'They looked like they wanted it more'

I think you have to give credit to Bolton, they defended really well and looked like they wanted it more than us - that's what was really disappointing for me. It's an opportunity lost, but they deserved the win. The run of results isn't a concern, but the performance is.

Lee JohnsonBristol City head coach on Sky Sports

'We deserved the three points'

FT: Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

I'm very pleased. Sammy Ameobi is a very talented player, he's played in the Premier League and he looked very dangerous tonight. He was very unlucky not to get another one. There was great resilience in our defending and we deserved the three points.

Phil ParkinsonBolton Wanderers manager on Sky Sports

FT: Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Right, let's get some reaction from the two managers...

How it stands at the top...

FT: Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Top six
.

Bristol City, meanwhile, remain in fifth place. But surely they'll consider this one a huge missed opportunity, with three points enough to have sent them level with second-placed Derby County.

How it stands at the bottom...

FT: Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Bottom six
.

As you can see, that result not only lifts Bolton Wanderers out of the bottom three but all the way up to 19th.

Two of the sides to come down from the Premier League last season, Sunderland and Hull City, are in the relegation zone.

'I enjoyed it up there today'

Gary Madine's a top-quality player, he deserves his move, but you've just got to get on with it. I enjoyed it up there today. Who knows what the future holds, I'm just going to take it each game as it comes.

Sammy AmeobiBolton goalscorer on Sky Sports

FT: Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

And guess what? We're going to hear from the big Bolton front man next...

FULL-TIME

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Bolton Wanderers have done it! Sammy Ameobi's fantastic solo goal wins it.

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Bolton get it clear, Bristol City concede a free-kick and that is surely that!

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

It's all on this. Everyone forward, everyone back. Josh Brownhill stands over it...

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Just as Aden Flint does trundle forward, Joe Bryan delivers a horrible looping cross straight down the throat of Ben Alnwick.

But they have a free-kick right on the edge of the box in a crossing position here...

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Still City press without success. I wonder if Lee Johnson will send big Aden Flint up top for the last couple of minutes?

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Four minutes to be added on. Four minutes for Bolton to hold on. Four minutes for Bristol City to find a goal.

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

We're marching towards full-time and still Bolton resist. Gustav Engvall concedes a free-kick in frustration, allowing the hosts to wind the clock down a wee bit further.

SUBSTITUTION

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Up the other end, Famara Diedhiou gets a shot in towards goal but can't keep it down.

That's his last action, too, as Gustav Engvall comes on in his place. The last throw of the dice.

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Bristol City have scored 13 times in the last 15 minutes of games this season - only Fulham and Brentford in the second tier have more - and how dearly they'd love another one of those tonight.

But my word, it's Bolton who have the big chance to score the second goal of the game!

Zach Clough has it, centre of goal and in a whole heap of space, but he curls it over.

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

This is proper last-ditch stuff from Bolton, as the Robins pile forward in search of an equaliser.

But after getting the ball clear Bailey Wright brings down Josh Vela and there's some respite for the home team.

SUBSTITUTION

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

A second Bolton change, as Filipe Morais replaces former Bristol City right-back Mark Little.

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

It's also Bristol City's cue to go more direct, with Aden Flint's knock-down teeing up Josh Brownhill, whose shot is turned behind by Ben Alnwick.

Now Bolton have something to hold onto, this could be very trick for Bristol City. Already Wanderers have retreated into their own half, allowing the visitors to play 10 yards further up the field.

All that said, 14 minutes is a long time to hold on...

Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Straight from the restart, the Robins win a corner, but Aden Flint's header is easily saved by Ben Alnwick.

What can the Robins muster from here?

GOAL: Bolton 1-0 Bristol City

Sammy Ameobi

Sammy Ameobi

The sucker punch!

From Bristol City's corner, Bolton break quickly through Sammy Ameobi, who shrugs off Joe Bryan, strides forward and directs a brilliant shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

It's against the run of play but it's a super opening goal.

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

This second half continues to follow a familiar pattern, with Bristol City dominating possession but struggling to carve out an absolute golden chance to score.

SUBSTITUTION

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

A double change for Bristol City, with Hordur Magnusson and Lois Diony coming on for Jamie Paterson and Marlon Pack.

Magnusson comes on with a note for Korey Smith, presumably with some top-secret tactics. Or maybe it just says "score a goal", which would be pretty good advice too.

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Zach Clough has a pop at goal but it's an easy save for Luke Steele.

YELLOW CARD (Josh Brownhill)

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Ameobi
Rex Features

That's ugly from Josh Brownhill, who's late to a challenge and gets a yellow card for his troubles.

Can Bolton create something from this set-piece, about 35 yards from goal?

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

... But Joe Bryan's eventual half-volley goes miles wide.

SUBSTITUTION

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Walker off, Clough on
Rex Features

Phil Parkinson is the first manager to make a move, bringing Zach Clough on for his second debut in place of fellow Nottingham Forest loanee Tyler Walker.

It does little to disrupt City's rhythm, however, as they win another free-kick deep in enemy territory...

Penalty or no penalty?

Get involved via #bbcefl

Andrew Simpson-Lynas: definitely a penalty. I hope someone had a word with the ref at 1/2 time.

Russell Payne: Stone wall penalty.

Goon: That was an absolutely blatant penalty. Shocking decision. Goalkeepers get far too much protection nowadays. Get away with anything. Fairly sure they wouldn't get punished for punching someone in the box these days.

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Famara Diedhiou
Rex Features

That's by far and away Bristol City's best chance of the match.

Korey Smith strides forward and delivers a perfect cross for Famara Diedhiou, but Ben Alnwick parries his cross away and David Wheater does brilliantly to get to the rebound before Bobby Reid.

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Bristol City are bossing the ball, as they did in the first half, but there's just no real tempo to the match.

Bolton midfielder Karl Henry does his best to spice things up a bit by playing a dodgy backpass to Ben Alnwick, who has to scamper off his line to hack clear.

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Jamie Paterson wriggles his way through down the right and wins a corner for the away side.

Joe Bryan's delivery to the far post picks out towering centre-half Aden Flint, but he can only direct his header off target when he perhaps should have gone back across goal.

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

And the hosts win an early corner. Earlier in the move that led up to it, Aden Flint's a bit lucky not to concede a free-kick for a late arial challenge on Sammy Ameobi.

City get the set-piece clear.

KICK-OFF

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

It's as you were from the first half and the players are back out on the pitch, so let's get under way again.

HT: Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Bristol City have had 63% possession but no shots on target. Bolton have had eight shots, yet only two on target.

Any changes at the break? I've got my eyes peeled...

HALF-TIME

Bolton 0-0 Bristol City

Wright and Walker
Getty Images

That's us for the first half.

There's not been a huge amount to write home about in the way of chances, so the main half-time talking point will probably be the early challenge by Ben Alnwick and Bristol City's Bobby Reid.

Penalty or no penalty? Well, it certainly looked a great deal more like a spot kick than the free-kick against Reid that the referee actually gave.
