  1. Goodbye, but we're back tomorrow...

    Wolves celebrate

Wolves ended 2017 in dramatic fashion - a stoppage-time header from Ryan Bennett secured a 2-1 win at Bristol City on Saturday, which put them 10 points clear at the top of the Championship.

That gap has been cut to nine points by Derby today, but Wolves have the opportunity to extend their advantage again on Tuesday when they host Brentford.

That's one of three Championship games tomorrow - you'll be able to follow live text coverage on the BBC Sport website and app from 19:15 GMT.

In the meantime, thanks for your company today and we hope you enjoy the rest of your New Year's Day.

  2. Post update

FT: Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

After that big win for Aston Villa, we're almost out of time here, as our New Year's Day coverage comes towards a conclusion. Let's just have a look at what's coming up tomorrow.

  3. Warnock fuming at Hoilett disallowed goal

    Reaction: QPR 2-1 Cardiff City

    Warnock

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock meanwhile took out his frustrations at the defeat at Loftus Road on the officials.

Warnock was left questioning why a Junior Hoilett second-half goal at 2-1 was ruled out for offside when the last touch on the through ball appeared to come off a QPR player.

Hoilett's effort was only disallowed after a lengthy discussion between referee Tim Robinson and his assistant.

"The referee is in a good position... he thinks the ball was deflected and clearly it's [QPR midfielder Josh] Scowen who has played the ball - so he [Hoilett] can't be offside," Warnock told BBC Radio Wales.

"It's hard enough for us to score goals without having officials chalk them off wrongly, it's very deflating and I thought he missed a penalty in the first 14 minutes.

"It's scandalous at the moment, I've never known it as poor, the officials, at the moment."

  4. Post update

FT: Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

    Richard Hoskin

BBC Radio Bristol commentator at Villa Park

This was a game too far for Bristol City tonight, after a lot of football lately. Perhaps the turning point was the miss from Aden Flint at 2-0.

  5. Post update

FT: Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

    Garry Thompson

Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC WM 95.6

Villa were very, very good - bordering on superb. Everything's gone right for Steve Bruce tonight.

Two games ago, people were saying he had to win these two games. He's answered the critics - let's move on and win some more games.

    Steve Bruce
  6. FULL-TIME

    Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

Two wins in a row for Villa, as they start 2018 on a high, but from a morale-boosting point of view, this is their best home victory for quite some time.

Their biggest since April 2013, in fact.

  7. Post update

    Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

Aston Villa will be five points below the automatic promotion places tonight, and back in the play-off spots, up to fifth.

  8. Owls players 'playing for their futures'

    Reaction: Sheffield Wednesday 0-3 Burton

More from Sheffield Wednesday's caretaker boss Lee Bullen:

"The players have let themselves so far down this season and I am absolutely gutted to be sitting here and speaking this way about these players.

"I'm not going to sugarcoat it, we have to be positive but performances like this put you in a position where you could get dragged into a relegation battle. People are playing for their futures and what is the new man going to think when he sees performances like that?

"The sooner a new man comes in hopefully we can start pushing in the right direction."

  9. Post update

    Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

From the corner, Robert Snodgrass blazes over. It was a clear chance but he was slightly off-balance.

  12. Post update

    Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

    Richard Hoskin

BBC Radio Bristol commentator at Villa Park

It was 'Ole' football from Aston Villa.

It will go down as a bad night in an otherwise very good season for Bristol City.

  13. GOAL: Aston Villa 5-0 Bristol City

    Conor Hourihane

A big deflection takes the ball past Luke Steele, but it's Conor Hourihane's goal!

But it comes after a lovely team move from Villa. Training ground stuff. They're knocking it around with real confidence now.

  14. Parkinson hails "colossal" Bolton performance

    Reaction: Bolton 1-0 Hull City

Gary Madine goal for Bolton against Hull

Bolton Wanderers manager Phil Parkinson wasn't short of praise for his side as they lifted themselves out of the Championship relegation zone with a 1-0 win against Hull City.

Gary Madine's impressive first-half free-kick was enough to claim the three points for the Trotters.

"I thought it was a colossus of a performance," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"To achieve back-to-back wins, the first away from home at Sheffield United on Saturday and then this one, is really important.

"With what was thrown at us today, I thought the lads were immense today. It's a really important victory.

"I always talk about the spirit, but I think everyone could see that today the way the lads fought for each other on the pitch."

  20. Holloway relieved to see selection "risk" pay off

    Reaction: QPR 2-1 Cardiff City

    Paul Smyth

QPR manager Ian Holloway admitted he took a bit of a punt selecting 20-year-old striker Paul Smyth against promotion hopefuls Cardiff City.

But, it paid off for Holloway and Rangers as the Northern Irish striker netted the winner and celebrated in acrobatic style as Rangers came from behind to send Cardiff to a fourth defeat in a row.

"It was probably one of the biggest risks I've ever taken," Holloway said.

"But if you keep doing what you're doing and people are missing (chances) then someone else deserves a chance to have a go.

"It could have gone horribly wrong, but it didn't. He was a breath of fresh air."
