Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal told Sky Sports: "During the week before the game, we're Sheff Wed, We have principles, we're not an easy team to break down.

"We can draw, lose or win but we will fight, we prepared well, we knew exactly what we must do.

"This is a sign we create clear chances to score, for my players it was fantastic in the plan we created. they deserved the three points and our fans were fantastic."

What's next?

FT: Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Well, Newcastle are back at home on Friday, 30 December to Nottingham Forest... plenty of spice about that one after the previous meeting.

Not too much of a turn around either...

Sheffield Wednesday go to Preston North End on New Year's Eve.

Did Newcastle miss Shelvey?

FT: Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

There was not a lot of incisive play from Newcastle tonight, and the obvious solution might have been the absent Jonjo Shelvey - out for five games through suspension.

However John Anderson, former Newcastle defender and BBC Newcastle pundit, says that's an excuse.

"He's just one player. Whether he'd have made the difference for the other 10 players, I don't think so."

Five wins in six for the Owls

FT: Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

It will be no consolation to Newcastle fans, or those with bets hinging on this game, but Sheffield Wednesday are no dummies.

Five wins in the last six now have put them in the play-off mix, and they will end 2016 in the top six and on course to repeat their efforts for promotion to the Premier League.

Well organised, hard to break down and good on the break, it's a good recipe for success.

FULL-TIME

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Thoroughly professional display by Sheffield Wednesday, coming to Newcastle United - the league leaders - and coming away with three points.

Glenn Loovens won the match with his header in the second-half, and the deficit might have been greater had Karl Darlow not made a string of saves.

Newcastle failed to truly create against the Owls, and Dwight Gayle's post-rattling first-half shot was the best they managed.

Plenty for Rafael Benitez to ponder, for Carlos Carvalhal, it's a tactical masterclass.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Ciaran Clark is tempted into the foul by Wednesday and that will probably be that.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

He's an awkward looking customer isn't he? Atdhe Nuhiu. Just won a throw down in Newcastle's full-back position.

Last minute of added time...

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Newcastle pepper the Wednesday box but the ball is cleared and the visitors break. Just ticking down the clock, well away from their goalmouth.

It's not pretty but if you're an Owls fan, who cares.

They're wasting some time - as Ross Wallace is replaced by Atdhe Nuhiu.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Newcastle are being frustrated by Sheffield Wednesday.

They're happy to allow the Magpies to dominate possession in the hope they can hold them out...

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

SIX MINUTES OF ADDED TIME?!

Sheffield Wednesday have a nervy wait for the final whistle...

Dwight Gayle

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

...and it's thumped into the wall. Newcastle do have a throw though just up around half-way.

Newcastle need to get the ball forward but Sheffield Wednesday do enough. Corner.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Free-kick on the edge of the box for Newcastle after Aleksandar Mitrovic is fouled!

Big chance...

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Steven Fletcher is receiving treatment from physios, but that doesn't stop him being met by a chorus of boos,

He gingerly makes his way off the pitch and we will resume. Ball is with Keiren Westwood, and he sends it long downfield.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Ross Wallace hobbling around after a coming together with Vurnon Anita but it didn't stop Paul Tierney dishing him out a yellow card.

Newcastle fans booing as Steven Fletcher stays down injured. Gamesmanship? I'm saying nowt.

CLOSE!

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Almost an immediate impact from Aleksandar Mitrovic, who sends his header toward goal but finds Keiren Westwood at his sharpest.

Closer for Newcastle. Wednesday look solid though.

SUBSTITUTION

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Aleksandar Mitrovic comes on for the hosts, Jack Colback coming off.

For Sheffield Wednesday, David Jones is brought on, Barry Bannan makes his way to the bench.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Sam Hutchinson finds himself in the book for a foul and in turn gets a yellow card.

Newcastle throwing big effort at this now.

Lucas Joao comes on for Fernando Forestieri as Sheffield Wednesday freshen things up too. Few whistles for the pantomime villain of the night.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Ciaran Molloy has been in touch on #bbcefl and I think he's probably speaking for a few people when he says this current scoreline is spoiling his bet.

Newcastle are at least trying to get something out of this game and indirectly help out Ciaran.

Christian Atsu has Keiren Westwood scrambling. Tip over. Corner. Comes to nothing.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Dwight Gayle

Looking at Newcastle spreading the ball about quite serenely, it's clear they're quite confident they can find a way past this Sheffield Wednesday side.

However, Wednesday aren't standing on ceremony and are breaking things up the minute they get into a dangerous position.

The Owls' execution with the ball and Karl Darlow, are keeping Newcastle just a goal behind at the moment.

SUBSTITUTION

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Christian Atsu makes his way onto the field, the diving header was Yoan Gouffran's last contribution. First change by Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez.

CLOSE!

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Jack Colback and Paul Dummett combine to tee-up Yoan Gouffran for Newcastle whose diving header bobbles wide.

Better from the home side.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Issac Hayden slams a shot over the bar from outside the box. Hopeful rather than expectant for the Newcastle midfielder.

Almost up to the hour, Christian Atsu being primed for the Magpies.

Reaction: Young Leeds "still improving"

FT: Preston 1-4 Leeds

Hadi Sacko and Luke Ayling
Empics

Goals from Kemar Roofe, Hadi Sacko, Souleymane Doukara and Pablo Hernandez helped Leeds win their third consecutive Championship game, beating 10-man Preston 4-1 at Deepdale to stay fifth in the table.

Leeds head coach Garry Monk told BBC Radio Leeds:

"I still think we could have done better if I'm honest, but I can't be too critical, it's very difficult to come here.

"I appreciated the focus and the effort from the players today on both sides of the game, physically and with the ball.

"We're still improving, we still have other things to improve on, but you can see step by step, every time they get on the pitch they get a little bit more confident.

"They learn from the mistakes they make in the past, and that's the most important thing for this young group."

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

What Wednesday have done extremely well in this game, is deny Newcastle space, harry and hassle tirelessly and just be annoyingly niggly.

It's working. Then they break and cause problems.

Newcastle must find another gear, and get Dwight Gayle involved - he's barely had a mention this second-half.

GOAL (Loovens)

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wed

Newcastle v Sheffield Wednesday
Rex Features

Cat among some Magpies here. Ball curled in from the corner by Ross Wallace, Tom Lees sent the first header toward goal that Karl Darlow clawed away...

But Glenn Loovens powered home another header  from close range on the rebound, to put the Owls in front.

Newcastle's luck runs out. Wednesday go in front.

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Vurnon Anita got into the box and rolled another ball across the six yard box which had no-one rushing in. Frustrating for Newcastle.

Then Issac Hayden slid in on Fernando Forestieri. Thundered through him and got a yellow card.

GREAT SAVE!

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Karl Darlow is the hero for Newcastle once again, Steven Fletcher went for goal from Barry Bannan's cross and the goalkeeper blocked with his legs.

Another massive opportunity for the Owls.

HALF-TIME

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Newcastle v Sheffield Wednesday
Rex Features

Newcastle United have certainly had a test in their midst at their St James' Park home, as Sheffield Wednesday have come to spoil the league leaders' Christmas party.

Dwight Gayle walloped the upright with a shot early on in the game, but then his goalkeeper Karl Darlow was called into play to make a trio of fine stops to deny Steven Fletcher in particular.

Neither side has quite found their gear, perhaps as energy beings to subside we'll see substitutes change the way this game will go.

Decent fare though, all things considered.

Two minutes added time

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Some of the fluency has been lost to this game, mainly through indiscipline.

Lots of free-kicks. The midfield has been a slugfest rather than a battle of wits.

Jack Colback skims one low that's easily taken by Keiren Westwood.

Reaction: Terriers' fitness the difference

FT: Huddersfield 2-1 Nottingham Forest

David Wagner
Empics

Kasey Palmer's strike and an own goal from Michael Mancienne helped Huddersfield come from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 and secure their fourth consecutive win in the Championship. Head coach David Wagner had turned down an offer to manage Bundesliga club Wolfsburg earlier this week.

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner told BBC Radio Leeds:

"We kept the speed high, we've shown again how fit and how fresh we are.

"We are always able to accelerate and control the game in the final 30 minutes if we have to, and today we did that.

"I'm very happy that, like in the past, whoever got the starting shirt was able to go out on the pitch and deliver.

"I like Boxing Day if we win, even when I don't understand the British culture not to spend time with your family on Christmas!"

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Fernando Forestieri got a free-kick awarded TO him just then. Ironic cheers from up in the St James' Park heights.

Then Daniel Pudil resumed normal service with Wednesday's 13th foul of the half.

Not long til the break, can someone stake their claim here?

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Fair to say that Wednesday and particularly Fernando Forestieri are putting themselves about a bit.

Newcastle aren't enjoying the physical approach too much. It's getting them off their stride.

Set-pieces aren't working for the Magpies at the moment. Bar the Lascelles effort, their best work has come from open play.

Wednesday have had three very good chances in this first half but they're weathering a bit of a storm right now.

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

It's getting a bit tasty. Wednesday bumped Matt Ritchie to the deck as Newcastle broke and the yellow card and free-kick go against Daniel Pudil.

Wednesday clear from the subsequent break and Newcastle get another corner...

Newcastle 0-0 Sheff Wed

Dwight Gayle
Rex Features

No chance of letting Dwight Gayle go that time, he was clattered from behind. Wednesday don't want him turning.

Jamaal Lascelles gives his thoughts to the referee Paul Tierney - the step-father of Wigan and Scotland rugby league player Lewis Tierney by the way.
