'Never a second yellow'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

West Ham United

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic speaking to BT Sport: “First I would like to praise the team. We showed everything, character, spirit, we deserved to win. The goal we scored was an amazing move from many players.

"For me it was a penalty on Cresswell and then the second yellow card is very harsh – never a second yellow card, never.

“Now that Aaron was back we made a little gamble because we didn’t expect him to be totally match fit, but he had a great game.

“It was straight after the Middlesbrough game that we started to prepare for Palace and also the best system for us that suits all our best players. We came to this system that I really like.

“We need more than one game, more than one win. It is not about the system but much more about the approach and composure we have, how we cover each other and how we close them down.

“We showed how good a team we are and how good a unit we are.”

'Scoring the penalty would have been a lifeline'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew on BBC Sport:

"I was disappointed with a lot of aspects of the game. We didn’t start well and they got a deserved lead. We had to make change at half-time because weren't playing with the fluidity as we have done. We were better in the second half.

"We should have at least got a draw. With the penalty I was thinking with the week Benteke has had it'll go in. That would have been a lifeline and would have turned the game on its head. We would gave gone in 1-1 at half-time. This happens in the course of the season. Adrian made a good save at the end. The Hammers for their faults... you couldn't fault them today defensively."

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

West Ham United

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic is also out, talking to BT. "Never a sending off", he says of Aaron Cresswell's two yellow cards in 51 seconds. More to come - when Harry Redknapp's had his turn that is...

"I thought you were brilliant today Slaven," the former Hammers manager says. (He earlier described Cresswell's sending off as "diabolical, disgusting".

Crystal Palace

Can you guess the first word Alan Pardew uses in his post-match interview? Clue: it begins with 'd'.

"We know we've let this slip. We should at least have got a draw," he adds. Full quotes to come.

'This will lift us'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

West Ham United

West Ham defender Winston Reid speaking to BBC Sport: “We needed it as results haven’t been the best of late, we had a bit of luck on our side. I thought we earned it and showed out there today we are a team all fighting for each other – this result will lift us.

“It was nice that the formation paid off, and I thought we dealt with them as best we could and got forward well as well. We looked 100% as a team and were working hard for each other. We stay humble and keep working hard.

“I thought he (Cresswell) was a little bit harshly done by, but the referee has made a decision and we had to dig in, which we did, and got a fantastic result.”

'Massive three points'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

West Ham United

West Ham captain Mark Noble speaking to BT Sport: “Obviously going down to 10 men seemed like an hour to play but the boys at the back, the whole team, defended well. I’ve been the first to criticise the team and the way we have played, I involved myself in that, but tonight we showed how much it means to us to put a win on the board.

“After the amount of games we’ve played you don’t want to keep talking about injuries, especially wing backs like Cress, who are so important in this day and age. We are going to miss him next week now.

“Those three points were massive for everyone who works at the club.”

No way a sending off - cresswell was fouled by cabeye for a penalty and 2nd challenge only a foul

James Sanders: West Ham have been lacking team-spirit, fight and desire all season but today we saw it in abundance. Well deserved win.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

And how will Christian Benteke be feeling now? He missed a penalty with an awful strike just before the break, hit the outside of the post with a header moments afterwards - and he should have scored later in the match after Adrian's mistake at a corner.

A long night.

'Deserved win for West Ham'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Terry Butcher

Ex-England captain at Selhurst Park for BBC Radio 5 live

West Ham were the better side and had to dig in when Aaron Cresswell was sent off. They deserved the victory. Winston Reid had the game of his life. They passed it better than Palace who were guilty of not getting good balls into the box. If they can play like this in the rest of the campaign they'll have a good season.

'Winston Reid a colossus'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Terry Butcher

Ex-England captain at Selhurst Park for BBC Radio 5 live

It hasn't gone Palace's way but it has been of their own making with the way they are set up to play.

West Ham's defence mopped up everything pretty well.

It's all been very direct from Palace which has been too easy to deal with. That bit of quality missing today. Winston Reid was a colossus at the back for West Ham.

FULL-TIME

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

A deft, brilliant touch from Manuel Lanzini for the first-half goal, a remarkable reflex stop from goalkeeper Adrian to keep the points safe in stoppage time.

West Ham have their first win in six games. But there was real controversy over the Aaron Cresswell sending off.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Connor Wickham cannot understand it. Surely that was in. West Ham launch it away.

Steve Mandanda hoofs forward, but the Hammers win it back. Deep in Palace territory, they should see it home...

GREAT SAVE!

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Simply fantastic save by Adrian to deny Connor Wickham's at the back post. The Spaniard tips over from point-blank range - and may well have won this for his West Ham side...

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

There's frustration in the crowd as Palace look to work space at the back, searching for the angle for a deep cross at the back. Benteke's always a danger...

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

FOUR minutes added on...

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Everyone is back in the West Ham half.

Can Palace conjure something? Cabaye launches up to Benteke, his flick down causes a moment of panic before Ogbonna clears. It's drilled back in from the right wing and Palace have a corner - even though the last touch came off Benteke I think?

Either way, it's claimed by Adrian. Much better this time from the Hammers stopper.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Jonathan Calleri expertly wins a free-kick just inside the Palace half to give his side a chance of seeing these final minutes out. The final change for West Ham comes now, too. Tick goes the clock and off goes Manuel Lanzini, Havard Nordtveit the man to add steel in midfield in his place.

Palace need a chance...

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Huge groan from the Palace fans as Christian Benteke shapes to strike a volley home but mis-times it horribly.

Simone Zaza's been full of running up top and his replacement Jonathan Calleri will now do more of the same for the Hammers.

Just under five to go.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Horrible refereeing! Never a dive, it was a penalty. And not a 2nd yellow. Cresswell badly treated.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

The home fans cajoling their team forward. Andors Townsend dallying on the edge of the box. Jason Puncheon's cross is over-hit.

There has to be better to come if Palace are going to find an equaliser.

But there'll be plenty of people who feel West Ham have already been harshly done by - with Aaron Cresswell sent off for two yellow cards in under a minute, the first of which for simulation.

Ash Jung: Cresswell getting a yellow card for being fouled, then sent off for a second yellow card in a minute. Are you watching FA?

Loudly Curious: Those two fouls together should never have amounted to a red card. Very harsh on Cresswell.

HPD JK: Not a dive (touch from defender) and not enough contact at the other end for a yellow. Joke.

CLOSE!

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Christian Benteke has to score! Adrian commits to claim a corner and gets it horribly wrong, leaving his goal totally open as the ball lands on the Palace striker's head...

But it's over the bar! There'll be more...

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

This is going to be an intriguing last 10 minutes here. Hang on to your hats.

SUBSTITUTION

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Off goes Dimitri Payet. He's replaced by Edmilson Fernandes, who's an attacking midfielder, so not exactly a defensive change. Better legs to track back?

'Referee got decision wrong'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Terry Butcher

Ex-England captain at Selhurst Park for BBC Radio 5 live

The second yellow card for Aaron Cresswell you can't argue with really but the first one? That's not similation or diving for me. The referee has got it completely wrong. It' s had major ramifications because West Ham were in control of the game and now there's going to be bombardment on their goal.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

A truly remarkable couple of minutes.

Can Palace take advantage? Just under 15 minutes for them to get an equaliser...

RED CARD

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Incredible! Aaron Cresswell is off for a second yellow card - just moments after getting booked for diving, he's penalised for a foul on Wilfried Zaha and is off for an early bath.

West Ham won't be happy about that one...

CLOSE!

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Off the line! Dimitri Payet's driven cross is headed towards goal by Michail Antonio and cleared away by Jason Puncheon!

Then Aaron Cresswell is booked for a dive in the box, looking for a penalty off the challenge of Yohan Cabaye.

I tell you what, it looks like it could have been a pen...

Dimitri Payet
Reuters

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Dimitri Payet bursts out of a quiet spell to glide towards goal, laying the ball off to Pedro Obiang to blaze against a set of Palace legs. Corner ball. How the Hammers need this win. Can they add to their lead?

SUBSTITUTION

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

The last change for Palace. Midfielder James McArthur is off, with Connor Wickham joining fellow bruising big man Christian Benteke up front in Alan Pardew's final gamble.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

West Ham seem to know they've got to keep a lid on this. Mark Noble's got his arms waving, directing his players to slow it up, keep it safe. He launches himself into a full-blooded 50-50 with Jason Puncheon that in slow-mo wouldn't look out of place in Gladiator.

Palace aren't lying down, but any momentum is shelved for now as Andros Townsend walks the ball out of play with a poor touch taking down a throw-in down the line.

'Final ball letting Palace down'

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Terry Butcher

Ex-England captain at Selhurst Park for BBC Radio 5 live

The final ball from Crystal Palace is what's letting them down at the moment. It's pretty much one-way traffic in the other direction now, with Palace growing in confidence.

PENALTY APPEAL

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Wilfried Zaha and the leaping Palace fans behind Adrian's goal want a penalty - his shirt was being pulled by Aaron Cresswell. No dice. Perhaps the referee noticed Zaha's equally strong tug of his marker's top too.

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Awful. Andros Townsend's taking it. A great position to cross for Christian Benteke, but it's played short to right-back Joel Ward, who appears to try and chip the keeper with his left foot. If I'm honest, it was difficult to tell exactly what they thought was going to happen there.

YELLOW CARD

Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham

Angelo Ogbonna knows Wilfried Zaha's got the better of him on the right wing and the West Ham man can only haul the Palace forward down. Yellow. Free-kick.
