He added: "The winners were Barcelona, the losers were Liverpool – other than their bank balance. Fans don't care about bank balances, they care about winning."

Middlesbrough are in talks with Everton over a potential loan move for Bosnian international midfield man Mo Besic before Wednesday's transfer deadline.

Dialogue is continuing between the clubs and Boro boss Tony Pulis is keen to add the 25-year-old to his squad.

Besic, whose Everton career has been troubled by injury since he was signed by then manager Roberto Martinez in a £4m deal from Hungarian side Ferencvaros in July 2014, has figured in only nine games this season and has not played since the turn of the year.

The forward, who is on loan from Paris St-Germain, has not played since November after being allowed to return to Spain for personal reasons.

He's now back training with the club and Lambert said: "Going forward, he looks impressive but that has never been in question because we know the type of player he is.

"He obviously started the season very brightly.

"It's been a difficult period for him personally, as a club we will continue to support him with that, but hopefully now he can also go on to play a big part for us until the end of the season."

Not CNN T-101: (re 16:06) Mahrez would be mad to sign for Man City. City don't need him. But, assuming Mahrez left, I would have loved to see Delofeu replace him - unfortunately that's now too late.

  15. Chelsea cause Aubameyang complications

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only)

    David Ornstein

    BBC Sport

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is pencilled in for a medical in London on Wednesday morning.

As we know, the deal can only happen if Borussia Dortmund secure a replacement.

Earlier today, everything was set for Batshuayi to join Dortmund on loan with Giroud moving to Chelsea for £20m.

However Chelsea – through their transfer negotiator Marina Granovskaia – are now said to be trying to drive the Giroud price down at the last minute.

Arsenal have not taken well to that and are threatening to end negotiations with Chelsea and send Giroud on loan to Dortmund, in order to complete the Aubameyang signing.

The problem with that, of course, is whether Giroud will agree to join Dortmund (which was the original plan before Chelsea entered the fray).

If not and Giroud stays at Arsenal, Dortmund would have to source an alternative replacement if the Aubameyang transfer is to proceed.

  16. Mahrez to Man City??

    Manchester City

    Riyad Mahrez

    Now this would be something...

Manchester City are to make a shock - and extremely late - £50m move for Leicester forward Riyad Mahrez, report the Daily Mail.

Pep Guardiola wants to add the 26-year-old Algerian to his side after missing out on Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United and Leroy Sane to injury.

Mahrez handed in a transfer request at King Power Stadium in the summer.

    Thoughts Leicester fans?
