'Ed Woodward text me to say we will win'

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Manchester United

More from Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC Sport: "The players were all very good and when they are all good the team is solid and we can play against any team including Spurs, who are one of the top teams in Europe.

"It was a great achievement to beat them in their stadium.

"I had this morning one simple SMS (text message) from one of my bosses Ed Woodward - he was saying that 'I believe we are going to win but if we don't the season is a good season, a season where everyone is professional and everyone is bringing the club in the right direction'. That's my feeling too.

"We can close the season in a final and that's a good achievement. But we need to focus on our six points and we deserve to finish second and to do that behind a fantastic team is a good achievement."

RSS: Wouldn't call it a 'good' season, for a team with the history of Man Utd. It's progression at the most, until we win the league then it can never be a good season.

Ian Marks: Spurs fans have no right to be happy. Dele is right, they have to do better, the big players: Kane, Dele, Eriksen were all anonymous in the second half. Poch picks a 2nd choice keeper for a semi-final and waits to sub off an AWOL Son

'So close yet so far'

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think every defeat is bad. It's difficult to accept but of course we are disappointed we are out and cannot achieve the final.

"We competed but not enough to win. We dominated the first half and were much better than Manchester United.

"United defended very well and so deep. We are disappointed because we are so close. We need to think, move on, finish the season and try to finish in the top four.

"I think we need to understand where we have come from. It's easy to talk about winning trophies.

"To win a trophy when you face a side like Manchester United, Chelsea or Manchester City is not easy. But the most important thing is we are able to compete."

Mark: In a few years I hope this will be seen as a blip, a stepping stone on the path to greater things. I said that last year and our Champions League run was so much better, there is progress. Still gutted, still want a trophy.

'Too much criticism'

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC Sport: "We deserve it. If we split the match into periods we were the best team for many of these periods. Even when they had the ball when we were winning we were totally in control.

"We lost control after the 1-0. At half-time we spoke - we came back late for the second half because we spoke a lot - and organised ourselves. When you play away from home the supporters were phenomenal.

"We should ask ourselves why there is too many critics on all of us? We can finish second with six more points. To do that with all the fantastic teams we play against will be an achievement for a club that couldn't do it for a few years now.

"And it will be a fourth final in three years. So, maybe too much criticism."

Spurs fans, no trophy again but are you happy with how the team has progressed?

United fans, second place and an FA Cup final, is that a good season?

'We let ourselves down'

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, speaking to BBC Sport: "We let ourselves down, it's very disappointing. We have to try and pick ourselves up and finish the season strongly.

"You can't go 1-0 up and then 2-1 down against a team like Manchester United. We can't put ourselves in that situation.

"We were dominant from the first minute and it only looked to be going one way.

"Everyone talks. We want to win trophies, we have the staff that want to win. We can't keep doing this. We can't throw it away. We have got to improve."

So after all that who was your man of the match?

You can rate all the players here.

'United managed that half brilliantly'

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Alan Shearer

Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

I think United deserved it. I thought they managed that second-half brilliantly. When you look at the touchline, they have got a serial winner in Jose Mourinho and they used all of that experience and guidance. From a Tottenham point of view, when you look to their touchline and their big players to give the side a lift, they were lacking.

Mourinho on track for another record

Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Mourinho could become the third manager to win the FA Cup with two different clubs, after Herbert Chapman with Huddersfield Town in 1922 and Arsenal in 1930, and Billy Walker with Sheffield Wednesday in 1935 and Nottingham Forest in 1959.

He’s won the FA Cup just once, with Chelsea in 2007, beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United 1-0 in extra-time at Wembley – the first final to be played at the rebuilt stadium.

For Man United, they are looking to win Premier League titles and Champions League trophies to justify the money they've spent and the enormity of the club.

United are in control now. As you approach the end of the game it's nice to know that you can just keep the ball without having to score. You just work the opposition and make them chase possession.
