side. That's his Plan A summer shopping spree ripped up and thrown in the swing bin.

  8. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

    Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"Liverpool conceding so early in the second half certainly helped Sevilla. They had the momentum and all of a sudden you are thinking 'Liverpool looked a good side in the first half. They are not at it'."

    Coke celebrates
  9. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Jurgen Klopp's trademark smile is, unsurprisingly, nowhere to be seen. The big German growls at referee Jonas Eriksson as he comes onto the pitch to console his players.

  10. FULL-TIME

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Game over. Sevilla win the Europa League for the third successive season! Heartbreak for Liverpool. Tears in the stands, tears on the pitch. Emre Can breaks down with his shirt pulled over his streaming eyes..

  11. SUBSTITUTION

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Sevilla waste some more seconds by bringing on Sebastian Cristoforo. The Spanish fans are giving it the 'Oles!' as their team pass the ball around inside the Liverpool half. Nathaniel Clyne loses his rag and hacks down a Sevilla player. Booking. But it doesn't matter now...almost over.

  12. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Nah. Not happening. Emre Can and Dejan Lovren both try to stick their heads on James Milner's set-piece, but they fail and Sevilla clear.

  13. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Liverpool win another corner. A goal here would do nicely...

  14. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Oh dear. Groans from the Liverpool fans as James Milner stretches for a pass that flies past his foot and out for a Sevilla throw-in inside their own half.

Four minutes of injury-time. Four minutes for Liverpool to produce footballing miracle...

    James Milner
  15. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Sevilla make a late tactical change. Tactical because it runs down the clock. Vicente Iborra replaces opening scorer Kevin Gameiro. High fives all round from the Sevilla camp on the touchline.

  16. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Liverpool listen to our man Lawro and lump it. The problem is Benteke climbs all over his marker and gives away a free-kick. Sevilla rubs their hands with glee. More seconds to be wasted...

    Christian Benteke
  17. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

    Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"There's no point being scientific. Liverpool have got a 6ft 4in centre forward on with Sturridge and Origi either side. Just lump it forward."

  18. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Coke takes an age to climb to his feet. He knows what he is doing. The free-kick is swung in by Ever Banega close to the right touchline, Liverpool clear.

Less than five minutes for the improbable to happen...

  19. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Time slipping away from Liverpool. Alberto Moreno clatters Coke. The Sevilla hero milks it. Every second counts.

  20. Post update

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Christian Benteke is the target as Liverpool go long. His knockdown/miscontrol falls to Daniel Sturridge who lashes a first-time effort from 25 yards. Direction? Yes. Power? No. Comfortable save for David Soria.
