'Our boys were outstanding'

FT: Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

I thought it was a great performance. You have to respect that Middlesbrough are a very, very good side, but I thought our boys were outstanding. I'm delighted because it's a big one - to get eight points clear of them at this stage of the season is fantastic.

How it stands...

BBC Sport

Presumably, Bristol City fans will want a little peek at the state of the Championship's top six?

The Robins have gone third after tonight's win, leapfrogging Sheffield United and Aston Villa and maintaining their five-point gap to seventh.

Boro, down in ninth, remain six points off the top six.

Now we can hear from Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson...

FT: Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

It was a bit different with me and Jamie Paterson up front. We couldn't go long, we had to try getting the perfect goal and thankfully in the second half we got a couple.

Bobby ReidBristol City striker on Sky Sports

FT: Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

People are still underestimating us and long may that continue. We're turning Ashton Gate into a fortress.

Bristol City pair Bobby Reid and Joe Bryan are primed and ready to speak to the television people, so we'll be hearing from them in just a jiffy...

But Aden Flint heads it clear, the full-time whistle goes and Bristol City are going third in the Championship!

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Patrick Bamford is over it. We're into time added on of time added on...

YELLOW CARD

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

But now it's Bristol City who've shown a wee bit of indiscipline, as Korey Smith fouls Adama Traore 30 yards or so away from goal, right in the centre.

One last chance for the visitors.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Josh Brownhill very nearly works himself a shooting opportunity 18 yards out, but a Middlesbrough defender gets to him to clear.

But, again, as Boro try to come forward Bristol City pinch the ball back and win a free-kick.

YELLOW CARD

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Niclas Eliasson is brought down on the Bristol City left by Cyrus Christie, who is booked for the challenge.

The clock is ticking.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

We'll have four minutes of time added on.

Can Boro complete their comeback?

SUBSTITUTION

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Bobby Reid, who's been really impressive tonight, makes way for West Brom loanee Jonathan Leko as Robins boss Lee Johnson makes his final City change.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

But Marvin Johnson's cross is a poor one and is only guided wide of the target by Patrick Bamford.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Adama Traore is fouled by Hordur Magnusson the right-hand side and Boro have a chance to throw the ball into the penalty area.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

The Robins, looking to put the game to bed, work Josh Brownhill into space on the edge of the area but his half-volley is well saved at the near post.

Soon enough, Boro are back on the attack...

QPR to appeal Mackie red card

FT: Preston 1-0 QPR

Jamie Mackie is sent off for QPR at Preston

Ian Holloway remained in referee Jeremy Simpson's office for almost an hour after his side's 1-0 defeat at Preston. Jamie Mackie was sent off in the 22nd minute for a challenge on Tom Clarke, before Alex Baptiste was shown red after full-time for dissent.

“We’ll be appealing it [Mackie’s sending off], that’s all I can say about it," Holloway told BBC Radio London.

"I will look at Alex because he should not have said anything, even to his mate, because he might be suspended.

"I don’t think that gave me any credence to go into the referee and talk about it because now I’ve got two sendings off in a game where I didn’t see any bad foul."

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

The home side are dropping deeper and deeper now, just hoping to protect their now slender one-goal advantage.

I think they can expect a Boro barrage in the closing stages.

SUBSTITUTION

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Swedish winger Niclas Eliasson comes on for Jamie Paterson as Bristol City make their second switch.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

If Adama Traore's end product was as dangerous as his pace he'd be some player!

He drives Middlesbrough forward and wins them a corner, but goalkeeper Frank Fielding claims the second ball to relieve some pressure.

SUBSTITUTION

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Striker Patrick Bamford is on for defender Fabio Da Silva as Middlesbrough go for the jugular.

How's your nerves, Bristol City fans?

GOAL: Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Hordur Magnusson OG

Out of nothing, it's game on at Ashton Gate!

Bristol City centre-half Hordur Magnusson gets himself into a right old pickle trying to clear a cross to the far post, instead diverting a header past his own goalkeeper and handing Boro a lifeline.

SUBSTITUTION

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Joe Bryan's race is run - the opening goalscorer is withdrawn for big Bosnian forward Milan Djuric.

That'll likely mean Jamie Paterson will move to the left, and Bobby Reid will play off Djuric.

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Hordur Magnusson hurls another throw into the Middlesbrough box but, on the second phase, Joe Bryan's unable to direct his effort either side of Darren Randolph.

Boro then win a corner, but Rudy Gestede can't get anything meaningful onto the near-post delivery and it drifts behind.

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Bobby Reid has been a real live-wire for Bristol City, finding a pocket of space in the right channel and teeing up Joe Bryan, whose side-footed effort drifts wide of the far post.

Waghorn 'better than I thought he was'

FT: Ipswich 4-2 Nottingham Forest

Martyn Waghorn scores for Ipswich against Nottingham Forest
Rex Features

Martyn Waghorn scored one goal and set up another to help Ipswich beat Nottingham Forest 4-2, a result which took the Tractor Boys up to seventh in the table.

"There's no such thing as a bad win but that was particularly pleasing, especially scoring four goals," manager Mick McCarthy said.

"Martyn epitomised the performance really. He was a real thorn in their side, he was fabulous.

"If I thought he was not a good player I would not have signed him. His pass to Santi Celina for the fourth goal was terrific.

"He did not lash at it, he has put it right on a plate. He is better than I thought he was."

SUBSTITUTION

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough make their second change, with former England winger Stewart Downing withdrawn for ex-Oxford attacker Marvin Johnson.

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough just need a spell of possession here, because it's Bristol City doing all the attacking.

Again, a sloppy pass from Adam Forshaw almost invites Jamie Paterson to set up a two-on-two chance but the Boro man gets away with it.

This is a completely different match to the first half.

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough full-back Fabio looks like he's picked up a knock and, subsequently, a forthcoming substitution by the visitors is put on hold.

YELLOW CARD

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

It's all Bristol City now, again working through the phases and nearly teasing a pass through for Bobby Reid, but it's hacked away.

As Middlesbrough try to come clear soon after, Joe Bryan fouls Stewart Downing and the City goalscorer is booked.

SUBSTITUTION

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

The visitors are in danger of losing their heads here.

In attempt to make sure that doesn't happen, Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk brings Rudy Gestede on for Martin Braithwaite.

YELLOW CARD

Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

This game has burst into life!

The Robins are immediately on the offensive once more, only to be stopped illegally in their tracks by Boro skipper Ben Gibson, who picks up a yellow card.

Hordur Magnusson's free-kick from 25 yards is straight into the wall.

GOAL: Bristol City 2-0 Middlesbrough

Jamie Paterson

Jamie Paterson
Rex Features

Oh my word, in a flash Bristol City score again!

Straight from kick-off Middlesbrough win a free-kick, which the home side defend easily and use as a springboard to launch an attack.

Centre-half Aden Flint is at the heart of it, playing a one-two and then crossing brilliantly for Jamie Paterson to score from close range.

Two goals in three minutes, both from crosses from central defenders!

GOAL: Bristol City 1-0 Middlesbrough

Joe Bryan

Joe Bryan
Rex Features

It's the goal the game needed - and the one Bristol City so desperately wanted!

It's superbly worked, too, as Bailey Wright gets down the right-hand side on the overlap and delivers a perfect cross to the far post for Joe Bryan to head home.

Bristol City 0-0 Middlesbrough

Oh Bobby!

Bristol City work the ball really nicely down the right-hand side, leading to a pull-back for Bobby Reid around 14 yards out, but he slams the ball high and wide.

That's more like it, though.

Bristol City 0-0 Middlesbrough

It's all very tentative again at the start of this second period, with both teams sharing possession but neither in any hurry to grab us an opener.

Who would a draw suit better? Neither, probably.
