Scotland defence 'fragile'

Rob Maclean

BBC Scotland

Gordon Strachan reckons that could turn out to be a good point for Scotland in the final analysis. I hope he's right but I can't see it myself at the moment. If tonight wasn't Must-Win, as we were being told, then Tuesday in Slovakia certainly is now. Any more points spilled and the party's over. Maybe it is already.

Scotland didn't create enough cast-iron chances against Lithuania from plenty great attacking positions. The central striking position is a problem.

The manager thought Chris Martin was outstanding. I'm not sure there would be too much agreement on that. And our central defence is fragile. Too easily opened up and the Lithuanians could have gone away with all three points rather than just the one.

Lithuania seek 'miracle'

FT: Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

Lithuania coach Edgaras Jankauskas: "We are proud of our display and I'm proud of my team. In some periods, we were successful in cancelling their main weapons."

Can they finish above Scotland in Group F? "It would be a miracle."

"it was a fair result. At points it was like a battlefield with elbows flying."

'It's a strange group'

FT: Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

"In the second half we were the far better side," Scotland manager Gordon Strachan tells the media conference at Hampden.

"We'll only find out later on if it's a good point. It's a strange, strange group."

'Some brave performances'

FT: Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

"A factor in the game is missing chances," says Strachan in response to a question about Lithuanian time-wasting in the second half.

"Some good performances tonight... some brave performances."

Strachan also praises striker Chris Martin for an "outstanding" display. Scotland were unlucky not to win the game, the manager adds.

'It might be a good point' - Strachan

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan says the first half was like a game in the English Championship.

The second half, he says, was much better. He congratulates his side for scoring the equaliser.

"It might be a good point in the end," Strachan adds.

Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia

Alasdair Lamont

BBC Sport Scotland in Slovenia

A deserved win for the Slovenians against a poor Slovakia outfit. If Scotland are to take any solace from this evening's proceedings perhaps some can be derived from the Slovakian performance here in Ljubljana. That said, it makes victory in Trnava all the more vital for the home side, which might work against the Scots, themselves desperate for a win.

Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia

Alasdair Lamont

BBC Sport Scotland in Slovenia

Slovenia recorded a deserved victory over their more illustrious opponents to set up a top-of-the-group clash with England on Tuesday.

The group's fourth seeds had the better of the game throughout and saw their pressure pay off when Rok Kronaveter came off the bench to score.

The result moves them on to four points, level with Scotland and two points behind Gareth Southgate's side.

Slovakia - seeded second behind England - have no points from their opening two games.

Too little, too late...

FT: Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

Scotland almost scrambled a late, late winner out of that. But it was all a bit huff and puff and not a great night for Gordon Strachan's team. Someone tell me how we can still qualify after failing to win at home against Lithuania.

Point saved

FT: Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

Richard Wilson

BBC Scotland at Hampden

A point salvaged by Scotland, but the frustrations were evident. Fans booed at the end, while Gordon Strachan spent the closing moments of the game growing ever more irked at the time wasting of the Lithuanians. Not as bad as it might have been, but leaves Scotland chasing points from away games to recover.

CLOSE!

Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

Cleared off the line! Chris Martin's header looks to be drifting into the net but Lithuania somehow scramble clear.

Gordon Strachan can't believe it and the Scotland fans look on in wild-eyed disbelief.

PENALTY APPEAL

Howls and roars envelope Hampden as Scotland substitute Leigh Griffiths takes a tumble in the box but referee Tobias Stieler, with an operatic shake of the head, is having none of it.

GOAL Scotland 1-1 Lithuania (McArthur)

They've done it! It's all square as substitute James McArthur heads home from close range after Callum Paterson's is flicked on by Grant Hanley. Suddenly, Hampden is aflame. Can Scotland get a second?

Ok, willing to accept it's not a Must-Win now. Any chance of a draw?

Scotland 0-1 Lithuania

Andrew Robertson, arguably Scotland's best performer tonight, sees his cross cleared for a corner. Barry Bannon's corner deep into the box sees Robert Snodgrass rise highest in the box... but his header drifts harmlessly over the bar.
