  1. Good night

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

That's all from me folks. Celtic's hopes of progressing in Europe were snuffed out by a Lionel Messi double.

Join us again at the weekend for Scottish Premiership action and Sunday's League Cup final.

  2. Messi makes the difference

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

A Spanish journalist asks Brendan Rodgers would Celtic have won if Lionel Messi was playing for them?

"We would have had a big chance," laughs the Celtic boss.

  3. 'I didn't think it was a penalty'

    Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

"I didn't think it was a penalty. What Luis Suarez is brilliant at is he provokes defenders. He's leaning in to Emilio (Izaguirre) who is trying to fight for his space. He grabs a hold of him and spins round. It was a key moment of game because we were pressing and the momentum. The referee didn't give us so much throughout the night."

  4. 'No fear from Celtic'

    More from Brendan Rodgers

"This experience was always going to invaluable. We have lots of young players in the team.

    "We weren't fearful tonight.

"We've gradually got better in this competition and now it's about maintaining those standards and making sure we are in this competition year after year."

  5. Rodgers pleased with improvement

    Celtic manager Bredan Rodgers

"As a coach you are looking for improvement and we saw that.

"We pressed high with good energy and we were defensively solid. Barcelona didn't have as many chances as they normally create.

"The first goal is disappointing, we switch off in the box.

"We were always in the game and we had a big chance with the header, then we get punished with the penalty.

"We still fight, we keep working but it's difficult when they keep the ball so well."

  6. More magic from Messi

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

Lionel Messi has played four Champions League games this season. He's scored nine goals and chipped in with three assists. Not bad.

  7. McDonald comes to Dembele's defence

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

The BBC Sportsound team are discussing the golden chance Moussa Dembele missed at 1-0. "There was no pace on the ball and that makes it difficult," says Scott McDonald, spokesman for the striker's union.

"Dembele was feeding on scraps all night," adds Alan Stubbs. "It wasn't an easy chance and if he had a second go at it he would probably chose to glance it."

Moments after Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved from Dembele's close range header, Lionel Messi was knocking in his second goal from the penalty spot.

Moussa Dembele could not net with a good headed chance
  8. Celtic shift focus to League Cup final

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

Celtic can't afford to feel sorry for themselves after tonight's European exit since there is a very big game coming up on Sunday.

The first silverware of the season is up for grabs at Hampden, with Aberdeen the opponents in the League Cup final.

There may be a few sore legs after all the running done against Barcelona and just a few days to recover.

  9. 'First goal always key'

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

"It was a big blow losing Scott Sinclair at half-time," says BBC Sportsound Scott McDonald. "He's one that make things happen in tight situations and I'd like to have seen him and James Forrest attacking down the flanks in the second half.

"The first goal is so important. As soon as a team like Barcelona go 1-0 up they are so comfortable."

  10. 'Celtic can compete at this level'

Celtic captain Scott Brown on BT Sport

"We played really well and showed that we can compete in the Champions League.

"It was difficult after losing a soft penalty and going 2-0 to a team that can keep the ball so well.

"It's been a learning curve and we've shown we can create chances against the best sides. Hopefully we'll be back next season."

  11. Post update

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

There's no shame in losing out to Lionel Messi & co and few gave Celtic much chance of progress in a group that also contained big-spending Manchester City.

The result that will hurt Brendan Rodgers was the 2-0 home loss to Borussia Monchengladbach.

  12. What next?

    FT: Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

Celtic have nothing but pride and prize money to play for when they go to Manchester City in a fortnight's time.

City are already guaranteed second place, so we might not get another frenzied 3-3.

  13. FULL-TIME Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

That's Celtic's fifth defeat of the season and they've all come in this competition.

Barcelona clinch top spot in Group C and ease into the last 16 for the 13th successive season.

  14. FULL-TIME Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Manchester City

"This is awful," says BBC Radio 5 Live summariser Pat Nevin as the game fizzles out with Manchester City happy with a point.

It is not good news for Celtic though, who can now no longer qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League or drop into the Europa League.

  15. Post update

    Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

Moussa Dembele slaloms his way to the edge of the Barcelona box only to lose his footing. It kind of sums up the evening for Celtic.

  16. Post update

    Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

We're moving into four minutes of stoppage time.

  17. Post update

    Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

It's like a training exercise now but Stuart Armstrong hasn't got the memo as he has a hack at Lionel Messi near the halfway line. A booking all day long.

Ivan Rakitic then collects a yellow card for a tug at James Forrest. Classic gamesmanship from a player who will be suspended for the final group game, along with Neymar.

These guys are even good at getting bans...

  18. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Celtic 0-2 Barcelona

Lionel Messi does his gliding with the ball glued to his toes thing as he scoots past three Celtic defenders and lays off an unselfish pass to Luis Suarez right in front of goal but his strike partner can only shoot against the outside of the post.
