We could go on about VAR all night, I am sure we have all got better things to do.

Amosgyan: After watching the Portugal v Iran game, if VAR is the future of football then I give up. It is no more the game I love. Not exciting to watch. Boring. It's a disaster. Football at its worst stage.

Ben: VAR, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

Jack Allan: The ref had no control of the game at all. All uses of VAR were incorrect.

Hadi Rezaei: Our whole country is in tears as Iran loses the opportunity to go to the knockout stage, but in their hearts everyone is praising our young players who never played on such a big stage in such a tense situation against European champions Portugal.

  4. 'VAR did its job'

    Iran 1-1 Portugal

Portugal coach Fernando Santos on VAR: "No I wasn’t concerned (about Ronaldo) it seemed like a normal thing in the match and the referee did what he had to do. He went to the VAR three times and considered two penalties and one yellow card.

"I think the VAR did its job and that’s what we have to accept."

  5. 'It got weird'

    Iran 1-1 Portugal

More from Portugal coach Fernando Santos: "We started very well and then Carlos (Quieroz) changed it and went to man-marking with the Iran team occupying William’s space, and they did it very well.

"When we lost ball possession Iran had an advantage. It was an excellent goal by Quaresma and we were on top of the game until the penalty. We didn’t score but that’s part of football, not everything is perfect.

"At 1-0 it made Iran believe and the game got a little weird. We lost control a bit and then they scored a goal."

  6. 'Congratulations to Carlos'

    Iran 1-1 Portugal

Portugal coach Fernando Santos: "The conclusion and most important thing is that we are going to continue playing.

"I would like to give congratulations to Carlos Queiroz on the beautiful work he is doing as the head of the Iranian national team team and they have proven themselves again through these matches that they are very well organised, they work well, work intensely and believe it’s possible."

SMS Message: To everyone saying 'VAR is a failure' - VAR is a success because it allows referees to see what has happened up close. The problems stem from the referees themselves, who interpret what VAR presents them inconsistently/inaccurately. I think it's fair to say that everything takes time to perfect, so stop expecting referees' use of VAR to give perfect outcomes every time. from Alex

SMS Message: VAR needs the decision made by another official not on the pitch. Saying that VAR has made a not great 1-1 draw into a very entertaining game filled with everything and almost helped Iran!!! Through to the knockout stage. from Michael Gregson

  8. 'We have obtained our goal'

    Iran 1-1 Portugal

Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma: “We did very well and have obtained our goal and now we have to recover and think about the next match.

“We have to continue with this mind-set of winning and then wait for the next match.

“We know the difficulties we’re going to have it’s a big team with very good players and the most important thing now is for us to recover and get ready for Uruguay."

Rhys: Personally I’d give the captain three VAR requests per game each. If they waste them, tough luck... the “clear and obvious” error rule doesn’t work cause you have to check so many to see if it is clear and that’s questionable so 50/50s get over turned. Cap it I say.

Alex Haworth: I still love VAR and think the pros of it far outweigh the cons.

Matthew Harris: One bad referee and suddenly all is lost? Like a bad referee has never happened before? Grow up.

Colin Macdougall: I think VAR was brought in too soon at this tournament. Should have been left till 2022. See if it's a success by then.

Neil Holloway: VAR is bad, the way it's used at the minute, but the most pathetic thing at this World Cup is the players falling down holding their faces and just about every other part of their body playacting. Do they not understand how pathetic they look. Ruining football.

  12. Here a VAR poem for you...

Tom Arron has taken his time to pen this for us:

    Oh you silly VAR.

    You truly are bizarre.

    You bewilder and confuse.

    Bamboozle and bemuse.

    Get it sorted for Qatar.

  13. Watch: Quaresma gives Portugal lead

A reminder of the stunning opening goal...

  14. 'Such a big disappointment'

    Iran 1-1 Portugal

Iran winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh: "It's such a big disappointment for us. We created some chances but unfortunately we didn't score.

"We had a big chance at the end of the game, we could have scored and won it. As everyone has seen, we did our best to win this game but we missed some chances."

  15. Late drama

So this is how Group B ended up. With seconds left Portugal were going to finish top, with Spain second.

But goals in both games mean Spain win the group on goals scored. Had Iran scored that late chance, they would have gone through as group winners, with Portugal out.

Jeff Jones: Never a penalty, it’s not VAR that’s wrong it’s really bad refereeing, anyone can see that was never a penalty in a million years.

Dan Baker: VAR won’t work until referees are respected and allowed to get on with the job. Watch Rugby Union/League and see the difference.

Ryan Munson: Got to disagree with Alan Shearer there. The problem with that game wasn't VAR, it was the referee. VAR has actually proven to be hugely beneficial in this tournament in getting the right decisions made. Not perfect; but still a big improvement.

  18. 'It is not right'

    Iran 1-1 Portugal

    Alan Shearer

Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

You are playing in the biggest competition in the world and it seems like VAR is on trial and it is not right.

Lewis Sullivan: We used to have one or two controversial decisions in big games, now with VAR it's at least six. Either reform is needed or the experiment has failed.
