Celtic have 'long way to go' - Rodgers

FT: Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

"Some of these players have a long way to go to call themselves players at this level."

Strong words from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers to conclude his post-match media conference.

He praised them for their character in preventing Anderlecht, who he admitted were the better team on the night, winning by the three goals they needed to deny Celtic a place in Monday's Europe League draw.

But he admitted that Celtic remain a long way short of the quality needed to compete at Champions League level - and that finances mean it will become even more difficult.

That said, he expressed his delight at having European football to look forward to in the new year.

Dons reject approach for McInnes

The other big headline of the night was Aberdeen announcing that they have rejected their Premiership rivals' approach to speak to manager Derek McInnes.

This story is poised to run for at least a few days yet, with Rangers thought determined to get their man ahead of the weekend meeting with Ross County.

David-Webb: Take 3rd in that group all day long.

Kenny O'Hara: Lack of finance is why Celtic will struggle to get into the Champions League last 16. Lack of quality is why Celtic will struggle to get into the Europa League last 16.

Ian Hendry: My goodness Celtic were so poor, never seen a team give a ball away so many times in one game at this level.... they are so lucky to be in the Europa league, Anderlecht will be disappointed to go out.

Immense pride to qualify - Rodgers

FT: Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers gave a frank account of the performance.

"I think the context of the game affected our performance," he said.

"Anderlecht having to chase the game, they were were far brighter.

"Midway through the first half, we had to change it tactically to stem the flow of the game, I was thankful to get in at 0-0 and we were far better in the second half.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, Craig Gordon and Scott Brown

"Overall, the best team won, but the bigger picture was to get through to the Europa League by finishing third and that would be a massive achievement.

"We were the fourth seeds coming into this and there is immense pride that we got the job done.

"But we have a lot of work to do at this level, but we can look forward to the Europa League in February."

The Europa League beckons, but it hardly seems like a night of celebration for Celtic.

Colm Kilbane: Job done.

Dorian L'Grass: Poor... but who gives a .... European football after Christmas, Bhoys. Hail, Hail.

Graham McLennan: Celtic have a serious confidence problem. Rodgers turned Ronnie Deila’s team into domestic winners, but basically, deep down, most of the players know they’re out of their depth.

Mick Dee: That was a terrible performance. Still no home win. You know its a poor performance when your goalie and a second-half sub are the best men in your for Stuart Armstrong in Europe..shocking.

PSG edge Bayern at top

FT: Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

PSG top the group despite being beaten 3-1 in Germany by Bayern Munich.

And Celtic progress to the Europa League round of 32 after tonight's defeat at home to Anderlecht.

Celtic will find out their next European opponents in Monday's Europa League draw.

Group B

Home record a problem in Europe?

FT: Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Tom English

Chief sports writer, BBC Scotland

The big picture - they've done what they needed to do. They did it in Brussels and they did it well with a 3-0 win. If we were to say that Celtic are learning, they're growing up, then they needed to win this match. They needed to put Anderlecht away and they haven't. That's now 11 home matches in Champions League and Europa League without a win. That's extraordinary

Celtic need more quality

FT: Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Scott McDonald

Former Celtic striker on BBC Sportsound

Celtic at the moment have a very young squad who lack experience at this level. Brendan Rodgers needs to add a bit more quality and I don't think he did that in the summer

FULL-TIME Stirling Albion 0-1 Peterhead

It's all finished at Forthbank. Rory McAllister's first-half goal - his 21st of the season - is enough to secure the three points for Peterhead.

The Blue Toon overtake their hosts to go top of Scottish League Two on goal difference ahead of Montrose.

Bittersweet night for Celtic

FT: Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

So it is Celtic who go into Monday's Europa League draw.

But they will go into that among the unseeded teams after only collecting three points during this Champions League campaign.

In the end, it was that 3-0 win in Brussels in September that was the crucial result.

After a lacklustre reverse display, Celtic are left with a record of two victories in their last three Champions League campaigns.

They have only won one in 12 under Brendan Rodgers.

Much work has to be done to not only make Celtic a force at this level but, more immediately, in the Europa League knock-out stages.

FULL-TIME Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Chris McLaughlin

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

A less than convincing European display from Celtic, but its job done. Brendan Rodgers knows his side can’t expect a run in the Europa league playing like this, but it’s progress he wanted and it’s progress he’s got. European football post-Christmas awaits

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham goes into the book for an elbow in the face of an opponent.

Bruno on for Appiah

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Massimo Bruno, who is on loan from Leipzig, replaces Dennis Appiah in Anderlecht's midfield.

Last roll of the dice by the Belgian coach, but it looks like being too late.

The clock is ticking and Celtic are trailing...

Joshua Chisholm: you all realise Celtic need to be beaten 3-0 for the defeat to mean anything right? Being beaten 1-0 still gives Celtic Europa after the head to head aggregate.

Proinseas Flannigain: Still doing enough to have European football after Christmas, c'mon Celtic.

Clark Brechin: 0-3 in Brussels flattered Celtic, there's really not much between the sides so am not surprised by this in the slightest.

Gordon Christie: Gotta not lose another two

Anderlecht lack urgency

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Scott McDonald

Former Celtic striker on BBC Sportsound

I'm a bit surprised at Anderlecht, considering they need more goals, that they have not been a bit more quick and direct

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Olivier Ntcham continues to look lively after coming on for Celtic and the Frenchman's low drive from 22 yards is held superbly by Franck Boeckx as the goalkeeper gets down at full stretch at his near post.

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Anderlecht are deservedly ahead, but it looks like time is running out on their hopes of securing the three-goal win they need to deny Celtic a place in the Europa League.

Celtic containing Anderlecht

All about game management for Celtic now. They are containing the visitors well, but if they score one more, hearts will be firmly in mouths

Sofiane Hanni stings Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon's fingers with a drive from 20 yards, but the Scotland man does enough to push it clear.

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

An effort on target at last from Celtic, but Mikael Lustig's header is straight at the goalkeeper.

GOAL Bayern Munich 3-1 Paris St-Germain

Corentin Tolisso

Corentin Tolisso scores his second of the night and the Frenchman's goal gives Bayern renewed hope of overtaking his compatriots at the top of Group B.

Mbodji replaced with Sa

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Anderlecht also make a change and it is in defence, with Josue Sa replacing Kara Mbodji.

Edouard for Dembele

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Moussa Dembele is just back from injury and he hobbles off to be replaced with Odsonne Edouard, the 19-year-old fresh from that hat-trick against Motherwell.

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Kieran Tierney cuts the ball back into the path of Moussa Dembele, but the French striker slips as he is challenged eight yards out and the striker's effort is well wide.

Dembele is left not only disappointed but grimacing in pain.

Next five minutes 'very important'

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Pat Bonner

Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Radio Scotland

We did say that the first goal would be vital. You hope that there's not enough time here for Anderlecht to get a second. Certainly the next five minutes are going to be very important

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Jozo Simunovic is so close to making up immediately for that own goal.

Central defensive partner Dedryck Boyata flicks on and the Croatia-born 23-year-old shows the instincts of a striker as he controls with one foot then swings with the other, only for his 15-yard volley to clear the crossbar.

Nervy finish

Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Chris McLaughlin

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

And now it’s the visiting fans in full voice. Celtic sliced wide open for the goal. A nervy half hour in Glasgow’s east end awaits

GOAL Celtic 0-1 Anderlecht

Jozo Simunovic, own goal

Just when the game seemed to be petering out, Anderlecht get one of the three goals they need to overtake Celtic.

Dennis Appiah's curling cross brushes the top of team-mate Pieter Gerkens' head and deflects off the shoulder of Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic and in off the far post.

That came during a spell of Anderlecht domination of possession.

Crowd coming to life

Celtic 0-0 Anderlecht

Chris McLaughlin

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

A capacity crowd that was quiet in the first half has now come to life. They sense a change in the dynamic of this match. Celtic certainly more positive on the ball

Celtic improve in midfield

Celtic 0-0 Anderlecht

Pat Bonner

Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Radio Scotland

I think Celtic are winning the ball in the middle of the pitch now - that's the difference. They've got that extra body in the middle of the pitch and they're able to get on the ball

GOAL Bayern Munich 2-1 Paris St-Germain

Kylian Mbappe-Lottin

Kylian Mbappe-Lottin looks to have ended Bayern's hopes of winning Group B as he pulls a goal back for PSG just when the Germans were threatening to overcome that goals advantage.

James Forrest seems to have shaken off that first-half knock and the winger collects the ball 18 yards from goal and his attempted curler to the back post has Frank Boeckx at full stretch and the goalkeeper tips it wide for a corner.

'More belief and drive'

Celtic 0-0 Anderlecht

Chris McLaughlin

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Bringing on Rogic and Ntcham at the break has given the home side some fresh belief and drive. They’re finally cutting Anderlecht open, but still no clear cut chances

Celtic 0-0 Anderlecht

Moussa Dembele was anonymous in the first half, but the French striker bursts into life.

First with a cross that is deflected into the arms of goalkeeper Frank Boeckx then jinking into the penalty box before slipping just as he is about to pull the trigger.

More positive though from Celtic.
