  2. 'The players are doing their best'

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

Some more quotes from David Moyes' interview with BBC Sport after Sunderland's 4-1 loss to Arsenal.

He says: "Once we get one or two of the injured players back, that will give us some more options and that will give us a better chance. The message is the players are giving everything they can. It was not through the lack of effort, or the lack of trying, they played a team with a lot of quality.

"We are not in a good position and need to play better. The players are doing their best, but you will only ever be judged by your results."

  3. 'At 1-1 we were the better team'

    Sunderland 1-1 Arsenal

    Sunderland

And here is the Sunderland manager, David Moyes, with his views on the match.

He tells BBC Sport: "It was tough to take and I certainly didn't think we deserved to lose 4-1. We put up a really good show to stick with Arsenal when they were good.

"We fought really hard to stay in the game and we grew into the game. We were the better team at one each, but they have that quality.

"If you lose goals to Arsenal with great interplay then you hold your hands up but I'm disappointed we lost two goals to crosses."

Not much love for David Moyes out there, but plenty for Big Sam Allardyce...

James Bisrat: Sunderland does not have any chance to stay in this league under Moyes. They can turn their season by bringing Big Sam back.

Yinka Afolabi: Big Sam got this Sunderland side fighting last season! David Moyes surely doesn't have the belly for a premier league battle.

Sam Budhdev: Finally, a scoreline for Arsenal that reflects the match. Sunderland terrible, how has Moyes managed to destroy a Big Sam side?

  5. 'I was worried we could lose'

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

Some quotes from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who tells BBC Sport: "It was a mental test when we were at 1-1. We missed so many chances, so many opportunities and I was worried we could lose, but we have shown great strength to bounce back.

"In the Premier League at 1-1 you can lose the game but it was about how we responded. Do we panic, give up, feel sorry for ourselves? We responded well and in the end it was a comfortable win.

"It was an important result for us. We had six wins, then one draw at home which was disappointing and a second draw or defeat would have been like we had dropped our level."

On his substitution where he introduced Olivier Giroud, who then scored twice in the next seven minutes, Wenger added: "The manager has an easy credit when he has quality players on the bench and you don't need to be a special manager to make this decision. It was 1-1 and we had Giroud on the bench."

  6. And the bottom of the table...

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

Ten games, two points, already five behind the team in 17th.

Probably best if Sunderland fans don't look at the table. And don't do so for the next few months as well.

Statistically Sunderland have had a terrible start to the season.

There's no anger from the fans any more, it was just a terrible capitulation.

Sunderland have a number of players in that midfield that simply aren't good enough. They look like a Championship side, at best.

Matt in Liverpool: Moyes has to go. I've never seen such a directionless Sunderland team with no passion. Moyes has looked clueless.

Ken in Newcastle: If Sunderland can convince the Premier league to award points for the quickest and safest emptying of a stadium they might just stay up!

Daniel from Belfast: Sunderland should sack David Moyes.

You can dress it up as cleverly as you want, Daniel from Belfast is going to cut straight to the heart of the matter.

  10. FULL-TIME

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

It is all over, with Arsenal showing their superiority after teasing everyone and letting Sunderland think they had a chance.

Alexis Sanchez's diving header put the visitors ahead but, seconds after they were denied what looked a clear penalty, Jermain Defoe equalised with a spot-kick after Duncan Watmore had been fouled by Petr Cech.

But Gunners substitute Olivier Giroud made an instant impact, scoring twice in five minutes before Sanchez added a fourth from close range.

Arsenal go top, Sunderland stay bottom, with safety looking a long, long way off.

  11. Arsenal best in the league?

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

    Pat Nevin

Ex-Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I suspect at the moment Arsenal are arguably playing the best football in the league.

But it's a long season, and the only question mark over them today has been about them having the right mindset, and for 20 minutes today they weren't good enough.

They always say that there are no easy games in the Premier League - yeah there is, Arsenal have had one today.

  12. Post update

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

There are still some hardy Sunderland fans who have stayed to the bitter end of this one, but it is going to be a long, hard winter for them.

Three minutes of added time and the only surprise today is that Sunderland have managed to score. Defensively though they have been awful.

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, a 19-year-old midfielder, gets only his second Premier League appearance as Arsenal use the opportunity to give the youngster a taste of the big time.

Gary Hunter: Our inability to defend has us doomed.

Mat VP: Sunderland need to be sponsored by Jenga. Nothing falls quicker in football than Sunderland when they concede.

Desmond Oguda: This Sunderland side can't buy a win! Surely Moyes isn't to blame. This is a perennial Sunderland problem!

Jonny Brook: This Sunderland collapse is even more epic and speedy than the pound as a currency when the leave vote won the Brexit battle.

  15. Could it have been more?

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

    Pat Nevin

Ex-Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

If Arsenal had played at full tempo for the whole 90 minutes, what could the score have been?

They've just decided to turn it on and ripped Sunderland apart. And it's been absolutely easy.

Sunderland have worked quite hard in this second half, but it's had nothing to do with them, it's been everything to do with Arsenal, and how hard they've tried.

Thorin in London: Don't feel like such a numpty for still liking Giroud and wearing my Arsenal shirt with his name on the back. Showing his good side today.

I'd say that today was an excellent day to pull that number out of the wardrobe, Thorin.

  17. Post update

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

It is the hope that kills you.

Sunderland had got an undeserved and unexpected way back into the game but have simply capitulated since Jermain Defoe had made it 1-1. But the scoreline is nothing less than the Gunners have merited.

Arsenal are heading top, although a big Manchester City win against West Brom would take Pep Guardiola's side back to the summit later this afternoon.

  18. Effortless from Arsenal

    Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

    Pat Nevin

Ex-Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Arsenal had to change the tempo of the game, we asked whether they were capable of that.

Well they were effortlessly capable of it.

I would say that between now and that goal being scored, at least half of the stadium has emptied.

  19. GOAL Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal

    Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)

What a crazy spell of action this has been. Alexis Sanchez gets his second goal of the game, Arsenal their fourth and their third goal in the last six minutes and 20 seconds.

Firstly Kieran Gibbs saw a shot bounce off the foot of the post, Aaron Ramsey, who has just come on for his first action since the opening day of the season, has an effort blocked and the ball falls to Sanchez who tucks in from close range.

  20. 'Giroud the best in the business'

    Sunderland 1-3 Arsenal

    Pat Nevin

Ex-Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Giroud is so good at getting across defenders, I think he's the best in the business at that. That is a magnificent goal.

He's certainly got his account opened now, he's well on the way.
