BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016

  4. 'He is an African football legend'

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016

Steven Pienaar: He deserves to be there. He didn't have the best of seasons by his standards but still helped City finish third and won the League Cup.

Eni Aluko: He is one of the African legends.

  5. Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast & Manchester City)

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016 shortlist

    Yaya Toure

The 33-year-old won his second BBC award last year - will he make it three?

Despite being out of favour under new Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola it looks like he might be back in the thinking of the Spaniard having recently apologised for "misunderstandings".

Under previous boss Manuel Pellegrini he scored the winning penalty against Liverpool in the League Cup final and helped City reach the Champions League semis.

  6. Our final nominee is...

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016

    It can only be...

  7. 'Aubameyang in one of the world's most exciting'

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016

Steven Pienaar: To win footballer of the year in Germany is not easy. He was the only African player challenging Barcelona's Luis Suarez for top scorer in Europe.

Eni Aluko: Aubameyang is one of the most exciting players in the world. There's a lot of speculation about where he will go next.

  8. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon & Borussia Dortmund)

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016 shortlist

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

This 27-year-old has been outstanding for German club Borussia Dortmund since joining them in 2013.

The Gabonese player scored 25 goals for the Bundesliga club as they secured the runners-up spot during the 2015-16 campaign despite a poor start.

Recent reports suggested Arsenal bid £80m for the forward in the summer - if Paul Pogba's worth more then...

  11. 'Ayew will come back stronger'

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016

Lomana LuaLua: It's a shame he's been injured. He'll come back stronger and show what a good player he is.

Steven Pienaar: To have so many good footballers in one family is a gift from God. His father (Abedi Pele is the first winner of the award) was one of the greatest African footballers of all time.

  12. Andre Ayew (Ghana & West Ham)

BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016 shortlist

    Andre Ayew

Andre Ayew, winner of Afoty in 2011, was a player in demand in the summer when West Ham paid Swansea City a club record £20.5m for the striker.

Last season he scored three goals in the opening month to earn the Premier League player of the month award en route to helping the Swans secure top flight status.

A thigh injury has affected his Hammers career to date, but a fully fit Ayew could be the boost the struggling London side have been looking for.
